NTT docomo announces which Xperia devices will get Marshmallow; Z2 not on the list

Japanes Xperia Marshmallow_ThumbJapanese operator has announced which Sony Xperia devices it expects to update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. As you probably would expect, the update list includes all of the recent Xperia flagships including the Z3, Z4 (including tablet) and Z5 ranges. However, one big omission is the Xperia Z2 that has been left off the list – a big shame considering the near identical hardware versus the Xperia Z3. No timeline has been given on the release but a few official screenshots have made an appearance, which you will find below.

Whaaa. Hope they won’t do that to International XZ2 :D

P.S: I think it’s about time they release the update, Starting from Z2 :D :P

  • Coollead

It’s Docomo, of course they won’t update anything older than a year or so. Surprised the Galaxy S5 is on the list, but Samsung doesn’t actually change anything when they update older phones.

  • Sjuda

It will be in most markets, depending on the markets serviceproviders. (source: )

  • theskig

At least if you have a Z2 you can still use Kitkat, I think there’s nothing to complain :)

  • What about Xperia M4, C4 ,C5 Ultra

  • David Hvatov

    Don’t care about docomo…

  • Sjuda

You can just look it up yourself, to see the international versions update lifespan.

NTT Docomo specifies on there particular devices.

But to break it down: – Yes – Yes – Yes

  • Matt

im quite pleased looking at the comment section. no shitstorm here.

  • Cserg? László
  • shhh

It ain’t the international model anyway so no one gives a sheep.

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

docomo not giving update to to 2 years device. thats why japanese buying iphones

  • When will we receive Marshmallow?

  • CopperStew

that’s the only thing that bothers me with the Sony Xperia devices: If you got a old phone (2 years old or more) there are chances that you won’t getting any support afterward :/

    Too bad for them.

  • Svnjay

The Docomo version probably won’t get Marshmallow but the international version definitely will or Sony is asking for it.

  • Nimda01

There are only Z and A series to be selling in Japan.

That’s why these model are not in the list

  • Nimda01

Your list from Sony Mobile site are International/Global model

And this article is about Japanese model from NTT docomo carrier. that’s different.

  • MoYeung

    What about KDDI and Softbank?

  • Masamune2k

Docomo is not a reliable source for updates, because they are very conservative. I think they want to avoid customer support, which is very critical in Japan.
If I remember well, original Xperia Z is still on 4.2.2 in Japan.

  • Wolf0491

I’m surprised everyone isn’t cussing Sony out in comment section for Marshmallow yet lol. good job guys

  • Bashar Shehab

Man, this is docomo’s list, not Sony’s.

Sony mentioned earlier that Z2 and newer are getting 6.0.

  • CopperStew

Yeah I know, but I’m speaking in general

  • Dion

    When MWC starts

  • rygarto

as opposed to many other brands, which would never dream of supporting any device even that long

  • Thanks Bro

  • MoYeung

Docomo wants you to buy a new phone every one or two year?

  • Niels d. G.

Good ole’ kitkat, still has the sound enhancements fully functional.

  • Phazonclash

Well, at least they let you unlock the bootloader to install AOSP ROMs without wiping DRM keys and losing key features…

  • Emil Oskarsson

Thats the thing that keeps me buying Sony phones, Sony actually provides u with updates for MORE then 2 years after the release of the device (atleast with the Xperia Z series, which is quite obvious given the fact that they do often have far better hardware then the shitty budget and mid rangers :p)

Look at the updates for the xperia Z with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 pro SoC from 2012, it got the same updates as the Nexus 4 with pretty much the same hardware (some small changes on the SoC front i think, the Xperia Z have a newer version if im not mistaking). I mean just look at it: Launch version 4.1.2, update to 4.2.2, 4.3, 4.4.2, 4.4.4, 5.0.1, 5.1.1.

  • Timel

Software Update of Xperia phones depend on the carrier? Why Sony can’t do like Apple, Apple has one standard for iPhones software update, no matter where you are, if you’re a iPhone user, you will get the same standard as iPhone users around the world get, this is why most people don’t wanna leave iPhones and move to other smartphone brands, Apple is the best about warranty and after service and it makes apple iPhones have always had high value than others.

  • Timel

    God bless those japanese users.

  • MoYeung

Why people don’t complain about the nonfunctional sound enhancements with Android 5 is still a mystery to me…

android n will be here before sony start to roll out marshmallow, as soon as the galaxy s7 edge comes to the market, fuck sony im off to sammy. whats the point in having a 23 mp camera if it takes the same shit pictures as the 21mp? customer service in ireland is dreadful, we ring an irish number which is then transferred to the uk, and dont get me started on the sd810 overheating and apps freezing and suddenly closing down
    fucking disaster my z5 compact
ive taken all i can take, i thought the z5 compact would be better than my z3 compact but its dreadful and still using the same dated design
wake up sony before you lose all your customers

  • Niels d. G.

People do, but it’s apparently Google that we need to complain to. Because global equalizers is a functionality that Google removed from Android 5. I hope the sound enhancements will be fully supported again in Android 6, otherwise I’ll never update my Z2 tablet beyond Kitkat. I use it primarily for multimedia and the sound is just so hollow and quiet without Sony’s enhancements.

How about Z2 unlocked? Is it going to get Marshmallow upgrade?

  • mountain

Remember why iphone was not available on DoCoMo a few years ago? This was because DoCoMo must have apple customize their software for them. Apparently, apple refused so DoCoMo did not stock their phones. In the end, DoCoMo started losing shares so they gave in and uses apple’s standard software.

Taking apple as an example, I think this is what Sony mobile should do in the future.

  • mountain

japanese are not using 2 year old devices.

  • iosvsios

In the end, store staff takes your phone out at Docomo shops and preinstalls Docomo bloatware on your brand new iPhone when you buy one…

Anyway this is not a problem limited to Sony, but all Android phones. We’re at the mercy of carriers if we buy from them. Nothing new.

  • Sony is not in a position to negotiate deals with carriers, already they are not available on enough carriers worldwide and you are talking about Sony should walk in Apple’s footsteps? Well, in current circumstances, Apple can but Sony cant.

  • If you have problem with the carriers’ bloatware and their restrictions on updates then perhaps you should buy an unlocked phone.

  • nickisaacs

Still those ugly status bar icons??

  • SONY only

  • Franciscus Michael Panggabean

In which pretty much almost impossible to get in Japan. Just like in the US, the phone market in Japan is almost exlusively run by the carriers. If you want an unlocked phone, you have to import it, which makes it even more expensive here.

  • Franciscus Michael Panggabean

Actually it’s 4.4.2, the same with my Z1 as well. Docomo only gives out minor update and patches

  • Franciscus Michael Panggabean

KDDI is even slower in update. Dunno about softbank’s mobile, since I only used its iphone before moving to docomo for z1

  • Bashar Shehab

    You’re speaking nonsense **
Xperia Z was first introduced in 1/2013 and it’s support ended in late 2015 so it’s about 2.5~3 years of support, and same for Z1, M2, etc..

This is the bad support you’re talking about?

  • Well then this is clearly the loss of Sony, they should opt in to break these carriers’ oligopoly in Japanese & US Markets, thats why they are not selling enough in those countries. Surprisingly, Sony Mobile does not even sell good in its Home Country let alone the whole World, Iphone tops the chart for Japan. Sony’s Marketing Team should RiP.

  • Franciscus Michael Panggabean

Although it’s true that iPhone is dominating Japan’s market, Sony is by far still the number one brand for Android in Japan. Nowadays you pretty much only see iPhone and Sony, and barely Sharp here and there. The problem is not Sony itself, but how Japanese companies in Japan don’t really bother to promote their products, since it’s a necessity to have a phone, and people will update it anyway after 2 or 3 years since it’s pretty pointless to keep using for the same phone for more than a that. That’s why DoCoMo and others don’t bother updating past that. Also, Samsung is also losing in Japan right now, since somehow its brand name is really bad in Japan somehow. When S6 was out, it didn’t have the word “samsung” in its name, and Japan also didn’t get note5 or s6 edge plus.

  • smartuser8

    Xperia P ???

  • Wow thats a dream country to live in. Sony to be seen frequently and a Samsung free zone. That must be a good look i bet. :)
Well i beg to differ, as there are many companies producing cheap phones like Xiaomi and Sharp and whatnot and they advertise as well, i dont know what Sony does in Japan but in Pakistan, they are not even present here and we have to buy the imported international versions. If Sony operates here officially and advertises as well, i’d be seeing a lot of Sony phones here too. But right now i get this all the time that ‘oh i dint know they(Sony) make phones too!’. People here use iPhone and Samsungs and go for some cheap local brands as well. and one thing we all know, whatever is the case, SONY is expensive, no matter whichever country you are in.

  • Franciscus Michael Panggabean

Here’s the thing, in Japan, cheap phones like xiaomi or oppo or something similar are nonexistant. They only sell flagship level phone here, everything with the snapdragon 8oo series. That’s why cheap phones won’t threat the market here, because every single phone manufacturer pretty much only sell flagships in japan, and your phone is pretty much free with the contract, without any extra fee if you’re smart about it. And that’s why people in Japan in general don’t really care about using unlocked phone, since it’s really convenient to do that. And that’s why Japanese manufacturer like Sony don’t really care about advertisement because people will buy their phone anyway, when they can upgrade their phone.

The only reason for people to use unlocked is for cheaper plan, but then you won’t have enough coverage around Japan, and if you still want to use the big 3 providers (docomo, softbank, kddi), you’ll pay a more expensive monthly bill than if you’re in a 2-years contract. Also, the standard of living here is already pretty high, so phone bill doesn’t really matter that much to the majority of people, again another reason against contract here.

  • Kwstakhs

What do you mean guys? My Z1 compact’s sound is working the same way both at 5.0 and 5.1

  • Niels d. G.

In android 5.x, the sound enhancements (such as ClearAudio+) only work in Spotify and in Sony’s own apps. In Android kitkat, these enhancements worked in every app that has sound.

  • rubinaish

You shouldn’t consider the update to 4.2 as an actual “update”. They released the Z with 4.1 while 4.2 was already out for several months, apparently Sony was lazy there. So talking about support, the Z should have launched with 4.2.

  • Kwstakhs

That’s the only difference? Cause as far as I remember, my Xperia Z’s loudspeaker’s quality got better and a liiiitle bit better.Should I give downgrade a try? What do you think?

  • Emil Oskarsson

Well at the time it was running 4.1.2 I didn’t had the Xperia Z, bought it shortly after the 4.2.2 update was released for like 200 euros brand new when it actually costed about 450 euros here in Sweden at the time :D

  • Prasad Daki

Guys, a petition has been filed against Sony for neglecting some devices for updates like Xperia T3 E3 E4 E4g
