Xperia XZ Dual manual confirms hybrid SIM tray

by XB on 30th September 2016

in Xperia XZ series

sony-xperia-xz-dual-hybrid-sim-tray-thumbThe user guide for the Sony Xperia XZ and Xperia XZ Dual is now available for all to download (see links below). We are able to confirm that the Xperia XZ Dual will operate a hybrid SIM card slot, as has been seen for all dual-SIM Xperia models launched this year.

What this means is that Xperia XZ Dual owners who plan to use two SIM cards will not be able to utilise a microSD card. A memory card is supported, but to do so, you will have to give up one of your SIM card slots.

To compensate for this, Sony offers 64GB of internal storage for dual SIM models versus the single SIM models which only have 32GB. However, we’re sure many Sony fans would prefer the company to revert back to older handsets where dual SIM cards were supported as well as a microSD card at the same time.

    Hey Abdul, are you here?

PS: that’s a bad choice, poor memory for a dual SIM user :(

  • karam abi karam

I have xperia x dual and can use dual sim and memory card at same time

  • SM

    really bad move SONY. Disappointed.

  • theskig

Yeah we all now that’s very stupid and that’s why I’ll stick with my Z5 Premium Dual for a looong time :)

  • GregLu

Every brand make it that way. At least they leave the choice to the end user :)

  • Jr

Uhmm i kinda like ti get dual sim 64 gb variant the reason more memory lol but ill used single sim. Well it might be a bad move but do all dual sim user are heavu user also? If its so minority let say 50 to 100 well for me its a good decision.

  • cerunnos

Think of it as an upgraded memory version, because that is exactly what it is (some regions only have access to the “dual” version).
The Dual SIM feature is actually a bonus.

While this obviously won’t apply to everyone or powerusers, 64GB is generally enough for most users. Even though I take a ton of photos and videos, most of it is moved to my NAS plus OneDrive (I have 365) for additional backup. In my opinion, as long as the internal storage is ample for apps, then most users will be pretty satisfied. Spotify takes care of music, though I do keep a handful of songs on the device (in addition to Spotify caching).

Obviously there will be some people who try to cram everything (high quality music files for example) onto their devices, but I think they are the minority.

Haven’t filled my 64GB iPhone up, but I am at around 70% capacity on my Xperia Z5 (32GB + 64GB SD card), though the SD card’s usage is <7GB.
    Obviously YMMV, just my thoughts.

  • Mateus B. Cassiano

And now Sony is following this stupid trend too. Crippling the SD Card slot for users that require both dual SIMs and a SD Card at the same time is unacceptable. We’ll now need to resort to those Frankenstein mods of gluing a SIM Card together with the microSD to get back a functionality all previous dual SIM Xperias had, hassle free.

  • cerunnos

I’m actually curious, what kind of usage are you talking about? Do you store everything on your phone?

  • Junior Rider

I still want two sim card slot and the dedicated memory slot, but i guess almost all OEM are doing it that way…

  • Mateus B. Cassiano

Well, using two SIM Cards and a microSD? I could do that hassle free on previous Xperia devices and even on devices of other OEMs, until Samsung (AFAIK) started the trend on its low/mid-range devices, then carried to the flagships and now unfortunately other OEMs are following too (first Motorola, now Sony). That’s stupid!

Regarding the storage, the point is not whether the built-in storage is enough, the point is not being able to use one of the advised features if I choose (or need) to use two SIM Cards. The internal memory available may be enough today but probably won’t later. I generally keep a device for around 3 or 4 years before replacing, and I’m pretty sure even this 64GB variant won’t be enough in 2020.

On my particular case, I use the internal storage only for apps and keep everything else I can (like photos, music, videos, etc) on a microSD card. That way I can easily carry over the files and in the case of a phone damage I can just take out the card and most of my personal data will be with me, even if the device was totally damaged.

“Oh, but there’s cloud services!” It doesn’t matter. You need a data connection to download/upload files and we all know that’s not something always available, and the cost per GB of a microSD card nowadays is thousands of times lower than what it would cost to keep them online plus the data charges.

  • Stergios Papoutsoglou

This was one of the main reasons I stick with Sony(dual sim plus SD slot), but now this is gone. The fm radio is gone, each passing day Sony is loosing all the features that made it stand out and be unique.

  • Stergios Papoutsoglou

Me too, as it turns out my Z5 premium will be with me for a long time

  • Dhany Wibiksana

Sony now different than sony before, lanyard, fm radio, sd card with dual sim dissappear, sony following trends now not unique, to bad sony.

  • Dhany Wibiksana

    True and agree

Sony, please listen to the consumers, be different. Dual sim PLUS micro SD. Also, 64GB is good. Do not skim on that.

  • hansip

well it’s 64GB now for Dual SIM model so i think it’s not as required as before. Just in case you need to store anything, just use OTG drive.. Sure it’s a hassle but i don’t mind if i get 64GB in the first place.

  • theskig

    Totally agree.

  • theskig

Yeah I’m also a heavy FM radio user, can’t even consider buying a new model.

  • Mr. Bogus

same here, Plus the camera and their cam app
if they did not correct this mistake by MWC2017 I will be forced to look to other alternative for my current up coming upgrade

  • John Caddell Sparky

Can I complain here about camera! I just check wiki and see that X Series still use the same IMX300 from last year’s Z5 series. WTH, Sony!? You released IMX318 for new phones but you still use the same from last year. Just very disappointed because X Compact without metal or IP rating isn’t worse enough.

Or someone please tell me that IMX300 can still produce decent images that make sense with the price!? Gosh, I thought Sony is going to change but they will never do.

From X10, S, and TX users! I’ve spent way too much money for Sony’s flagship and all I got is shitty products. Farewell, Sony. The only thing I like is that at least the ROM is stable. (My dad’s Z Ultra is still very fast). but no with this price, I’ll stick with Chinese phone, their ROM maybe suck but I got more speed from CPU with lower price. and save money for iPhone. Gotta admit, iOS is more stable and coherence. :(

  • Bezels for the win !

    SONY is a f#cking bitch …why, just why !!?

If I buy XZ will have to try this(see the link) , it should probably work…

  • Bezels for the win !

IMX318 is just better for videos and is basically the same sensor as IMX 300 , and actually IMX318 could even produce worse stills than from IMX300 becuase of difference in unit cell size(pixels) – 1.0 μm IMX318 and -1.1 μm IMX300 .

  • Xajel

There has been some hacks ( just search in Youtube ) to have both the SIM & microSD cards in the same slot…

  • Zayed Kotayba

I agree with you 100% I don’t like the way things are going with the X series and to this moment I don’t understand why SONY discontinued the Z series

  • Zayed Kotayba

Not to mention Z series, No more high-end Compact, Walkman, Visualiser, SensMe and so on ……

  • Stergios Papoutsoglou

    Me neither…

  • MikeU

I understand; however, Sony, with the Z series, lost nearly USD 190 million in 2015. “Sony being Sony” was not profitable. In 2016, the company has still retained some of its distinctiveness with the X series and managed to return to profitability (albeit with a smaller mobile division). I prefer the FM radio, 2sim + SD slot, etc.); but at this time, Sony only care about one element: profitability.

  • MikeU

The advantage with the cloud is your information will always be present, in case you lose your phone or your SD card is damaged.

  • Stergios Papoutsoglou

No argue there but I can’t imagine disabling the already onboard fn radio helps in keeping the bills in check, or omitting the SD card slot on a 700 dollar phone..
The only unique manufacturer left is LG…

  • MikeU

Let us see what Sony offers at MWC 2017. My hope is a true successor to the Sony Z5 Premium is made in the future.

  • Mateus B. Cassiano

You still need a data connection to download/upload files and a subscription to store big files (as most free options doesn’t provide enough storage). SD Cards still provide a way more cost effective solution on this case…

  • MikeU

Point taken but I can see the direction away from SD cards (check Apple’s new iPhone 7) and more towards the cloud where companies can generate $$$. For me, I use the cloud to store files and I pay for the storage.

  • dko3tgk

This is why I bought a Z5 Dual instead of a X Performance Dual. Can’t Sony just make the tray and slot accommodate 2 SIMs and 1 SD, like the DIY hack, except without having to cut up the SIm? Just make it a little thicker so you can have the second SIM and SD in the tray. I dont’ see why this can’t be done. They have so much more internal space due to the giant bezels.I’m not coming back to Sony until they add the Dual Sim with SD feature back.

  • TP

No fingerprint sensor for US version, no dual SIM for US version. no 64GB storage for US version. What the hell !

  • Shamoy Rahman

They need to be packing in as many features as possible not eliminating them. Maybe carriers should offer MicroSD storage integrated into their SIM cards now.

  • Shamoy Rahman

    Haha, I should do that.

  • Shamoy Rahman

I’m just gonna cut the metal piece off my 2nd SIM card, trim it and stick it onto the MicroSD with superglue. That way I will have all 3 working at once. I’ve tried it on other phones before.

  • Bezels for the win !

MWC phones are crap compared to IFA phones (Z3 , Z5 , XZ ) , or there is something good as Z2 to make comeback LOL ?

  • Bezels for the win !

nice , after u try it report back dose it work , I’m 99% sure that it should :)

  • Hei

With this new combined tray does it also mean no more SD card hot swap on XZ? Since to switch SD means remove sim also. In my Z5, the phone shuts down every time I move the sim tray.

So far counting the disappointing changes in X series for me:
Disable FM in originally capable hardware
    no lanyard hole
    No more SD card hotswap(?)
Castrated dual sim + sd feature
    No more small apps
    now useless stamina mode
    No more screen recording

Other than TouchWiz, features that made Sony stand out from Samsung are being eliminated in X series…. I hope Sony does better in 2017, might as well save for iphone for my Z5 dual replacement though I really do like the XZ design. it was the above features that decided for Z5 over Sammy S7 edge for me….

  • Shamoy Rahman

    It works.

  • Shamoy Rahman

You can stick the MicroSD card to the 2nd SIM card with glue. Done. You now have dual sim + microSD in a phone. It works for me :D

  • Tommy He

Do you happen to know any other Snapdragon 820 phone that known to has FM Radio?
Not sure missing FM Radio is a software of hardware related.

In early version of Android 6.0 for Z5 family, FM Radio was removed due to conflict with Bluetooth. Once the problem was solved, FM Radio returned.

  • Tommy He

Just bought a Xperia XA Ultra and glad to find dual-sim with SD card slot.

Guess not the entire X series are that bad.

  • theskig

I think the 820 is the cause for no radio at least in Sony, don’t know if there are other phones with it.
I also had the terrible problem of the FM radio bug on my Z5p Dual but it never disappeared from the phone.

  • El_Carnicero

I followed this video and now I have dual SIM plus SD card. Actually works like a charm:

  • Tommy He

FM Radio seems to fine on my Z5c and my wife’s Z5P Dual.

  • theskig

    Yeah it’s OK now.

  • Luke Masters

Question guys. If I have purchased the Xperia XZ F331 (non-dualsim) can I purchase a dual-sim tray (from F332) and use it in the F331? Or are the inner contacts different between these 2 models?
