Xperia X Performance is the premium offering with Snapdragon 820 and water resistance

Xperia X Performance Black GroupThe Sony Xperia X Performance (F8131) and Xperia X Performance Dual (F8132) sit atop the Xperia X family tree. The handset is largely the same as the Xperia X, but includes a number of key differences that give it a premium positioning.

First of all, the Xperia X Performance is the only handset in the range that is IP68 certified for water and dust resistance. Secondly, it is armed with a much beefier chipset in the form of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. Thirdly, the handset has a brushed metal (or hairline) finish on the Graphite Black and White variants.

Other minor differences include a slightly larger battery at 2700mAh (versus 2620mAh for the Xperia X) and LTE Cat 9 support for faster downloads (versus Cat 6 for the Xperia X). These extra features mean that the Xperia X Performance is heavier than the Xperia X (165g vs 153g respectively) and thicker (8.7mm vs 7.9mm).

Apart from that, the feature set is the same as the Xperia X (see our earlier post here). It comes with a 5-inch 1080p display, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage (no 64GB option), a 23MP Exmor RS rear camera with predictive hybrid autofocus and 13MP front-facing Exmor RS camera.

The Xperia X Performance will launch in summer 2016, in four colours (White, Graphite Black, Lime Gold and Rose Gold). No pricing has been announced at this stage. The Xperia X Performance will be available in both Single and Dual SIM variants.

    i am soooooo upgrading

  • Don’t know about the others, but I’ll miss glass back.

  • Gambi

Is this the new Z range?

  • Me too bro

  • DBS

Let’s be honest. The Xperia X Performance is nothing more than the Z5+.
I just don’t see why they decided to confuse the branding even more.

That said, I like the metal back a lot more than the “frosted glass” on the Z5. I would still prefer the normal glass of the Z-Z3 though.

  • Misha Shevkun

Time to upgrate from Z2. So in love in Xperia X Performance

  • Drakomord

  • Leon

Do they have USB type C? It does not look like…

  • KzX

  • Serdar Aytamaner

I still prefer glass back. This new brushed metal comes second. Z5’s frosted glass which does not look like glass at all is the least attractive one.

  • Genta Aditya

i won’t miss the glossy glass back, but i’ll savor the frosted glass back on my Z5 while i can..
wont be buying X Perf nor Z6, probably waiting for a refreshed Kryo core since im already in S810

  • Abdul Ghani

after reading all ur comments before to be honest ur just a guy who want 100mp camera with dslr lens in xperia

  • Bruno

    It doesn’t

  • Altz
  • EQ

How many would you kill, 10, 100, 1000? SONY: “I would kill them all!”. Sony FTW!

  • Bruno

the S820 does 122k on antutu, it’s DOUBLE from the averages of the 810. The bests 810 did close to 70k. I’m still on S801 and i think its a worth upgrade

  • EQ

It’s probably to compensate for something else the clown wants 100MP lol..

  • Did you get the dimensions right? On Sony Mobile site it reads: 2.8 x 5.7 x 0.3 in. Which translates to about 71 x 145 x 7.6 mm. You wrote 8.7mm.

  • DBS

I would answer you at your low level but I rather report your comment and let XperiaBlog take care of it.

  • DBS

Nop. A decent camera worthy of the Sony brand would suffice ;)

  • Abdul Ghani

thats what u can do report and be a coward read ur comments camera camera in phone camera camera my god stop with that camera spamming

  • EQ

Cool story bro! You do so, little man!

  • DBS

I never report comments UNLESS they’re just gratuitous insults.
Also, in case you haven’t noticed, YOU were the one who talked about the camera here. It seems you’re the paranoid one ;)

  • Tom W

Why haven’t they put USB Type-C!!!!!????

  • Mario

Its not a replacement for the Z series. Just an iPhone competitor. Z series still the flagship.

  • En.Pasta.Tack

I wanna have XP in graphite black so badly my ass hurts.

  • Omarion07

    Nope it isn’t

  • Omarion07

Nope..I think the X performance will replace the Z6 compact since they both have comparable sizes.. XA and X will replace M series.. I doubt there’ll ever be C and E series. I also think Z6/ Z6 premium will be announced at IFA with new design, new camera sensor, and probably higher screen resolution!

  • Adair Rios

Am I missing something? In all articles related to the X Performance I have not read anything about 4K Recording. Does anyone know anything about that? I mean, the chipset is capable, the camera sensor is capable, even the M5 had it, and there is no mention of it even on the official Sony website for the XP.

  • Faisal Armand
  • EQ

He is just bitter that Sony is leading the way with their new line up. Dont mind him and his constant trolling at Xperia Blog, not even liking the Sony phones yet he cant leave this site becouse he fears the superiority of the Sony phones. He is just buttert about the situation and it is enjoyable!

  • Abdul Ghani who were thinking that samsung made their own camera hahahahahahahahahahahahah

  • Adair Rios

Probably because there is still no waterproof USB-C solution available and that is probably why the S7 has micro usb too. Just my guess.

  • Tom W

And Mediatek Pump Express Plus and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 – how does that work?

  • Drakomord

    Yes it is.

  • Abdul Ghani

    hahahahahah nice one

  • turco320

    Xperia W, Xperia X, Xperia Y (?). Xperia Z

  • Svnjay

    Is it aluminum or glass?

  • Ethan ‘blaze’ Parker

    Want Z6. :3

  • mountain

I don’t think its even a Z5+. Its more like a M5+ by the screen size.

Really love the new looks though, much more refreshing.

  • juan pablo londono

Mmmm sony will forget z5 soon they have a new toy… and we still waiting for android 6

  • mountain

Actually, usb-c is designed to be waterproof

  • Abdul Ghani

ummmmmmmmm hi long time so u got m5 now all phones camera are shit even z5 huh u owned z2 and z3 z3+ and z1 camera were shit to u now xperia x camera is bad against ur special Indonesian sony version m5 also coming to the point ur a blind boy or kid i guess because those superior auto shots are just amazing and u picked a shot which has some problem coming from a PROTOTYPE saying it looks like z1 hahahahha …………….i liked that u love m5 butttttttttt for fuck sake dont say ur only m5 is god rest are shit

  • Ailan Hidaz

    I have noticed that too

  • DBS

You’re so pathetic you probably believe what you write. Although your childish insecurities should be clear enough since you’re ridiculous to the point of having to upvote your own comments.
What a sad existence you must live…

  • Adair Rios

Oh, well then, I change my stance, this phones should’ve had USB-C ports, just for the sake of futureproofing, since they are probably going to be around the $500 price bracket, at least for the XP.

  • EQ

    I aint even reading!

  • DBS

The X Performance sure seems like it. It has a snapdragon 820 which is the successor to the snaptoaster 810 from the Z5. It has the same 5″ 1080p screen of the Z5. It has the same 23mp camera of the Z5. The same water proof rating. The same fingerprint scanner of the Z5. The same 3GB of RAM.

So the X Performance is definitely a Z phone in disguise. It has better internals than the Z5 Compact and the same internals of the regular Z5 but with a new and better processor.

  • Matt

Don’t forget laser beam with it lol

  • mike

Brushed metal is cheap and ugly

  • nfs2010

So is it a super mid-ranger or a flagship? Can’t tell without seeing the price tag!

  • Othmane Fettaka

why it doesn’t have FM radio :(

  • EQ

Hahahahaha! Might just tape a regular mobile phone to a DSLR. Problem solved!

  • kaostheory

Because most of us don’t want it. I want money spent on faster wifi/bt, custom dac, better speakers. C is last on my list as I have all the cables I need and don’t want to replace or remember adaptors. Nobody I know uses usb (phone) for anything except charging. I do a lot of media transfers and wifi is more convenient. Spend money where it’s needed. If you want an ever changing of expensive cables, buy an iPhone.

  • kaostheory

Maybe they can’t find a work around for Google Now. Currently fm doesn’t work when Now is on for any screen.

  • KzX

    Huh! Really? :-(

  • Ant Morgan

Has anybody worked out if they are micro USB or USB Type C – none of the specs seem to mention it.

  • Anonymous

Seems that Z series is over. X is the new flagship as per below video.

  • Matt

It won’t work, he need a small device. Preferably microscopic in size, so that he can fit his z3c as a dedicated music player

  • Altz

USB micro B based on the accessory charger: Quick Charger UCH12

  • “First of all, the Xperia X Performance is the only handset in the range that is IP68 certified for water and dust resistance” I can’t see the info for the IP standard on the sony mobile site

  • Mario

I hope not. Z series stands out. X series is just confortable.. I hope the Z series stays as a true top of the line phone. Even X Pro with a 5inch full hd screen cant do that even now, what about in 6 months.. That is why I hope and think the Z series will continue to go on. If X is the flagship than Sony is becoming OnePlus/Xiaomi/Lenovo and not a Samsung/LG/Apple competitor. This would be a step back, right?

  • Bennet lazardis

She is totally misguiding . Z series will be the flagship. This is a a polycarbonate (plastic) sides device.

  • Arda Akca

Brushed metal… What is this Samsung Omnia? I hope these are not New Z series because they look cheap as hell. Sony and frustration once again. Pffff.

  • M110

still prefer z5 premium due to larger screen size

  • impasse

finally, the replacement for the xperia zl and z3 i’ve been looking to just hope it actually makes it to the states before the gs8 and g6 are announced

idk why people are gonna miss the glass back, i like being able to use my phones without a case and NOT having to worry that the slightest accidental drop will shatter it completely

  • Chitti- The Robot

Why isn’t Sony stating anything about water-resistant ratings?

  • Wolf0491

They are clearly not the Z series. says midrange so I guess it is suppose to look cheaper

  • Vitor Silva

Now offer the new Z6 with the same design language except instead of having plastic sides use a unibody metal frame

  • Sharfeen

Using metal instead of fragile glass is a good decision the only thing that bothers me in Z SERIES.It will increase its durability and this metal back will also work as a heat sink, SONY at last you made my desired phone.

  • roeshak

Leading the way with their new line up? That’s just bull! If the X performance had the same edge 2edge display of the XA and , a better camera with OIS, then it could stand shoulder to shoulder with the others. As it is, it’s subpar!

  • mUSICA

z series will get 4 gb ram make no mistake an 64 gb internals with upgraded cam lense

  • DBS

Yes. The Z6 probably will have 4GB of RAM. I doubt the 64GB of internal storage though. With microSD support, so much is not needed.
As for the upgraded camera lense, the X P already has one.
Which is why I think the X P is a Z5+. It has the same or better internals than the normal Z5. The only thing it doesn’t have is waterproofing (or so it seems. I’ve read different reports on this particular feature).

  • mUSICA

did she just say its not waterproof????

  • EQ

The Z1+ lineup already has better camera than the competitors. You mean a Samsung AMOLED with pink blotches (#PinkGate), white balance that changes with time and brightness strenght and bad viewing angles? Nah it still needs to mature. On the papper it is perfect but in reality there are way to many lemons produced. I rather take a good IPS LCD over non-mature AMOLED tech with lots of problems. Then we have the waterproof factor, nice design, robust, made to last long time, updates for 24 months, great UI and no intrusive software like Touchwiz, good sound and functionality. Yep Z1+ lineup is superior!

  • dirtyKIMCHI

There is no mention of 4K in the whitepapers, but since it is the same sensor as the Z5 (not the M5 as that has a 21.5 MP Sensor), which can shoot 4K video, it’s a safe bet that the X Performance will also be able to do so.
Also, when the whitepaper gets updated to a second version, it will surely have that info.

    Z5 whitepaper:

  • EQ

Yeah it is sad that there are people that like to act as an “authority” and control what other people think and feel. You cant be to happy for a product else they chime in and trash talk X product with nonsense and pretty much never provides any visual proof nor proper comparisions. Just empty talk. And then they repeat the same nonsense over and over again and when busted tries to change the topic to something else. Pretty much the definition of a ‘troll’ and ‘armchair expert’. Atleast I see the trolls comments are all hidden due to moderation awaiting. Makes for a better atmosphere here now for some proper discussions! :-D

  • dirtyKIMCHI

Neither the Press Release, nor any of the whitepapers mention it.

  • Bashar

    I agree, good cal
    We’ve waited enough!

  • omg a high-end 5-inch display phone! Yeeesss!!! Can’t wait to see the camera samples.

  • Arda Akca

I do hope so. SD820 with thw latest camera and waterproof with a 699 euro price tag does not sound like a mid-range to me.

  • Wolf0491

Where did you get that price? Pricing was not announced.

  • Gary Ohanian
  • apolloa

They do, they make the Samsung Isocell sensor which they use in their phones as well as Sony sensors, some of their phones have BOTH sensors in them depending on what they had in stock at the time. So you and 5 others are wrong.

  • Gary Ohanian

    Me too :)

  • Gary Ohanian

For me, it’s everything I want. Fast processor, Full HD, finger print, good size, good camera. And the best thing for me is:

at last a touch cover that means I can dock in my car and still use Navigation with the cover on! That in itself is the best thing for me!

Only negative will be the lack of USB-C, but I’m fine with that.

    So excitied.

Because buyers like me will not be happy to have to carry one extra cable for no short term advantages?

Right now I have reversible micro usb 2.0 cables, and I have them for my cars, my work/home etc… I’ll have to buy so many new cables..

Not to mention the list of other devices I have that still use micro usb 2.0 such as:

    external battery charger
    torch light
    rx 100 camera
    a7 camera
    bicycle lights (front & rear)
    portable bluetooth speakers
    beoplay h8
    saturn pro bluetooth transmitter/receiver
    jogging iem

So yeah… I’m glad that phones are still using usb 2.0

Of course, this is just me

how is 5″ versus 4.6″ comparable? LoL

edit: not to mention the 140g vs 165g difference in weight

  • Arda Akca

  • JMonkeYJ

I have to admit I’m pretty excited the glass is gone. I can admit glass looks nice, but it’s just not practical.

  • JMonkeYJ

I wonder how good the speaker(s) are on the X Performance…my last Xperia was the Z2, also. I liked its front-facing speakers, but I found them lackluster.

  • Vincentius Phang

that would be because of the interaction the device have with other Sony device. Lets say the TV, Portable Speakers, Bluetoot headsets, etc etc. all still using USB 3.0

  • Faisal Armand

Hi there, long time no see! Thanks for the nice & honest input

    Words Play By Sony…Premium, Performance

  • Brandon Dean

The sides are plastic because the back is now aluminum. They made the sides plastic for the signal. In a way, its a better solution than some other aluminum phones, that have plastic seams going all over the place around the phone. I believe it is likely true that the X series will be replacing the Z series, since the specs for the XP basically are what a Z6 would have been.

  • Brandon Dean

The lower two phones are not waterproof, but the X Performance is waterproof.

  • Brandon Dean

I’m sure theres 4k video. The sensor and processor are only better than previous models, so I dont see why it wouldnt be there, probably an oversight in the whitepaper.

  • dko3tgk

Everything is good except why they didn’t make the body smaller? The top and bottom bezels are still huge. I had a Xperia ZL. 5.0 inch 1080p screen. But much smaller top and bottom bezels. 1/2 inch shorter size. Screen to body ratio of 75%!!. The X Performance has a sad ratio of 67%. a 5 inch screen can be the same body dimensions as the Z Compact, referring to the ZL. What is the need for the monstrous top and bottom bezels? Bring back the slim ZL top and bottom bezels and I’ll be 100% happy.
But with such big top and bottom bezels maybe I’ll see what the Z6 Compact looks like.

  • FYLegend21

Hmm Sony said it wasn’t actually certified IP68…

  • Osamah Nasser

Does the xperia x performance support quick charge 3.0

  • Lajos Márk Kovács

Goodbye Z family, hello X series!

    Must update, i’m not sad.

    (I have :Xperia Z, Z1C and Tablet Z)

  • Philip N

This is not a fair comparision she should be comparing the X performance not the X. The X performance as the 820 plus finger print recognition and is waterproof etc.

  • Timel

This is very disappointing, the overall design is so boring, I’m sick of those Sony’s big bezels, it specs is also too weak to be a flagship especially when compare to S7 or even Chinese phone like Xiaomi Mi5, X performance still dont have mind-blowing innovation to offer

Sony says X series is going to be their new start but all I see it’s just a big disappointed beginning.

  • [W]A[LF]O[R]

    RIP dear Sony

  • iosvsios

The 2nd source link of this very article does mention though and that is from Sony

No IP rating mentioned. Sony probably decided not to market it too much as water resistance after previous legal problems. Sad…

  • EQ

He got smoked! Look at the clowns messages, they are all hidden. His silicon enlarger fell off.
