Xperia Z5 heading to Canada; US launch looks less certain

by XB on 4th September 2015

in Xperia Z5 series

Xperia Z5 CanadaGood news for Canadian Xperia fans, Sony Mobile confirmed earlier in the week that both the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Premium will be landing in the region. This follows news at the end of July, where Sony Canada confirmed that they would not be making the Xperia Z3+ nor the Xperia Z4 Tablet available in the country. It’s a shame that the Xperia Z5 Compact has been missed off the list, but hopefully it will land off-contract at some point.

The misery for US Xperia fans continue though. There has been no word of any US carriers picking up the Xperia Z5 series so far, but this could still change at some point. T-Mobile said to Cnet that they had no plans to carry the Xperia Z5 range and Verizon made no comment about future devices, let alone confirm what is going on with the Xperia Z4v. The time taken to get the Verizon Xperia Z4v onto retail shelves could put its launch plans in jeopardy given the Xperia Z5 reveal. Whatever happens, we’ll keep you posted.

Thanks Wael!

Most of american people love iPhones and in U.S. Samsung has taken over android market for many years

  • mathieulefrancois

    And they’re missing out

  • Raj Singh

I hope this is available in Canada unlocked with no carrier branding.

  • nfs2010

Great news for the US people as long as they officially sell the unlocked versions (with US warranty). B&H, Newegg will hopefully carry those as usual & contracts are dying in the US anyway. I’ll still get an import as warranty has never been on my list & I’ve always felt for the tmobile folks (they don’t have contracts) who paid retail price for tmobile branded Z/Z1/Z3 :P

  • Timel

I heard that even Samsung have released S6 Edge+ and Note 5 but still can’t help Samsung from the biggest lose in history hehe, So it means that in U.S. Samsung Galaxy is losing popularity, Maybe Sony should take advantage from this situation, I means something like “do the marketing for Z5 family in U.S. like crazy”

And Like we all know, PS4 is very popular in U.S. May be SCE america and Sony Mobile america should team up and do something special for american people.

  • jmaxim917

Hoping AT&T will pick up all 3 but I doubt it very much. Anyway, Sony has always been plagued with production issues. Case in point, has the Z4v been released on Verizon as yet? Seriously, who’s in charge at Sony Mobile?

  • nfs2010

Just curious – Why do you wanna pay retail price for ATT branded crap if you’re not on contract?

  • jmaxim917

Contracts aren’t really dying. The carriers have simply changed the name to EDGE, NEXT, etc.

  • nfs2010

& you still pay more than BYOD. There’s simply zero reason to fall for those traps.

  • Along with that, who’s in charge of phone releases at Verizon? Along with software updates. I read somewhere the Z3v is still on KitKat???

  • Gitarooman

reply to the tweet and let them know, like what I did. The more reply they receive the better.

  • DanielGearSolid

Stop going thru carriers dammit… its a waste of time and money. Just sell it unlocked in electronics stores

  • DanielGearSolid

All they have to do is show that chrome color, and say “worlds first 4k phone” and its over

  • Paul

Not to mention that carrier branded phones are loaded with carrier bloatware, carrier logos within the software and on the phone itself (ugly), and often receive late firmware updates or no updates at all. Not to mention features that are removed by the carrier depending on the carrier…

  • mike

it is very stupid to buy contract phone.

  • nfs2010

Yet, people run to the carrier stores to grab those junks in the US. Like Daniel said, Sony can push unlocked phones in the US by placing them next to their TVs, PS4, & other stuff in BB, WM, etc (with installment plans like the carriers offer) & making some Moto like noise about their online availability.

  • Paul

I bought my Z3 D6603 from Clove UK and they shipped it to me in California. Before I ordered I contacted Sony Mobile USA on two separate occasions to verify that the warranty would be honored in the USA. They replied “yes” on both occasions with the caveat that it could take more than 14 days (their typical warranty turnaround time) due to the need to import repair parts. The UK version also had a 2-year warranty.

  • Anukul

In America, people think carrier prices are the right prices – $200 (but they forget the contract) , then when they see $699 unlocked, they say it’s total rip off.

  • nfs2010

The ‘caveat’ applies to the Sony phones sold through US carriers as well. So you did the best thing & also got 2 year warranty. In the worst case, you could always ship it to Sony UK for repair. People did it – not that big of a deal really.

  • Lio

eh? i’ve already pre-ordered from clove UK. guess, i’ll wait which one has the better offer. hopefully some freebies in the bag.

  • corey

Does anyone know if all of the phones are the same no matter which country they’re being sold in? I placed a pre-order on Amazon UK for the Compact, and I was going to cancel it once it went up for (pre-)order in the US. But now that it’s looking like US availability is in question, will I be missing any GSM bands or anything else if I just keep my pre-order of the UK device? The UK device has to be exactly the same as the US one, right?

  • Ying wah

The UK version is actually the international version, so it would be the same. The only difference would be that it would come with a UK charging adapter

  • Paul

You know, the unlocked D6603 was eventually officially sold through the online USA Sony Store (as well as B&H, etc.) so the parts delay they initially mentioned may not even be a factor now. Oddly, they don’t show that model of Z3 in the phone list on the Sony Mobile USA website. They only show Verizon and T-Mobile variants.

  • corey

Oh right, damn. That’s disappointing because I know they’re using some proprietary fast charging charger, so I won’t want to just use any old charger lying around. I guess I’ll just keep hoping that it pops up on Amazon US in the coming days so I can get my order in as soon as possible.

  • nfs2010

It’s a ‘standard fast charger’. US editions usually comes with the least amount of goodies. You have to buy it separately anyway.

  • Paul

Other minor differences is that the UK version would have a UK firmware. The practical differences from a USA firmware would be that ‘LTE’ might be called ‘4G’ within the UI and firmware updates could possibly arrive at different times since they typically roll out in stages based on regions. This could be resolved by flashing equivalent USA firmware onto the device using Flashtool (assuming a USA model is eventually released).

  • Abhi

It would be nice if international versions sold well but here (US) are reasons for the reverse:

The T-mobile Z3 was $625 on launch and subsidies are disappearing in the US.

Bloat ware sucks but T-mobile gave me one day replacements for my Z3 when I had issues, Sony said it would take 4-6 weeks minimum if if I went through them. And no I don’t have insurance on it.

Bands can be an issue on some carriers as T-mobile had to certify devices for band 12 VoLTE, if a non TMO certified device is used and you want to make a call you will have full signal but no call ability as you can’t switch to 4G in areas with only band 12 LTE (rare issue but bad for emergencies)

  • corey

So Sony makes their chargers (including whatever proprietary fast charger they’re introducing alongside the Z5s) available to be bought separately?

  • corey

That’s good to know. I think I could live with that, though.

  • corey

I’ve never bought a phone made by Sony, so this is new territory for me.

  • nfs2010

It’s not proprietary. It’s called Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 compatible charger. You could buy it from Sony or other third parties. They all have their own fancy names (Moto Turbo charger & what not). Just make sure that the charger is Qualcomm certified & QC 2.0 compatible. Here’s a cheap one.

    http://www.amazon.com/Qualcomm-Certified-Aukey-Charger-Included/dp/B00QEX83LA/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1441406297&sr=1-1&keywords=aukey+quick+charge+2.0

  • corey

    That’s great to hear. Thanks

  • nfs2010

Or just use an ipad charger if you have one already. It works as a fast charger for Z3+ too lol. But I’m not responsible if it kills your battery lol

  • Abhi

Depends on carrier, I paid $625 on launch for Z3 with T-Mobile and they have 0 interest monthly payment plans for those who can’t pay all at once. I hate the minor bloat but device replacement was done on same day or within one day when I had issues. Sony said 6 weeks for the same. I would still prefer unbranded but I guess there are trade offs.

  • Abhi

Ironically Samsung mistreated their own US marketing department after the success of the S2/3 refusing to credit them for their great success and insulting them by saying their success was “hyped”, many of them left….

  • Abhi

Europe gets the goodies for all OEM’s like free screen guard and high end headphones in some areas. Oh and the updates too lol.

  • corey

I don’t have an iPad, so you’re safe.

  • jmaxim917

Are u suggesting you’re not on contract?

  • nfs2010

Yep, they also pay more than what we do over here ;)

  • Raj Singh

    Get a room.

  • nfs2010

Well, you could do paypal credit at Newegg or B&H. It’s even more flexible! But yes, in-store replacement is a good factor ‘if’ they agree to give you a different one. Still slow updates, buggy fw on carrier versions are just not worth it.

  • Shamoy Rahman

    How about both?

  • Miguel Ortiz

Time to import from Canada xD

  • Abhi

You are right about B&H, but remember your average Joe sees the immediate convenience. I agree about the rest of your reply too. Still waiting for my 5.1 update on Z3 for TMO, well better than Verizon whose Z3 is still on KitKat lol.

  • Abhi

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that lol.

  • nfs2010

At least on ATT branded Sony phones, you could flash a generic international /Canadian ROM & be done with the bloats. That’s the first thing I did on my first Sony phone (ATT X10). But I heard Tmob versions can get bricked easily. But you should still check out XDA.

Only way Sony can attract the Joes by offering their phones at BB, WM stores. As they’re starting from zero, they’d have to drop a big chunk on marketing too – chicken & egg problem there.

  • J Cav the Great

For once in my life I wish I did not live in the U.S…..

  • J Cav the Great

But unfortunately, Sony doesn’t, hell, they even closed down all their retail stores here in the U.S. except for their main store in New York I think.

  • J Cav the Great

Actually there Minor change within the antenna….i would wait until all variants have surfaced with detailed information on their modems and antennas, then evaluate which one will best fit U.S. bandwidths..

  • Abhi

    Pretty much…

  • nfs2010

Come on, Dude! They’ve been selling unlocked phones online for years. Also check out B&H and Newegg for better deals ;) Or just go ebay if you don’t care about US warranty.

  • Abhi

Yep bad luck TMO version is a different revision…

  • Abhi

Funnily enough the first iPhone was actually made by Linksys for Cisco it was bar phone from 1998. iOS is also the name for Cisco’s router OS. Steve Jobs had to negotiate to use both names right before the Apple phone released in 2007.

  • Couldn’t care less about the Z5 or Premium, was only interested in the Z5 Compact.

  • Well if you’re going to pay for a monthly service anyway (I’m assuming every cell phone owner needs one), why not save a few hundred bucks off the phone by signing a contract? I don’t get the whole buying off contract argument, unless you plan on using your phone strictly through wifi.

  • ROFLMAO! Canadian Xperia fans?! wtf are you smoking eh? I used to be the fucking only Canadian craperia fan and even I have switched to Samsung and Microsoft! And of course Pony not getting any US love is fucking classic. I can bet even in Canada only Bell will get it in November just to discontinue this overheating POS by February. ;D #Sony_bankrupt

  • Yeah! Sell it via the sony stores!…. errr… I mean Sony.ca store!…. uh… ok, whatever, fuck it.

  • iia3ezu

Americans, this is what happens when you let telcos hold your country ransom. I think this is a uniquely American thing that happens nowhere else in the world.

  • DanielGearSolid

You pay more in the long run

  • I don’t get it, just order from amazon or Expansys unlocked, or worst case scenario have kyoex.com unlock a Japanese version for you, as those often have best build quality.

  • Alvin

urghhh yeah… when bundled or with contract with those carriers all will be a joke.

they’ll turn a great phone into a pile of s*** with those bloatwares, startup logo, and everything.. don’t forget the slow software updates too

  • Alvin

i was hoping for z5v for those americans and canadians though.. i feel pity for sony fans out there:”(

If sony continues their history ot will probably launch on one canada carrier. I dont think people care if a phone is exclusive or not nowadays… sony isnt in a position to play the exclusive game and i dont see any benefit of doing so. As far as the US, i dont think we care. No one is camping out for the z4v on verizon and i dont think anyone knows its coming. Most ppl probably forgot about it It was announced in june and its now september lol. I think most sony fan holdouts have already decided to find a different phone brand. I took a risk getting the G4 but its a badass phone and i love it. I got tired of waiting on Sony to end their exclusive game in the US and make it hard to buy the phone unlocked.

  • TechGuyChris

That is so inaccurate do you even live in the US? They closed all their US stores so theres no place to play with their phones… why buy a phone if you cant play with it or even visually see it in person?? They need to take a look at their playstation and TV divisions strategy… their tvs are in all electronic stores with dedicated sections and reps immediately ready to talk about them and demonstrate…

  • hcm.

Well said Timel. I don’t get what is wrong with U.S… both carriers and people.

  • Benjamin Levy

Both T-Mobile and AT&T give you a discount if you provide your own phone, so in two years it can be cheaper to buy your own phone than it is to get it from the carrier.

  • TechGuyChris

I dont get whats wrong with Sony Mobile US… the playstation and tb division have their strategy down here and its working in the US. How do you expect peoplw in the US to buy a phone they cant play with or see visually in person and no marketing behind it..Did you know they closed all their sony stores here in the US too? So explain to me whats wrong with Sony Mobile… its not the US people.. its sony and bad fundamental busimess decisions they cant do… the z4v for verizon still has t been released yet..

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

Its the people, they prefer cheap plastic devices / on contract phones.

I never “played with” or visually saw my Z2 before I got it in my hands.

If visually seeing and playing with it was everything , people won’t line up in front of Apple stores on day one to buy iPhones.

  • TechGuyChris

I dont think Apple phones are cheap and plastic… Theres a couple things wrong with your logic… I”ll list whats wrong with your logic..

    1) Most US customers dont prefer cheap plastic… Apple marketed their first iPhone with heavy emphasis and had people going into AT&T stores to actually VISUALLY and PLAY with it. Today, the phone is on all carriers, and people know what they are getting when they get an iPhone due to their previous releases. Oh yeah, they also market and have the media promote their devices too..

    2) People line up on day 1 to get their phones on day one because they already know what they’re getting due to marketing, and previous devices they’ve succesfully showed. The same holds true for Samsung. Even LG realizes that.. Even Sony TV and Sony Playstation realize that…

    3) You generalized that ALL US people prefer on contract phones. That is so inaccurate. SOME but not ALL US people prefer on contract phones. It depends on their finances.. Similar to when you go to the bank to get an Auto Loan rather than buying it outright.. Its more expensive longer term, but the inital upfront cost is also expensive… I’d rather pay $780 long term than spend $700 up front. The price isnt that different.

I hope you can understand, but I dont think thats likely.

  • stolnheartdealr

Yeah sounds like you’re the one not getting the ‘memo’ Sony is in the process of closing their US online store for mobile devices and while there are typically ‘some’ avenue to purchase the phones outside of carrier distribution that availability existed in a time that sony was involved more than they will be during the time of z5 sales, so maybe newegg, b&h won’t have them and any ebay importer could have a US monopoly of sorts, small supply, high demand means no deals for consumers…. also noteworthy, it doesn’t seem there’s a “US” phone version, I only checked quickly but it doesn’t seem that the T-mobile 1700mhz band is supported by any version of the z5c, it’s the only one i’m interested in so the only one I checked. (not that I use TMO now but I like to keep my options open)

  • Don Reba

What about when the US banking system collapsed in 2008 and Canadian banks rated best in the world?

  • J Cav the Great

In 2008…I was already a broke, near home less, college student..I really could not give two fucks what the rest of the nation was goug thru.lol At least I still had Venice Beach!!!!

  • nfs2010

The change applies to their ‘whole’ store (not just phones) & retailers will keep selling all Sony products (why not phones as well). 1700MHz is being phased out. My E6553 (Z3+) perfectly works on both ATT & Tmobile.

  • stolnheartdealr

while 1700 may be (press release or article that backs this up?) it isn’t yet, also I don’t know any reliable source that will tell a consumer how active 1700/1900 is in their coverage area for T-Mobile.

The point I was making that the ‘workarounds’ that exist today may not be here for z5 sales tomorrow because Sony has decommissioned many of their US sales initiatives, absence of 1700 on any z5 being one of them.

heeeyyy.. there is a rumor for Xperia Z5 Ultra… http://goo.gl/dYj9Vi

  • The Z5 will never be launched in the US. The Economic Collapse will make it impossible for people to buy the thing. You watch.

  • Not if you don’t have the money

  • FanOfAFanboy

Actually if you do it right, the difference can be quite a bit. I bought my phone outright and switched to cricket. Not only do they have good coverage everywhere I have been but I now pay $55 per month and have 20gb of data. I saved about $50 per month compared to my contract phone. So you’re right, first year broke about even but if I keep my phone for even 18 months, I’ve saved $300 with loads more data I can use for hotspots. Im in the US and I think the problem is the ‘I need it now’ attitude. Rather than saving and doing something that will save considerable money in the long run, we use payment plans and contracts. Carriers are businesses and their goal is to make money.

  • TechGuyChris

that only applies if you are on a contract. AT&T next, T-Mobile jump and whatever Verizon calls there’s Is when you pay a monthly fee to pay off the price of the phone in installments. Say $29 extra per month. You pay that until you pay off the phone. Those are not contracts.. So you are saving if you use those plans. Besides after 18 months an android phone is usually outdated, no longer supported and laggy and slow. So I don’t see a need to spend $699 up front.. By the time your finished paying it off you’d be eager to buy a new one anyway.

  • FanOfAFanboy

When I switched to cricket, I had the option to go with AT&T Next. Numbers still were better for buying outright. Even with my company’s corporate agreement discount with AT&T, It would have been $110/month for a decent amount of data to allow for hotspotting my laptop occasionally. So crunching the numbers for total cost over 18 months:AT&T Next = $110*18 = $1980. Buying outright = $700 for the phone +$55*18 = $1690. So still saving $290 over that period. One other stipulation with the Next program if you’re doing, say the 18 month program, is that you don’t actually own the phone until 24 months. Yes, you can upgrade after 18 months but that requires you to trade your phone in as the phone cost is actually split into 24 installments. So not only do I save $290 over that period but I can keep that device. Whether I want to use it as a spare or a wi-fi only media device, or give it to a friend – I would be able to do that. Not trying to be combative at all just explaining my experience within the last year. In the end, there are quantitative benefits to buying outright. And I do hope that there is some way to get the Z5c in the US eventually. If not, it’ll be a tough call between the LG and Huawei Nexus devices and the Moto X Pure!

You are corect but you actually just inferred what I was explaining. Yes after 18 months you can trade in your phone, but you still aren’t finished paying it off yet. Hence the full 24 months before you own the phone. You factored your phone plan x 18 which I will refer to as X. In plan a, X was = 55. On plan b, X was = 110. Of course there would be a difference in savings but that is based on the carrier plan and not the cost of the phone itself.. So you confirmed that cricket is cheaper which is widely known.. Also, for data, its only beneficial to have a data plan that high if you use >= 35% of it. Otherwise, you overspend by a significant amount every month. You can do the math if you want.

My point is take a step back and look at the total cost of ownership over 18 months. I just ran the numbers on AT&Ts website. For an iPhone 6 with 64 gb storage (middle option) on the 18 month plan and 5 gb of data (which is not too hard to hit), it is still $102 a month total with the phone installment and data plan to own and operate that phone. So that is $1836 over the course of 18 months compared to my $1690 – $700 to own the phone and $55 per month to operate (and still have 20 gb if for some reason I absolutely needed it). Yes, the savings came from using cricket but thats the type of option you have when you own your own phone and its savings nonetheless – that’s what i meant by doing it right in my first comment. I have had no problems with data or coverage with cricket and have had to turn on my hotspot for others many times. And again, that phone is already mine so there is additional value in not having to trade in that asset. At the end of the day, total cost to me for the life of the phone is less and that’s all that matters when I check my bank account, regardless of where that savings came from.

Sony has through October 15th to announce a U.S. release date and then I’m selling the PS4 and HiRes headphones. I understand a delay due to global-release complications, and I understand contractual dealings with carriers, but to entirely keep U.S. buyers in the dark is not acceptable.
