Sony Corporation has today confirmed plans to acquire Toshiba’s 300mm wafer fabrication facilities (located at its Oita Operations), which manufactures CMOS image sensors and memory controllers. The move means Toshiba will exit from the CMOS image sensor business altogether.
Once the transfer of the facility is complete, Sony will operate the site as a production facility of Sony Semiconductor Corporation, with a main focus to manufacture CMOS image sensors. It is expected that all of Toshiba’s 1,100 staff including engineering and design will transfer to Sony.
Sony is a global leader when it comes to CMOS image sensors and its smartphone products are found in some of the most popular products on the market today. The market continues to grow and the acquisition will enable Sony to increase its production capabilities. Sony and Toshiba aim to complete the transfer by the end of 31 March 2016, subject to regulatory approvals.
