STAMINA battery mode is returning on Marshmallow [Confirmed]

Sony Xperia STAMINA ModeProbably the biggest complaint we have heard when Sony Mobile updated Xperia devices to Marshmallow, was the removal of STAMINA mode. Sony’s STAMINA mode has been a part of its smartphones since 2013 and offers a way to preserve battery life by reducing background activities.

The feature was removed from Xperia Marshmallow as Google’s Doze mode, which is baked into Marshmallow, is meant to do something similar. However, Doze is primarliy activiated if there is no movement. We’ve received a number of complaints pointing to the fact that battery life using STAMINA on Lollipop significantly outlasts the battery life using Doze on Marshmallow. Anyway, Sony developers running the Beta Marshmallow program have now confirmed that STAMINA mode will be making a return on Marshmallow, which is great news. See the full statement below.

Great news. One of the most requested features is coming back to your Xperia running Marshmallow: Stamina mode.

We don’t have a release schedule yet, but the feature will be definitely available for members of the Xperia Beta Program in the near future.

We would like to thank you for your patience and constant feedback. Your voice is essential for the development of a better software.

  • could_you_doge

Thats good. but in Android N Doze works even when moving. So STAMINA mode will be useless again.

  • jumbo3220

too bad they didn’t give us the “Sinhala” language support as promised in Marshmallow update , at least we are getting the stamina mode back

  • XperiaBlog

Try, maybe at that point the complaints will be less, but it might be a while before we see Android N released on Xperia devices, especially as it hasn’t even officially been released yet.

  • Vuyo Ncube

    Translation: God-tier standby performance inbound!

    They’re behind schedule though.

  • Gästen med gesten

    ! Great :-)

  • Adrian

Excellent news, I hoped for something like this, maybe smartness over corporate profit prevails after all.

  • Bloobat

This and adoptable storage and I’ll actually look forward to upgrading to marshmallow!

  • “We would like to thank you for your patience and constant feedback. Your voice is essential for the development of a better software.”

So why remove the possibility to shoot with HDR with 20.7mp?

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Yes I don’t like the battery life on MM cause it is just bad and Doze is meh.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

But devices like Z2/3 wants it cause we’re not getting Android N.

  • Ambitious Man

This May, Z5 series will get it.

  • Adheesha Kanchana

What are you talking about..??? They did included Sinhala in MM as promised.

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

that mean u didn’t know why people demand it?

  • Hans Marder

Radio Gaga Update for Concept Rom is now available (Z3)

  • TharakaKS

No. As sony promised they include “Sinhala” language in MM/

  • Jaissal S

I’m glad that Stamina Mode is returning, because I’ve found that my battery lasts alot less than before.

  • jumbo3220

not in mine :( Z2 MM 6.0.1 , post a screenshot in language selecting screen if you can

  • haxona

There is a heavy difference in Battery life on my Z3+ on MM compared to earlier, it started of being better but quickly got down to bad levels. Also you cant even configure Doze compared to the customisation of Stamina mode.

  • Vinícius Azzolin

OMG! I’m in love with this news! The doze mode is shitty when compared with all the resources that stamina mode can do, as ULTRA Stamina mode or the function to underclock the processor, even the doze mode on android N.

  • Then may be they’ve not included Sinhalese for all regions.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Precisely, My battery life became shit after MM. It’s actually worse than LP.
I thought Google fixed Mobile Radio Active bug but it still exists

  • The One

If they would just fix the Mobile Radio Active bug, we wouldn’t need Stamina Mode!

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Sadly it’s only fixed on Z5 series not Z2/3 series.

  • Unknown

We have some Feedback for Sony :

1- PS3 Dualshock controller support ( It was removed from Z5 series and in Android MM 6.0 )
Some people they have only PS3 !

3- Font Style Support ( Important, Some people they Rooted the phone to change font style )
Now ( Samsung, LG, HTC, and Huawei ) They support font style & Sony Still !!! Why Sony ?

    3- Emoji’s :

emoji it look very bad and not nice for some people, We hope Sony to
add a choice to change it ( Hope to be like WhatsApp or Appel IOS )

Xperia Blog, Please send this 3 feedback to Sony or Sony Beta Community in G+ ( Google Plus ).

  • Wolf0491

I read that in the professors voice from Futurama for some reason.

Another note. Am I only person who didn’t use stamina mode? Maybe it’s because I gave screen on so much I don’t think think it would make difference. I get better battery one MM though. Had 5H on screen time on my Z3 other day with like 20% or so left. Surprised me.

  • Adheesha Kanchana

Even I don’t have the option to select Sinhalese in Language options. But I can view all the sinhala content in web sites and even the sinhala texts I receive. And this is what they have exactly promised back in December I guess. In that post they have clearly mentioned that you won’t be able to change the phone’s language in to sinhalese or type in sinhala, but you can only view sinhala content.
By the way, I’m running MM 6.0 on Z5

Oh well I think it affects very different cause when I checked my sister’s phone her location services on and she uses Facebook app a lot and more but she isn’t affected but my Z2 is like crazy affected. Chrome browser itself is like 3 hours

  • RockStar2005

I’m very unlikely to use Stamina Mode ever again. I had the Z3…… phone ever…… but Stamina Mode was the one thing that at times made it an unhappy experience.

Enabling Stamina Mode, because it turned out to be SO buggy, caused me to have issues with receiving MMS (group and/or photo) messages, which was super annoying cuz then I’d have to ask ppl to resend things, or messages about when my friends wanted to hang out wouldn’t get received. It was SUPER frustrating! Also, SM would be known to cause RANDOM battery free-fall drain. It would be fine then one day I’d notice over some hours it the battery life would drop like a brick. I tried various tricks which sometimes worked temporarily (clearing caches, etc), but nothing would fix it unless I FACTORY RESET the phone. Then I got wise……………

After all that BS, I decided to try out several battery saver apps and hope one could do what Stamina Mode does. After auditioning several, I found one that did what Stamina Mode does, BUT BETTER. It’s called Hibernation 360 Master ( ). SM doesn’t actually kick in until FIFTEEN MINUTES after you turn your screen off. But 360 activates the MOMENT you turn your screen off. NO messages or notifications get affected by it. I still get all messages and notifications when it’s enabled (which is only when the screen is off)………IMs, text messages, e-mails, calls, etc. It only costs $1.95 for the full version, but it’s WORTH IT! The app works just like SM but w/o the issues. When the screen is off, the battery percentage will drop NO MORE than 1% over several hours……..6 hours, 9 hours…….. SAME percentage (or -1%), MAX!!

I’ve found that it doesn’t work on Samsung phones (tested on both the Note 5 and S7), and I have yet to confirm if it does on other Android brand phones, but on my Z3 and also the Z5 (see below), IT WORKS PERFECTLY!!!!! ANYONE who has an Xperia phone should be this app yesterday! lol

Want more proof? Not entirely convinced?! Read these posts from XDA by people who volunteered to test out 360 on their Z5 phone.

    Volunteer #1 results:

Volunteer #2 Part 1: (when he refers to “doze mode” I believe he meant 360, not the Marshmallow Doze we all know)

    Volunteer #2 Part 2:

Note: I have no affiliation with the developers of 360. I just hate SM and could care less that Sony is bringing it back. Just make sure that you leave SM OFF permanently when using this app. Do yourselves a favor and get this app, and make sure to enable ALL 3 parts of it (and get full version, which is done in-app)!

I have the Galaxy S7 right now, and while it is a great phone overall, I find it to be somewhat overrated. I will be returning to Sony this June when they finally release the Xperia X Performance (counting the days! lol). Samsung phones and I just don’t click the way I do with Sony phones. lol

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

    As you can see here

  • BigOne

I’m happy for this news, since I own Z3 I rediscovered the pleasure of a fluidity ‘exceptional that Samsung is dreaming. With lollipop I feel good, but I would not wait for Christmas for a stable version of marshmallow . Also how does the camera application now? the improvements and visible?

i need a prerooted MM ROM , or lite MM ROM.

  • 3_nity

You don’t have knowledge how to using Battery Stamina, dud.

  • RockStar2005

Actually I do. Very well actually. It’s not complicated. You either turn it on or off, as well as its sub-options. The fact is, Stamina Mode can be buggy. Even when I whitelisted my texting apps, I STILL had the issues occur, including the random battery drain. It didn’t take long to figure out that SM was the root cause of my problems, because the moment I factory reset it and LEFT SM off permanently, my problems disappeared instantly! And I even noticed that my text messages (both SMS & MMS) were sending out a lot faster than ever before and I did NOT have even one case where an MMS message got lost. Not one.

I’m not the only person who’s had problems with it. I’ve talked to others who experienced the same issues I did, or close to it. Maybe it’s just bad luck, but I went through not one, not two, but THREE Z3 phones before I finally realized it was SM all along. So you really have no basis here to make that assumption. If I went through THREE Z3 phones and the problem kept coming up, then that says statistically I could not have been the only one.

  • Sitomanvoy

Terrific news, i have noticed a reduction of about 4 – 5 hours on normal use since i update my Z3c from lollipop, Doze is not competition to stamina mode.

  • 3_nity

Ok I see your problems. But the points of your is not happen to me. Just compare my phone a day using Battery Stamina turn on and another day I turn it off. And my result, when Battery Stamina turn on, my phone stand by time longer than if I turn it off.

  • RockStar2005

Yes……when SM WAS working for me, which the majority of the time it was (until it wasn’t lol), it was great! But when MMS messages got lost or when phone battery would no longer last half a day, then it had to go.

I don’t think most ppl had that problem, and I don’t know why it kept happening to me. Maybe it was just tied to the T-Mobile Z3 and not the other models? That’s why I’m happy they’re only gonna release ONE single-SIM model of the Xperia X Performance, not 2. The only difference is the one the U.S. is getting will have the fingerprint sensor included, but NOT the software to run it (stupid). But I’m buying the int’l version anyway so I’ll be fine.

I’d still rather use 360 anyway even if I didn’t have SM issues. As mentioned before, SM takes 15 minutes to kick in once the screen turns off, but 360 starts INSTANTLY right after. A lot can happen in 15 minutes. The fact that one of the people who volunteered (see my last post) got up to NINE hours of screen-off time and ONLY lost 1% power is a testament to 360’s capabilities.

  • 3_nity

Ok, dud. Lucky to you. :)

Very good news! Now, if I could choose to disable Doze altogether…
So far I’ve got a problem with Marshmallow.
Since upgrading my Z5 to Marshmallow (both .163 and .185), it seems to me that apps don’t stay alive in the background as much (= for as long) as they did on Lollipop. Back on 5.1, I was so happy to go back in my recent apps and find that when choosing one it wouldn’t often reload from scratch (remember the complaints about S6 and Note 5 killing apps?). Now on 6.0 recently used apps are killed too soon for my liking and disabling battery optimization for the most important ones has had no effect whatsoever.
Has anyone noticed the same / Does anyone have similar complaints?

I understand you and I know how you’re feeling about using 8mp when having a 23mp camera, sir. But the thing is that this is not a deal breaker, when 8MP is giving you more details than 23MP, if you think about it, it’s not a problem actually, 8MP photos are faster to capture and save than 23mp, and the good optimising gives you better shots than using 23MP.

Anyway, I recommend you to use Google Camera, much better results than stock one.
