Xperia M5 heading to Europe next month

in Xperia M5

Xperia M5 EuropeThe Xperia M5 was Sony’s most powerful mid-ranger when it was announced last August. Unfortunately for some of those that were eyeing up the device, Sony only released the Xperia M5 in selected emerging market regions. That will shortly change as Sony is expected to release the Xperia M5 across most European countries from next month.

Sony Mobile Poland and Netherlands have already confirmed that the Xperia M5 will arrive from the middle of February, with other key European regions also expected to announce availability in due course. Pricing for the handset has not been revealed, but let’s hope Sony will price it competitively as it still has a great spec-sheet and, with a 5-inch display, is a good all-rounder for most people.

The Sony Xperia M5 has a 5-inch 1080p IPS display, armed with the MediaTek Helio X10 chipset with 2GHz octa-core processor and IMG Rogue G6200 GPU, 3GB RAM, 16GB internal storage (9.1GB usable) and comes with a ‘two-day’ 2600mAh battery capacity.

One of its standout features is the rear camera with 21.5MP Exmor RS sensor and ISO 3200 with 0.25-second Hybrid Autofocus that utilises Phase detection AF (PDAF) for faster shutter speed response and Contrast detection AF for added precision. It also has a 13MP Exmor RS front-facing camera capable of integrated autofocus and Full HD video.

Other features include IP65/IP68 certification for dust and water resistance, capless USB charging, Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n) and stainless steel corners. The Xperia M5 has dimensions of 145 x 72 x 7.6 mm and weighs 142.5 grams.

  • LancerEX

But has Sony actually acknowledged the M5’s random shut down issue? Was supposed to get one as retailers assured that the new batches are fixed. Got the Z5 instead to be sure. Would have been a great phone too.

  • MoYeung

USA and Canada only has M4 aqua.

  • HAWX

It was a nice phone. But with Lenovo and Huawei devices anounced at CES and priced just 199$ I think M5 won’t see the success it deserved.

9.1GB Internal Storange…But it does support move to apps from SDCard?
And It does good gaming performance example: Asphalt 8, F&F Legacy, NFS No Limits, Real Racing 3?

  • Timel

It makes me laugh when I see Sony’s trying to say that how good their smartphone camera is… The fact that it’s nothing but a marketing hype.

  • Timel

The same price as Huawei Mate 8 ?

  • Nimda01

Hope it comes with new battery model.

Most of asian people who currrently using this shit Xperia M5 have a randomly shutdown issue due to defective battery, it won’t turn on unless you connect the charger.

And lastest firmware of this phone still have a lot of bug, very slow and lag.

  • Timel

Sony always have the problem with software… They only focus about hardware but really don’t know how to make a great software

  • MoYeung

Software made in Sweden branch of Sony mobile.

  • Matt

    Marshmallow support move to sd.

Look for other phone with mediatek hello x10. Gaming should be good enough. Don’t expect even z3 level of graphics. Mediatek chipset are known for their weak gpu.

In other words, don’t hold your breath. You get what you paid for.

  • Timel

    Swedish team sucks

    – Unstable software
    – Bad camera software
    – Ugly and Boring UI

  • Matt

Early batch? Time and time again, experience told us. Don’t buy early batch of any devices.

And wait for the reviews before doing software update.

  • Timel

Korean and Chinese manufacturers try to hit north America market while Sony left North America, it’s such a mega mistake for them.

  • Luis

Everytime there is a post about a phone you share your same negative opinion about software and hardware. Why dont you just go get a phone from another manufacturer? Go get a Nexus and note the bugs you find in that and report to Google. Im sure others are tired of reading your comments and they take up so much space that I dont even want to read other people’s comments. Jeez. I normally do not post on here, but this person has been annoying.

  • azzido

The only problem is – why it looks the same as Z series?
Really, are they going to blurr any differences between flagships and medium series?
They do not have any other clue for design???

Or maybe they fired all their designers?
    No clue. Anyone please?

  • azzido

the UI is not ugly, faaar from that to be honest, but yes, as it is same for so long time I get bored too.

  • Akand

I preferred M5 to Z5. But considering the price Z5 is a better option. Even Z2/3/3+ are better options than M5.

  • Shakeel Mohammed

So you’re trying to say stock Android is ugly another bias fool

  • Itsarapong Intoum

    That’s his style…

  • Itsarapong Intoum

I own this phone for three month and I would like to say almost everything of this phone’s great. Except the fucking ridiculous battery. No Idea why SONY choose low quality battery for their phone because their phone’s not cheap at all.

    So I sell the M5 and use Z5 now…

  • LancerEX

Not really, there was a time when stores stopped selling the M5, but until now M5 owners (old and new) still post the same issues in Xperia groups on Facebook even after having their M5 replaced over 3 times already.

  • Nimda01

Sony just found a solution about shutdown issue and using new battery since last year December batch.

However. They recall only September batch back to factory. October and November batches that is also defective are still in store.

Buyer must be careful before buying it

  • iia3ezu

Swedish work ethic is appalling, to say the least. Can’t believe Kaz hadn’t yet outsourced the job to more cost efficient countries.

  • iia3ezu

Or don’t buy it and wait for the 2016 devices, if you’re buying Xperia.

The time delay is ludicrous. Can’t believe you Europeans would put up with that.

  • iia3ezu

That’s the truth without the Sony-tinted glasses. It seems that the Swedish buffoons’ idea of ‘software development’ is plastering Material Design on existing apps or creating another ‘premium’ Xperia theme, yours for a couple of dollars and ‘free’ for Xperia Lounge Gold members.

  • Faisal Armand

I already bought M5, very impressed with the phone!.

The camera is actually the best in all Xperia smartphone! Better than Z2, Z3, and even Z5P (even with M5 shoots in higher ISO) check my google+ profile to see complete comparison

    https://plus.google.com/112067981098047328340

Battery life is good, I got around 5′ 30″ to 6hrs SOT

It has mono speaker but sounds better than xperia phones with stereo speakers

  • Ambitious Man

    Marshmallow? whennnnnnnnnnnn?

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

Sony still selling most problem device ever made. Hurmmm.. M5 in asia already had bad reputation regarding self turn off, display touch issue, heating issue, non working camera etc .

  • DIsChaos

Because he’s ain’t real Sony fan or customer, he just bashing why?I don’t know either
He is working for other companies which is dirty method, or he is a fanboy of others brand and defending it. But the way and timing feel like he is paid to bash sony products.

  • I have to get my Mom a new phone soon. Budget-wise, she can afford a new M5 or a new Z3 (the Z3 is still on sale on contract with Vodacom, a service provider in my country.) Does anyone have hands-on experience with both of these devices and is willing to share their impressions please?

  • Ailan Hidaz

Yes the M5 is amazing, having two myself I can agree it murders the Z series.
But you do need to address the elephant in the room – sony messed up big time for the asian variant of this phone as literally hundreds of people are complaining of the phone dying.

  • Ailan Hidaz

Because Samsung and Apple and LG all do the same that’s why.
It’s the same story across all manufacturers now, as samsung is making all of their mid rangers look premium, LG as well, and let’s not forget iPhones look the same.

  • Matt

Well if it’s going to Europe, I should be the new batch.

Oh who am I kidding, I only interested in Z line hahaha

That being said I did got a rocky start with the z line :p it’s typical

  • Ailan Hidaz

Except the fact that M5 and Z5 are easily the best camera phones of 2015…

  • Matt

    When did it announced? August.

The phone typically available 1 moth later.

So yes it’s an early batch. The unwritten rule is ( it’s unwritten because I made it myself through experience) wait minimal 3 months after the phone available to the market, not announced. You’ll get a perfect unit

  • Ailan Hidaz

Well, consider me and the thousands of people enjoying mediatek phones lucky as we are playing all high-end games with no lag.
I have an M5 and a C5, both are used for gaming.
I also notice no difference in performance between M5 and my Z5 (except Z5 starts to heat up after 5 mins of gaming).

Maybe stop the bias against another chip manufacturer until you actually try one yourself? Benchmarks aren’t everything… :)

  • Ailan Hidaz

Not been addressed officially, but I hear they are replacing batteries for some people.

  • Ailan Hidaz

Yes it supports app to sd cards, but it also depends on the app itself – some developers do not enable the feature so you can’t move it even if the manufacturer allows app to sd. Marshmallow supposedly allows us to use the sd card as the main storage, but no idea if sony will enable that whenever they launch 6.0 for all of their phones.
So far I have enjoyed all high-end games on full graphics settings (especially GTA San Andreas and Godfire) – I have not once seen stutter/lag in performance.

  • Ailan Hidaz

If you can afford a Z3, get a Z3. It’s still going to be supported for a year or so, M5 I cannot say how long until Sony decides to abandon it.
Performance wise, the M5 murders the Z3 in the camera department.
    Z3 outlasts M5 in battery.
Z3 also has remote play for PS4 – though I doubt your mom would appreciate that lol.
M5 has a wicked selfie camera.
M5 also has amazingly fast auto focus, so there’s that.

  • @naailzahid:disqus Thank you Ailan. Camera is not the most important scenario for my Mom. :-)

Have you used both devices? How is the speed and responsiveness in general use though? My Mom has been getting frustrated that her device has been “pausing” and has been very slow to respond to inputs and loading programs. I’ve witnessed it and it….is….very…. sloowwwww…………………

I have a theory that Sony (and all device manufacturers, in fact) use higher quality, higher speed and better binned flash for the internal storage in high-end devices than in mid-range devices, so the high-end devices will be more responsive than the mid-range devices even if the mid-range devices are released a year or more later.

  • @faisalarmand:disqus Do you have hands-on experience with both the Z3 and the M5? If so, please could you answer my question above? Thank you!

  • @akand8854:disqus Do you have hands-on experience with both the Z3 and the M5? If so, please could you answer my question above? Thank you!

  • Faisal Armand

I have both. And here is my experience with both phones

Display: both has the same resolution display. But what I don’t like about Z3’s display is the colour temperature is too bluish. M5 has balanced temperature but the display is too bright in minimum brightness value which is not very good if you’re using the phone in a dark room. Sunlight visibility is the same on both phones

Camera: M5 camera totally shit all over Z3’s. End of story. And if you’re a selfie maniac, you’ll love the front shooter on M5.

Performance: in general use, both are snappy enough and no noticeable speed difference. But M5 needs bug fixing update tho, I have found several bugs such as sound not coming thru the speaker but from the headphone jack even after I took the headphone off

Battery life: Z3 is a little better with 7hrs SOT. M5 does 5.5 to 6. Very good for a 2600mah battery

Speaker: M5 only has mono speaker but sound quality is equal, if not better than xperia phones with stereo speakers

    Anything more to ask?

  • Faisal Armand

I noticed that issue.. And i’m from Indonesia

I bought my M5 two weeks ago and I didn’t experience auto shutdown issues. Probably I got the newest production batch

  • @faisalarmand:disqus Thank you! I’ll come back if there’s anything more, but right now that’s great, thank you.

Hmmm… Not making my decision any easier. I think I’ll swing for a Z3 for my Mom since camera isn’t *that* important, but battery, reliability and stability is. But I’ll see what deals come up from the service provider.

Thank you for your help Faisal and @naailzahid:disqus ! :-)

  • Emil Oskarsson

Well atleast on par with other manufacturers :) But Timel only compare Xperia x10 camera with new flagship phones cameras from Samsung apple HTC etc

  • Nono

Outsource software? Are you crazy? By cost efficient I assume you mean southeast Asia. That would probably be the dumbest move you can make. Unless you just need something that barely works and is generally unstable shoddy code, then look elsewhere. You need highly educated, skilled programmers for a project like Android, not code monkeys who can barely create a third rate copy of Candy Crush.

That’s why high profile software continues to be made in-house in western countries. You can’t afford to get cheap and awful software from slave labor. This is not an assembly line.

  • Abdul Ghani

well there r some idiots who thinks benchmark is master race

  • Matt

oh, good to know :) sure benchmark is not everything

there you are answer from a first hand experience .
sadly i am not a mobile gamer :P

  • deekbee

Nope, they aren’t – possibly the best sensor, but pretty lousy post processing, and a camera interface thats been designed by someone who doesn’t understand imaging. The Samsungs and LGs clearly give better results.

The only place where the Z5 comes out “best” for the camera is DXOMark, who are demonstrably incompetent – the Z5 camera isn’t bad, but no way does it deserve #1

(and yes, I do have a Z5 Compact).

  • Abdul Ghani

none of the samsung lg and htc mid range phone beats m5 because m5 is high end type of mid range

  • Ailan Hidaz

Well I have a z5 and an m5, plus the missus has an s6 edge and both my phones outperform the edge in low light situations, and also in auto focus speed.

  • Ailan Hidaz

    Agreed

  • Ailan Hidaz

I would say both perform excellent in terms of overall usage. If camera isn’t an issue, go for z3 only because I know Sony will support it for a year or two

  • Ailan Hidaz

Well technically yes, but this is Xperia blog where all the “camera experts” and “processor technicians” come out and complain.

  • Timel

what’s wrong with you? this is in not my problem , this is your problem becuase i’m just saying the truth and Sony must improves these horrible problems ,sorry that i’m not a blind fan like you, you cant even accept the fact , you just wanna read only positive comments about Sony that’s so funny… LOL

  • Timel

Oh if the real Sony fan mean I must lick Sony’s balls everytime, yes! Im definitely not

  • Timel

YES! Stock Android is Ugly and Sony makes it worse.

  • Timel

I hope they will adapt the classy UI of What’s News App for the whole Xperia UI, Look! all big manufactures try to make their on unique UX

I bought M5, then month later, I bought Z5. I was impressed by M5 selfie front camera. The image are clear and beautiful. Still for me, Z5 is the best.

  • Hideg Jen? Péter

    Thank you for reply.
Also that GPU kinda bad render, glitching in GTA SA. (mediatek GPU doesn’t good at performance any games. Hats off Andreo 430.)

  • DIsChaos

You’re actually just bashing , if for you saying for one time a good thing about Sony is licking then Hell I confirm what I’m saying , for who exactaly you’re working? I don’t believe that you’re doing to improve Sony product , or point of view , that just silly way to try to make look bad .

  • azzido

And this is why I said Sony is no longer setting the standards or changing the rules.

Now Sony is only the followers, following the trends trying to fake other brands… If you stick to this model = there is no place for innovation.

Sony needs to find their own way with mobile division, innovate the market.

  • HAWX

Nope. M5 will be even more expensive.
Hey Timel do you what’s your best overall smartphone of 2015 :)? I think the V10 is great in terms of specs and software but size is quite big and LG’s UI is meh :/

  • HAWX

Z3 is great, except camera. Most importantly Sony still develops software on Z3. It will be better optimised for Z3. But, wait until the MWC if you can, and then make your desicion.

  • Ailan Hidaz

Actually Helio X10 comes with the PowerVR G6200 GPU which actually doesn’t stutter or cause glitching. I am playing GTA SA in full graphics mode – not one sign of lag or glitches.
Mali based GPUs do sometimes have stutter and lag though.

  • Hmmm… you’re brave enough to say that your devices outperform your wife’s… Brave man! ;-)

  • Hideg Jen? Péter

Oops, I though were Mali GPus, sorry for confusing. That PowerVR GPU is great.

  • Hendry Sbastian

    True

  • Džabas

And what about dual M5? Does any EU country will get this version?

    Finally available in Scandinavia!
