Sony CMOSSony announced earlier today that it has signed definitive agreement to acquire Toshiba’s CMOS image sensor business for a purchase price of 19 billion yen ($154 million). Sony is acquiring Toshiba’s 300mm wafer fabrication facilities (located at its Oita Operations), which manufactures CMOS image sensors and memory controllers.

Sony looks to complete the transfer of the facilities by the end of 31 March 2016, subject to the usual regulatory approvals. Sony will look to transfer Toshiba’s 1,100 employees working in CMOS image sensor engineering and design on completion. This move will further enhance Sony’s position as one of the leading suppliers of CMOS image sensors globally for a wide range of devices including smartphones.

Thanks mrninko!

Sony makes the best hardware in the world but fails at the software.. There’s been 5 generation of Z and the software is still not that great.. As a Sony fan I can only hope that they’ll fix it with the z6 line up!

  • best

    What’s wrong with the software?

  • Omarion07

Well I have a z5 and superior auto mode is not superior at all.. Maybe if you go to manual and calibrate the settings you might achieve great photos.. But I’m a ‘point and shoot’ guy and not a professional photographer to be messing with manual mode.. I also have a S6 edge and it’s auto mode is better than z5.. Better colour representation, better low light performance, more details, etc…

  • Joseph Kevin Yap

whatever you and the rest say, DxOMark a professional evaluator of camera quality both for photo and VIDEO performance, has crowned Z5 as the “world’s best camera.” Strategy Analytics agreed too. Respect that. End of Discussion.

  • Svnjay

    Go get ’em, Sony!

  • Omarion07

Well exactly they’re professionals so it’s most likely that they calibrated the manual settings to achieve the best possible photo.. I compared pics taken by both z5 and S6 edge and compared them to real life scenery.. Photos from the s6 edge had better colour representation and more details!

  • Alvin

Yeah, the inferior auto isn’t superior at all..

  • Hieu Nguyen

Hopefully Xperia camera performance will be on par with high end Lumia phones, most of which use Toshiba sensors.

  • Kunal Shukla

great news! now they just need to acquire a good software company for their smartphones and voila

  • Luis alexander rosas velasquez

DxOMark says that Z2 have better camera than iPhone 5S..

  • Vuyo Ncube

Not sure if this purchase will benefit the mobile division anytime soon. Unless Xperias were given priority access on new sensors of course. The sensor business makes a gazillion new unique sensors for Samsung, LG. Apple, Xiaomi etc. everyday but Sony Mobile gets very few every 2 years.

  • H-R-K

Sony should invest more in display & chips.

  • Matt

Nope they are most certainly first.

Why z5 series got stellar score? Because dxo mark know what is a phone camera is. Nd they expected it to be that way, they manage the expectation.

  • Nidou Xperia™

    Sony, O who kills’em all!

    Sony FTW

  • I_can_wait_4ever

So where are the curve sensor that sony is making?
BTW help me decide, sonyRX10ii or wait for the successor of sony a6000?

  • iia3ezu

We’ll see how much the photography on the Xperia Z6 has improved through this acquisition.

  • iia3ezu

Why discuss non-Xperia camera products on this site? Get a Canon, Nikon or Olympus.

  • iia3ezu

That’s more due to the Carl Zeiss optics on the Lumia phones. If your lens is crap or mediocre it hardly matters what your sensor is.

And I would never wish a Windows phone on my worst enemy.

  • iia3ezu

I trust my eyes. Benchmarks mean jack shit. Respect that. End of discussion. Z5 photography is underwhelming.

  • Stephen Raharja

Well, if you have more money or really into photography, get the A6000 successor, because it would be much more flexible as you can change lenses + the sensor is larger. Get RX10II if you just want the zoom lense.

  • James Bond

They are investing in JDI with their tech and money

    sony’s new smartphones

  • EQ

Great news and they can continue to innovate and have first class high-end camera modules on their own phones while the rest like Samsung only has access to the middle-end camera modules. The on-the-go photographers choice, Xperia flagship mobiles!

  • EQ

The Z1+ lineup has way better camera than the Iphone 6s Plus and all previous Iphones. Especially since they uppgraded the algorithms for the post-processing with updates over time so they would score even higher now on DxOMark would they redo testing the Z1+ lineup. So you have no point.

  • EQ

It’s becouse the sensors used in their own phones are superior to the medium-end ones they make for others like Samsung, LG and so on.

  • Maxx Tan

sony should just in more in their camera software. even till now z5 camera still noob

  • Timel

LoL I pity the way Sony fans lie themselves

  • deekbee

DxOMark has been discredited for a long time before the Z5 “winning” the top place. Image quality on my Z5C is good, but it doesn’t deserve top place on any chart.

The sensor is capable of considerably more than is allowed by Sonys relatively lousy post processing (which is also rather slow).

  • deekbee

This acquisition won’t make a blind bit of difference to Sonys mobile cameras as long as they continue to use the same image processing. The hardware is stellar. The software isn’t.

  • Luis alexander rosas velasquez

Hahahahaha Sure kid,I love my Z2,but a iPhone 5 is better on camera.

  • EQ

Nope you are wrong unless “better” for you means overexposure, oversaturation and noisy low light photos. I do own both from work, an Iphone 5s and 6s Plus and the Z1 utterly destroys them in photo quality and natural representation of white balance, colors and detail aswell as having far less noise in low light. The worse the lighting the more the Z1 destroys the Iphones. Better luck next time though once you get new glasses and learn to spick better english!

Hoping sony will extend their software dept and making enhanced for their current available software for their smartphone device. Iam using s6 edge preveously and jumping back to sony z5 personally I felt like someting were missing compare what s6 edge had offer. Overall sony making great product but the software and feutures need to involve.

search manila shaker philippines on youtube. They did camera comparisons among flagship smartphones. Z5 was clearly the best by a HUGE margin. SEE FOR YOURSELF!!!
