Sony trialling new Android concept software; seeks beta users in Sweden

by XB on 20th July 2015

in Android, Firmware

Sony Concept for AndroidSony Mobile is working on a new Android concept software build for Xperia devices. Sony says that the concept Sony Android software brings a “fresh take on the Sony user experience”. Judging by the language, it looks like this is not so much the move to the next major Android release, but perhaps more of a wholesale change on the Xperia UI that we have been used to so far.

Sony Xperia Z3 owners in Sweden are able to evaluate this new concept by joining a select beta. This will give these users a chance to test the software in full and provide feedback to Sony. The beta will take place between 27 July and 13 September 2015. If you want to sign up, click here. We can’t wait to hear more, the timing of the UI could very well coincide with the launch of Sony’s next flagship.

Thanks Diego and Lars!

The new Xperia UI should follow material design but replace flat style with transparency / glass-like effect

benchmarks for geeks and i do not fucking know why anyone else would buy a samfuck. they are laggy as hell, have a ugly ui and the phones are ugly too

Sony’s lollipop feel like the closest they have ever been to stock Android, but since lollipop is such garbage, that’s a bad thing this time. I’ve tried it on a Z3c and on 720p, 4.7″ all these lollipop wasted void spaced are horrible. Google selfishly designed lollipop only for their own 6″ Nexus. The quick settings panel brings us back 4 years in functionality too, lacking shortcuts to the settings menu options.

    1) Xperia UI lacks of smooth animation, every parts of the Xperia UI needs more smooth continuous animations and all app icons, setting icons and other system icons they’re all should be circle

    2) I hate the recent app screen, it’s so ugly. Sony must remove the small app bar from the bottom. The small app bar should hide in the right screen side, I mean user can swipe the small app bar out from the right edge whenever wanna use it (the small app bar is always hide)

    3) the Xperia UI need more transparency / glass-like effect (something like What’s new app)

    4) Xperia UI needs the new colourful wallpaper/live wallpaper

Sony is doing some smart moves for their future updates and changes. Beta testers for Android 5.0.2, beta testers for new UI and updating whole Z line up. Great job Sony! The only thing I hope we’ll get is manual camera in 5.1, this would make my Z3C a perfect phone!

  • What I’m scared of is that someone at Sony saw that Samsung is selling a lot of phones and that also LG’s mobile division is making a profit, and what they have that Sony doesn’t is a bloated UI with a long list of poorly implemented features. I hope I’m wrong on this.

  • Andrew Erohin

Why making own OS on the basis of existing one? It looks like reinventing the bike, because it won’t be something REALLY different. I’m sure there should be more consolidation instead of further fragmentation. We can already see some faults on Android OS example – many devices, many hardware, many OS versions, all that leads to optimization troubles, the majority of phones encounter different annoying glitches. If every manufacturer would make his own OS, it would be a nightmare for application developers, who would have to provide compatibillity to this bunch of OS, which will lead to decrease of software amount for this or that phone. In my opinion it is pointless and even harmful.

nope, i like that thing just the way it is, it’s already great for me. no need to make it brighter

i imagine if our pull down notification bar will have translucency when we swipe it down, like the notifications theirselves are still there, but the background will be translucent, and also, when we go to album, video, and music apps, when we swipe to the left (when we want to go to folders, collections, songs, albums, etc), the screen of the home app itself have to be translucent, and I’d like to see some more stuff like that too with other sony apps too, or even tweak their overall ui.

get out of your crave and stop talking bullshit please

You said that the bullshit but you don’t even use TSF Shell, so ridiculous

  • Alvin

i really don’t hate samsung that much.. but it’s just give me this nice feeling when mocking that thing in front of my family, friends, and you all.

but to be honest, i like their UI, but not as much as i liked sony’s 2012 UI (Xperia S), their Xperia X1&X2, their KK, and Lollipop UI.

but the worst, like, really worst UI I have ever seen is still LG’s, especially the old ones

  • Alvin

since original s until s5 i see plenty of lags when i tried it at stores, my friends’, or by looking at youtube/web. but i still have this feeling with s6 that it will lag.

well that s6 being “the best smartphone in 2015” thing. well, i just can’t at stop laughing…lol :D:D:D:D because what makes it exciting to most people that it has a major overhaul on ‘DESIGN MATERIAL’ but brought the same design since s1, they just changed the materials that made it feels and looks more premium, but stick with the same old yet not that good design to me, although the material is good (even they copied sony for using glass at front and back and aluminium frame). that also made my mom couldn’t see the different between all those samsung phones (fortunately i can). when looking at stores, my mom wants to try an s6, but she ended up looking and handling a note 4. what thing that made me giggle a lot is when she said this with a lot of happiness “wow, this is huge, i like this, i want this now, it feels good in my palm, it’s awesome”, and ended up being ashamed because the samsung guy told her “that is an s6, madam”

  • Alvin

well not really. my Z3 with lollipop feels faster than s6. i like the ui on both though

  • Alvin

well i used it in my z3.

  • Alvin

yeah let’s hope for the best then

  • Timel

This is not garbage at all
I don’t mean that Xperia UI must go hard with 3d effects like TSF Shell but this time Sony must play with the new cool things with their UI, Sony must think different and then make a difference.

Yeah but fanboy like you are such a obstructive person
Of course fanboys will never want Sony to improve anything, fanboys’ve always thought that their Sony is already great… Lol that’s such a sad story.

well you seems butthurt badly though, go to doctor or psychic, timel, cause something not right inside you.

  • Matt

So here is my opinion on the UI thing. .

Sony lollipop UI is good , like the material-esque style of it and yet I can still feel that it is still Sony -made.

What I want for the next design :
Just improve on what you have , like launcher with more customisation for example icon pack support (unlikely).and please repair the volume toggle , it is really irritating not able to silence my phone while listening to music. The rest can stay the same , don’t mind them.

    What I dont want :
Please remove the transparent element like on what’s new(gasp), it really segregated with the rest of material UI. Just like kitkat UI.

I don’t get people still hung up with dark theme , and pas I saw on the comment don’t use the shell as reference at all it is garbage. too many animation is really straining senses. Follow material design guidelines and you’ll be fine Sony .

  • Utsav Shah

Bring on the “What’s new app” UI to whole system!

  • Svnjay

No, the current lock screen is fine.

  • Alvin

what makes you think it’s ‘clear’ that i dont use TSF? you’re my brother or something? or you’re my phone that you know that much about me and my phones? of course i’ve used TSF, well i didn’t buy it, i have an apk online, but still you’re like underestimating me because you thought that i’m so poor that i can’t buy anything from google play. FYI I’ve spent like 100$ (or less) on google play. Because you are the one who didn’t use TSF now. Hey I like TSF so bad, but i returned to stock launcher because it eats ram and my battery, especially battery.

and even when you said sony should use ui like tsf. and then when they do it, you and every damn stupid people in this stupid world said “why you made ui like this if it drains my battery ” or “my battery drains after this new sony launcher updated to the latest version” or something like that.

because those are your type, timel. you just shout but not work, that’s why everyone (well, most of us) here hate you badly

  • Alvin

  • Alvin

yeah. especially the volume toggle thing that is bugging me badly

one thing that i disagree on you, about that transparency thing. that is really good to me, if they want what’s new app to be the same as what it is today, they should implement it to others too. and it’s also didn’t work for that weather widget, it is disconnected from the whole sony ui, especially on lollipop.

  • Svnjay

    Yay! You’re back :D

  • Svnjay

Most people in Scandinavia speak English.

  • Alvin

yeah, i just spent and waste my time on writing long comments just for him which makes me mad at myself because i’ve hurt my fingers

we can’t see difference between sony’s ui because they release flagships in every freakin 6 freakin months, just look at the difference between Z1 and Z3 ui or z2 and z3+ ui(that is just as same as we compare s5 with s6). they’re very different.

well even if you said material is ugly, doesn’t mean everyone also thought the same thing.. stop being a nazi with trying to affect people or preventing them for what their choices of life

  • Matt

Appreciated, but let me raise you these argument about transparency.

It is pretty old, I know it looks beautiful and nice. But it really feels disconnected to Google and every apps that adopt material language.

If you still use kitkat like I do, it feels like there is 2 world in this phone, one is Sony’s and the other is Google’s. And I do not like that.

  • Timel

I’d like to see something closer to stock Android. Too many manufacturers obsess over custom UI’s when most users couldn’t care less about them. I’ve never heard anyone, ever quote a UI as a reason to buy a device.

  • Matt

Nope , kill the transparent UI entirely. It separate itself too far from material and doenst look good together

  • Timel

Creating their own OS It’s quite too late for Sony in smartphone world now, iOS and Android have gone so far… Except Sony will make the PlayStation phone, explain PlayStation platform to mobile world, I mean the smartphone and tablet that use PlayStation OS, PlayStation Store and other ecosystems of PlayStation. I think PlayStation is very strong and still have space for it.

  • Timel

    I prefer transparent entirely then
    Flat looks fugly and cheap

“material and doenst look good together”
    Such a artless though
iOS 8 and Windows 10 can combine flat and transparent together
So Why Sony have to follow every single step of Google?

You think Sony is just a hardware company that they shouldn’t mess with software too much, right?

  • PasserBy

Well they’re beta testing on the Z3, it’ll get something at least :/

  • Timel

Transparency effect looks classy and deserves with beautiful design of Xperia smartphone.

  • Tanya E. Rider
  • Matt

no you’re wrong you do not know what i’m thinking .

well we can debate on design all day and still wont reach the same opinion . it is a matter of taste i suppose. after i see youre pithing the frankly appalling looking TSF shell , i get how your taste in design are.

    Now for the counter argument.

flat looks cheap , what use flat at all? IOS uses flat element , does it look cheap ? and i never seen a transparent element on windows phone at all. if you meant windows 10 desktop , we are talking about phone here.
Besides material is more than just flat.

what i say is i wanted my phone to be whole , one language of design . and every android phone do have google apps and material design on them. So why bother reinventing the wheel when the one we got is already good ?

By that i do not mean to not change anything at all and be the same and copy google 100%. sony can polish not-so-good looking apps like the dialler in lollipop (it is really bad ) and synchronize their feature with google. there is more than 1 interpretation of Material but transparent skin isn’t one of them.

and on top of that put a theme engine that can please everyone . (more in depth , like icon mod) , so if people ant their phone look gaudy they can.

ill raise you this , shout all you want abut transparent skin , but you can quote me on this, it will not happen any time soon.

  • jxPerience

Great news for me..I’m tired of stocky UI of xperia, i want something different, a more sony touch not an android lollipop touch. Sony should be bring UI has no other

  • jxPerience

i don’t like the stock android really, if they does, it seems im using china phones with Sony Logo on it. I want sony to keep the UI away from stock. Better with Class

  • jxPerience

transparency put xperia classier than any other manufacturers. Knowing Sony, they always differentiate themselves to others.

  • jxPerience

i want multifunction home botton, im tired of the current one. I hope they could implement on multifuction home botton that can be use like touch pad and gestures.
    swipe left > back
    swipe right > recent apps
    swipe up > utilities toggle
    swipe down> notification toggle
    single press > home
double touch > same function like apple reachability
double press > open small apps
triple press > activate the multi window

i want a single botton with multifunction. bring it on Sony, call it XGate

  • Matt

its just like saying putting gold on everything will make them classier.
like vertu, gold everywhere but not beautiful at all.

guys dont just point on one thing like transparency, look at the whole picture, in this case the Whole ui of the phone.

if sony make everything transparent (which is really unlikely now that they are following material design closely) , and you open youtube , and everything is bold and colourful , it will clash .

its like forcing a classic old victorian style living room on a modern minimalist house , it doesnt make sense at all.

  • Rafael Nunes

Seeing these people talking about What’s New app UI I’ve started to imagine a Music app with the What’s New UI, and how great this could be

  • Joe Black

    You’re being extremely subjective.
A lot of people including myself, consider the What’s New app to be a great guideline for Sony to follow in with their complete UI design overhaul, and to really step out in front of the competition.
So you comparing it to “putting gold everywhere” and the last paragraph you wrote is kinda patronizing and condescending to the people with a different point of view.

  • Timel

The UI of What’s New app is the combination between flat and transparency / glass-like effect which is so beautiful

    I prefer something like this

  • Matt

I’m sorry if I sound patronising.

But,please do give me logical counter argument why my opinion is wrong?

Transparency was good. But I do believe it isn’t really the case with android 5.0 and up. why? Since you can’t have Google phone without Google apps or without access to play store which uses material.

Why Sony have to segregate their apps from Google by using transparent elements which not part of the whole point of material? It is basically back to square one.

On that note, what’s new app is visually great, sadly not relevant anymore. There is the way though to use transparency. Downgrade to stock rom 4.4.4 and disable update services for all Sony app. Job done :)

  • Well i will admit S6 sucks at multitasking samsung conpletly forgot about it this year but root fixes it which is unfortunate because i expected Samsung to quickly fix it

  • Leonardo D Monkey

…. finally SONY get it’s ass up to change that old ugly UI.
