What new tech would you like to see in a 2016 Xperia device?

Sony Make BelieveThe start of a new year always brings promise and excitement about what may be in store for us in the months ahead. CES, one of the largest technology tradeshows, takes place in Las Vegas this week with all of the major manufacturers unveiling their new consumer electronic portfolios for the year ahead as well as exciting prototypes of future tech. Sony will be there, of course, but we do not expect any significant mobile news at this time.

Anyway, it’s an ideal time to speculate what delights Sony Mobile has in store for us with its future Xperia devices. If you could dictate the product planning at Sony Mobile, what new hardware features would you like to see baked in? Is Force Touch high on the agenda or perhaps the use of OLED displays? How about a secondary screen as seen in the LG V10? Or maybe you would like to see camera improvements such as optical image stabilisation (OIS)? Or maybe you want more RAM (Huawei are rumoured to announce the P9 at CES with 6GB RAM)? Let’s hear it – you’ve got a blank canvas, what would you like to see in the 2016 Xperia?

  • ChilliPSco

A camera that takes blur free photographs!

  • Sergio

Definetly, I’d like a mid range phone with a REAL mid range price. M4 and M5 are quite expensive for what they are, at least in my country.
When they release a good successor for my Xperia M2, with good specs and affordable price, then I’ll consider changing it.

In the mean time… ROMS! :D

  • DBS

What I would like was OIS and full manual controls on the camera (or at least camera2api NOT blocked).
    And Qi charging.

That’s what I’d like. But that’s not new tech. It’s 2012 tech that Sony still fails to make available…

  • ??????? ?????????

I would like to see completely new design in smartphones

  • 21187

To me, the Z5 design is perfect. I’d be happy with an SD 820, OIS, improved fingerprint reader, and Marshmallow in a Z5 body for the Z6.

  • Zeoxzy

battery life, battery life, battery life

  • ramuk

I want the concept “Y” phone. Concept “Y” looks incredible to me.

    * Metal build with very little bazel

    * Camera with better manual controls

    * 3200mAh battery for 5.2″ inch phone, 4000 mAh for Z Ultra successor

    * Better front facing stereo speaker

    * Screen that is closer to surface glass with better anti-reflecting, anti-glaring coating.

    * Concept for marshmallow as the main software. This should take care of the update process.

    As for new tech –

Force Touch – kinda gimmicky to me

Secondary screen – kinda gimmicky to me
OLED display – I know that they are not as efficient as Sony’s QD display so still no but if they can improve then yes.
More RAM – No need. 3 GB is more than enough if you can optimize it properly
So ultimate, I’ll say surprise me Sony with your new tech.

  • dragonsneeze

A Goddamn audio chip, RGB OLED for the compact so it’s thinner, USB-C of course, that curved cam sensor and maybe wireless charging.

  • >>Force Touch Is high on the agenda or perhaps the use of OLED displays?

<<Owned several devices with two GB of RAM – 1 GB freely. See reviews communicators on the Internet, which RAM is 3 GB and, in particular, Asus Zenfone 2 with 4 GB of RAM – so these devices also 1 GB of RAM free. Don't see the point…

  • Tobias

I don’t mind a thicker phone with bigger battery. Or a real flash o dual led. And USB type-c and wireless charging and 4gb of ram. And force touch.

  • >> Force Touch Is high on the agenda or perhaps the use of OLED displays?

  • Omarion07

OIS, improved camera software algorithm, dual or triple flash, improved audio chip, bigger battery or better battery optimisation (than z5), new design and QHD display

  • DBS

OIS and SteadyShot are NOT the same. SteadyShot only works on video. OIS works on video but most importantly on photos. THAT’s why no flagship who wants that name should skip such a basic feature.

  • Chuck

Well they already have pretty much everything I need, but I could use a better camera algorithm and an IR blaster.

  • Flavio Aguiar

Boas!

  • John-Mark Christmas

It will be fascinating to see the Sony and Xperia™ logos light up on both the front and rear of the handsets. Apart from that, continue along the lines of the Z5 line. Battery life is of PARAMOUNT importance. WOW us in that aspect. I’m a design junkie, hence my reason for getting the Z2. Still the best looking Xperia in my eyes, though the front of the C5 Ultra with those minimum bezels has edged it out a bit.

  • Shimoda

Acho bem difícil, principalmente com o dólar alto assim. O mais barato que achei, antes de adquirir 1, foi no Mercado livre por 3.000. Paguei 550$ no dourado

  • Makiz

    Something to kick Samsung’s a$$!!

  • AnDy HeYhei

A rom which can be rooted without unlocking BL should be included in the device:P And please, have a better front camera for flagship like the Xperia C5 :)

  • Matt

Dangerous Question, but ill answer it anyway.

more managable bezels on top and bottom, no need to be extremely thin but more of the symmetrical would be great.

    retaining the Omnibalance design.

Marshmallow concept like UI and OS, more material and kill all the transparent UI to shut people up.

ther rest is the usual, snapdragon 820, bigger battery .

IOS would be great, but NO if it means a hump, Form over function.

  • razorg

Talking about the Z series flagship devices, 4GB memory is a must, a camera sensor with OIS and dual led, leading the industry in terms of battery life, using UFS 2.0 fast storage chips, and usage of metal bezels would be nice in ALL MODELS (Compact, Z and Premium). Also, Sony should improve itself in terms of software as well, it’s hard to accept the fact that they released Z5 series with unoptimized software, mostly camera-wise!

  • Chuck

I’d like a bigger battery too, but they should bundle a fast charger. My Z2’s 3200mAh battery takes too long to charge.

  • David Hvatov

Snapdaron 1690 Deca Core 3,5GHz 64bit with Adreno 1130 GPU
    10GB DDR5 RAM
    60MP Dual flash xenon camera
    1TB SSD…

… will be enough for me.

  • Niels d. G.

    week-long battery life

  • edyboyster

    Xperia GO2 please.

  • edyboyster

    I meant experia active 2

  • karam abi karam

Manual camera for full resolution camera on z5,
    iso controll for 23mp

  • Johan

Snapdragon 820 supports the 802.11ad protocol (60ghz), which (among other things) allows for wireless real time screen mirroring (supposedly without noticable latency).
I would like for Sony to offer a solution that utilizes that.

Better support for physical mouse/keyboard (however, this is something that really is more of an issue that Google needs to address in Android directly).

Option to toggle resolution (and possibly even dpi) over all and per app basis (all OEMs should take ALOT of notes from an app called “SecondScreen”).

    Better camera (preferably with OIS).

    4GB RAM.

    Smaller bezels.

Bigger battery (making them a bit thicker would be worth it for me)

An extra Bluetooth transmitter, so that you can connect more than one Bluetooth headphone at a time (just stupid that you can’t do this already).

    What they do NOT need:

“Force touch”/” 3D touch”… gimmick that would only complicate the support for physical mice/keyboards even further.

Any resloution over 1080p is just unnecessary (unless they add that option to toggle the resolution yourself).

Thinner phones… again, this would only be at the cost of battery size, which needs to be bigger. Phones are also beginning to be so thin that it actually becomes harder to hold them.

  • fluxx

Steady shot works very well with videos but OIS is important for better low light shots (although the 6P proved that OIS isn’t a must).

  • Svnjay

Great battery life like the Xperia Z3 and Z2.

Color accurate screen like the Galaxies and iPhones.

Xperia Z3+ thinness and design + Z5 Xperia engraving and Teal color

    4GB ram and 14nm SOC.

  • fluxx

OIS, dual flash, better image algorithms.

I’m still not a fan of onscreen buttons, just a waste of space, but I’m not sure how that would work with the Omni-balance design, which I like (except for the bezels).

More scratch resistant screen (gorilla glass).

Dual SIM worldwide (not officially available in a lot of countries yet).

I like that physical switch on the oneplus two.

    Keep the camera button.

Do not implement nonsense like heart rate sensors.

No larger screen, stick to Full HD.

  • I hope to hear something about the Marshmallow schedule

  • Never heard of.

  • XperiaJunkie85

The S-Master digital amp is the one thing I crave in the next Xperia flagship. You can keep your 4K display and ultra fast focus just give me Sony’s own DAC.

  • Vuyo Ncube

    1. 1440p/60FPS video
    2. WhiteMagic OLED display to rustle Samsung’s jimmies or Crystal LED to rustle Apple’s jimmies
    3. Native HDR display in time for the UHD Blu Ray format unveiling if that doesn’t exist already
    4. Software that combines mobile data and WiFi for better download speeds like Samsung’s Download Booster. Piss off Samsung by allowing 2G data along with dynamically balancing data and WiFi for power saving and maximising speeds in areas of poor connection (Samsung only allows 4G and strong WiFi)
    5. More microphones
    6. Bigger front facing cameras
    7. OIS + SteadyShot EIS working at 4K (no other OEM has managed that)

  • Utsav Shah

Don’t care about innovations. Give me a new beautiful design like the old Arc, T, Ray, Neo.

  • Johan

  • Perry Shilton

    Optical zoom!

  • dko3tgk

Just smaller bezels. That’s it. What is the need for such large bezels? I still haven’t given up my ZL because I like the 5″ 1080p screen with a small footprint because of the bezels. Make the Z Compact 5″ screen with much smaller bezels and make the Z 6″ screen with much smaller bezels. The Z is just too big for one hand, and the Z Compact has a sub-5″ 720 screen. There is no need to make the phones so big with bezels making up so much of the space. Update processor, keep it waterproof, keep most everything else the same. Smaller Bezels!

  • theskig

    – Optical stabilization for camera (please don’t reply “Hey, Xperia has OIS!!!” No, it hasn’t.)
    – ir blaster (you never know)
    – DAB+ radio (at least in Europe)

  • meat

color accurate screen like galaxies?man, what drug is you on?

  • Svnjay

I would like to ask you what you’re on.

  • daftrok

    1. OPTICAL. IMAGE. STABILIZATION. Increasing the ISO and speeding up the shutter speed is a horrible trade off for not having OIS. The Nexus 6P almost made the best phone but ruined it because it didn’t have OIS. With OIS you can decrease the ISO and slow down the shutter speed. This means less noise artifacts better light distribution and an overall better shot.

    2. The Camera App is better than it was in the past but still crappy. I can’t pick the 12800 ISO without going to the SCN settings in manual mode. I can’t pick 60 fps for 720p video. I can’t even choose 4K, i have to go to “4K” mode. These are extra useless steps. Learn from LG on how to make a manual camera app. And seriously. EVERYONE USES SONY SENSORS. Fix the automatic mode algorithm. I rarely have confidence in Superior Auto mode when taking a shot. It is better than it was before but it still is nothing compared to Samsung or Apple.

    3. Better flash/flashlight. The Fill Flash effect is great but I feel a stronger flash (possibly two tone flash) will improve this.

    4. Remove the Sony logo from the front of the phone. It seems like every manufacturer except the sensible ones like Motorola, Huawei, Nexus and Apple realized that having the logo on the front of the phone is distracting. It already says it on the back.

    5. Put on a rubber/metal back. The glass back is sexy but impractical. Apple knew this after the iPhone 4/4s and went back to metal. Samsung will realize this too.

  • Timel

On screen buttons really wasted of space and so annoying, Especially when I use camera ui

  • Timel

I heard that Samsung is going to reveal their Flexible OLED smartphone similar to Kyocera Proteus So, Sony should show their new cool innovations too

  • sebastianer

What I’d like to see in a 2016 Xperia Z compact:

    – Better camera picture quality (currently my Z5 with 5.1.1 get more details at 2MP than 8MP or 20/23MP). 8MP are like 3-4MP upscaled to a fake 8MP resolution. ( Source: https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z5-Z5-Compact-Z5-Premium/Camera-Photo-details-2MP-vs-8MP-vs-20MP-comparison/m-p/1079527#U1079527 )

    – Better Memory Card Reader. (I’m using a Samsung PRO+ microSD card, with up to 95/90MB/s read/write. But the WRITE limit of this phone at the moment is 20MB/s over USB 3.0 using MTP, and 37MB/s using an app to test the SD of the phone).

    – Quicker software updates… (Seriously…Jan 2016, where is Android 6? Many mid/high end phones already have 6.0 at the moment).

    – An optional 100% vanilla firmware. Not that buggy AOSP source, only flashable with unlocked bootloader (or, just get rid of the DRM partition and let the users unlock the bootloader without messing the camera).

  • Madis Otenurm

Durability. I’ve seen and heard bad things happen with Xperias and I would not want them to happen with me.

  • Alfie De Castro

The smaller the processor the lesser they produce heat gives more power and performance.. QHD screen as Samsung Galaxy Note and S6 series Has.. although z5 premium has 4K screen.. still galaxy s6 screen has better viewing angle..z5 premium can only play and capture 4k video but not the viewing experience.. Where is IGZO 4K/QHD Screen? The mobile board should be Tropicalized able to withstand natural heat and humidity. Am a fan of Xperia and Samsung I got both devices. XZ5 and Galaxy note edge

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

S6 edge design with sony logo. :-)

  • mawhob22222

    This is from Samsungarena

  • Svnjay

    ./

  • MaciejMalec

All what we need its update to 5.0 on E4 and E4g :)

  • ealtin

Dear Sony. Please do a proper remake of Mini pro. Full slide-out qwerty keyboard. Small screen. Small battery. Relatively good power. Decent hardware and recent software. Sturdy design. Thank you.

  • Azhy Najmadin

    – improve camera hardware ( ois + edge to edge sharpness, not blurry edge with fine detail on center)
    – improve camera software ( using lower iso setting on auto mode with a better flash ( dual tone maybe !)
-use bigger battery new technology that imports more battery in a small space
    – use OLED display, so the black could be black and white could be white
    – use a dual speaker like black berry passport ( high sound with best quality)
    – snapdragon 820 with 4 GB ram including xperia z6 compact, not 3 GB for the compact one as they did for z1c and z3c
-the design is fine but please with no bezzel
    – change the UI from Google stock to a new PlayStation UI ( I liked more kitkat over this lollipop)
    – waterproof+ finger print scanner like z5
-use a better rear and front glass ( I have z3 it scratchs easily.

Over all I have z3 dual and ai won’t change till z8 dual maybe its fine for now. But still I love sony and I want to make the best.

  • Camilo

Better camera with fully manual controls on full resolution. Also that the bottom speaker sounds as loud as the top one, and yes, an OLED screen would be hella cool, or maybe an AMOLED for better contrast. And something that I would really love is a physical home button. I really hate software buttons occupying screen real state. Finally, never leave waterproof design.

  • Azhy Najmadin

Hey timel I was looking for your old comments, Finally I have found you again here . I love the way you are still commenting , good to see you again.

  • Company like Oppo is improving camera with Oppo F series and Oppo F1 but I am not sure Sony is doing!!

  • Lol do you really think Sony can ever kick Smasung with their pathetic cameras?

  • Przemek Jordanek

you can root most phones without unlocking bl, z3c for example

  • hansip

Better JPEG compression, working camera API, bring battery life back to real 2 days at minimum, that’s it for me. No ois is fine if one can do shutter time manually.

  • webuser.my

I just want a 64GB option, or even a 128GB option, and better front speakers please… Ever since the Z3, the speaker quality has been getting worse (losing bass and getting softer)..

Larger battery will never harm a product as well.

  • ack

First, Sony should change the camera from a 24mm lens to a narrower 26mm or 28mm, so people would stop complaining about the “poor detail” BS. It’s simply too confusing for most people and reviewers.

Second, extend the Intelligent Active SteadyShot video to 4K. Fully-stabilized 4K video would put the Z6 way ahead of the competition! Not that there is any phone remotely close to the Z5’s FHD video now, but there’s always room for improvement. :)

Third, add OIS, but not at the expense of the closed-loop actuator. That dang thing is too good not to have for taking videos! :D

  • KIMI

Numbers don’t mean shit if the OLED screens are way too oversaturated
    *eyes burns away*
    my eyes!!

  • KIMI

NEW S-MASTER CHIP FOR THE z6
    we must

  • Svnjay

Except that a well calibrated OLED will not be oversaturated.

  • KIMI

I’m no engineer but if that’s possible why haven’t Samsung done so instead of having that “in your face” colour intensity.

    BUT
If Sony can eliminate the flaw most OLED display have then I’m all in

  • Svnjay

    Except they had…

  • KIMI

    They had?
I just had a look at the S6 edge not too long ago and it still feels oddly bright in some colours

Z5 still has better camera tho, they just need to redo their algorithm to get rid of that water colour effect

  • subm

better camera algorithm to win those review competition
better hardware and specs can win some support from those who like numbers
trending features but no force touch since it makes phones thicker and heavier
    RAW

  • KIMI

    You’re goddamn right!

  • Melvin Mejia

A PHONE LIKE XPERIA SP WITH MULTI COLOUR LED NOTIFICATION, STEREO SPEAKERS, WITH SONY APPS, AND WITH GREAT PROCESSOR, GOOD CAMERA, AND PLEASE NEVER EVER MAKE AN OVAL DESIGN PHONE LIKE SAMSUNG GALAXY, if you want try something different I PREFER A CURVE PHONE LIKE XPERIA L OR XPERIA T, THANKS SONY

  • Pokance

How about a completely new Xperia flagship phone?
-New Design (No more omni balance)
    -New UI (Xperia Concept)
    -New OS (6.0)
-New Camera (Z5’s is still awesome, but image processing technology could get better)
    -New Processor (SD820)
-Removable Battery would be really nice
-Three days battery life would also be nice though
-For Premium line, TRUE 4K Display
    -Continue Compact line. They’re amazing!

  • Malih

Well the standard hardware features like lightning-fast fingerprint and OIS on all phones.

But most importantly more features on Sony’s own app.
The apps I find well made by Sony is Music (including MusicFX), and What’s New (good app but I don’t actually need it).

The camera app (even the new Marshmallow-beta one) is severely lacking, especially on manual mode, or they should at least enable Lollipop camera API to allow 3rd party app access to manual controls just like Apple does with iOS (their own camera app is minimalistic, but they allow 3rd party app to access manual controls through an API).

Better selfie camera app, devices like C5 Ultra have a 13MP selfie camera but the Selfie camera app is sorely lacking in features,
I find ASUS and Samsung have a lot of gimmicky features, but also useful ones like the Panorama/Wide Selfie, Voice Trigger and Face-count Trigger.

  • Kunal Shukla

sony has the worst panorama mode ever on a flagship device.

  • Artm

    Qwerty-keyboard and decent audio components

  • Zohaib

I would like to See Carl Zeiss Lens in place of G lens
    in top of Sony sensor.

  • Peter Georgiou

Really need a screen like the C5 Ultra, not meaning the resolution but the thin bezels.

A complete redesign, omnibalance is nice, but now tired. If they want to increase appeal they need a complete change, like the S6 edge.

Software improvements that are unique, practical and useful. don’t ask me what, if I knew that I wouldn’t be a builder.

    RAM and Storage improvements obviously

  • Barakat N Al Lamki

a new sony interface as will to a new phone shape(design) and for waterproof phone to have an double led flash light that not hidding under the phone back cover(gives a blue color photos)

  • jamie evans

First, I really want to see a brand-new design. I like Xperia design, most don’t. That’s why Xperia phones struggle to sell. Also Sony must improve the camera. Most youtube phone reviewers say Z5’s camera isn’t the best… Anyways, I hope Z6s will be NEW and FRESH

  • Rixen Rae

something that doesn’t look like every other stupid phone on the market. Flip phones are due for a come back now that Adele has made them cool again

  • DODO1515

    Well said!!!!

  • Willian Quah

Xperia with military standard 810G shockproof saltproof etc
    fingerprint sensor
128GB internal with external SD card
    front LED Flash

  • ymytbb .

    DESIGN CHANGE

  • Camilo

    Also USB-C port.

  • Better cameras (both front and back). Better speakers. Better screen. And not too big please. See example: iPhone.
I believe iPhones do not have front-facing stereo speakers but their speakers sound really good (loud and deeper), better than Z5’s. Their cameras don’t have the biggest megapixels but the colours and dynamic range of the images produced are stellar.
I mean come on now. Does Sony even care to compete or what.

  • Chan Kin Cheung

By saltproof do you mean salinity-proof? Then it is not achievable, it would seriously mess up the salinity gradient necessary for all chips to work. If you mean alkaline-proof, then it can be done. Just like when you drop the phone into a highly saline liquid (seawater), then your electronics is as good as dead.

  • Chan Kin Cheung

Adele makes EVERYTHING cool if she wish.

  • skyzo97

Mid-range phone with front stereo speaker

  • Buci

Bring back the magnetic charging dock support and IR blaster!

  • iia3ezu

    USB-C or else GTFO.

  • shyam

Which kicks apple and Samsung ass

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

    1. SD820
    2. 4GB ram (I think 4GB is totally enough. No need to go beyond that atm)
    3. 32/64GB internal storage with expandable storage.(if they give 64gb option I am totally getting it)
    4. FHD/2K/4K display 5.2-5.5″ (With ability to change the resolution)
    5. At least 3000mAh battery
    6. With new camera sensor with at least 240fps slo-mo video recording.(Everyone’s going with 240fps and Sony is still on 120fps)
    7. Improved finger print scanner
    8. At least 8MP front facing camera(I think they should go with wide angle 8MP)
    9. Wireless Charging
    10. USB-C
    11. Two tone flash Or use two LEDs (Xenon would be awesome)

I know it’s a lot to ask but I am totally paying for it :D

P.S: Improved Camera driver’s a must. I thnik my wishlist is fair to ask cause this is like all in one. Hope to see a solid battery life in upcoming Xperia’s and Software.(which concerns me a lot)

  • Makiz

You find their pathetic cameras into the pathetic Samsung smartphones and the iPhones. Their cameras are exceptional on Z5 series, now they have to correct other details.

  • hansip

On screen buttons is better than a capacitive one actually, more uniformity. You know that a button in screen and the on screen button should have the same form and functionality. rather than separate it like they are different entity.

if you hate them, then you might as well convert all the screen into a capacitve fixed button one,

The side buttons on the other hand is pretty mandatory, but the navigation button is not, plus with all the rotation of the devices can do, the onscreen button will not be fixed into one location. that my friend, is the beauty of onscreen buttons.

  • hmmm

1/2 camera senzor !!!! it seems that samsung galaxy s7 will have this senzor so all xperia phones will be a junk compared with that! :((( so bad, sony is going to change the camera in 2-3 years if we look at z to z3+,no changes when it comes to camera senzor!

  • a.mubher

Different philosophy, Sony deliver a wide gamut ( wider range of colors ) which means it will never be “accurate” but it gives excellent vibrancy. That has always been my problem with Iphone screen, very dull and lack of vibrancy.

Galaxy on the other hand is no “accurate” by any means in its default mode, it has a wide range too, but coupled with infinity high contract, the result is just too much vibrancy. While in the “accurate” mode which is measured websites (for some reason) it is very good but still with its share of flaws like the green tint with even the slightest tilt and the MAJOR flaw of black clipping. When I compare them to Xperia the colors still lack “pureness” maybe due to the the whites being grayish / greenish.

  • subm

Sony should change its marketing strategy
like sell the device as soon as possible since announced to prevent people to forget it

Camera behind the screen. They were working on this for a while. It’d make for great selfies (if that’s your bag), smaller bezels (everyone here’s bag), and would also be nice to have on a future smartwatch…

  • Edwin

What I would really like to see, is to reduce the phone size, but maintain the same screen size.

  • shivaprakash
  • ludimilojko

    Lemme see …
As first, no stupid trendy features, like 3D touch, heartbeat sensor and stuff like that. I’m also not really a fan of a fingerprint sensor.
Then, the camera … I would like to see a not so wide angle lens. Maybe something around 35 mm. Less distortion, less corner softness. Next, a same (or, maybe, bigger?) size sensor with less pixels and more dynamic range. And an ability to choose the amount of Noise Reduction to be applied, as for color noise, so for chroma noise. That means RAW support.
I also don’t mind the bezels, the latest, fastest, tallest and blondest CPU, but a nice screen, with deep blacks but still good visibility on the sun, would also be nice, thank you.

  • SM

Not tech rather i’d like to see a proper market strategy and business acumen which starts from proper price tag. reduce the overrated price according to market zone to penetrate right targeted market and audience and Sony you will be in the top,

  • Yves Rilloraza

Wireless charging. Actual waterproofing not just water resistant that will allow it to be used in pools and beaches.

  • George

    A new Xperia flagship MUST:

    – Keep the SD card slot
    – Have the BEST camera in a smartphone
    – Have FULL Camera2 api support (RAW, manual controls,…)
    – Have a brighter flashlight (I have a Z1 and hate the flashlight it has, I don’t know if newer Xperias have brighter flashlights)
    – Keep the FM radio
    – Keep the clean and close to AOSP software (do not put bloatware)
    – Have the BEST screen in a smartphone (It must have great colors, be very bright, be power-efficient and its lowest brightness must be VERY dim)
    – Have 2-3 day good battery life (not 1-2 like the Z5)
    – Be more durable – like the Moto X Force, so that we do not have to use a case!
    – Be AOSP friendly (Sony you have done something with this, but you have not made the camera work PERFECTLY in AOSP – AOSP users want the same quiality pictures they take with a Sony stock rom)
    – NOT take worse quality pictures when it has an unlocked bootloader (I will buy a Nexus if the new Xperia flagship disables features such as camera algorithms and Miracast when we unlock its bootloader
    – Be more affordable (if that’s impossible, do not sacrifice the phone to make it affordable)
    – Always be one of the first phones to recieve the newest software updates fastly without bugs and have the latest version of Android
    – Have a better microphone (My Z1 microphone sucks…)
    – Keep the front facing speakers
    – Always have the newest CPU (Do not put the Snapdragon 810 in the Z6, put the 820 or a newer one if a nwe one comes out)
    – Have smaller bezels
    – Keep the 5.2 inch screen size (do not make a huge phone!)
    – Come in 3 different varints (like the Z5 – compact, regular, premium)

And probably the most important – you must make the new Xperia available in the US, like the Galaxy S6 (in all cariers and it should be available with a contract and cost a lot less if you buy it with a contract) and improve your marketing!

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

i’m always agree what timel saying despite of harsh thing he said….he is truly fan….. people who butthurt is people who follow blindly like isheep fanboy

  • Bashar Shehab

Sir, if Sony did that people will not be ready to pay +900$ for it because things you mentioned are very expensive to put it in a smartphone all together

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

actually sony already developed CLED in CES 2012 but they drop this project. CLED has all OLED has and also fix the flaw on OLED.

because many people make harsh statement on CLED despite this technology still new.

  • lailai

Transparent back panel that can see through to electronics? Kinda cool

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

like LG FX with firefox os rite?

  • Rob Gillingwater

Up to 5 day battery life !

  • deekbee

Manual camera controls (colour control, shutter speed, ISO), maybe a decent interface (honestly, the interface really is dire – even after all the updates).

And maybe update the camera app so it starts up fast – too many times I sit there for a few seconds wondering when its going to decide to open the app.

Improved image processing times (it really is amazingly slow) and decent JPG processing.

  • Mister R

OIS, the same amount of ram that every other 2016 flagship will have, and OLED screens. Force touch would also be cool. But the biggest thing for me is OIS.

  • Brian Haugen

    OLED display.

  • George

Yes, but I would buy a 900+$ phone if it had all of the above, because I would keep it for many years.

  • Making a wish for cute things

WHAT ABOUT UPDATES? Sony isn’t even updating our phones while the poor MOTO G is receiving Android 6 this month worldwide.

    Answering the question: Laser focus.

  • psychopunk

I would really, really, really love to see an awesome device like the Xperia ZL again. A 5″ flagship specd device with awesome looks. Screen to body ratio equal to or better than the ZL! That would make my day. I wouldn’t mind giving up features like water and dust proofing to get a more compact device, in terms of screen-to-body ratio.

I used to own a ZL and loved it. Solid phone. Unfortunately I broke it. I couldn’t get a hold of one again. I haven’t liked any other smartphone as much, ever. I wouldn’t rather have any other phone. But the specs are a bit outdated now. A successor with updated specs and a better display would be really, really, awesome! I have been waiting for a worthy successor for a long time.

  • smileyint

Manual settings for both camera and video on 23 MP. Better Digital OIS. Lesser bezel at the top and bottom. Redesign image compression. USB type C. IR blaster if possible.

  • AnDy HeYhei

However the latest device (i.e. from Z3+), bootloader need to be unlocked, and it seems to be the new trend of Sony devices lol

  • HIERRO SULISTYO

    Projector

  • Camalplus

I’d like the Sony Z to look outstanding amongst other smartphones. To be recognized in the crowd. Enough cores, enough megapixles. Now let Sony focus on the look. If Galaxy S6 Edge Plus were the same quality as Sony Z2 I’d not hesitate to swap my Z3 into Samsung. Sony! The design counts. Believe me.

  • Juan Paulino

    A new body design.

  • J Cav the Great

+ AMOLED Display for better Battery (and features).

    Maybe a “MAXX” version Z6. Like a 3400maH Battery on a 9.0mm device.

Multi color LED notification light (also make it a little bigger)

    Front Facing Flash.

    Keep OmniBalance design.

    Slimmer Bezels.

  • Timel

Agree! the powerful manual mode but the another most important thing is Sony need to improve their shitty superior auto seriously, Sony must understand that most people don’t use manual mode on smartphone, but often use auto mode. If camera auto mode in Sony flagship phones can’t beat competitors, So…

  • Timel

Stop that stupid Motorola style, Just build one monster flagship, it’s enough.

  • Timel

They just can’t accept the fact…

  • Timel

    Thank you my friend ^_^

  • xtess3ractx

    Water/dust proof.
    Smaller top/bottom bezels.
    Keep dual front speakers.
    Better image stabilization.
Move to full metal body construction.
    Keep screen sizes reasonable:
    Compact 4.6″(1080p)
    Z6. 5.2″(1080p)
    Ultra 5.5″(4k)
I’d also like something done on the software front. I like Sony’s light touch on Android, but coming from someone that typically uses cyanogen I do appreciate there customization.
I.e: Manual camera mode, better theme support, adjustable toggles, notification light customization, and general ui customization. Maybe partner with cyanogen but keep Google now and related services.

  • aseuss

I’d like to see an Xperia with Walkman A26 hi-res audio, STARVIS low-light image sensor for taking pics in near-zero lighting, and 4500 mAh battery. Also, a separate Playstation Phone that plays PS Vita games–not the ‘PS’ phone they released in 2010 that merely played ‘Playstation Certified’ garbage.
And in general, I’d like to see them actually promote their own stuff. This ‘build it and they will come’ approach might have worked in 1985, but ain’t gonna work today.

  • Hritik Bhimani

    -brand new design (preferably metal)
    – gorilla glass screen
    -ir blaster
-full manual camera controls with dng image capture
-OIS and stronger flash (dual tone or even triple)
    – improve image processing algorithms
-fix the fingerprint sensor(it works terribly on z5 which i am using)
    – keep all the awesome xperia features like waterproofing, expandable storage, fm etc

  • lailai

i rather wan like galaxy note 5 with back panel sticker removed

  • Julian Lewis

    128 gigs of internal memory

    What a blind people

  • 1. Better Battery
    2. Better Cemera
    3. Stronger Body
    4. Better and stronger Camera Flash
    5. Louder Speakers
    6. Less heating
    7. Front Camera Flash
    8. Waterproof not just resistant!
    9. Better software from Sony
    10. Reasonable Prices
    11. Less Size same screen
    12. Gorilla Glass
    13. But most of all, BETTER WORLDWIDE MARKETING, that only unique and smart ppl choose to biy SONY XPERIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • aseuss

Excellent ideas. But we’re talking into the wind unless Sony actually hears about this. So go ahead and twitter @SonyXperia and @SonyXperiaUS to let the folks up at Sony Mobile know what Sony customers want–and that there’s a lot of us out there! They’re receptive to comments and suggestions so don’t hesitate to contact them.

  • Right

  • – Connector and charging:
you could upgrade with wireless charging, but simply keeping the magnetic connector with the dock type Z1 extremely convenient especially in the car! Still on the subject micro USB TypeC.
    – CAM:
larger sensors with larger pixels, (just too many unnecessary megapixel!) optical stabilizer; API 2 with more manual settings and best SW
cover equipped to maximize the CAM with the addition of external optical lenses for more perspectives (universal ones do not fit well on Xperia!)
    http://www.xperiablog.net/forum/threads/xperia-photos-no-limits-accessories-for-best-shots.17023/
Maybe not what I expect from future smartphones, but what I thought I could have already with the current models that are lacking .. hope in the future …
    DO NOT CHANGE:
compact series and the display 720 are a great combination to keep more performance on smarpthone. DPI over 300 are not very useful even if you want something compact

    ;)

  • azzido

    1. Better camera with OIS and Xenon flash if possible (or at least Dual LED), curved lens, full manual support, iso and all options available at 23 MPx, 4K 60fps video with intelligent stabilization
    2. 5.7″ bright OLED screen finally…
    3. Epic New futuristic design (a variation on OmniBalance at least, maybe back to Arc shape?) with visible SONY and XPERIA marks as it is hardly to see these logos on Z5, why? The wow factor of Sony Ericsson W980
    4. Bigger, over 4000mAh battery, as battery life is no longer selling point of Xperias, sadly this is not only my opinion, stop decreasing it, improve finally
    5. S-Master amplifier with Mega Bass + INCLUDED GREAT HEADPHONES
    6. Better, louder speakers for both multimedia and calling
    7. Redesigned UI and new apps as current UI is already boring (almost the same each time new Z release)
    8. Latest Qualcomm processor and 4GB of fastest RAM, 64GB internal storage and SD
    card slot
    9. 1 flagship per year (or max 2, standard and compact) + great software / warranty support
    10. Improve quality of build and software as we can see how drastically the quality decreased with Z5: defective blurry camera, laggy UI, problems with power button and many, many others

If you will deliver above you will have my money :)

  • azzido

Please keep this green color from Z5!!!

But not only back and sides but front also!

With matt finish for back of course ;) and better oleophobic screen please.
No need of fake / temporal 4K.

IP 70 water resistance for bathing without issues? (and less warranty problems + key selling point?)

  • azzido

Please keep dual heat-pipes to reduce the heating as much as possible.
Change the adverts as these from Bonds was the worst I ever saw for any Xperia phone to be honest :(

  • azzido

Unfortunately agree, low res and always produces the black/grey block on one of the sides :(

  • azzido

The volume button needs to be higher than it is in Z5 ;)

  • Bashar Shehab

IP70 means the device wouldn’t be Waterproof any more

  • Mark Finney

I thought raw format option for the camera was obvious. And then I saw that less than 2% of posters here mentioned it. If it’s not asked for it won’t happen.

  • Rafal

    1. Different design – Z series became boring since 3 generation of almost the same phones.
    2. Thinner screen frames.
    3. Kirin or Exynos instead of Snapdragon
    4. Software updates once per month

    Do I require impossible?

  • Naos

    Optical image stabilisation
    better quality lens
    Faster image processing
Always preloaded camera app that opens every single time in less than 500ms

  • Irvan Alexander

better camera software and a display with much better color, viewing angle and finally a FullHD screen on their compacts, as I can still see the pixels on my z3 compact even with its 319pixeldensity (which should already surpass the ‘retina’ theory)

  • Lunar

    Xperia Play 2 please.

  • ASIM SIDDIQ

Would like to see Sony release a tablet with 1080p resolution instead of having 1200p resolution. Don’t like 16:10 aspect ratio, looks strange.

  • ASIM SIDDIQ

Please also release that Z6 Ultra as soon as possible, we all can’t wait for it.

  • Fazi A Faizal

Well, I am a smartphone analyzer since 2008. I am Sony fan too.
I have read many reviews and i’d like to present some of my ideas…

    Camera:
Its the key selling point of Xperia. Main complaint for past few years is the high noise in low light photos, need to work on it. But I don’t think customers bother about higher resolution or zoom much, but they do bother about rich detail without noise. Equipping a xenon will be a great idea. Because many of the current smartphone lacks, therefore its a nich. Xperia can make use of it.

    Design:
I love the omni balanced design, but it seems that its getting too old. I’d suggest to make the back with metal, may be with textures. Also need to work on reducing the bezels, not only sides, but overall. Nowadays customers bother much about phone size to screen ratio.

    Battery:
Xperia is known for stable battery life, So better to maintain it, no need of any major changes there.

    Chip set:
Better to use the latest chip sets rather than tweaking the old chip set. (Sep 14, Note 4 came with SD805, where Z3 came up with modified SD801). Because customers bother about lates tech always, and chip set was a major draw back against the competition between Z3 and Note 4.

    Screen:
Sony has come up with excellent screen from Z1. No much complaints, better to have more contrast if possible, where samsung stays at top. Customer’s dont bither about resolution, therefore maintain it at 1080p or little higher. 4k is good, but not mandatory.

    Speaker:
Speaker position and quality are great, no complaints. Better to increase volume to Galaxy’s level. (Z5 66DB vs Note5 73DB).

    Marketting & Price:
My view, the Achilles’s heel of xperia is its pricing and marketing. Sony’s prices are known to being very steep at launch and fast decline after 2-3 months which unusual compared to other brands, specially against Samsung. Further availability across the world soon after the launch is not at all on par with Samsung. It reflect’s Sony’s poor supply chain management as well as lack of strategies in pricing and marketing. It’s something very bad in my opinion. It kills the brand image and customer perception on the brand.
I’d like to point my own example. S4 launched in Apr 2013 worldwide. (It was available in my country in less than a week after the launch). Launch price was 105k in April. In September 2013 Z1 was released by Sony along with Note 3 where both were better than in S4 in all areas.
Note 3 was available in my country on September itself, but Z1 came in November. At November both Z1 & Note3 were 90k, S4 was 75k. After 6 months, In April 2014, S4 was 65k, Z1 was 68k & Note3 was 76k. At that time, S5 was Samsung’s latest flagship and Z1 was Sony’s. Later in September I purchased a Z1 paying 50k when S4 was costing 54k.
Therefore, I am advising Sony to concern more in supply chain, marketing and pricing than any other areas in 2016.
    Thank you for read.. :D

To kick Samsung’s ass, they NEED TO improve the camera, bring us a complete futuristic redesign from Omnibalance, increase battery capacity to 3200mAh like the Z2, and get the best batch of LTPS LCDs from JDI. Sony’s software is excellent and if you’ve seen the Marshmallow concept, it actually blows stock Nexus away in performance, UI animations, and smoothness. They need to focus on the best of the best to truly let the Z6 succed.

  • Shamoy Rahman

To claw away at Samsung and Apple’s market share:

    – NEED TO improve the camera and bring hybrid OIS + DIS, manual, RAW, and 3 tone flash
    – Bring us a complete futuristic curved redesign from Omnibalance
    – Increase battery capacity to 3200mAh like the Z2
    – Get the best batch of LTPS LCDs from JDI (possibly OLED)
    – Give us PROPER waterproofing so that 99.999% flagships have no issues
    – USB Type-C with Quick Charge 3.0
    – Fast Wireless charging with Toshiba’s PowerIC chip
    – STOP marketing the phone with an ugly black wallpaper that makes people think its washed out and instead, use an colorful beautiful wallpaper
    – Make heavy marketing investments, put an ad in every subway

Sony’s software is excellent and if you’ve seen the Marshmallow concept, it actually blows stock Nexus away in performance, UI animations, icons. Sony’s Marhsmallow concept is butter silk smooth and is really simple and elegant to use, they should make this the official Marshmallow update for the Z3, Z5, and ship an even more improved version with the Z6.

They need to focus on the best of the best to truly let the Z6 succed. Focus on more rigorous testing of waterproofing in production factories and try to make the battery removable.
