Xperia Z1_14.6.A.0.368Let the countdown begin – the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop firmware update has been certified by the PTCRB for the Sony Xperia Z1, Z Ultra and Z1 Compact in the form of build number 14.6.A.0.368. The build number has been certified across most variants for each handset: Xperia Z1 (C6902, C6903, C6943, C6906), Xperia Z Ultra (C6802, C6833, C6843, C6806) and Xperia Z1 Compact (D5503).

A software update page for Australian carrier Telstra confirms that this latest update will include a patch for the Stagefright exploit “including the recently released patch for CVE-2015-3864.” Telstra points to an end-September release, but we would expect the generic firmware versions to be released much sooner. We’ll let you know once the firmware starts to roll.

Does anybody know if this 5.1 build will restore ability to use the volume keys to put phone into silent mode? And also cut off ringtone if someone calls and you want to quickly silence the tone?? It annoyed me in Lollipop 5.0 that if somebody called and I pressed the volume button, it’d just turn up/down the ringtone rather than cutting it off! Just one of the many reasons I went back to Kitkat 4.4.4

  • nick sweden

Yes it will anyway on z3c ;-) hope it will on this firmware to ;-)

  • nick sweden

    Freaking awesome very soon ;-)

  • agujeronegro

Weird, I have a Xperia Z1 on lollipop, 5.0. And when someone calls me I can press the volume buttons to silent the phone.

  • Alex

But does it silence the phone instantly, or do you have to keep pressing volume down to silence the ringtone??

  • Same as agujeronegro, I just press it once and it mutes the ringtone ! On Z1 Compact Lollipop

  • Alex

That’s odd. When I had 5.0 Lollipop (the first release for Z1 C) I used to have to hold volume down to make it silence the ringtone gradually rather than it muting straight away with one press like on Kitkat (or JellyBean)

  • Jaissal S

I can’t wait to update. However, the new Xperia device/devices will have my attention also.

  • Paul M

looking forwards to this. I’m still on kitkat.

  • MurF-A-Zoid

What about the T-Mobile Sony Xperia Z1s? Please Sony get with T-Mobile and make things right again.

T-Mobile already forget about the Sony Xperia Z!

  • Hello

  • Luis

Hopefully this helps with the Home screen laggy refresh or rendering of icons.

  • mukul verma

Hopefully Sony dev had fix the calling in 2g mode where the other person didn’t hear me clearly out. In 5.0.2 only 3g mode was working gud. I am still in kitkat because of this issue.

  • MoYeung

Probably end of September for Canada, too.

  • hansip

Z1 series will be updated in (8) following weeks.. Nicely done.. Smh..

But hey better than never.. ;(

  • fried_egg

What is the chance I will have a Z5 in my hand before my Z1 upgrades… and why was the stagefright patch not pushed on its own

  • bao trung giang

plz don’t have bugs this time!

  • Matthias

I’m still waiting for the OTA upgrade to 5.1 on my Z3 Tablet Compact (SGP621) … is that normal? Does it make sense to wait longer? (I’ve had it for weeks on my Z3 Compact…)

I was hoping that I could avoid installing the PC Companion … but if the OTA never comes …

  • tako

just debrand your phone it is easy as hell does not void garantie just google

My Battery issue since my Lollipop 5.0.2 up-grade end of spring this year has become more and more problematic. The measurement of the battery left seams hazardeous now on Z1 C6903. Sometimes it lasts less than 15mn from # full charge to a security shutdown of the phone, that happens a few seconds after the phone displays less than 50% charge left…. All the back is heating hardly, especially near the back camera, even when I don’t use that camera at all. Sometimes the back flash light comes on without me using the camera nor any application meant to light it up. Then I have to reboot the phone to turn it down… Strange.
I have to be always connected to a charger or an external battery now. This has made my summer vacations a nightmare this year. My second professional phone (Motorola G2) and my new Xperia Z4 LTE+WiFi Tablet also moved to 5.0.2 since that, and also experience lower autonomy and strange heatings of the devices too, but loosing less than 1/3rd of former battery life, so nothing as dramatic as what I experience on my beloved Z1 and that is getting more and more dramatic as times goes on.
I hope this new 5.1 Up-Grade will solve this and I’ll load it as soon as available to me in France with that hope.
Unless my battery itself needs to be replaced…. Which is un-expected after only 2.5 years of usage, but not impossible, as I had to recharge it at least twice per day so far, so depending the battery quality used by Sony, it could also be weared out now…

  • Vlad

probably you should replace your battery, my Z1’s battery also had problems, but after i replaced it, the battery life was much better. also, you can replace it on your own, it’s really easy

  • fried_egg

ive noticed its really easy to accidentally tap the “torch” option on the quick settings (double pull down) when really wanting to toggle on or off wifi etc

  • Freepat 75014

Vlad, I will wait for this next Firmware up-grade to make sure this was not a SW bug, then if it continues I will replace the battery, likely via Sony Maintenance centers as it’s not removable. Sure I’ll check eBay and Amazon for do-it-yourself cheaper alternatives, but would prefer a Sony original one… to be franck.
Note that I also bought in June two Tronsmart multi-USB ports chargers, with one port supporting Qualcom Quick Charge 2.0, and other 2 to 3 ports only supporting Volt I/Q 1A to 2.4A 5V, supposed to be auto-sense on all ports including QC2.0. One for the home and one for the car. I only use the Volt I/Q auto-sense ports for my old Z1, keeping the QC2.0 port only for the Xperia Z4 Tablet supposed to support it properly. Never had any error message on the Z1 phone using that, and I also tried the QC2.0 port for a few seconds with no errors either. In all cases Z1 charges at same speed as if it was a basic 5W USB charger (5V * 1A), never mind I connect it to the chargers via std Micro-USB or via Sony Magnetic cables, so it seams the autosense works… But wondering if using such modern fact chargers could have accelerated the wearing of my battery…. Big doubt here to be franck.
My plan is to buy a new Phone by next year anyway. I would love a new Xperia Z5 or Z5+ announced next week, except lack of USB-C on them is a disappointment for me… Will depend what the others announce at IFA. In the meantime, if i replace the Battery of the Z1 I’ll return to my old 5W USB Chargers to take no risks with the new battery…Just in case.

Changelog is just bug fixes, performance fixes and a few hidden stuff included.. ;)

  • Zoran

    What’s with t-mobile z2?
    Still nothing.

  • Syed Ameen

    Hi Mate,
I’m facing the exact same issue on my Z1 (C6902). And i saw a few more ppl complaining the same issue on their Z1. I charge it to full, just in 5 mins its on 90% or 80% and it just switches off. I put it to charge while switched off it shows 2% and again gotta charge but it charges really fast. I mean abnormally fast. And after a while i simply reboot the device just to have a check on it, now it displays 50 – 40%. Its really annoying and i too strongly felt that its a software bug but when i go to service centre, they suggest its some hardware fault.. considering that its just a 1.2 years since i bought the phone, its hard to believe there can be battery issue. It really pisses me off when i have to keep it charging every 10 mins. From a long battery life to just 10 mins charge or always plugged to charger is just horrible. Its a beautiful phone, no doubt but that was when i was on 4.4.4 which was the best and really stable.

Would you pls let me know if you figure it out if it was a hardware problem or just a lollipop bug?? I would be very thankful.

  • Freepat 75014

Syed, i’ll let you know In my case the phone charges as slowly as normally. Say more than 1h for a full charge, and much more if i use it while it charges, Just it heats dramatically while being used, mainly on its black and arround the back caméra, even when not using any caméra since last reboot. That discharges the battery from 100% charge down to 50% in less than 15mn. And few seconds after it passes 50% it operates an automatic sécurité shut down. Then when i plug it Just after, to a charger without booting it up, the % of charge left displayed can be anything from 0% to 84% unexpectively…

  • Freepat 75014

Thanks. Could explain the Light on. Thanks. But no change to battery issue.

  • Syed Ameen

Oh yes.. Just like you said, anything from 0% to 84%.. I’m just hoping that its just a software bug..

  • Cool2B

I dont think it was caused by lollipop. I have my battery changed by myself which you can source the parts from online. Seem that the battery can only last average 2 years life span. although the battery condition shows good but you will realize that it won’t hold for a day as you previously experience.

  • Jaspreet Brar

gud gud now give it in few hours. :P

  • aa

all of you guys are idiot! don’t be so excited for the upcoming update since it will still utilized the same source code with the only some tweaks. the real thing is the android M.

I don’t think we’ll see Android M, it’s barely gone beyond beta and for specific devices only, by the time it’s making its way to the early Z series (Z Ultra, Z2 etc) I think our devices will be too old. Kudos to Sony for even giving us 5.1.1

  • Paul M

I just checked using FlashTool and no update yet for C6833 – Z Ultra LTE

is it possible to we get double tap on our device in next updates (if we get next update, i mean on android m mostly)? And what do you think will we get android m on Z1, Z1c and Z Ultra?

  • Fadi Obaya

The kernel supports it from Z1, ZU and so on. But Sony is just plain lazy to not enable it at all.

  • SPSP1

You can try the QuietModes app from Play store and see if it helps.

  • Piyush

Yes bro too having the same issue with my xz1..after ihv upgraded my z1 to 5.0 its getting very slower and battery too draining fast ..hopefully the next firmware will sort out this issue

  • Piyush

exactly …bro .it sucks ..having the same prob..

  • I think it is a software bug myself, and have been waiting on 5.1 for ages in a hope of rectifying it. My phone was only about 15 months old when this problem started in May for me – and by no small coincidence it started less than 24 hours after the update to Lollipop. Before this I’d never had an issue – the phone had never crashed, the battery had never rapidly declined. And all of a sudden it was.

Now I have to have an external battery attached permanently like a life-support system. Without it the odds of the phone falling to anywhere near 75% before crashing and taking the battery with it are minimal.

It’s rendered the phone unusable on its own, and Sony have been incredibly unhelpful. I’m waiting for the new update which will hopefully get rid of this problem for good, but it’s also getting close to the end of my warranty so Sony had better hurry up. If it doesn’t start functioning properly again, they can wave goodbye to me buying another Xperia…and I’ll be buying a new rival phone with the money I’d have otherwise spent on a PS4.

  • Piyush

the icon rendering is an big issue …is there any method to sort this out.?

  • mukul verma

android M will be arriving on z1 series & above, not for old z series phones.

  • Paul M

interesting. that’s the first I’ve heard of that.
    can you give a citation?
will the Z Ultra be included?

  • mukul verma

while surfing I see this about Huawei, but there is also info about sony upgrade program. uptil z1 will get android M. may be this can be wrong, but I don’t see older z series will get M, hopefully z ultra get because of same processor as z1.

  • sokheng Xperia

My phone not yet for received is version. I don’t know why

  • Fadi Obaya

    Now rolling out

  • aa

M will be arriving to z1 since there is already an official instruction of sony on how to flash the Dev. Preview ROM into the z series except the original z. 5.1 will come likely as prerequisite to M. IMO

  • aa

hoping that the update will start rolling out a week from after making it was certified. Im sick with the memory leak bug of the 5.0, it really drains my battery fast. plus the heating issue.

  • Jaspreet Brar

    really? :0

  • Fadi Obaya

Same with mine. But I already got 5.1.1 on my Z ultra. :)

  • Ritch

Updating to LP was a disaster till i made a factory reset, on screen time is as it was before, 3 hours! Running smooth again :-). Don;t see any problems with 5.1.1 just a small update.

I’ve been running 5.1.1 for a week now, having used a pre-rooted Zip file to upgrade.

Overall I’m very pleased, it seems solid. However, it does seem to have occasional problems hanging on to wifi. Just me?
