Xperia MarshmallowSony Mobile has just published a very short video on the key changes brought about by Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The video highlights some of the native Marshmallow features such as granting permissions to apps, easier text editing and better sharing capabilities.

It also focuses on the new camera UI, being able to adjust shots in real time and swiping to switch shooting modes. This new Camera 2.0.0 app was actually introduced last November so it’s not a new feature in Marshmallow. The video also shows the easy in-app access to stickers within the Xperia Messaging app. You can check it out below.

  • Ender Ceylan

    But what’s “Xperia v.2”?

  • Gästen med gesten

    looks promising _=)

  • Sampahio Damaceno

More of the same. Why not What’s New UI?

  • KubsiJack

Kidding ? It’s the same on Lollipop. Nothing changed, except the Home Launcher. Lol

  • DIsChaos

Sony xperia Fr have answer me on Twitter they said it’s coming soon on xperia z2

  • HypeZ

still waiting for MM update on z5c in italy

  • TharakaKS

    Me too

  • Marinko Agic

Hi dont ask about Z2!He ask What is Xperia v2 in 6.0!

  • IAM BLKJ3ZUS

You would think Sony users are horrible I had a nexus 6p and marshmallow never was hugely different from lollipop. The big change are suppose to be android N every oem marshmallow update is more about permissions and now on Tap. Currently using a 950xl, z5 and 5x. People should be happy Sony had updated more phones to marshmallow than the rest of the oems in one day.

  • Alvin

yeah, and except stickers, except doze, except apps optimisation, except everything.

  • fried_egg

I want my Z5 to be a bit more zippy through the menu flipping… i also hate the way you can delete apps by just holding the screen (the previous way on my older lollipop via a left swipe of the app menu stopped accidental entry to delete apps. with 5.1.1 by just holding the phone and have fingers touch the screen on the edges you can suddenly be about to delete apps)

  • Alvin

well sony is ahead on updates this time, than most of others, s6 and note 5, m9, g4 didn’t even get it yet

    what is xperia v2 btw?

  • Karlos Londoño

    It’s “Introduction to Xperia” v.2

  • Sadman Khan

And MUCH MUCH MUCH faster. That’s what’s important. And less heat

  • Sadman Khan

    Exactly

  • Sadman Khan

The phone will fly. That’s the most important feature

  • KubsiJack

Didn’t get it yet. Right. It got M a month ago,

  • MixoMaxoViper

And there is no Stamina anymore….

  • MixoMaxoViper

    Who needs stickers?

  • SONY only

    Thank you sony

  • Alvin

and stamina will be back soon

  • Chuck

I hope Marshmallow fixes my Z2’s bugs. I’m tired of small apps resetting when I rotate the screen and the wildly inconsistent battery life.

  • Chuck

What about Ultra Stamina? Is that gone too?

  • Robert Dunn

That’s because Marshmallow already has its own version of Stamina mode called “Doze”, but Sony will bring it back in the future…it’s just that Google mandated that OEMs cannot remove Doze.

    http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/10/19/google-will-require-oems-to-include-unmodified-doze-mode-in-android-6-0/

  • BritinSA

I was hoping to be able to define my SD card as expanded memory. Very disappointed that Sony is following the common herd on this one.

At least give users the option (even via the Developer mode) with any warnings they want. We’re not all stupid end users / customers…

  • Alvin

i think we talked about what’s changed there, not who needs it..?

  • They are probably talking about the Ui and the new home screen… But since is “introduction Xperia v2”,probably we will know more on the 60.1

  • Abhinav Singh

    Bug in this update.
Unable to use small apps as navigation button overlaps them making them nt responsive. :(

  • Abhinav Singh

    Specially missing Stamina mode :(

  • theskig

    So you can’t launch them?
Oh, this is a serious answer to the turn screen-reset bug, but not as I expected :)

  • Abhinav Singh

    ya can’t touch them

  • Abhinav Singh

as you can see in the pic
Home button layer is above So can’t use it.

  • Bennder

But now you have doze. Doze is superior to stamina. :)

  • Abhinav Singh

Can plse you temme hw to use?
    I didn’t find

  • theskig

    Yes I see, that’s a bad thing.
BTW I noticed you have a Dual version. Do you still have the “double tap” bug when tapping a phone number and SIM selection popup doesn’t come out?
Sorry but on my Z5p I don’t have updates notification yet.

  • Abhinav Singh

    No
    No bugs there :)

  • theskig

I was also curious to find out if they fixed the bug ’cause I use Timer quite often.
But, according to a user up here:
“Unable to use small apps as navigation button overlaps them making them not responsive. :(”
So it seems they “solved” the bug in a brutal way :)

  • theskig

    Good, thanks for the infos!

  • Malcolm

You don’t have to do anything, it’s always working.

  • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

Hoopefully Z2 family is getting its update soon, my Tablet Z2 is thirsty for dat Marshmallow sweetness

  • theskig

Is there a “white list” for apps?

  • Abhinav Singh

    Okay Thanks :)

  • theskig

“Yes” or “No” was faster to write :)

  • James Bray

Wait this isn’t a thing?! I CONSTANTLY have a “Internal Storage is 75% Full” error on my phone, even though I have 50gb free on an SD card. I was so excited about the new storage options in Marshmallow!

  • Thitigorn Jiruttigorn

Did you try clear data in Xperia Home ?

  • Abhinav Singh

    No
    How to do that?

  • Thitigorn Jiruttigorn

Settings>apps then click the 3 dots on top right>Show system> search for Xperia Home >Storage > Clear Data. Ps. you have to rearrange all the icon on your home screen
I’m not sure it will help you, If it’s not I’m apologize in advance.

  • Abhinav Singh

    It doesn’t work :(

  • Thitigorn Jiruttigorn

Really sorry. The best solution is of course Factory reset but It’s take much effort backup and restore datas. The problem is probably System UI, you can do same method but since I’ve never done it before I don’t know the risk (but probably none.) If you really want to fix the problem I suggest to use Helium app for backing up your apps. It works well.

    Hope you find the way.

  • Aldi Wan Kenobi

They will bring back Stamina mode “later in the year” through another update. For now, you have the “Doze” feature, which I hear works very similar, if not better, than Stamina.

  • It’s because of your internal memory, not the SD (the 75% notification).

  • BGDoesGaming

where is my marshmallow for xperia S sony!(sarcasm) (yes i still use xperia s as my daily driver since its been out)

  • Mario

Doze achieves results like Stamina mode, but in a different, more flexible way. AppStandby litterally means StaminaMode. So I dont think Stamina Mode is coming back, it’s already here.

  • Mario

I like the way they are making software really a priority now.. still dont like the X series replacing Z series, but they made up for some of the blue feelings I had :D

And there is so much more to do.. so dont hold your breath just now.

  • Is WiFi calling in Marshmallow compatible with any carrier that offers it, like T-Mobile US?

  • joe

for the small apps you can fix it by starting the device on safe mode use the app once than restart your device and it’s done

  • Malcolm

Yes! It’s in the power settings.

  • joe

go to safe mode use it once than restart the device and it will work fine

  • Michael Adu-Yeboah

    swipe to search apps??
    voice assist??

    android backup….well well well

  • Michael Adu-Yeboah

me too the same 75% damn…..hope there come a solution for us with this adoptable solution…please mehhn…proud z2 user

  • KzX

My gf love stickers. I need them.

  • Abhinav Singh

    Thank You so much
    This worked

Now i m able to use them :)

  • SM

    err …6.0.1

  • Musharab

Coming Soon means couple of Months

  • Darren Johnstone

    xperia v2?

  • Sorry ahaha my bad

  • WHATTHE

STAMINA is better, it starts to work after 15 min of closed screen while doze starts afer 60 min

  • mike

still does not fix email push delay issue. still get annoying notification sound during call.

  • Kaarthikeyan Swaminathan

If I ever get to meet you, i’d give u a tight kisss. U saved me from getting insane. I was handicap without the small apps.

  • joe

    you’re welcome.

  • joe

    happy to help.

  • azzido

    Enriched calling v2.1? What’s that?

  • azzido

New weather app? I assume it is the same one we already have as well as camera?

  • azzido

they should update STAMINA to allow user to choose when do you want to start working, sometimes I would like to start immediately, after a minute at least and not 15mins :/

  • azzido

Sony should go to court as Google copied its STAMINA solution.
    $$$!

  • Brendan Charles

Still waiting here in Canada… Sony Mobile Canada on Facebook told me there will an update ‘Soon.” God, it’s going to be a couple months, isn’t it?

  • Michael Kelly

It’s not worth the wait. All new features from Google ain’t inside the update.
At least not in the Z5 version!
No mount sd as internal storage, stamina has been taken out. The cam app has not changed on the Z5 Noticeably.
The ui is exactly the same… There are like 3 noticeable SMALL changes that don’t even affect maybe 80% of the users.
Worst update fail ever from Sony! And they took 5 months for it

Would be cool if the stickers had the PlayStation stickers

  • Benjamin Levy

Before doing a Factory Reset, try clearing the cache.

  • Kabuto Kouji

yeahhh Enriched calling v2.1 !!! …wait . what the heck is that!!!???

  • Kabuto Kouji

someone with the update.. please tell us what the hell does that mean and the enriched calling v2?? WTF?

  • Kabuto Kouji

yeah my z2 is thirsty for ….swipe to search apps
voice assist whatever that means!! and …oh yes and voice assist too!!

  • Lee Jia Hui

Why they didn’t explain what are those new+updated features at the end of the video??==

  • Deki

I don’t see that much difference right now. I guess there will be something more coming.

    Still on my Z1 and I don’t think to replace it right now… I don’t know why… :O

  • theskig

Thanks for help! I also posted on the official Sony forum (and I think also XDA) but looked they’re still waiting for a solution.

  • bluestreak_v

Well, apparently expandable storage is in Sony’s marshmallow concept. I would take this as a strong sign that it would appear in a future update.

    See the screenshots here:
    http://www.xperiablog.net/2016/03/01/sonys-marshmallow-android-concept-is-our-favourite-xperia-software-to-date/

  • Mario

But stamina stays on forever and cuts all Internet traffic where as doze let’s in Google push enabled notifications.. There are many differences, the end results are similar. And doze is far more flexible or advanced if you will.

  • RJKMadison

I am wondering about this as well.

  • Samuel

    Second worst “Update” ever.

  • Samuel

I said it was the second worst updater ever. I had a mini pro. When ICS came out it was so buggy that it bootlooped just by looking at it. Couldn’t even use it as a PHONE.

  • Sampahio Damaceno

Maybe. Maybe not. If this is the most important feature so Sony should use AOSP without any mod. C’mon man, this is Sony, not Nexus. What’s New UI has a great look and I sure its adoption will not compromise the system performance.

  • webuser.my

There is a small space directly above the navigation buttons where you can still touch/launch it. Not easy, but at least still accessible.

  • jag

swipe down in home screen to search for apps

  • AudioAw

I actually find stamina mode more effective. Doze only kicks in when your phone is stationary and idle for a long period of time. Which means it won’t activate if you keep your phone in your pocket and you’re moving around.

  • iia3ezu

    “New sticker store”
Yeah, maybe Sony should get out of the mobile business and focus on artistic hobbies, making stickers and themes etc.

    “New weather app”
This better not be baked into Android. I have my own weather app, no need for inferior crap.

    “Enhanced Lifelog”
After seeing the new Lifelog app icon (more like the OkCupid dating app icon), I highly doubt the ‘enhanced’ bit.

    “Video calling” and “wifi calling”
Yeah, we obviously couldn’t do this previously with various chat apps. /s

    “Improved Movie creator”
Another one that’s probably baked into Android.

    “Improved Sketch”
    Improved? Really?

    ————-

I think why the Marshmallow update took so long to arrive was because Sony spent most of the time baking its crap into the Android. Now that it has arrived, please enjoy the turd sandwich.

  • jag

    great idea!!!

  • Arch9

    Does this update enable Camera2Api?

  • hansip

To update all Z5 and Z4 generation at the same time is no easy feat. They need to debug each devices and test all the devices thoroughly. Plus Stamina Mode re-write for Marshmallow take their time too much, plus the Small App Framework which might be doesn’t play nice with Marshmallow restriction about floating app.

  • Sadman Khan

You have no idea how shitty the Z5 series was on lollipop. This is why we love this update even with STAMINA missing and shit. The first thing we needed was a performance fix and we got it. This is how a flagship should perform

  • Sadman Khan

Introduction to xperia is an app. Now we have version 2 of it :’D

  • Sadman Khan

Introduction To Xperia is an app. Now they relwased version 2 of it.

  • jamie evans

When is it rolling in Z5 COMPACT?

  • Rameyuk

Somehow there’s no way to enable VoLTE.. Kind of a deal breaker to me.. But I don’t want to go back to lollipop either. Anyone else facing the same situation? I use the Australia firmware on my Z5 Premium.

  • joe

yes i posted too on Sony official forum but i forget XDA good you remember.

  • I feel like the brightness and color sliders should be always visible given how often images need to be re-calibrated in auto mode. And to take it one step further, a pinch or sliding gesture assigned to those parameters would be the ideal solution to take the best photos every time.

  • MiladKhalily

    Which theme is it ?

  • MiladKhalily

    Which theme is it??

  • Khillo81

Good question! Forgot about that. It’s a cool feature for when the phone is dying and there’s no juice in sight. Reminds me of the good old days before smart phones. I hope it’s still there…

Invitation was sent yesterday and the update was released today along with g+ community invitation.

By the way, lots of new stuff, new home, new camera app from z5, this is going to be fun .

Mi dispiace che non sei stato selezionato, io comunque mi sono iscritto il giorno stesso che è uscita l’app Xperia beta sul play store.

  • Haziq Hasnol Zam Zam

I did this method.. The layout was fixed but only temporarily.. Minutes after usage it gets back to the buggy layout again.. Can you confirm this ??

  • MixoMaxoViper

    It has the worst updates…

  • Wow! More than 1GB

  • joe

i don’t use it for a long period i just use it for 4 times a day and each time is about 2 to 3 minutes and no problem .It’s the second day after fixing and it’s ok for me i’m using Z5 Compact .

  • Gertrudes, a Lhama

Hey, did you use the Concept version of 6.0? If so, can you compare performance on both softwares?

If not, how is the overall speed compared to Lollpop? I used concept software and the speed difference is HUGE. It feels like the phone has got an upgrade.

  • Nick Digenis

No but apps like “Manual Camera” work just fine, the only thing missing is raw support, every other thing works (shutter speed, white balance, etc. )

  • Sampahio Damaceno

Then Sony have to stop improving the software?

  • Haziq Hasnol Zam Zam

My bad.. The first time I boot into safe mode I didn’t launch any small app.. I simply hit recent apps button to see the layout fix.. Launched a small app the second time and now it’s fixed.. Thank you.. =)

  • Sadman Khan

AOSP without mods might not be the fastest. It really depends on the OEM. Moto X Force and all aren’t exactly very fast whereas the Nexuses are. At the end of the day, it depends on the company itself and whether they can do a good job at it. Adoptable storage has its issues and plus points. It is there on 6.0.1 concept firmware and we might get it with that update. Sony did improve their software. There were major performance issues and they fixed it and that was a very welcome thing. Never said that they have to stop improving

  • Sampahio Damaceno

OK. I believe it is harder to fix the performance than adopt the UI. One thing does not exclude the other. I think we are talking what we expect, maybe both will delivered sometime at next releases.

  • Josué Flores

Anyone use Messaging App!?? Is waste useless share pics for this option!!!

  • Velexas

Cool new PETITION asking for SONY for faster updates, SD card as internal storage and to keep the Xperia Z line!!! http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/lets-go-sony

  • hansip

Do you mind explaining the issue? What do you mean by resetting? Is it gone from the screen? Cause i have issue with my wife’s Xperia Z3 Compact where Small apps will be gone on screen turn off then on.

  • hansip

Do you have source for that? I’d like to read about it.

  • Chuck

Say you want to calculate something in the Calculator Small App. You type in the numbers, press =, you get the result. Then you rotate the screen, and the result is gone. Same happens to the timer.

  • Tibor Hornyák

hi guys.. there is no manual camera controls like shutter speed control???????

    thx?

  • hansip

Oh i see, i can tell you that such issue is unfortunately due to Sony’s dev choice to let the app to restart on screen rotate just like an activity. My small apps doesn’t do any restart because i thought small apps doesn’t have to restart to change its layout like activity. So there’s your answer.

  • Demone Horobi

Please kindly provide a feedback and impressions especially about the new camera app from z5 (are you sure it will integrated? I hadn’t read that info from anywhere). I’m not really proud of the quality of the photo taken from the z3 camera (even on manual mode) : .

  • Emma

Where do I find the settings for the Doze mode?

  • I have an Xperia C4, still in Android 5.0…

  • Aldi Wan Kenobi

From what I read, it is a Marshmallow built-in feature, the Doze mode is always on and invisible to the end user. You will not see it anywhere in the Android settings.

  • Brick

Camera quality seems identical to me. The new interface is faster and works well.

Overall the firmware is very nice and there are many little improvements all over such as do not disturb toggle, percentage in calculator app, new home which is much better than before, new weather app, new photo editor with a million effects, new icons all over and every other improvement from M.

Stamina is missing though which is a shame if you ask me.

Overall system feels faster and more responsive than before. So far it’s a definite improvement over 5.1.

  • Brick

I did not use concept as Italy was not allowed to take part in it. Overall the system does feel noticeably faster and more responsive but I wouldn’t call it huge as I was already happy with speed on 5.1. There are also very few bugs, and even then this could easily be definitive software. When I had the galaxy s4 Samsung released firmwares that were much worse or flat out unusable. I also had no issue updating and it kept all my apps and settings. Had some issues with WhatsApp but a reinstall fixed it. The team is responding fast to bug reports, we found issues with Bluetooth streaming and they already fixed it, same with a couple other bugs that were found. Only really annoying bug, for some reason poweramp doesn’t read the license anymore. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c4756e2b24db901976da648d6610368f543c220cbffc2b7653a88ca03aefcd00.jpg

  • Bashar

I’m pretty interested in trying windows 10 phone, how do you find it so far?

  • IAM BLKJ3ZUS

Here is my honest opinion. Using my 950xl feels cool because it runs together with windows 10 itself. I enjoy switching from my Surface pro 4 to the Lumia 950xl and then using the free dock on the Tv to watch movies which is amazing. My problem is the layout of the tiles can drive me crazy, what I mean is when you set wallpapers sometime you can’t even see them because the tiles take over everything and is annoying! Also the way the tiles drop down when grouped together is really not nice I wish it had the same style as the z5. The app problem doesn’t bother me since I have multiple phones, but as time goes by I notice the apps are slowly making there way to universal world of windows 10.The last annoying little thing is loading times are horrible on apps that are not Microsoft own apps and I have no idea why. If you can deal with those things a look past them as I do everyday you will enjoy Windows 10 phone. Best thing would be to by a cheap 650 or 640 and test the rivers. Sorry for long response. I do think that if this Surface Phone is true, I think Microsoft might just pull an upset like their doing with the Surface line to Android Tablets.
