Evolution of the Xperia Z series in one picture

by XB on 18th September 2015

in Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3 series, Xperia Z4 and Z3+ series, Xperia Z5 series

Xperia Z FamilySony Mobile has carefully finessed the Xperia Z series range through each iteration of the handset. That much can be seen when looking at the side profiles of the main Xperia Z flagship family as seen below.

The original Xperia Z had a flat edge, but you can see with the Xperia Z1 and Z2 that Sony was moving to a curved edge before moving to a fully curved side with the Xperia Z3 onwards. Then there is the size and placement of the volume buttons that with the Xperia Z5 has moved to its lowest position to accommodate the fingerprint sensor.

Corner caps for shock protection were introduced with the Xperia Z3 (matte for the Z3 and shiny caps with the Z4/Z3+). The signature power button has almost been the main design constant through all Xperia Z iterations. Even though the button doesn’t explicitly exist with the Xperia Z5, the icon is still used on the fingerprint sensor power button.

It’s great seeing these Xperia Z handsets side-by-side and we’re intrigued where Sony will go next.

Thanks Naru!

  • Kristo

I’ll be happy to jump from Z to Z5 soon!

  • z1 is best

  • Bur

Evolution at it’s finest. Gonna jump to the z5 from z3c if it has good reviews. Z3c is a bit too small for me:(

  • Hassandroid

Then why didn’t you buy the bigger Z3?

  • Berkay Tunal?

Yeah TFT screen is amazing that colours are like so real

  • Nander

    Can’t wait for Z5P release

  • Konstantin Ivanov

    Z2 Power Button <3

  • AtomicGadget

  • Bur

I came from the z2( got my money refunded after waterdamage, niceguy sony), z3c looked great and thought I’ll try a small flagship. It is great, but I sometimes miss watching YouTube and typing on a bigger phone :)

  • naru

I was wondering when XB was going to post this! I know it has seemed to be a slow design process, but I think Sony have done a great job on improving and refining each iteration. It has also only been around 2 years since the orginal Z phone, it really is sony’s attempt to catch up with other company’s. Remember the sony-erricson split? Yeah its taken them a long time to re-organize sony mobile, but its good to see they are finally gaining traction in the market. I’ve visited XB Since the launch of the original Z phone and just want to say thank you to the team behind XperiaBlog and all its supporters. Also XB, you still have those photos I sent you!

  • Svnjay

  • akzidenz

more comparisons like other view angles, especially the speaker alignment would be good

  • Anybody noticed the z2 kinda stands out (outward-look-wise)? That iteration of the Z line series was a beast!

  • Vuyo Ncube

Hopefully, the next Z is shorter with a bigger screen. IMO, Sony’s woes would have alleviated a bit better if the Z3 came with an SD805 and larger battery. Such a phone would have held up throughout 2015 against crappy SD810/SD808 phones.

Xperia z2 looks good there, but in colours other than blacks, I prefer it on z3, z3+, and wspecially the goddess z5 series

  • Alvin

Now who said they don’t change their design??

  • Alvin

Viewing angle is good, saturation is amazing. I should’ve buy that thing because it’s so gorgeous on display

  • Svnjay

    Awesome! :)

  • Doubleyoupee

    Xperia ZL masterrace!

  • LeopardSurd

The sides from Z1 and Z2 are the most beautiful and look premium. The sides from Z3 have nothing scpecial except the button. And now with Z5 is the button bye-bye…Unfortunately.

  • TRZK

    I hope you’re being sarcastic.

  • TRZK

    That’s not true. Never was.

    Z2 looks awesome though!

I love to see significant design change for the next Xperia like this -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdPFAvGCJnc inspired by the new bravia tv

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Z3 n z3+ look like having a same thickness even on paper showed z3+ had 6.9mm over roll i like seeing xperia z series evolution.

  • Ajmal

Even though I’m gonna buy a z5p soon, I admit the fact that the original z is the sexiest. Rest follows…

  • Ajmal

Same here bro, z to z5p

  • Ajmal

I’ve used both z and Z1. If you had used, you would understand how different the displays are

  • Ajmal

    Fingers crossed

  • Ajmal

Would you mind if I told you the power button is the best on original z?

  • Lucas Marotta

Wow!!!!! Thought I was the only one that will jump from Z to Z5.

  • iia3ezu

I would love to see the Xperia Arc design come back. Thinner bezels and without the physical buttons at the bottom. Natural curves. That was a sexy phone when it was first released.

  • jeff

oh look!…my Xperia Z2 is so Beautiful:)

  • nfs2010

Come on, XB! You forgot the coolest one – Xperia ZL!

  • Svnjay

How hot does your Z3+ get?

I wanted to get the Z3+ but everyone says that it’s constantly warm or hot.

  • mike

both power and volume buttons are in the wrong places, not ergonomic, many many years, never fix.

  • nfs2010

It runs 2/3C higher than Z2 – I totally love it for the performance. Which one do you have now? You don’t like the Z5 (& its new camera sensor) ?

  • So far, the Z5 is the best looking one since the original Z. A shame they got rid of the unique Power button. But having a fingerprint reader is worth it.

The only downside, there is still no potential replacement for my Z Ultra in sight :(

  • Svnjay

I don’t have a phone at the moment. I knew that my phone was going to fail on me but I was holding out till the Z5 Premium. I may just get the Moto X Pure because Sony takes ages to release their phones and all reviewers, everyone on XDA and the Amazon Z3+ buyers are complaining about heat.

  • mukul verma

Its heating issue has been fixed through new fimware, which was released recently..many people are saying the phone doesn’t get hot as before.

  • Svnjay
  • nfs2010

Well, all Zs run a bit warm due to glass builds. Z3+ is not as hot as people make it out to be – after three fw updates. But sill at this point Z5 is a better choice IMO. You could get the regular Z5 if you don’t wanna wait for Z5P. It should be out in 2/3 weeks. But yeah, Moto XP is cool too.

  • nfs2010

LOL – if you read the 3rd post on the souce XDA site (which was me :p), you’ll know the fix pretty much gets rid of throttling. Even without this fix, you could live with it just fine. You won’t find an octa core phone that’s throttle free.

  • Sadman Khan

    Going for Z5 :’)

  • clemmgx

the extra ring around the power button adds a nice touch. It looks so empty without it (Z3 and Z3+)

  • SoftbankSucks

not for me and it’s subjective… fix not necessarily needed.

  • Dean Newell

Yeah it does, the silver/purple paintjob on the frame is very different to the all black of the others. I love my Z2 :)

  • basheer

which region? do you already updated ? what is the changes

  • Winter Soldier

    is this real.
but there is no any update shows in Xperiafirm

  • Azurpha

That looks interesting but uncomfortable to hold.

  • Azurpha

buuut, the coating on the frame comes off, well at least on my tab z.

  • Martin Fodor

It is real. I also updated my Xperia Z2 yesterday. It is Nordic Region.

  • Alex Norris

First place goes to Xperia Z .Then Z1, Z2, Z5. Z3 and Z3+ are the worst

  • Alexx

    Z is so sexy

  • Alvin

Can’t you see that was sarcasm? :)

  • Schadenfreude

You forgot to include Z Ultra. It still has the thinnest profile asking z-series

  • Bowito Cuna

I’ll upgrade from Z to Z3 next year, then to Z5P in 2017.

  • Amir

Z ultra is not a flagship but a mini tablet with phone capabilities.

  • Arda Akca

They are talking about Z5 Ultra in March 2016

  • Matt

xperias get cleaner and cleaner , kinda like it.

hope they stay with LCD and perfecting it overtime (and 1080p). no AMOLED please.
AMOLED is better suited for smartwatch :)

  • wumps13

still the old user interface can they just keep the stock android they will save money and have a modern interface !!!!

  • David Hvatov

    Evolution stopped on Z2 (design).

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

actually sony will using OLED tech because Japan Display Inc will mass produce in 2017 around Q3 or Q4. JDI already make OLED screen but they still in test because OLED got many issue and higher cost to produce.

maybe JDI want to fix all problem with OLED because SONY already know how to make OLED screen

(SONY did help samsung to make OLED back in 2004-2011 until SONY switch team with new establish JDI)

but all source said JDI only aim at tablet/laptop and wearable. i dunno whether SONY will use or not

  • Tochi Nwodu

The original z has the perfect power button

    I see z2 having a new update
I wonder the xperia z3 department why they wouldn’t fix the USSD and ringtone bug..

  • Hideg Jen? Péter

Why not for Z6? Because Snapdragon 820 will come out in 2016.
Includes for S820: “Support quick charge 3.0, 40% Graphics and battery life Improvement than S810” You wait to till see :3 (Anyway i still forgot to check specs improved)

Question: What is gonna happen to Z4v? If Sony has already gone through a mass production of Z4v and Verizon won’t sell it, that could be a huge loss (waste of cost) for Sony. Verizon would choose Z5P over Z4v??

  • Damien

I’d be impressed with a new UI design, the phone design itselfs actually appeals me and in my opinion, Sony has the best UI design right after Google, but a New UI design would totally cheer up things!

  • Damien

I think he meant in design failures?

  • Damien

    Waiting for New UI design

  • Damien

    Z6 ftw

  • iia3ezu

Xperia Z5 still overheats. So much for Snapdragon 810 v2.1 solving heat issues.

Pros: waterproof, good camera, microSD card slot, great fingerprint scanner

Cons: doesn’t live up to battery expectations, no wireless charging, not the snappiest, weak camera flash, can get quite warm

The Guardian is quite a fair and reputable site as far as tech reviews are concerned.

Really hope for improvement in the Xperia Z6, or whatever Sony decides to release at MWC 2016.

Then I guess we’ll all be a larger family. I’m moving from Z to Z5p as soon as it hits my market!! :) And I have to tell you… I’m gonna miss the original Z. Such a nice device, with loads of support, mods and ports!! Just the best, almost 3 year old, device I’ve ever had!!

  • DBS

All the phones on the market use the Snapdragon 810 v2.1. The original SD810 never even passed OEM’s testing. So that’s not surprising.

At any rate, everyone should avoid the SD810. Not only because it’s a nightmare of a SoC but because the SD820 will bring a lot more considerable benefits than the SD810 ever brought. I’d say it’s wiser to wait on the Z6/Z7 series.

  • Geese Howard

    Me too :)

I will wait for the next Xperia z device with snapdragon 820 instead ;D my Xperia z runs just fine for now

  • chunkybeats

Yeah im thinking of jumping from Z to Z5 next year!!

  • jag

I miss my Z! Such a beautiful phone.

  • Khillo81

Well, if you had bothered to read the whole review (or maybe you did but it didn’t suit you to mention it), the reviewer states that the phone tends to get warm (during downloads mostly but not during graphic intensive games) but does not overheat (i.e. he had no issues with using the phone). My Z1 also gets warm when I use it for any period of time. All phones do (the issue is if you can feel it as much. Plastic does not conduct heat as well as metal for example). He goes on to say that there doesn’t seem to be any noticeable throttling when the phone heats. His tone was actually positive during the whole piece saying that the phone may be Sony’s best to date but possibly not enough to stand out. So, highlighting the ‘can get quite warm’ to illustrate your point on overheating issues is a feeble attempt on your part. And although I like the Guardian overall for their news coverage, they are not as fair when it comes to tech gadgets.

  • laci_csk

Heating is one thing, and overheating is another, dont forget this.

  • Hexsense

i like the way it is right now (at least before z5).
So easy to press with left hand finger or right hand thumb (for right hand thumb, remember you don’t have to press it with your end tips of your thumb the inside knuckle of your thumb work too).

Still have it here and still using it but not a lot given the fast that it is stuck on a old Android version and without any memory left (300 Mb is definitively not enough !)

  • Shubham Mutreja

You can use Link2SD after rooting it and then create a partition on sd card.
Tada you have increased your internal memory!
(Did same with my Xperia Mini Pro. Now i have 3Gbs of Int memory)

  • Mac

I just need to ask you this. If the main reason you want to upgrade is for the s820 then how can you still live with the s4pro? If the Xperia Z still is good enough, why even bother having the latest next time? Just curious man :-)

  • Emil Oskarsson

Well I want a phone with a better camera and better battery life hehe :) and it’s time to get a new one since I only stick with a phone 2-3 years :)

  • The original Xperia Z is still Love <3

  • GregLu

Thanks but I do know the existence of Link2SD and some other apps but it’s a pain in the ass for a daily use and sometime it crash. Anyway, I’d rather prefer having the Z3c and my G3 and G4 instead of the Ray that is used now for his camera when I drive as a Dashcam :)

  • Emil Oskarsson

Hmm sounds strange because my z has just gotten faster and faster for every new Android it got :p 5.0.2 is awesome :)

  • Philip Trisnadi

I agree, my z also got faster and faster in every android update. Android 5.1.1 is super awesome :D

  • Mac

Weird, do you consider yourself a heavy user?

  • Mac

Doesn’t the homescreen redraw like all the time?

  • Philip Trisnadi

I don’t experience that, maybe you got too many apps working in background?

  • Mac

Well, I just made a clean install like a month ago or so. Can’t be that.

  • Emil Oskarsson

I do. But I do a factory reset every now and then and clean ART cache atheist once a month :)

  • Emil Oskarsson

I’m still waiting for Android 5.1.1 for existenz Y rom so I’m just on 5.0.2 hehe :)

  • Mac

Aight, but how can you do it so often? I haven’t found an easy way getting everything back ads before after a clean install. Only a few apps comes back after a restore. The others I have to download manually as I find them again. Very time consuming and frustrating.

  • Emil Oskarsson

I use the app Helium from clockworkmod to backup my apps data, it can be used by rooted and non rooted users. And the reason why I do a factory reset every now and then is that I change rom pretty often (using stock based one ofc)

  • mike

  • Hexsense

Well i’m surrounded with so many iphone 5s, 6 and 6+ and i’m sure that i played with all of them when they just bought.
Personally I feel really annoyed with how iphone’s home button work. And i prefer power button and sound settings of xperia more. It just right for my left hand.

I know that you prefer the way iphone 6 is, but please respect others that you it different than you and found them ergonomically good. (at least before z5)

like if you find z3 most attractive among them
