Xperia Z5 family supports most manual camera settings (no RAW though)

Xperia Z5 Manual Camera SettingsThe new Sony Xperia Z5 series will support the same manual camera settings through the Camera2 API as the Xperia Z3+/Z4. This means that apart from RAW support, the Xperia Z5 will support manual camera settings for focus, white balance, ISO and shutter speed. So it’s good news that Sony has most settings open and maybe it will open up RAW too over time.

Xperia Z5 Manual Camera Settings

Thanks Basil!

• Joe Black

This is great. Would’ve been better to have RAW too, but I’m not that psyched about it as I am about the other features.

• ramuk

For the love of God Sony please bring RAW support. I’m sick of hearing people asking for it.

• Srijan Chawla

It’s a step ahead atleast, perhaps the RAW support is somewhere near in the future :)

PS. Check the Sony Z5 officially kicking top 100 smartphones asses here http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/legal/testresults/xperia-z5/

• Ambitious Man

:) Retail is not support the full manual mode.

• nfs2010

Lol. Then people will ask for 100 bundled RAW apps for free. And then they will whine about lag & storage. Can’t wait to see that :P

• Chaturanaga Manchanayake

It’s not useless. And manual camera app crashed after using it. It just shows that it’s capable but you can’t actually use it lol

• Any changes of this coming to older models? We never got Timeshift Video or 4K recording in Z1 series :(

• ramuk

What do you think of early Z5 camera sample? Especially the PA’s sample shot? They took all the image in 23 mpx. I’m impressed. With oversampled 8mpx Z5 camera is capable of even better low light photo right?

• dannybuoy

Haven’t Sony got awful RAW processing even on their top end A7 cameras? I’ve seen a lot of criticism recently.

• nfs2010

Z5 samples look great, loved that red & I have full faith in their 8mp mode. Noise is very well controlled in Z3+, should be better on Z5.

• kido

Sony just add raw to make everyone shut up please.

• Itsarapong Intoum

I care about manual shutter speed than the RAW support :P

• fluxx

Raw support is overrated. Most of the people I know that are shooting Raw on their DSLR are bad photographers who think their work gains something. But a bad picture unfortunately doesn’t care about Raw. There are of cause some Pros who are shooting Raw and know how to work with it, but I wonder if this people actually use their phones for this? Really, I don’t want to offend somebody, but get the right object, get the clipping right and get the moment right and you have a great picture whether or not shooting Raw. (The shutter speed of the Z5 ist MUCH more important than this!)

• joseph carmine nero

The dev should update the app

• kido

or sony should just put it in their manual camera interface like LG G4

• kido

At least all the other options are supported. What I would personally prefer for the camera is a robust manual mode that has control over most settings including shutter speed, iso etc, something like the lg g4 already has would be perfect for the z5’s.

• Alvin

Lets see the rage that will happen now

“WHERE’S THAT RAW YOU AIRHEAD SONY??!!!!”

• MarkG54321

No, there are idiots that think applying small amounts of compression to RAW files, like Sony does, is a bad thing. However the reality is, it’s impossible to spot, and it means the RAW files are much smaller, which means faster burst writes.

Sony right now are destroying Canon and Nikon cameras at the high and and the mirrorless mid range. Because of this, there is alot of Sony FUD going around.

• Matt

that is why ramuk says that.

the facts is people want raw, or at least clueless people here.

• Melfes Wired

i transported many sample photos in ifa, most of them do look ok

• adecvat

Claims and Test Results Xperia Z5 by Sony, lol.

• Khillo81

I guess it’s safe to say that if they haven’t done it by now, they’re not going to… Time to shop for a new phone I guess. Waiting until December to see how the Z5’s are gonna be priced. By then, my Z1 will be two years old.

• adecvat

Use xda

• fluxx

Yeah, I wanted to back ramuks answer! Cheers :)

• Srijan Chawla

Yeaah, i would love to see some 3rd party results more
Manufactures are extremely biased with their devices :P

• xAntifreeZe

“Sony will consider RAW in future ‘if there is popular demand’ ” seems like the demand isn’t high enough

• Constantine

Where can I get Z5 launcher?

• Yasir Fawad

Camera 2 api is now supported. U can use any third party App from play store for RAW files.

i am really excited about the new camera software on the Z5

• DBS

When the Z3+ came out a similar article to this was posted based on the same “evidence”. The truth is, in the end, the Z3+ did NOT support more manual controls than the other Zeds.

So I’m prepared to bet that the Z5 will also not support manual focus and shutter speed controls. Just like it keeps not supporting RAW

• laci_csk

I take pictures only in Auto mode, for me no need RAW option.

• hmmm

sony, how long do we have to wait for the RAW option??? come on,come on,come ooooooonnnn!!!

I observed that downscaling the pics to 16mp, noise goes away!
BTW i only downscaled it using simple Microsoft Office picture manager!

• ludimilojko

And what shutter speed would you use, for example, at a mildly cloudy afternoon? What ISO would you use with that shutter speed?

• nfs2010

So Z5 supports different mpx in Auto mode? If so,

1. 8mp for all night, indoor, & most day shots
2. 16 mp for details heavy day shots
3. 23 mp when it’s absolutely needed (very rarely)

• Billy de Fretes

just buy DSLR Camera if you want raw picture…
smartphone camera main purpose is to capture as fast as possible all image you want and share it quickly without editing the picture.
and yet i still didn’t get what the hell you guys need RAW??
it’s like “hey I’ve got your picture, let me open it in lightroom / photoshop first and export it as jpeg so you can upload to social media”

• Billy de Fretes
• demand_greet?

Xperia C3 users check xperifirm new update is available it might be the 5.1. Downloading right ftf. Come on we’ll give it a try.

• Confruggy

I dont think Raw is necessary, because the quality of the picture woulndt be really better. I have a DSLR and shoot pictures in Raw, because its more useful for post processing, but on a smartphone I just want to shoot good pictures in auto mode without the need of post processing.

• Kevin

I just got an email from Sony saying my Xperia Z1 has a new update saying this exactly:There is a software update (v. 14.5.A.0.270) available for your device. Perform a software update and enjoy new features, better performance, speed and bug fixes. You can update the software today using your computer or wait until it’s available directly in your device (often within a couple of days). It’s easy and no backup is needed.

Update your device using a computer
Download and install the software update using a computer application and connect the device to your computer using a USB cable.

I haven’t updated it because I don’t have PC right now. But it might just be 5.1.1 since I already have 5.0, also I’m in Mexico so maybe others won’t have it. :)

Most people care about the great processing image in auto mode more than the RAW support

Sooner or Later Sony will bring RAW support

Sony’s marketing team needs to wake up now more than ever. iPhone 6ass, sorry 6s is a dud. Samsung’s grip has loosened on the premium android market. The only player in a position to move in is Sony but we know that they will focus on Europe only, the dying continent. Sony has some good things going but the end-to-end execution is failing them. Who can imagine running a business by neglecting Americas?

• Timel

Most people want a great auto mode, most people never want to waste their time with manual mode on their smartphone

I think mobile device like smartphone really deserves the effective auto mode and Samsung understands this point, Samsung knows what end users want and then they make the fastest smartphone camera on the market right now(I heard that S6 camera is on standby all the time) Samsung also make the greatest post-processing image in S6 camera which I want Sony to do the same!

World best Smartphone Camera !!! Its not ever true ! Best Camera in this time is LG G4 !!! And now ,no waterproof Sony goodbye and R.I.P…!!! I think Sony does not want their smartphones to sell well! Or do not compare their smartphones with the competitors! A new fresh design for the Sony UI must be found, a fucking optical image stabilizer has at least Z3 + a must! An aperture with F1.8 also to become the best, as Sony claims, while it is only an empty word without a little fact! As also 4GB of RAM and a USB Type C! Then you could say Sony tried everything to get back to get to the top! But see there is simply no positive change, each year making the same shit and hope that something changes into positive! Without itself something new to try!

• jakobd.

I am twenty years loyal Sony customer, am now really disappointed with your smartphone! No Water resistance? Allegations do not agree with the facts, the world’s best camera? Comparing Your themselves their smartphones with the competitors (LG G4, Samsung S6, iphone 6? Her no longer, or how should we understand customers more importantly the fans Want your smartphone itself?

• Svnjay

We want raw because Sony’s post processing is crap.

• kido

depends what i want to do. I would love to have control over shutter speed when it comes to shooting water rapids for example, for that slow shutter effect if you know what I mean :p

• David Lettinga

Dafuq you talking about

• I don’t want to root.

• ludimilojko

If you dial in a slow shutter speed in daylight, you will get an overexposed image. You can’t use slow shutter speed with f/2 when there’s enough light. You have to compensate with closing the aperture, but that’s impossible, cos the aperture on every phone camera is fixed. Lowering the ISO to 7 is also impossible.
No offense, but It’ obvious that you don’t know how exposure works. Not just you, most of them who’s crying for RAW or manual shutter speed, wouldn’t know how to get a proper exposure.

• vov

what about z3? Do we get this camera app?

Samsung get this point and know what most people really want that why Samsung make the best image processing in S6 camera, furthermore S6 camera is the fastest camera in the market right now (I heard that the S6 camera is on standby all the time ) and most people really love it.

Korea manufacturers like Samsung and LG really did the very great smartphone camera and Sony must do the same

• Timel

When Xperia owners see other people who own Samsung phones and LG phones and those people can use their phones shoot pictures in Raw but Xperia owners can’t.. Ew! It’s not good for Sony image at all.

So if competitors bring RAW support to their flagship phones then Sony must do as well.

• kido

dude i know how this things work, just shut up ok, no one is going to crank up high iso during daylight hours with slow shutter speed dummy. Too bad the xperia z5 doesn’t have ois thats why it automatically cranks up high iso levels during low light to compensate for faster shutter speeds to avoid camera shake.

• ludimilojko

Dude, you can’t use long shutter speed with f/2 during the day, not even with the lowest ISO! Do you understand that?
Here’s how a photo looks at f/2, 1/25 sec and ISO100, during the day. Imagine the exposure at 1 sec. It will be pure white.

• kido

dude drop the EV stop acting stupid, and why do u want to take a slow shutter speed of a tree or whatever is in the picture in the first place?

• ludimilojko

Did you check his other photos too? Broad daylight, ISO50, f/1.8, 1/2000 sec, cloudy day, ISO 50 f/1.8, 1/200 sec … Draw your own conclusion.

• kido

I wasn’t referring to the other photos dude, I was making an example of a slow shutter shot in broad daylight like the photo above.

Actually the fact that you think that’s what RAW is for probably shows what a narrow minded person you are. Having RAW doesn’t take anything away from the phone in fact it adds more value to people who shoot with it. Why get offended if someone gets more out of the camera?

• fluxx

That’s a good point ;-) During the presentation of the Z5 they mentioned that they are (finally) working together with the Alpha team, so I have high expectations in the new Auto mode.

• fluxx

Huuuu. Narrow minded, I’m upset :D

Sometimes I shoot RAW on DSLR, but on mobile I prefer if they finally get the auto mode right.

• Sunny all day

BINGO!

Buy an DSLR or an FF mirrorless, RAW WILL do maybe a 20% gain over a DSLR on raw as far as post processing. Basically on a small mobile setup it’s useless.

• Sunny all day

Lets pray…

• MartDEN

Well. Sony xperia z3 is a small update, and i was VERYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY dissapoinrted that you guys did not give us camera api 2, while after you gave z3+ manual options. I bought your product, so do us a favor giving us that damn camera api2 to z3 too.

• MartDEN

I got sony xperia z3 as Christmas X.X and main reason was camera

• Miffy Wiffy

I want raw because Sony’s processing sucks.

• RiTCHiE

Please sony give us RAW support so i can edit it with adobe lightroom!!!

• xxx

Alpha team makes the crappy jpeg engine on mirrorless?

• xxx

8 bit to 14 bit is 6 stops in shadows recovery. If you dont know how to use a raw file you will end up with worse picture, especialy if your camera/phone fixing vignetting/distortion/chromatic-aberrations and many more you have to do it manually in photoshop/lightroom. A photographer who respects his self shoots raw at least for his important work. Who wants to do important work on a smartphone, and why you need raw on a smartphone is another story.

• psychok9

Mediocre auto software support + no RAW support = they are voluntarily impeding his fotocamera results.

• psychok9

I think it will be useful for avoid Sony crap postprocessing. But Sony likes impeding his fotocamera… maybe for don’t eat compact camera market.

• psychok9

Great! Are you sure?
It will be great a deep review.

• Max Power

But… has someone used manual camera already on this phone?? in htcmania people say despite in teory it should go well it actually blocks when using ISO etc…
I would like to know it before buying the phone thank you guys

• Jason Zheng

have u update marshmallow of Z3. Maybe it support camera api 2 now. Just update and test it with manual camera test on google play. After these, download manual camera form same company, maybe you can control the shutter speed now.

• RiTCHiE

Please ADD RAW!!!!!

• christopherjacques

More than or less than? You left out a very important word.

• christopherjacques

Ah, the mob has spoken. “I don’t see a good reason, so there mustn’t be one.”

I use a DSLR for RAW, a smaller snapshot camera for RAW, and would love that my 23 MP camera (regardless that’s it’s inside a phone) also take RAW.

RAW was invented for a reason. That reason does not change depending on the device.

RAW is useful for photographers, and as any level photographer knows- “The best camera is the one you have with you”.

• RiTCHiE

ill bet they will some day because them camera phones getting better each day.
