Sony Japan confirms late-July release for Android 5.1.1, details changelog

Sony Japan Android 5.1.1 Xperia_1Android 5.1.1 Lollipop was certified for the Sony Xperia Z2 and Z3 series yesterday, which most likely indicates that the firmware will start to roll in a few weeks’ time. If there was any doubt that it would arrive in July, then you will be glad to hear that Sony Japan has confirmed a late-July release is on the cards.

Japan typically sees firmware updates later than other markets globally, so it looks like Sony is trying to speed up the updates in the region. The company has also revealed an Android 4.4.4 KitKat to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop changelog. As we already have Android 5.0.2 Lollipop many of the changes detailed we have already seen.

However, what it does reveal are two changes that we reported on a while back: 1) additional options for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in the notification menu (to choose a wireless network for example) and 2) new icons being used in the settings menu. New animations are also expected. The changelog doesn’t reveal anything additional over and above what we’ve seen on Android 5.0.2, but you can check it out for yourself at the source link below.

its says that on the settings for the quick menu you will be able to switch users

What about Z4/Z3+ and Z4 Tablet and Z4v and M4 Aqua and C4?!!! What happened to them?!!

  • Wis

I’m wondering if the Z3 Dual will now support the native dual-SIM option in 5.1 instead of the Sony custom build solution…

  • GigaSPX

I hope this is worth the near year long wait since I’ve had the Z3v. If it’s coming for it that is…

  • SB13X

Is the Z3 and Z2 going to get the improved screen detection when wet like the Z3+? Same with the Camera will we be getting the software improvements that came built in the Z3+? If not it’ll be one to forget.

  • Wolf0491

if verizon still hasn’t updated to 5.0.2 hopefully they skip it and go straight to 5.1 quick for you guys…..
I’ve read verizon updates slow though

  • Wolf0491

i think the wet finger thing is hardware related

  • GigaSPX

Nope no lollipop yet. If we go straight to 5.1.1 it’d be great.

  • Eduardo Otero

Telstra from Australia was pushed to update Z3 and Z2 series to 5.0.2 to be able to get 5.1.1 and now Japan says they will jump from 4.4.4 to 5.1.1
    Fuck logic xD

  • WilliamTell13

    It definitely is hardware related.

  • WilliamTell13

Woohoo! Hopefully it comes out on the Z1s on T-Mobile within a month or so.

  • Eduardo Otero

As you can see this update will get Z3 and Z2 series after will hit Z1 series (maybe a month after) once that happened T-Mobile will take their time to release to Z1S .

Sony should *really* put more space between the buttons marked by the “1” box, they’re so cramped, especially on tablets. They just squeezed their button for customizing quick toggles in there, without re-spacing the other buttons.

mobile radio active bug… it’s hogs up the battery… hope it fixes it.

  • SM

    will t2 ultra get this?

  • jmaxim917

    Totally agree.

  • Shady

Finally someone with the same problem I tought my screen is dying lol
And feature request make increase the sound in other apps like YouTube comparing tue sound at 50% in walkman is a way higher the 50% in others

  • Clarence Alvarado

Still, no toggle for auto-brightness. WTF Sony.

  • Alex Baloch

Wait, So if I have an Xperia Z with 4.4.4 Kitkat, I will be updated directly to 5.1.1? No 5.0.2?

  • Jachym Kokesh Lukes

I don’t give a hoot about animations. How about proper Camera2 API?

  • Shakeel Mohammed

Omg I thought it was me alone

  • wared

Sony’s lollipop update is the buggest update i have ever tested,
the icons and wedgets are disappearing for a few seconds when opening any app for a long time,
    apps always get not responsible,
    battery usage is freak,
    the phone keep restarting,
connections (wifi, bluetooth) are very bad,
    and many many bugs.
I just don’t know why sony took too long to bring the lollipop update when it’s still very buggy.

  • 1998 ?????

  • Eduardo Otero

It relays on which firmware you have.
As I know only Japanese will jump from 4.4 to 5.1

  • Alex Baloch

My firmware is android 4.4.4 and it ends with. 283.

Is this the reason why I am not getting 5.0.2?

  • Eduardo Otero

Which operator? And cloud you type complete the firmware?

  • Alex Baloch

    I have the C6603 unlocked.
I’m currently on 4.4.4 with the firmware:

  • Eduardo Otero

Well for Z you might have to wait a couple months because the first to get 5.1 are Z3 and Z2 after that Z1 and after Z so I would believe you’ll get 5.0 before

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

Are you timel by any chance

  • Alvin

What kind of dumb question is that? Of course they’ll get it

  • Alvin

    Let the show began

  • xperiaDROID

So, if someone here criticizes Sony for doing something wrong, he’s Timel or a troll? No wonder Sony didn’t improve, it’s because Sony fanboys keep praising them even though they did it wrong.

Minor thing, but it would REALLY be nice to have the Lollipop screen-off animation.

I always post here as wared, I’m a Sony fan, but I always Criticize Sony because I won’t it to improve.

  • wared

    I don’t know, I never tested 4.0

Why are you people always thought that when some people criticised sony or xperia and its things for good and you respond it like that. Just take what sony have with their things so they can improve. Don’t be such a fanboy freak :)

  • Alvin

I’ve made a comment with the same damn thing as you did. They are such a fanboy ass dont they

  • Alvin

Why? Because They are too busy making z3+… Oh wait that thing is a flaw too

  • Alvin

    Yes he’s me

  • Alvin

Believe me, my old phone, xperia mini pro running with 2.3.4 is smoother than z3+ with its overheating thing

  • Alvin

That’s why I’m happy i didn’t live in us because I’m a sony fan, i don’t want to buy any phones except Sony’s, and because verizon verizon: updates sucks big time

  • Felix Lefort

Be sure it’s not only the Z2. I have the samething on the Z3. Sometimes when waking the screen the screen flashes once and gets really bright and goes back to normal after a second.

  • Raj Singh

I don’t bitch about updates but every device updated to 5.0.2 should get updated to 5.1.1.
Lollipop has way too many problems. I don’t like the lag and memory issues.

  • GigaSPX

Verizon is the only one with the best signal coverage everywhere in the US. If any of the international phones can work with the signals, I would’ve gotten them long before.

  • Khillo81

Same here on Z1. It doesn’t bother me much as it doesn’t happen that often. What really annoys me is the home screen refresh which is occurring more often. Well, I guess with every update my old phone will suffer as its hardware becomes outdated. Waiting for the next Sony flagship…

  • Antonis Kalaitzakis

you have to format factory phone after installation :P

5.02 improved battery life but ruined camera, sound loudness and overheating.

  • Shady

    Download power toggle for now

  • Eduardo Otero

    Which one ain’t getting 5.1??

  • Eduardo Otero

Actually it has to be done before installing it.

  • Alvin

I don’t understand what you said..

  • Alvin

Yeah, but are they really aucks in updates?

  • Alvin

  • Arch9

Or try flash manually with flashtool

  • jrharbort

No, it’s just the change log details the changes from 4.4.4 to 5.1.1. They’ve been on 5.0.2 like the rest of us.

  • Eduardo Otero

Actually there are no Japanese Xperias that have received Lollipop, none operator has released it yet for nor Z3, Z2 neither thieir tablets

  • Eduardo Otero

Everyone!!! Wait a minute!!!! Have you all realised this is only for tablets??

  • Eduardo Otero

I have always done that way and now Lollipop didn’t crash camera, sound, smooth or something else, just the DSEE HX that is not working, just that

Every single device on 5.0.x should be upgraded to a version that doesn’t crash apps or lag on redraw of homescreen and minor other annoyances that add up to a frustrating user experience. Why the fuck does it take so many steps to get to the screen you want? And I don’t like the extra split second it takes to transition from one screen to the next.

  • amit kumar anand

    It means z ultra; z1 series update in 5.1 on 23 – 30 august.

  • Eduardo Otero

I’m telling you you. Every Xperia that has gotten Lollipop 5.0 will get 5.1
What can delayed it is the operator. Besides my Z3 Compact does not take a second extra, actually it goes a little smoother.

  • amit kumar anand

I hope sony give bug fix update .Also fix the issue of superheating

They’d better release the lollipop firmwares for earlier devices as well, like the Z1 series.
I own a Z1 f and it is still on KitKat. I flashed the international 5.0.2 ROM but then there’s no NFC, which is a pain.

I can confirm that Z3+ is not smooth like Z3 especially when it heats. Then it lags like my Z on first Android 4.2.2. We need improvements.

  • Jean5689
  • Alvin

oh that solved my brain’s pentium processor problem…

yes it is, does the latest update really make those heat gone, i mean does the heat reduces at all?

  • DieMusik

I totally agree with you. Raw capture will improve picture quality a lot. One of the reason I bought Z2 was the camera. I would love to take full advantage of it.

I believe I had my Xperia Mini Pro, I upgraded 2.3.7 to 4.1.2 (official)
I didn’t to do upgrade 4.0, my sister Xhas Xperia Tipo, ICS became much worse lagging background, Looks outdatd desgin as well.
I believe 4.1.2 is best for Xperia Mini Pro (improved performance benchmark, improved camera but much better than Xperia SP Camera’s.) But i sold Xperia Mini Pro, I owned Xperia SP. (In future my whitelist: Atleast Snapdragon 605, Atleast better Camera API but I only 8 or 13MP, Atleast better peformance OS)

are u for real or fake? just wonder , sony has the fewest bugs in their software , and none of the manufacurer gonna rolled out 5.1.1 to 24 units :) samsung has the worst lollipop software it took 5 updates to fix the bug from the first in the december now its july, sony releases late but the continual device updates very good, i have ultra none bugs only battery drain , all phones gonna get lollipop before middle of sep , thats great :L) so please go to bed u man must get som sleep :)

  • nick sweden

sony should completely change the worst qs after google , the kitkat qs is so freaking good much space to recieve notifications ,now its little to much , or have 4 row buttons , i hope they change , cause many 1000 of sony users has complain so we will see if they change in sony sweden says :) hope so:)

  • nick sweden

thats not sonys fault that is ur carrier who is late :/

    Official 4.1.2? I thought even xperia arc s didn’t get 4.1.2

    Did you mean 4.0.4?

  • Alvin

Yeah, i always have the same thought. My xperia mini pro’s camera is way better than my xperia L

  • Omar

It is the carrier. I actually thought it was quite surprising that my phone got updates from docomo from 4.2-4.4. Typically they will keep your device on one or two Android versions which sucks and because you can’t unlock bootloaders of carrier phones you are basically stuck on what’s provided.

It has on the unlocked non-carrier editions (I’d know, as I have one from Japan). It’s only the carrier versions that would have been delayed. This 5.1.1 release announcement also applies to the non-carrier models, with carriers to provide the update later after they finish tossing in their own extras.

  • Seshan Kumar

These changelogs are already included in Xperia Z,Zl,Zr.So Older xperia Z might get 5.1.1 as only an bug fixing update.

  • Eduardo Otero

Yeah, about a month after Z3/Z2

  • echomrg

RAW capture is really useful in post production with real editing software like photoshop or lightroom. if you don’t edit your pictures on a PC i don’t think you would get any really appreciable benefits…

  • echomrg

knocking wood i’ve never experienced any of these problems since updating my Z3C, which phone do you own? the only real problem i’m having is that the haptic feedback for keypresses sometimes turns off mid-use but, considering it didn’t start just after the update, i’m thinking more of a google keyboard problem or an hardware one.

oh, i’m actually having bluetooth connection problems too but just with one very cheap chinese knock-off audio adapter, my alpine car stereo always works without a hitch.

  • nick sweden

no i dont think so :) its gonna be alright :)

Camera2 API is not necessarily about photo editing packages, it’s about letting 3rd party camera apps have direct access to the camera’s features.

  • echomrg

i was only referring to the RAW part of the API.
everything else might be useful but i don’t see RAW capture as anything revolutionary on a phone: nice to have but wouldn’t make or break a phone (especially considering that a 20mpixel RAW would be a HUGE file)

  • what difference does this make from a user’s point of view?

  • Hideg Jen? Péter

Arc S didn’t, but did mini pro.
    Also xperia P and S did 4.1.2.
Arc S became became average performance in ICS they decided decline update to 4.1.2, the reasons: end of cycle time support. Had ics got poorly performance and had quick update 4.1.2 got much better performance with xperia mini pro

  • kido

Raw and full manual mode please please please please !

  • kami

Do any of you suffer with the Z3 problem (I have the Dual chip 6633 unlocked on AT&T), where you lose LTE connectivity and signal strength goes to almost zero when Wifi is enabled? I read in another sub that there’s no solution, the only workaround is to disable LTE, leaving the phone as 3G instead. Any other experiences? Tks!

Iphone 4s pictures taken in .tif format (lossless compression) can be stunning. I know the sensor is small but don’t underestimate its full potential. When processed well I could not distinguish them from pictures taken on a APS-C sensor. Z2/3 could do even better.
