Sony UCH20 USB Charger bundled with the Xperia Z5 family

in Accessories, Xperia Z5 series

Sony USB Charger UCH20_1Up until now Sony Mobile has included the EP880 USB charger with its flagship Xperia smartphones. That will change with the Sony Xperia Z5 series, where it will be bundling a new charger called the “USB Charger UCH20”. The UCH20 charger delivers an output of 5 V/1500 mA, same as the EP880.

When Sony first announced the Xperia Z5 series back at IFA 2015, it initially tagged this accessory as a ‘Quick Charger’, but this has not been Qualcomm certified from what we can see. The Sony Quick Charger UCH10, which is Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 certified, delivers an output of 5 V/1800 mA. We’re not sure how the UCH20 differs from the EP880, but from the face of it, there doesn’t seem to be a lot that has changed.

    FAIL

  • “In line with recent announcements, Sony would like to point out that the UCH20 charger has in fact only been tested in lab conditions, and thus the general public should not put this into their own power sockets as to do so could invalidate the warranty.”

  • Marinko Agic

    10 min.charging for 5.5 hour use!

  • Lio

i have a related question: since the USB port is now open, is it still safe to put it underwater, say in a swimming pool? i understand that sony has revised their waterproof wording to avoid instances of warranty replacements, but in the context of the z5 being a waterproof phone, should it still technically handle short dips underwater and take underwater shots?

  • Peter

Sony with the price I’m paying for the Z5P I sure hope there’s a quick charger in the box. And trow in the MDR-NC750 while your at it.

  • Peter

Technically it should work, but you won’t get a warranty repair if it doesn’t.

What is going to happen to Z4v? If Sony has already gone through a mass production of Z4v and Verizon won’t sell it, that could be a huge loss(waste of production cost) for Sony. Does anyone know about it?

  • nfs2010

Well, Sony’s not going to put Z4V in production without a full commitment from Verizon. In the worst case, Sony will still lose their R&D investment though. But yes, Verizon & Sony need to get their sh*t together & tell us what’s going on with Z4V.

  • jamie evans

ok…I hope Z4v and Z5 Premium both will hit the Verizon stores at the same time. Z5P is the star attraction now, but Z4v is great too with QHD and wireless-charging

  • nfs2010

Yep! I always envied that wireless charging they put in Z3V last year. If they could put FPS & the new camera sensor on top of that QHD, WC & call it Z5V, it’d be one heck of a phone

  • Islis

UCH20 is just a standard quick charger and more likely just an update to replace EP880… The UCH10 is QC2.0 and support 5V/1800mA, 9V/1700mA and 12V/1275mA.

  • Svnjay

Chargers were made to be put in power sockets.

Smartphones weren’t made to be put in water but Sony tries to make them water resistant anyway.

  • raju

    It’s support for z1?

Since it is still IP68 certified, it is safe to put it underwater. Although you mustn’t charge it unless the USB port is completely dry.

  • deekbee

And possibly don’t try charging it under water.

It’s probably a nightmare to work with Verizon. The Z3v is still on KitKat apparently Sony sent the Lollipop firmware to Verizon a while back but it’s still not out. Guessing they are still working on getting in the bloat lol. The TMO version fortunately is pretty clean outside and in.

Thanks for the laugh ! :D

It’s IP certified, yes. But Sony will invalidate your warranty if you put water inside the device, because they use crappy IP certification I guess.

I bought this because it’s smaller than the previous one and therefore more travel bag friendly. And I’d also read the initial reports that it was the same specs just smaller than the UCH 10. It’s not in actuality. It’s not even powerful enough to charge my z4 tablet. My tablet displays a warning that it’s losing power and not gaining it. I also don’t know if it charges my z3+ quicker than the larger UCH 10. I’ll get back to you on that. I can confirm that it did charge it fully however. It won’t charge my Smartwatch 3 which I thought strange as all my previous usb chargers do. All in all this charger is turning out to be of limited use for me and I will be taking the one larger UCH 10 with me when travelling as I can trust it to work with all my devices.

  • Charman Champs

which is the better for z5 ?

  • Harry

But when you advertise it to be ip68 and ip65 water and dust resistant, then you’d expect it to actually be that. These lines of smartphones were made to be put in water, among other things.

  • Svnjay

    Yes, I guess so.
