Brazilian photographer let loose with the Xperia X

by XB on 7th April 2016

in Imaging, Videos, Xperia X series

pic09Sony recently teamed up with Brazilian visual artist Rafael Mantesso to help showcase the upcoming Xperia X smartphone. Armed with the phone, Mantesso explored the beautiful city of Barcelona accompanied by six furry friends. Mantesso captures photos and blends these with his own illustrations, this inspiration started around three years ago when pictures of his English Bull Terrier called Jimmy Choo went viral following his divorce.

One of the new Xperia X features demoed in the video below is Predictive Hybrid Autofocus, which Mantesso used to help keep his dogs in focus whilst running around. “It can be extremely challenging capturing photos of one animal, let alone six, but I was really surprised at how easy it was to get great shots of the dogs, even as they wriggled about and refused to sit still! The autofocus on Xperia X anticipated their movement and meant the images always came out without any blur,” said Rafael. Check out some of his Xperia X images below.

Thanks dragonsneeze and Diogo!

at least they tried to market their phones :”)

i hope this time the shots in commercials looks just like how it performs in real life.

  • Saad Khan

    Looks good.

  • Matt

Looks good, alot better than my z3

  • Nidou Xperia™

i agree with you… what on papers should be the same what on the handset when utilizing it!

  • dragonsneeze

    You are welcome XB :)
And I think the shots look good, only the dusk scene is low res. So it’s still better to use downsample mode in those situations. I suppose and Sony didn’t inform the artist about it. Maybe next Superior Auto could warn about that or better take both high res and downsampled photos at the same time.

  • RockStar2005

Do you use manual mode on your Z3 or superior auto?

I had the Z3 for a while and used manual mode. Pics always came out better. I am excited about the Xperia X Performance though!! I got the Samsung Galaxy S7 now but don’t really like it. Wanna go back to Sony again this June when X Perf is finally released.

  • Raj Singh

These images look promising for the Xperia X.

  • Alvin

me too. i don’t get the like for galaxy s6/s7 in all aspects. okay the camera is good, but in low light and video, my z3 could do even better (based on my experiences)

  • RockStar2005

Yeah it’s possible. The Note 5 might’ve had a better camera b/c I pitted my Z3 against my cousin’s Note 5 last Dec and his pic did come out A LIL better. The speaker on the S7 is awful. I hate physical home buttons too, and not having TWO speakers in front blow (HTC, if rumors are true, was stupid to get rid of that feature too). I am COUNTING THE DAYS until Xperia X Performance is released. lol

I had the Z3 for a year and a half and it was my all-time FAV phone! HTC One M8 was a close second. I have to get X Perf unlocked and not through carrier, which I don’t like, but whatever. lol

So you use Manual or Auto?

  • Matt

i use both. more often the automatic mode. Because im lazy lol.
most of the photos will be uploaded to instagram anyways sooo yeah.

oh you got the s7? i can say the camera on it is better (sharpness wise, aand low light) , if its june, i would suggest you to wait a little bit more until the second release of xperia devices :D it will be awesome !

  • Bashar Shehab

OMG! I didn’t notice any noisy part of any image here!! I can’t believe, did Sony do it? Finally?

    I’m excited for DxOMark review..

  • mUSICA

Hope The X Series Turn Things For Sony

  • RockStar2005

    lol I C. Ok.

Yeah I did. It’s (S7) really nice in a lot of ways, for sure the camera, but overall I’m not that crazy about it. Samsung phones and I just don’t seem to “click” like I do with Sony phones. lol I had the S5 2 years ago for like 4 days and I couldn’t stand it. Last 2 days I didn’t even touch it, was using my LG G2 still. lol Then I traded it for the HTC One M8, which I loved but then Z3 came out and I had to have it. lol

Wait for the second release?? Dude, I can BARELY wait ’til June as it is! lol I love Sony, but they are so dumb sometimes. They announced the Xperia X series in February like EVERYONE else did their phones, but the rest have already either put out their phones or are releasing them by the end of this month. Why the F does Sony, who probably won’t even sell as many phones as Samsung will (at least here in the U.S.), need ’til f’in’ JUNE to release them? It can be really frustrating dealing with them. lol And who knows if the rumors are true if the second release will come out 6 mos from now or in 1 year? (Rumor is they’re moving to annual releases, but that’s not confirmed as of yet.)

But yeah, the speaker sux on the S7. Drum sounds sound like someone’s shooting a laser gun. lol The screen is very nice (2K), but the brightness blows! In heavy sunlight even at brightest setting (auto or manual) I can hardly see the screen at all. A video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=g5SJq-Jag20&app=desktop , watch at least 3:35 – 4:25) I saw on YouTube compared Xperia X’s screen to Z5’s, and X’s was WAY brighter at highest setting and more color accurate too. When connecting S7 for music via its Micro USB port (to my Oppo HA-2 amp/DAC https://www.oppodigital.com/headphone-amplifier-ha-2/ , which connects to my headphones), the S7 hiccups somewhat often while I’m listening to music. My Z3 RARELY ever did that. Very annoying. Also, I swear, although it does download very fast, when I’m shifting around on the home screen, I feel like my Z3 might’ve been faster? lol In a lot of ways it’s a great phone, but I don’t want it any longer. It’ll be a LONG 2 months lol…………………

  • Dimitrije Dk

I see they’re still using the same shit sensor… No depth, images look flat, and alot of fuzzy mushiness.

  • Brian De Guzman

So when will they “let loose” this device into market?

  • Afzal Zainal Rddz

No depth?? What do you expect from a small sensor even with F1.7 with that range? you wont see any diff of depth compared with f2.0 with wide lens. Unless you talking about dynamic range.

  • Solano89

Fortunately won’t – 1. only 5″ screen and the trend is 5,2″ or even 5,5″; 2. only 3Gb of RAM and all the flagships for 2016 have 4Gb (a lot of people will look at this); 3. only full HD screen (a lot of people look at this aspect to); 4. no FM radio (stupid); 5. small battery (really don’t believe in a extraordinary optimization); 6. no compact for those who don’t need 5″ screen; 7. poor marketing and the SONY phones do not enter in the offer list of major carriers; 8. they are coming to late on the market (summer and they were announced in February…); 9. everyone has the opinion that SONY is always late with updates and everything so they think 2 to buy or NOT; 10. the name change Z to X, the good design and the durability doesn’t count when you have 9 major flops, sad thing!

  • Alvin

If I am too lazy, I use Auto, but most of the time, I use Manual with 20.7 MP

  • RockStar2005

Oh ok. I just realized you’re a different guy than the one (Matt) who responded to me earlier. Oops! lol

I see ok. Manual is better, noticeably better IMO. If interested respond back and I’ll post my Z3 Manual Camera Settings. You will like it, if you use it. lol

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Manual and use Scenes if can, Low light if you have shaky hands try the self-timer thing, it helps you to avoid those shakes. Close subjects at night try to use exposure(decrease it) so you get nice focused shots with dark corners like vignetting. I wish they’d given Raw so we can just edit the shit out of it :P

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Can’t wait till summer. It’s weird how all other phones are released yet this was announced and it was not released.
BTW one bad thing is that this is a 32GB model but it only got 17GB accessible?

  • Dean Newell

Same shit sensor? The sensor is great. It’s Sony’s processing that usually sucks. The sensor is always top notch.

  • Matt

Man,you don’t know how glad I am to read your comment ,, meanwhile alot of people here thinks that xperia is a camera brand . . and always moo mooing it’s photo taking capabilities.

People does not realise it’s the complete package that counts .

I’ve used a couple of Samsung devices in the past , and I hated them. !ainly because of touchwizz and flashy feature no one using . after jumping to xperia z3 , the experience is just so polished .

  • Alvin

    alright:)

  • roeshak

Sony mobile and soft photos. When will they learn, the shaper the better.

  • SirDigby ChickenCaesar

    Don’t believe the hype.

  • Tim Rox Westerholm

Can’t wait to test the X Performance! :D

  • DarkMaster

You are to negative about everything and also misinformed about the specs… I like 5” and it’s perfect size for me… I still remember first Xperia Z that had also 5” display the best size in my opinion….also it’s got FM radio, and there is no need for 4gb of RAM since it uses FHD so 3gb is more than enough.
I don’t want QHD !!! because it has impact on performance and battery life while giving no advantage at all over FHD. (higher resolution on the phone than 1080p is unnecessary and you cant spot any difference unless it’s UHD.
regarding the battery it still remains to be seen how good Qnovo tech is.
Sony is best phone camera check DXOMARK . Late with apdates ? only compared to nexus devices…they are probably decided to put it later on market because it would get in the way of the Z5…. I only agree with you about poor marketing Sony has and is also targeted from paid trolls to be bashed.

  • AllanKafka

People in the Android world compare specs, so you can like 3GB and FHD as much as you want, but they are not good specs for competing against flagships. It might as well be DOA if they don’t make a proper flagship-specced phone. Sony has to realise it’s not Apple…
    PS I have a Z5.

  • kaostheory

Where’s the proof on the radio. Everything I’ve read is it’s not there. Not sure about mhl either.

  • dragonsneeze

    1) S7 has 5.1 and iP has 4.7 they sell well. For 5.5 lovers there’s Z5P
    2) It’s full HD and has better ram management. Even S7 does reload apps after a measly 8 apps. So yay for 4 gigs I guess.
    3) Please! A lot of people don’t even know what exactly QHD is.
    4) is this 2006?
    5) agree but we’ll see how well it performs
    6) I thought the trend was 5.2-5.5 and compacts come once a year there’s still time
    7) Z line does in my country can’t talk about other markets.
    8) It’s not the release date it’s the announcement date that was weird. Hopefully price will be readjusted before release.
    9) All I hear is that they take good care of their flags. Late is always better than never.
    10) It’s crystal clear that the new X line is not what Z was about. It’s a more simplistic take.
Saving my judgement for after the release

Sony Xperia Z3 (Manual Mode) Camera Settings

    Resolution: 15.5 MP (or 20.7 for 4:3)

    Focus mode: Face detection

    ISO: Auto

    Metering: Face

Nighttime Flash: Red Eye (Tell people before you take the shot that it will flash twice. DON’T say anything else besides “TWO flashes” while showing your 2 front fingers as you say it. Or “It’ll flash twice.” Anything else will lose their attention. lol) Or, if Red Eye still produces pics with “red eye”, switch to Auto immediately. (IF flash just isn’t working, day or night, just turn it off.)

Daytime Flash: Whether people are involved or not, enable “Fill Flash”. It’s a lighter version of Flash. (Why Fill Flash? Compare these 2 pics….. 1) Without Fill: http://cdn3.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2704399359_9b254843a9_z.jpg 2) With Fill: http://cdn3.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2704398815_e1f6a9d3b0_z.jpg

EV (Exposure Value): -1 (you can adjust b/t 0 and -2 if you’d like) Higher makes the surrounding lighting brighter, lower makes the surrounding light darker.

WB (White Balance): Auto (except under natural ((day)) light, then use sunny or cloudy option/icon depending on current conditions)

Important Note: You can make Manual Mode (MM) your default setting by simply ALWAYS using the stock camera app to start the camera up, NOT the dedicated camera button on the side of phone. The dedicated camera button will always bring up Auto Mode, which you don’t want. Just make sure you use the camera app to first go into Manual Mode, apply my settings above (which will save them for next time), then exit out. The next time you tap on the camera app, it will take you to where you left off………… in Manual Mode.

More non-people pics: For nighttime outdoor pics with little to no light: Switch to 8 MPs in MM, and select “High (ISO) Sensitivity” under Scenes, no flash. (Night Scene mode for light trails: Be warned it uses a very slow shutter so you’ll need to hold steady by resting your shoulders against your body or supporting the camera against something. It uses low ISO and slow shutter to produce very high quality photos with an artistic flair. Try it out on a busy street at night.)

  • RockStar2005

What in my comment specifically did you like so much? lol

Yeah it’s an incredible phone and camera combo, period. I don’t think OIS is all that important, but I don’t get why Sony doesn’t just include it in their Xperia cameras when the other companies that use its camera sensors like Samsung, Apple and HTC ALL have OIS included. If Samsung is using a Sony camera sensor, then why do their pics look slightly better?? I’m hoping that the Xperia X Performance’s camera will finally level that playing field. I think if Sony’s Xperia cameras start getting rated higher than all others, even in AUTO mode, they may start selling A LOT more phones here in the U.S. It’s just another thing Sony does wrong…….. they make IMO the BEST phone (with exception to camera, THUS far), but their way of marketing it needs MUCH work. Get ALL four major carriers involved, add OIS to the camera and make Auto work better, no more stupid ass delays in releasing them, and start doing ads for them that aren’t JUST limited to YouTube. lol I mean, they’re not some small company, they’re SONY! Get some big actors to advertise your phones……….George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence for example. The last 2 ALREADY WORK for Sony! lol I mean, they’ve both done movies for them in recent years. Putting out ads with actors like these in my mind would be a GAME CHANGER. If Sony Mobile doesn’t have the money to pay that, then the other subcompanies of Sony should chip in. If Sony Mobile succeeds, then EVERYONE in the company wins because it makes the Sony name stronger.

Yeah TouchWiz was the worst right?! lol It’s MUCH MUCH better now, but I still feel that Sony and HTC’s UI are more refined and simpler to use (in a good way). The S7’s Settings menu is more organized than in the past, but I STILL feel a bit confused by it at times. Sony’s and HTC’s was/is just easier to find things in. Yeah “polished” is a good description for Sony. Some of the Samsung features are cool, like Samsung Pay and the wireless charging, but I agree that as cool as they are, they are still more gimmicks. Sony and HTC have that Smart Call Handling feature, which kinda is a gimmick, but I find it to be really nice to have and miss it right now. But I’ll get it back in June!! lol

  • RockStar2005

Ok cool, thanks! I don’t have the Z3 anymore but that’s good advice! I will get the Xperia X Performance when it comes out in June though. I think they’re saying the Auto camera has been improved, hopefully. If not, I’ll still happily use the Manual Mode camera. (See my post on this page regarding Z3 Manual Mode Camera Settings if interested.)

  • InspectorGadget80

Actually their only problem is Sony won’t spend money on mass marketing here in the u.s. Which will help drive their sales but the the company is so blind sided they won’t market enough here in the u.s.

X Performance it’s not announced as flagship! maybe it will become at some point in future but right now at this moment Sony still advertise Z5 as their flagship.
Sony has every right to be proud and Apple is the one that copied their products many years before and even sometimes today…will they sell good or not it remains to be seen but I believe people at Sony knows much better than both you and me how to make profit.
I’m also Z5 owner and more than satisfied with it and what I really want to see is something like Xenon flash, led flash on the front camera, wireless charging(not that I much care about it but Sony has to adopt it to stay in the game),IR blaster (again it’s not that I need it but many people demand it and they are in right),64bg base version like in dual sim case and make available 128gb version to.

  • AllanKafka

I agree that probably people at Sony know how to make profit. I just hope they aim at profit in the mid-long term rather than just in the short term, as I think those are not totally compatible.
Let’s see what they do with the “Premium” line. I can fathom an X Premium being announced with everything spec lovers want later during the year in order not to slow down sales of the Z5 Premium…
I would like to see the improvements you talk about as well, but I’d trade flash for a slightly larger sensor and/or OIS. :)

  • theskig

No FM radio? Are you sure?

  • Nidou Xperia™

thank you, but even though I’m a sony lover I should say the truth that I always look forward to see Sony comes first and #1 in everything like, performance, selling…etc and I’d criticize what they lacks to improve the user experience and to make us more in love with such great product and brand!

  • DarkMaster

    it’s false. confirmed !

  • Alex Norris

I hope that Sony-mobile, will no longer make mistakes that we have seen. Maybe the new X line will be really different, and different not only in words as it usually happens in Sony!

  • Alex Norris

    Timel, it`s fake comparisons.

  • Solano89

OK let’s see, the way to get a hit phone that kicks ass you need a phone that is well built, sexy looking and durable (that is a SONY specialty, unfortunately not many people see this). Beside that you need a spec list which goes with the trend and in this case you need a 4Gb RAM, a better display, even when some of us know that it’s not needed (I agree with you in the matter of RAM and display). The size of the display is important to, I prefer 5,2 or 5,5 inch so for me a 5 inch er is a no-go; my wife is a huge compact lover, that means 4,5-4,7″ and no more (and the compact line is a knocker in it’s segment- why not to produce it?). I know about DxOMark and the statistics from there – SONY has good cameras but there is still place to do something better! About the radio we will see, gadgets.ndtv.com is one site and maybe they just put “Radio – Yes” because they where used to the fact that every SONY phone has a Radio (X10 was without and I had that phone :D). So bottom line – why make 3 identical phones in screen size? OK I understand that they will have different spec sheet and price tag… but why? Do it with the same spec list (the best) in 3 different screen size and release it on the market instantly do the right thing with the marketing/ promotion stuff and the phones will sell (plus one SoC used one 3 phones means easier updates and faster ones)! And rethink the market strategy because as you said X Performance would complicate things for Z5 on the market, release a phone line / year maybe?! SONY is the best but as a fan it’s annoying to see that they bullshit things and I’m waiting for that knocker phone that kicks iCrap’s and samSUCK’s ass!

  • Bro, you should have a look at Xperia M5

I have Xperia M5 and its camera completely destroyed Z2, Z3, and Z5! Very good camera. In short, Xperia M5’s IQ at IS0 3200 is equivalent to Z5’s IQ at ISO 800

Got s7 edge now and pretty happy with that. It never goes above iso 1250 in auto. Haven’t even used the pro mode much because the camera just does well in auto. Dynamic range is also another huge difference I’ve noticed. It just controls challenging scene a lot better than what xperias do. Xperias have a nasty habit of blowing things out and clipping edges a bit too much. Lowlight is also a vast improvement. Much better focus and IQ is just so much better because of lower iso, slower shutter and wider aperture. Best primarily camera I’ve used for sure

  • S7 is a very good camera, definitely the best low light performer thanks to its large pixel sensor, f/1.7 lens, and OIS. I’ve seen a lot of low light samples coming out of S7 and they’re very good!

Speaking about M5, i’ve done a lot of comparisons against Z2, Z3, and Z5. M5 destroyed them all, amazingly even if M5 shoots at higher ISO. Here are the comparisons if you are interested

  • Hi alex, have you done making video about Z5 camera?

  • deekbee

Indeed – Sony sensors are amongst the best on the market, they’re used by Samsung, Sony, Huawei, etc. The results on the new Huawei P9 look rather excellent.

    Here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6nA-CxO_A8

  • Very nice vid! I think Kaz Hirai and Sony programmers should really take a look.

If sony mobile brings their shit together, not even huawei, samsung, LG, apple cooperating with leica, nikon, canon, and olympus can take down full potential sony!

Another confusing logic from sony mobile is, why the fuck do they make midrange camera better than the flagship? I tested M5 against Z5 in all light conditions, and there wasn’t any scene that Z5 won.

I tested my M5 against my dad’s Note 5. M5 has darker f/2.2 lens and no OIS but still manages to put up a good fight against Note 5. More or less, note 5 and m5 are equal.

Btw, what do you think of the zoomed image quality from M5? I zoomed this 3.0 times
