New update (23.4.A.1.236) now live for Xperia Z2/Z3 series on Vodafone in Europe

Xperia Z2Sony Mobile has released a new firmware update in the form of build number 23.4.A.1.236 that is rolling for the Xperia Z2 and Z3 series. This compares to the current version of 23.4.A.1.232. We cannot confirm right now whether the update fully patches the Stagefright exploit (in particular CVE-2015-6602).

The update is only live for the Vodafone network in select European countries. It has been released for the Xperia Z3 (D6603), Xperia Z3 Compact (D5803), Xperia Z2 (D6503) and Xperia Z2 Tablet (SGP521). If you have downloaded the update, let us know your thoughts below.

Update: Looks like the Stagefright exploit remains.

Thanks 3tman and System!

I have a z3 which was carrier locked by Vodafone and now I’ve unlocked it and using another carrier.. Is my phone still dependable on Vodafone for updates or i’ll get updates along unlocked models.. Can anyone clarify?

  • Samuel

It doesn’t patch CVE-2015-6602. What a waste of resources!

You’ll get update based on your running firmware (which is still Vf – I think). It doesn’t have anything to with sim lock. You could speed up updates by flashing a generic fw. But be careful with that as some carrier phones can get bricked that way. Check out XDA to see if people are flashing Vf phones.

When IS Sony going to fix the Stagefright bug?

I’ve read on the Xperia forum that even though the app detects it as vulnerable they still implemented measures so that it wouldn’t work anyway.

If your phone has the Vodafone branded software, then you’ll only get updates when the Vodafone specific firmware is updated. You can, however, flash a generic, unbranded firmware for your handset. Updates roll per region, with some regions getting them later than others, or sometimes even not at all. If you’re interested in learning, head over to the XDA Developers Forums –>
You can use a tool called XperiFirm to download a new firmware, and use Flashtool (by Androxyde) to decrypt, and flash it.
My last bit of advice, is read, read, and read again before doing.
