Is Sony using two different screens for the Xperia C5 Ultra?

in Problems, Xperia C5 Ultra

Xperia C5 Ultra Display_1Users in Hong Kong are reporting that Sony Mobile may be using two different displays in the Xperia C5 Ultra. There appears to be tangible differences to the displays used in the white Xperia C5 Ultra’s versus the black models.

By entering the service menu of the phones (*#*#7378423#*#*), it shows there are two different hardware types being used. The good one on the black models show “Truly” in the ‘LCM Hardware’ line, whilst the white model has “Innolux” which is believed to be the worse model.

The pictures below show some comparison images between both versions, which corroborate what users are reporting. Obviously this is not definitive and it may only affect a small sample, but we’ll keep an eye on this as the phone sees a wider release.

i have a black xperia m2 and my friend has the same but in white and the screens also are very different :/

  • Gitarooman

funny the suposedly inferior white model looks better to me.

  • Svnjay

The white model looks washed out.

  • Confruggy

But the black model has an yellow touch which i don’t like.

  • Pingback: Sony caught using different LCD panels (with varying image quality) on Xperia C5 Ultra | Pocketnow()

  • Svnjay

That’s cool, we all have our preference. I think they’re both bad displays.

  • Confruggy

It’s a 6″ midranger and that for a low price. It can’t be a good display.

  • Svnjay

The Moto X Style and Play are cheaper and have better displays.

  • ryq24

What does “Truly” and “Innolux” mean?

  • Vinicius Araujo

No, they don’t. They aren’t even IPS.

  • Svnjay

You don’t know that. Motorola states that it’s a TFT screen and IPS is a type of TFT display.

  • Vinicius Araujo

IPS is a type of TFT display. So, X Style and X Play feature TFT screens without IPS technology (which enhance color accuracy and viewing angles), that’s the point.

  • Svnjay

How are you so sure that it isn’t an IPS?

  • Vinicius Araujo

    Because Motorola said so.

  • Svnjay

When did they? I didn’t see it on any tech blogs.

  • MoYeung

Touch panel is different; Elan vs. Synaptics

  • Vinicius Araujo
  • Svnjay

Ah, I don’t see the difference but i’ll give you the benefit of the doubt :)

  • mohsen

FCK sony that use samsung MMC :'((((((

  • I_can_wait_4ever

Viewing angle of the white is good

  • Alvin

the white model have better viewing angle but worse blacks.

  • Alvin

different screens to use in one product is common, even for other manufacturers, but even both have different screens, it should have the same quality, if not same, similar. But only sony (i think) has different screens for some models, they have like 2 display models in some products, but Z series like Z3 (as far as i know) have 4 display models with different quality in each.

  • Alvin

because their mmc is good and one of the better ones :”

just wish sony to make their own mmc, but can’t:”

  • Alvin

both of them are two different manufacturers

  • Pingback: Sony’s Xperia C5 Ultra Could Be Using Two Different Screens - LocurasGeek - Tecnologia e Internet y Juegos()

  • jokensy

The viewing angle is better on the white one.

  • mountain

If they are using 2 types of cpu, why can’t they use 2 types on screen?

  • Richard Fong

Not the first time. Remember the T/TX screen scandal? They haven’t done this for a while on a flagship handset but I’m not surprised on mid-ranger.

  • GregLu

But the colors seems not accurate :(

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

This is old news, Sony always does this. Even with their flagship devices there will be different display panels.

  • gamer324

Honestly I fail to see how one is better than the other, the white one has a slightly reddish hue (easily fixable through White Balance utility) and the black model has a slight yellow hue head-on. As for the viewing angles, the camera never points at the white model’s extreme diagonals whereas it does for the black one. Far as I’m aware all IPS screens color shift at their diagonals, on one it is yellowish and on the opposite one it is bluish, resulting in neutral color reproduction when viewed at any angle but those corners.

  • gamer324

Exactly, for the money this is about what you get, these aren’t ‘bad’ panels in anyway just not the best of the best that are reserved for flagships.

  • daniel kudo

Nope toshiba and hitachi much better mmc than samsung

  • daniel kudo

Omg, sony has its own display company: JDI. And even if JDI is too expensive to use, why Sony not used Sharp or even LG display? Innolux and “Truly LCM” is garbage

  • Alvin

I said “one of the better” right? Not the best…:)

  • Alvin

Yeah i admit it, toshiba made the best to me. But samsung is one of the better too

    bitch please, talk to Timel

  • Micro

I wonder which one will be the “main” release. I love the colors from the black one and love the angles of the white one. My pick – the black one, as I never share my phone with random side buddies lol. Too bad I’d need to choose, if I could anyway. Shame on you, Sony. I love you and I always will (I guess), but still – shame on you.

  • Nawi

    2 types of CPU?

  • H-R-K

But see Samsung J5, J7, E5, E7s display is Amoled.

  • Timel

This bullshit bot deserves with all bullshit fanboys here ^_^

  • Timel

No wonder at all why Sony never get success in mobile industry

This double standard shows how much shitty Sony is.

  • Flythe

    Double standards you say…

  • Timel

    That sucks!
    People hate double standards

Every amoled screen is not of same quality! They too come in different varities/qualities (just like ips LCD) and don’t expect J5’s amoled to be same as s6’s.

  • Zayed Kotayba

And I don’t know why they do this , I some time thought that they actually like to destroy their own business by doing this kind of stuff

This website was my favourite but now after the new layout design it has turned into a nightmare.
The owner really turned a perfect simple layout into an ultra rubbish one.
People usually enhance the browsing experience not the other way around.
This site has become unusable on phones, every time you try reading something it just switches to another article! Huge fail and big disappointment.

  • iia3ezu

Even a small sample is bad enough. It means that Sony has been deliberately engaging in deceitful business practices, sneakily putting in inferior hardware parts to lower costs.

  • Pingback: Sony ?????????? 2 ???????? Xperia C5 Ultra?()

  • inspire

Why is it anyone’s concern, from where a company is ordering the internal components if the end result is same? Such in this case, neither innolux nor truly is that superior over one another, so why do you or end consumer has to mind over such matters?
If they use some Samsung’s memory and some Hitachi’s and so on then also will it concern you?

And it’s not just about Sony, every company does that! Example, Samsung even uses the different processor altogether! It’s all a part of supply-chain business.

  • Timel

And why customers can’t complain, their money okay? They throw their money to manufacturers. C’mon stop defending your Sony it sounds like you are trying to convince customers to accept the Sony’s mistake.

  • inspire

No one is defending Sony here. It’s a general thing applied to any company that the customer should be concerned about the performance of finished product and not regarding the internals from supplier A and B for the same product X.

But whom I’m talking to! The bot who labels every commenter here as a Sony fanboy and who always has some or the other ranting going on all the time without giving any constructive criticism anytime!

  • Typical Pony. They’ve been cutting corners left and right for years now. If you want screen consistency and quality go for a brand that is not so close to being bankrupt/sold/liquidated.

  • Yasir Fawad

U know timel, Samsung uses sony sensors, when it send review units to reviewers. While to end users they send something else. Its nornal norm between supply chains. When u take apple iPhone, they use only one supplier for each of their component. Some times use ur brain, just don’t put fanboyism in each of ur argument.

  • Yasir Fawad
  • ????? ????????

God damn Sony! Same shit with the Z3. There are 2 display types, and both of them pretty shitty, with red or yellow tints, and the corners of a screens has some shades. Sony uses very cheep LCDs even in their flagships.

I am not really concerned about internal component so I don’t care if the memory chip is from Samsung or Hitachi but what I am concerned about is the things that I can really tell the difference by seeing it with the naked eye like the display or the camera sensor.
and Yes a lot of companies do this and I had alot of devices that had this different hardware problem and it’s annoying to buy a device to find out that you have the lower version of display or what ever the case.
luck is not an option when you buy new device !!

  • daniel kudo

Nope iPhone use memory from toshiba and SK Hynix, display from JDI, LG display, and Sharp

  • daniel kudo

At least every AMOLED panel give good sunlight legibility, Perfect blacks and infinite contrast ratio

  • daniel kudo

Yap, JDI is part of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba but almost their LCD technology came from Sony display. MagicWhite, IPS NEO is one of them.

  • You mean on mobile?

  • Bashar

    Yes that’s what I meant

  • Taksa Aura-ek

A white one I saw at Sony store has an unacceptable contrast screen. It doesn’t matter if someone would like it better that way but Sony should inform us buyers of this “unique character”.

This made me seriously reconsider whether I should trust the M5 (or even Z5).

  • ryq24

    OK. Thanks!

  • ryq24

  • Russel Calachan

I have the white variant and I regret choosing that one! Blacks appear bluish when I play videos! and the colors appear washed-out / under-saturated! Though I haven’t seen the display of the black one personally, but based on the pictures, the colors look more vivid and realistic.

  • bane-vs

i have z2 and recently i got another z2 device and i notice that the
display is not the same on both mobiles, theres a difference in
white-balance/contrast although the settings are the same on both
(contrast 100%/whitebalace r0/g0/b0).on the first one the screen is a
little bit more yellowish (red alike tint-warm) and the other one is
blueish (tend to be more cool oriented) one some white background.and on
a black menus the black is more alike navy/antracide and on the other
side it normal or is one of two opened/serviced (replaced
lcd, etc)?or it can be affected by protective lcd film?
