Anyone picking a Google Pixel over a Sony Xperia this year?

by XB on 6th October 2016

in News

google-pixelSo, by now you’ve all had a chance to process Google’s new direction with its Pixel smartphones, confining the Nexus range to the pages of history. There’s been plenty of coverage of the pros (build quality, hardware and software integration, Google Assistant) and cons (bland design, high price, no SD card, no water resistance). Another big positive is the camera, which DxOMark rates as the very best.

Taking all of this into account, are any of you Xperia fans looking forward to the Google Pixel? Do you feel it offers more over the Xperia offering this year? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

google-pixel-xperia

  • Vinicius Araujo

    No way

  • penubag

Not getting the pixel. The phones I like to carry around are also a fashion statement, and this looks just like any other generic phone. All Sony phones are pieces of art and that’s why I buy Sony. Plus, I’m looking forward to the XZ2, with the rumored new bezelless JDI display.

  • penubag

I should also note that yes of course Sony is not always the best, maybe the camera, hardware, and software scores slightly lower than competitors, but the design makes up for it. It’s like saying, would you date a really hot girl or an average looking girl but her IQ is a couple points higher? You be the judge

  • Matt

my body is ready, . . . for the next pixel. im preparing to say goodbye to sony.

just because i have a great experience with Pixel c. im moving to full vanilla android.

  • Makiz

The iClone? No thanx, I prefer the new design of the XZ, the frond facing speakers and the Sony apps and interface.

  • Paul M

Having tried and failed to get Sony to replace the battery in my Xperia Z Ultra, I shall never buy another Sony.

  • Paul M

not sure if u r serious or not.

  • Nimche

The initial leaked rendering of Pixel phone looked a tad better. If Google wanted to tackle the idea of selling flagships (design + hardware + high-price) they should have hired a better designer. The previously released Nexus models had better look and price point would justify the rest.

Although Sony phone’s cameras in the past didn’t show the best results but they are still decent. Having a waterproofed phone is an added insurance just in case it accidentally jumps in water.
XZ specs is acceptable like every other year (while expected more from the Xcompact) Sony released a flagship which in terms of hardware is not too low nor not too high but they always work right out of the box and nothing like them are out there. Sony has the best location and function for the fingerprint sensor (owning a Nexus 5X for the last few months) and many more adds up make it a great package. What is being sold in Europe which include bundles are the best, but this is the first year that Sony has released their flagship phone in the US earlier than most other countries. So at the end of the day, still nothing replaces an Xperia device on my list.

  • Madis

Personally don’t care how it looks like, I have it in a cover anyway. Size does matter though (using the Compact series).

  • (NinJer)

I’m getting an XZ, I wish the XZ was daydream ready…

  • Comte Junqueira

No I wouldn’t pick a Pixel over a Xperia However, 4G RAM and incorporation of FM radio hardware/chip and no 5,5in screen are drawbacks of the Xperia flagships in 2016

  • Angela

I love my Xperia and want to upgrade to the XZ but it doesn’t have a functional fingerprint sensor in the US. So… I have already preordered a Pixel.

  • dragonsneeze

Seems like a good choice for US. That assistant probably won’t work well in some languages. It may not even be sold here and if HTC prices apply, things get worse quickly. So unless Pixels are significantly cheaper than the equivalent Xperia there’s no way I’d choose them.

  • SoftbankSucks

Couldn’t agree more. If I want Apple-like phone I’ll rather go for iPhone (No expandable storage, huge bezels, that price range)
I can have more values of Android experience with other brands for less than that money.

  • Raj Singh

The problem is — and this is just my opinion — Sony phones have a better design but the Google phone has better internals. Tough call. I hate the way the new Pixel phones look but like the specs. I love the way the new Xperia phones look but am not satisfied with the specs. Too bad Sony can’t make a phone for Google.

  • xAntifreeZe

Wait till DxOMark release their score for Xperia XZ

  • MikeU

Is the fingerprint scanner of such importance to you that you ordered the Pixel?

  • MikeU

For now…maybe next year Sony will have better internals.

  • No expendable storage but you have limitless storage with google apps such as google photos for full resolution pictures and videos.
What is wrong with the design of the iphone? It looks good too me, and it does not automatically mean you have to buy an iphone if just because of the design.

And you complain about the bezels, really?

  • penubag

not sure why you think that? it’s logical

  • Bezels for the win !

you expect to get warranty on battery ? LOL

  • Bezels for the win !

No SD card ! ? Well f#ck you google and f#ck your pixel phone . I don’t give two sh!ts about best camera or whatever when there is no basic feature as expandable storage .

I Love the bezels though :)

  • Taquidi

I wouldn’t pick a HTC generic iphone copy with the Google logo on it over a Xperia. No waterproof, no expandable storage, no dedicated camera button. Alas, seems those freaking bezels-haters who can’t stop bashing Sony over the bezels vanished after the Pixel appearance. Where is their God now?

  • SoftbankSucks

Nothing is wrong with the iPhone design.
i own both iPhone and Android (Xperia & Galaxy) and each has their own distinctive features which I like. The quote from a Pixel hands on article below totally echoed my opinion:

“With prices starting at $649 for the 32GB, 5-inch version, Google is positioning its Pixel phones to compete with Apple’s and Samsung’s flagships. This will no doubt disappoint Nexus fans who were hoping for a more affordable option. It’s also a questionable strategy, considering the lack of brand awareness around Nexus/Pixel among the general public and Google’s lack of retail exposure. Its alignment with Verizon should help, but I imagine it will be difficult to convince someone looking to buy an iPhone or Galaxy phone to buy a Pixel instead, especially when its premiere feature, the one advantage it has over every other Android phone, is timely software and security updates—not exactly a sexy selling point.”

  • QBerto

Google confirmed they have IP53 protection, so is not IP68 but still, have some protection

SD slot never appeared on nexus, so is the same, price… well they have SD821….

I don’t think they are so good, but they are not bad phones

PS Xperiablog every time I clic outside the text box can’t clic anything, link or textbox, there are a problem with your page?

  • Taquidi

Some protection indeed, but quite low, way less than IP68. Drop that Pixel in some shallow pond, it’s bye-bye.

  • KzX

I’m pretty sure that XZ will get same score with Pixel or higher.

  • (NinJer)

I don’t think you have ever found true love. wow.

  • penubag

it’s called an analogy.. and yes, i have, tyvm

  • Raj Singh

They need 4GB of RAM, the most current SOC and bring back the 4K on flagships.

  • Marcel

    tbh both lost my sale.

  • Fuerte Gollito

Pixel have horrible design… Megash|t, google assistant no need, crazy storage without expandable… Much google shits app…

  • Zohaib

I hate the stock google user interface
No themes , and no extra features like smart controls in sony, Image enhancement settings, Settings in Audio, and so on
I never buy a google device over Sony
My XZ is coming soon and happy with it

  • Jenge Engelbrecht

Sony is back on Par so no. I’d buy an Apple first before I get a Pixel…

  • Both are too high priced. After 4 years of Sony Xperia I recently bought a OnePlus 3. Couldn’t be happier, only thing I’m really missing is the physical canmera button, although that alert slider really comes in handy.

  • Vasilis Prantzos

I would pick the Pixel over xperia, after 3 years of xperia phones. I am sick and tired of poor battery life, camera overheating and slow to shoot, sensitive screen and laggy software!! Not buying it because of the price and lack of waterproofing, but I sure as hell am buying a galaxy s7 edge when the price is right in a month or two… Goodbye xperia. It’s been three great years. Always hoped Xperia brand to survive, but not so sure nowadays..

  • Doubleyoupee

You have google photos on every phone…

  • DonRox

Sadly, i am. I am yet to find a proper replacement for my almost perfect z3 compact. However the 5″ pixel ticks a lot of boxes for me. Once its price drops a bit I’m buying

  • MrM3

The new Google phone’s is not for me. Look to much like Iphones and just like Iphone you have to pay way more then they are worth. XZ will be my new phone and replace my old Z2. I just hope the camera will be good this time around.

  • SonyMan

Although I’m a big fan of stock android I’ve never considered of buying any Google device, either being a nexus or a pixel, more than a Sony. I had to make the same choice back in 2013 between the N4 and the Xperia Z. Xperia Z won by a large margin both the spec sheet and real time performance. This year was also the 6P or the Z5P. Always the nexuses run on the same hardware with the Sony devices but always Sony comes with a much more richer features list. So the actual question every time is Sony or Samsung. Only the GS4 was better back in 2013 and only the S7 edge is better now than a Z5P. And still I’m going for Sony. For people who have used to own waterproof phones since 2012(Xperia acro s) you cannot go back. Sony is a one way road even if it has blurry edges on the camera or huge bezels. What Pixel phones have now as “exclusive” features on Nougat 7.1, Sony phones have them almost since kitkat. Stock android needs a lot of work before it can compete with oems, especially Sony’s version which has proved to be the most stable across every single device!

  • ramuk

Same here. Next year pixel here I come unless Sony do something amazing next year.

  • Roh_Mish

    Getting the XZ.

  • Roh_Mish

The X Performance is just one point down. And the XZ camera is much much better than X Performance. Surely it will be better

  • I’ll see what they are priced like in my country. I’d prefer the XZ, but I’m open to change.
    .
    .
    .
But I’d prefer the XZ. :-)

  • Bezels for the win !

”limitless storage” please enlighten me how ?

  • Andreescu Daniel

I’ve order my xz one week ago so never .. :)

  • Emil Oskarsson

No thanks, will stay with my beloved x performance for 2-3 years more ;)

  • Emil Oskarsson

That’s why I choose to stick with Sony phones :) I love the awesome Xperia UI! And the cameras are great aswell! :)

  • djfapples

    XZ ONLY

  • smartuser8

Don’t worry, for all Z3C users… we are all lost right now…

  • smartuser8

    Xperia WZ?

  • Shehab Skull

Yesterday .. I had a nice discussion with a regular user that had used iphone / galaxy and sony phones .. now he is holding a Z3+ , I asked him what do u think about sony phones ? he answered ” they are iphones with android inside them ” I hate iphones but his expression was just amazing .. because a regular user like him thinks iphones are amazing .. so his look on sony phones is as his look on iphones .. we must be proud of our sony phones and devices <3 i will never buy phones with out sony logo on them ^^

  • KarFar

I own a nexus 5x and it’s meehh the pixels look even uglier. so NO

  • FooVoyager

Google Cloud, which probably comes with a fine print user agreement where the user grants Google unlimited access to said stored content.

  • deekbee

You do realise that the DXO “reviews” are effectively bought, don’t you? They are pretty much worthless, and a high rating is really not representative of real world performance – the Z5C got a good rating, and that swayed my purchase. To say that I was disappointed is an understatement.

  • Mac

You still happy with your X performance?

  • Mac

Tell me more about this FM radio issue? I can’t even remember using the built-in radiotuner on a smartphone. Last time I used it must’ve been on my old SE w760i.

  • Mac

    iChromeinpeace..
    or something like that :D

  • lolno. Most likely keeping my Z5 till next year. I am hoping for better on both the Pixel phone 2 and XZ2.

  • Khillo81

Funny you should say the Galaxy S4 was better: I know several people with that phone and they all complain about it and say it’s rendered unusable. Most of the features don’t work, it’s sluggish, … Always found Samsung’s phones gimmicky with too many features on the spec sheet that don’t work in real life. Maybe with their exploding S7 series, we will see them removed from their throne.

  • Khillo81

My fear is that Google will remove SD card storage support from future versions of Android… With the news of other OS’s in trouble, I fear an Apple/Google duopoly that will leave us all losers

  • hansip

If i’m having money, still no way i go with Pixel. I’d rather wait for Sony Nougat and ejoy MM in XZ.. Sony design is still the best imo, whereas this is just Appley..

Sadly for Cost Reason i chose Xiaomi to replace my broken Z5P.. :( Hoping for X gen but none can go inside Indonesia legally so no dice this time around.

  • twm

If the question would be “Anyone picking a Google Pixel over a Sony Xperia X series phone this year?”
Then it is a solid yes.

  • Zoran Bohinjc

I am staying with xperia. I am using Z2 at the moment and I am very happy with it. If I replace the phone It will be XZ. I like design very much.

  • iGMX

Pixel looks ugly. I want to rip out that glass part on the back, it’s not balanced design at all.

  • NO!

  • Simon Strandman

I might be. My plan was to get the x compact to replace my aging z3 compact, but after that turned out to be such a disappointment I’m not sure what to get. The xz is nice but it comes with an old version of Android and Sony isn’t exactly fast when it comes to updates. Might as well pay just as much for a phone that doesn’t have that problem then.

  • Emil Oskarsson

It’s a really good device and haven’t let me down a single time, my old Xperia z is still a great phone so yeah I’m still happy with my x performance :)

  • laci_csk

    no way

  • Malik Shahid Farooq aWaN

I am already in love with Xperia, there is no room for another.

  • Laala♡

The Pixel is pretty good, though the lack of Stereo speaker and IP68 certification kills it for me…waiting for my blue XZ to arrive. :)

  • Ilya Panasenko

No. As Sony Compact-series fan, Pixel’s screen is too large for me. Also, no waterproofing

  • let´s not be literally too much.
what i meant is there is no need for expendable storage.

  • price is something else, if you ask me, xperia flagship phones are overpriced, but still people buying it.

it is simple, who ever is capable of buying phones that price range, he will buy it.

  • i didn´t said that there isn´t google photo app on other android devices, i am telling that you get unlimited storage with google photos app, with taken photos at full resolution, exclusively on google pixel devices.

  • Taquidi

And ditch all SD manufacturers and the millions that Market produce? Not going to happen, that´s an economically suicide move. OEMs would hunt Google executives with pikes and torches.

  • Matt

let see if the next google design wont make me want to gauge my eye out

  • paul_cus

Nah, went with the X Compact. Thought about maybe waiting around for the Pixel, but once I saw the reveal I was happy I stuck with Sony.

  • kaostheory

In the end it’s still hTc. The only good phone made by hTc was the Butterfly. Google should have gone with Nokia.

  • Aldi Wan Kenobi

Nope. Hasn’t event crossed my mind.

  • Srijan Chawla

I’ll just say one thing, I pre-ordered the Xperia XZ in India :P

  • paul_cus

Totally agree that Sony phones are pieces of art.

  • iia3ezu

Probably. Stock Android minus the preinstalled Sony crapware.

You’ll also get Android updates first. No more moaning about ‘Dude where’s my Android update for Xperia Z[insert number]?’

Next year, I may get the 10th year anniversary edition of the iPhone, especially if there’s some breakthrough feature e.g. VR. My second phone, and very first iPhone.

Cya Sony Xperia… you won’t be missed. Go fight with Huawei and HTC and Motorola for scraps.

  • Wolf0491

No double tap to wake? no waterproof? no front facing speakers? no SD card?
There conference almost made me want one but then I realized everything I would lose

  • Asam Laksa

How about smaller bezels but keep the dual speaker ? Challenge yourself. Believe that you can create it Sony.. Also 5 inch screen device. Sony MAKE BELIEVE..

  • roeshak

the funny thing is very few of the fanboys are interested in the truth. they just cling to dx0 ratings for salvation lol

  • Bezels for the win !

maybe for you , if you have like one game ,two apps ,three songs and five photos then phone storage will be enough , how I’m supposed to move my over 60 gigs of music in that crappy pixel phone ?

  • simbob

The pixel is centered around the premise that you will stream everything and allow your phone to use tons of background data + constant location updates. Those are essential for Google assistant to work. In my case, I coul’d not care less for a vocal assistant so I don’t want to waste precious battery power for this big brother crap i’ll never use. On top of that, I seldom stream music so I want my expandable storage.

I saw the Pixel keynote and most of the “strong points” of the phone were related to google assistant with services and features taht only exist in a major US city. Shure the camera is decent but it still is only ONE point better than the latest Sony hardware… Not a single word was said about the battery life so I suspect it will be crappy. Especially since they claimmed the phone can quick charge 7h use time in 15 min. That’s cool if you want to keep you phone for a year and you don’t mind prematurely aging your battery. I prefer the Sony phylosophy where you avoid quich charging to get the battery to retain it’s charge for much longer.

  • ramuk

LOL, yeah, Pixel is really ugly. Sony’s phone Hardware design is still the best IMO but my priority is changing . I wish pixel phone looks like XZ with all the software and hardware features of pixel. Hope they will copy Sony’s phone design for their next pixel phone next year. That would be perfect for me. I Still love Sony, I think I’ll continue loving the company but Pixel seems to be the phone for me. Next year can’t come soon enough.

  • Denis Deny Jamny

Agreed. There’s really no real replacement right now. Z5c is not that big upgrade and XC is more of a downgrade… Not software like but hardware. I wouldn’t mind chipset, but the waterproofing bugs me a lot.

  • Geese Howard

Google is really cool, really… however naming a phone Pixel, definitely a NO. Despite some stupidity we get from their mobile division at times, Sony Xperia is for life for me :)

  • paul_cus

I think it would surprise you how nice the X Compact is.

  • Taquidi

You are not everyone. Last time I used my phone FM radio was 2 hours ago, I use it almost everyday.

  • SonyMan

I meant hardware wise. My brother nought an s4 the same time as I bought Xperia Z and despite I’ve already switched to Z5P my brother’s s4 is really sth to not brag about. It can hardly last 2.5 hours of sot and it can barely outperform my Xperia Z in any task. Even synthetic benchmarks come so close you would expect same hardware under the hood, although I think this happens because of the really outdated 5.0.1 it runs versus Xperia’s 5.1.1 that doesn’t suffer from ram problems.

  • Bezels for the win !

Cloud ? LOL never used that crap and never will . PERIOD .

  • Hyrum Clarke

So true. This storage may not have a price tag, but it certainly isn’t free. Photos and videos are among the most intimate of content, and yet people are sooo eager for Google to store it and (fine print) analyze it to purgatory and back.

  • AsadMulla

I carry 2 phones. My Z3C and Z5. Im waiting for XZ to arrive anytime now.
Without a doubt, love my Z3C much more then my Z5 which I dislike quite a lot. Cant replace my Z3C with anything equivalnt right now.

  • niugininexus

I’ll be upgrading to a Pixel phone this year. Nothing wrong with the Xperias (had Xperia Z to mu current Z5). I know that Sony always have a superb phone to offer but I’m curious about this new Google phone (had Nexus One – 6).

  • Vincentius Phang

am I the only one to find this phone to be damn ugly? especially the front, its totally looked boring. The back is, I don’t know, kinda nice but the tone aluminium + plastic is… I don’t know.

  • Vincentius Phang

I got an insider tip that X series will surely come to Indonesia. Just a matter of time. But he can’t specify when. Maybe until Xperia XZZZ lol.

  • Denis Deny Jamny

For me it’s also the design of it that no compact has matched ever since. Z1c had aluminium frame but the back was made of plastic. Z3c plastic frame but glass back. Z5c and XC plastic only… IT was easily the best combo yet.

  • Mac

No certainly not, I didn’t mean to be rude. I was just curious.
So you lack Internet connection at many places or why not using webradio?

  • Mac

Aight, so the heating issues it had in the beginning is not that present anymore?
I was hoping for X Compact just because I like the size of my Z1C and Z3C. But saw it irl yesterday and was totally disappointed with the materials on it..
Hoping XZ gives me a better feeling and that I can compromise the size of it since there is no real flagship compact anymore :(

  • Talos the Robot

Does anyone know the model of the camera sensor included to the Google Pixel ??

  • Talos the Robot

Add also the Hi-Res audio, Eldac, waterproofing and micro-SD card.

  • Talos the Robot

XZ will have higher score in video for sure!

  • Alinekgaray2

  • MixoMaxoViper

This time I am not going to choose Google again, I will buy IPhone SE. I am so sad to say it, I would be in heaven if SONY improved camera and their software for Z3 series. Proud user of XZ3C till December.

  • MixoMaxoViper

    ”cameras are great aswell”

M8, I could speak ’bout Sony cameras more than 2 days, belive me- they’re good but not better than Samsung S7/N7 or IPhone cameras. They lack RAW format, full manual controls, post processing makes grown men cry and easy scratching lens are making it only good/average cameras. I own Z3C now, but I plan to buy something other this year. I was Sony fanboy since Xperia SP, but not this time. They stopped to be innovative.

  • algiuz

If we believe sony, xz should get 7.0 this month

  • Darren W

Poor battery life and laggy software? Wait till you get the Samsung Touchwiz treatment. I know they are meant to have improved some since my days with an S3, but I gather TouchWiz is still a performance drain and the main reason I won’t touch them now. Try the Xperia Z3 concept software (http://www.xperiablog.net/2016/03/01/sonys-marshmallow-android-concept-is-our-favourite-xperia-software-to-date/). I get excellent battery life and superb performance from my 2 year old Z3, admittedly at the expense of missing some of the added Sony software touches, but worth it if these are an issue for you. I recommend trying this first. There’s something you won’t get from Samsung. (Plus the phone still looks nicer than a Pixel, with more physical features, even if it wont get Nougat now.)

  • DBS

The XZ is a waste of money compared to the other Android flagships of 2016.
HOWEVER, these iPixels are even worse.

If the decision was between an Xperia XZ and an iPixel, I’d go for the Sony one without a shadow of a doubt. At least, even though it offers me the same crap OIS-less camera, the XZ offers me a normal fingerprint scanner placement, waterproofing, expandable battery and a tiny bit of customisation (not much though as Sony’s theme engine has become shit since Lollipop). Oh and it doesn’t bring Google’s personal spy built-in which is also a plus.

  • ZoubIWah

Id rather get the galaxy 7 edge than either. But ill keep my z3c for now, which lasts longer than any phone for sale. Sorta sad lol

  • Comte Junqueira

I don’t know where you live. But here in many parts of South America FM RADIO is still an issue. It comes very handy

  • joe

    no never

  • Vasilis Prantzos

The link is broken…I have tried to update the software through the Xperia phone companion holding the Alt button which supposedly installs the developer preview of Nougat but no luck.. I installed a Cyanogen Marshmallow which was great but the camera apps’ pictures were shittier than my Nexus 4 AOSP Nougat!!! So I went back to Sony’s software with the perfect camera app but with the awful battery life and that gets my phone to 1000 degrees Celcius after 5 minutes of 4g or taking pictures….Touchwiz might be worse but at least the camera app does not force close because of temperature after 5 minute use in the summer! And I have a white z5 compact not a black one!!!!!!

  • Taquidi

FM radio is great when you are traveling, since you are subject to blind-spots cellular signal or getting weak signal on the road. I have many such spots on my commute, there are places even 2G is unavailable. FM signal, on the other hand, is reachable even far from the antennas and never lags. FM radio doesn’t eat your data-limited plan. Also, FM radio is way less battery-consuming than webradio.

  • lebooo

I read an xda forum post that basically says that you can’t root any of the x-series phones without unlocking the bootloader, which causes you to lose some features of the phone. I don’t want to buy a phone that I can’t root. I also don’t want a phone bigger than the Compact but 5″ is ok. I can’t think of any other smaller high end phones besides pixel or x performance so I will pick the one that I can root. I am confident that pixel will get rooted, not at all confident that the the xz will get proper root. I really prefer the location of the fingerprint scanner on xperia devices and I think sony’s phones look better. I like their interface and apps which is why I’m sad that I don’t think I’ll go for any more xperia devices. I am also very saddened by how the new compact is no longer high-end or waterproof, it feels like they ditched people who want a high end phone that is not huge.

  • jokensy

If Huawei made the Google Pixel, it would have looked a million times better than this piece of crap…just saying.

  • EPGuest

I’m typing this on my Xperia XZ. God this phone is amazing.

  • jokensy

Xperia X series sucks, Google Pixel sucks, Samsung Note 7 explode, LG’s new flagships are ugly AF, iphone 7 sucks, 2016 really, really sucks!

  • Mac

Oh, yeah it’s interesting. Maybe you got a little bit more choosing between. The radiochannels here in Sweden are just embarrassing. They play like 15 different songs tops each month. Then they like change 3-4 of them and just repeat all the time.. And then they always talking about they having the best music at that moment.

  • Mac

Nice, cool information. Yeah that explains it. I mean I would probably just use offlinelists on my Spotify but I understand why it’s such big deal for you.
Sadly our radiostations are bad really bad. Playing the same music all the time leaving out so much of the real deal.

So another disappointment in leaving features behinds, first stamina mode (u know what I mean) then smal apps, which I really love.
Now lanyard and radio, just 2 name a few. What’s next, removing the camera button!? Or SD-slot..

  • ZoubIWah

ill replace the z3c when a phone has better battery life =/

  • Taquidi

Yes, that’s one drawback of having to rely on radio stations: sometimes you have to keep jumping from one to another trying to listen to something that doesn’t suck. It can be really annoying indeed. But anyway is still a choice when you can’t use webradio and you don’t feel like listening to your same music stored in the phone. Another point is that luckly in Brazil we still have radio stations that produce content (news, sports and political comments, entertainment programs) so being able to listen to FM without the hassle of needing data connection is important.
Anyway, I’m getting a Xperia XZ regardless of that because I already own a Sony SBH52 headset, which does have FM radio, so that’s going to replace the missing FM radio on the phone.

I’m also disappointed with the exclusion of small apps. I understand tha’s because of the split screen feature, let’s hope it really works well so it can replace the lovely small apps. If it doesn’t, I think they can put it back with software update if users demand it. Let’s see. Removing lanyard hole bothers me as well, even though I only use it sometimes, it’s great when your phone is primarily acting as a point-and-shoot camera as in travels.
    Cheers, mate.

  • Emil Oskarsson

You say you have the z3c and no that camera can’t compete with galaxy s7 note 7 or the iPhone 7. But I have the x performance and it is possible to get as good photos from it with the automatic mode as it is with the other phones we just talked about… Real life usage is usually much different compared to the result som reviewers get…. And it doesn’t have any oversharpening effect or lack of details that the Samsung phones can have in some daylight pictures…. :)

  • Emil Oskarsson

I haven’t had any overheating issues under normal circumstances when taking 1080p videos at 60fps. Longest video I have taken is like 25 min only though :p Yeah it did overheat during the summer at the beach when it was lying in the sun for 30 min xD but that’s normal to all phones I guess ;)

  • Z5 user here. You should check out the X series camera.
Personally, I think they’ve improved the timing, results and the experience in general.

  • theskig

    No Pixel, no new Xperia.
    Long life to my Z5p!

  • theskig

    Z3’s better than everything :)

  • Ben

I pick samsung galaxy over both… Sony better start making good phones with reasonable price!

  • Ben

How the speakers are? In my Xperia z3 the speakers became drastically lower after half year I wish they were good as Samsung.

  • Magwheelz

    Nope.. Sony all the way.

  • Frank Leone

Who ever comes out with a budget phone first but with Google I know that I will be getting firmware updates far longer than Sony

  • Edithajackson

  • Tibor Hornyák

    Hi

old animated weather app is available for XZ? do you know?

    thanks?

  • marcyff2

that depends on the IQ we are speaking of. If she has an IQ within 30 points (random number just to prove a point) of mine up or down it is not a discussion (hot wins). while if the IQ is much lower or higher then mine then it would be the closest to mine (if higher the hot, if lower the average). So it all depends on context. If i am that much smarter than her or if she is that much smarter than me, we will have problems as one of us won’t be engaging to the other person.

But yeah XZ for the win

  • fried_egg

Xperianet… your website is redirecting to malware downloading pop up adverts!

  • fried_egg

No… I would love to see Google take a crack at making the camera on the Xperia work the way they would do it… but no sd card, bland looks and i will stick with sony and it’s fashion statement design combined with great components.. if only the software worked as well as other makers seem to get them to… unless of course other makers are using speed test defeat devices to make them perform better in tests?

  • Angela

Yes. Fingerprint unlock is convenient and secure and it’s the only feature my Xperia Z2 is lacking. So I decided months ago it was a “must-have” feature for my next phone. Ideally, Sony would find a way to make all features available in the US. Until they do, I will happily support competitors that actually implement the features I want.

  • Darni187

No Way… My Sony Z5 is BOSS, thank you Master Google but Sony kills you at making phones.

  • RockStar2005

    ROFL. Yeah, where?!!

  • InspectorGadget80

Think ill wait till next year. And I also don’t want a iClone . I’ll wait and see how Sony update their models before switching back from Windows mobile

  • ZoubIWah

the x compact is at -50USD on amazon right now if that changes your mind (i prefer the XZ or Z3C myself but at 450USD it starts to be a better deal for the X compact for sure)

  • ZoubIWah

I am sometimes eyeing the XZ which looks pretty great (it in fact seems to more than hold its own vs the sgs7 edge, iphone7 and pixel) except for a couple of things:

    – the bezel at the bottom of the phone is necessarily large. I’d rather have a smaller phone than “nice symmetry”
    – battery life appears to be very average or below that according to reviews, which is not *bad* but much worse than the Z3C (the XC in fact seems to have pretty good battery life, maybe similar to the Z3C)

  • ZoubIWah

you know this is no longer “vanilla android” in the way nexus had it.
its AOSP + google special sauce. So sure, its google and im sure the software will be pretty good – but still. I don’t like that much.

  • ZoubIWah

Honestly, I just see the LGv20 as a “maybe” and the SGS7 edge as a “as good or better than the XZ”. So I wouldnt call it a waste of money.

The Edge has a better screen and low light camera, while the XZ is prettier, much better software (as in it doesnt fucking crash or slow down to a alt like Sammy’s), and their EIS doesn’t leave me wanting for OIS, its better than many phones with OIS right now in day light…

Oh yeah the Pixel does sux though. I can’t find any good thing about it compared to others. Including the unlimited storage, which I don’t feel is a real advantage.

  • ZoubIWah

The Z5 wasnt a great xperia to be honest. People say the heating issues has been fixed, though I could not verify myself.
The SGS7 wont be as smooth, but everything else WILL be better and I would rather have a SGS7 than a Z5. But I’d also rather have a Z3 than a SGS7. Or an XZ.

The Z3 is in fact, a much better phone. Does not over heat. Pictures arent much worse. Battery life beats Z5, SGS7, and almost every phone. Its still smooth, too.

Also, note that the SGS7 is a good bit bigger than the Z5C.

  • Ahmed Momen

are kidding my pixel best device with full Dev support
The highest rated smartphone camera. Ever.
With a best-ever 89 DxOMark Mobile score, Pixel’s camera lets you take brilliant photos in low light, bright light or any light. **
turn my camera on z z1 z2 z3 all of this in low light piece of shi….. and if like to be on 2 update and then nothing and sonydev not share driver of kernel so fucxxxxx sony after all that no custom rom on sony dev and if find one so u find bugs and alpha

  • Darrell Patterson

You bet I’m jumping ship, Sony refused to even look at my 15 month old Z3 so I’m going g with Google Fi.

  • Wilhelm-Bernhard Trometer

I got my xperia xz yesterday afternoone and for just having the phone in 24 hours for to be strait the xperia xz is the best phone you can by for monney rigth now call quality and sound quality and camera are excellent this is the very best smart sony ever produce batterylife is also top notch i have read alots about the xz and been watching review on you tube but i dont thrust any of them so the best reviewer is you self the customer whoe bys the phone and of course you need to have some knowledge about mobilephone and i would never change or prefer the xz over the pixel the xz i have the forest blue one has alot to offer

  • Mac

Aight, I can’t decide which device I should go for. Just wish the XZ came in a Compact version. That would’ve made the choice simple.
Now I can say X Compact is not even on consideration anymore. Thinking X performance, because of a bit more compact than XZ and probably going to hit a lower price point, will be the best choice even for me. But XZ is a bit more appealing I must say Haha

  • Michael

    short answer: YES

  • Emil Oskarsson

The main difference between the x performance and the xz is the added camera sensors which are really good, add that 5 and 3 axis image stabilisation to that aswell. Battery wise I think it’s a tie between the two, a day of battery life with 3.5-5h of on screen time depending on the user. Design wise I think the xz is better though :)

  • Mac

Actually I can get it very cheap but now it just feel so boring and lame. Lacking the most important features for me.
Water-resistans, real compact size as Z3C and good front-facing camera. Also processor not working that great with the new main camera. And the materials..

  • dimz

Imo, I’d prefer the XZ over the Pixel, but I wouldn’t mind one either. Pixel’s UI is tolerable enough to not miss the Xperia UI that much, though I still find Xperia UI much more usable.

  • Mac

Yeah the new improved camera is one main thing I really like. Checking with my operator it will only be 500sek more expensive with XZ atm. Going for a upgrade for X-mas I think.

  • Vasilis Prantzos

Thanks for the tips.. I know.. I love my Z5c (hardware). I will do some more experimenting with ROMs and keep it, not sell it for a GS7. And my next phone will probably be a Pixel, since I have absolutely no trust in Sony anymore!!

  • betatesterz
  • Matt

Yep, bas long as the feature is not too gimmicky, loke eye scanner. I’m fine with it.

  • Emil Oskarsson

You said SEK, are you from Sweden? :D Bought my X Performance for 5290 SEK (roughly 540 euros) and i got it on 4th of July :)

  • Mac

    Yeah I’m from Sweden ;P
That was a great price! Even cheaper than best price today!
Does Xperiablog work for you? had 2 visit disqus for replying this.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Haha no Xperiablog doesn’t work for me and I don’t work for them xD I use disqus on many sites so when I get a notification I answer via the notification page so to say :) which is on the disqus site :)

  • Mac

Haha lol, I ment the website not working ofc :D. I get a notification on Gmail and then when trying to reply I get redirected to the original webpage of the conversation.

  • Comte Junqueira

Postscript : Besides there’s no point in reducing the number of features that can be useful (like the ones in a Swiss knife) if you’re paying so much for a phone

  • MixoMaxoViper

Ok, I belive You because I have never owned X Performance…

  • Mac

Man, as I said to the other guy I was just curious since I thought it was something about the connectivity or so. Much like the BT problems Z5-series had or still have. I understand the issue and are with you on this. Said it before and do it again. There are many neat features that dissappears all the time. I’ll surly gonna miss the small apps feature when I upgrade next time for example. Peace!

  • Emil Oskarsson

Haha alright, I saw it was down earlier today xD

  • Comte Junqueira

Dear Mac I am not mad at you I’m mad at Sony. But you see: the small apps are software the FM involves hardware

  • Bezels for the win !

but SONY doesn’t have big bezels at all :( … those just appear to be big to some people . screen to body ratio doesn’t lie , Samsung S7 has bigger bezels compared to XZ .

  • Bashar Shehab

Sorry to break it for you, but your Z3 is 24 months old..

  • No, not the Google Pixel, but OnePlus.

  • Kunzite

Picking a Google Pixel over a Sony Xperia, that’s definitely something I just didn’t ;)

  • marcyff2

Can i ask. Does it have wireless charging? No one on xda seems to have an answer.

  • Darrell Patterson

Sorry to break it to you Mr. Know It All, it was 15 months old when it broke and Sony refused to fix it because it was off warranty. I never said it was 15 months old at this moment. Use some sense, man.

  • dbjungle

It’s certainly on par with Sony phones as far as price, but it’s ugly as sin. It looks like an iPhone and an M10 had an ugly baby. The A9’s brother. No thanks.

  • Aloka Shashinath

Why Sony still not having it’s own Ai assistant? And also they should need to consider the thickness of the device. It’s much bigger compare to other devices

  • deekbee

You do realise that the DXO “reviews” are utterly useless, don’t you? They have no bearing on the real world results, and often appear to be “bought reviews”.

  • John Caddell Sparky

Neither, until Sony change the speaker, I’m not going back for Sony. But I do love the new design. The X Compact is very easy to hold and everything is smooth due to 720p. To be honest, I feel like X Compact is faster than X Performance.

  • Andys42

I have the Z5 premium. As Sony have not come up with an equivalent replacement I have actually been looking at the new Lenovo phab 2 pro, which is one of the first Tango phones. Seems to have a lot of good features including 4Gb RAM and 64Gb storage, but only a 2K screen, not the 4K one I really like on the Z5. Tango is Googles new Augmented Reality addition to Android and looks like it could be an interesting function.
Really wish Sony would come up with a REAL replacement for the Z5 Premium.

  • Wilhelm-Bernhard Trometer

There is a new software update availible for the new xperia xz is 79 MB via o.v.a i downloade it for hour ago check it out

  • Billy

Xperia XZ does not have wireless charging.

  • Bashar Shehab

You better look at how long the warranty last before buying next time

  • Darrell Patterson

Very few phones have more than a 1 year warranty.

  • HAWX

Man 2K and 4K are really good and similar I think. 4K is a plus but will you go for the 8K If there is one :)

  • Andys42

Nah, as you say, 2K and 4K are good enough, cannot even see the dots with a magnifying glass on 4K screen, but I have 4K content including SkyQ so its nice. Was hoping Sony would bring out a tablet with 4K but they still only have the Z4 with 2K. The main thing though is the new ‘flagship XR’ is 1K so I started looking at alternatives.

  • Andys42

Nah, as you say the 2K and 4K are much the same. I just have 4K content such as SkyQ so like having the 4K screen. Wish Sony would release a table with a 4K screen. Suppose the main thing in this thread is that I would not class the latest handsets from Sony as flagships, which is why I started looking at alternatives. I would not consider a Pixel to be in the same league as Sony and I would go for a Tango phone if I move from the Z5.

  • Shamoy Rahman

Xperia = stock + a lot of needed features
Nexus/Pixel = stock but lacks a ton of useful things

I would prefer the XZ’s camera over the Pixel or Pixel XL’s anyday, the XZ is just unbeatable in daylight photography. Also the lack of waterproofing on the Pixels are a huge letdown. Also considering that price point, there is no benefit of getting the Pixel over the XZ. The only thing that’s better is the AMOLED display and it really doesn’t make a big difference.

  • Shamoy Rahman

It will give leave the Pixel in 2nd place ;)

  • Shamoy Rahman

You can buy a wireless charging reciever which is only $10 and is paper thin, it plugs into your Type-C port and you can hide it inside your case. I use it to get wireless charging on my Z3 :D

  • Shamoy Rahman

Xperia X sucks, not the XZ

  • Ailan Hidaz

Having bought the XZ, I love the smoothness of the device, and the camera is superb. But the real issue with this phone isn’t hardware or software related – it’s the lack of accessories!
There’s literally no case or screen protector available anywhere.
It’s tragic since there are literally a billion cases and accessories for the Z series floating around, and almost none that I can see for the X series. :(

  • Bashar Shehab

    True, that’s what I’m saying

  • Spencer

I upgraded to the X Performance the day after Google announced the Pixel phones. I was holding out, hoping the the Pixel line would bring something new, but I think I’ll let Google figure itself out and avoid their first device. The X Performance is so fast and works great. It has built in support and all of the features a Pixel would give me and then some. Plus, Sony is an experienced phone manufacturer. I can’t wait for the Nougat update on my device!

  • Matt

yes judge the phone before its even out.

yes on design front sony is miles ahead. but software ? its 60% of the phone.

  • Taquidi

I found it easy to buy some cases and screen protectors for my XZ. Just check eBay, AliExpress and Amazon and you’ll see lots of those accessories.

  • Ailan Hidaz

Yeah they have cases and accessories, but none of them are on the level of “high quality”. The few I tried out feel like they were made by a bunch of chimps.

  • xxolvrdrmxx

After 13 years of using Sony Ericsson/Sony phones (T68i, W300, W350, W508, Xperia X10, Xperia Ion, Xperia Z1s and Xperia Z3), I have switched to something else. It’s the end of an era for me. I decided to pre-order the Google Pixel XL. I loved all my Sony phones with regards to hardware, design and the almost vanilla android OS. Not a fan of iOS nor Samsung’s heavily customized version of android. None of them, I think, was ever on par with Sony’s designs and hardware. Sony usually took the lead in advancing the technology on the phone (4K video, waterproofing, camera, etc.). Although I’m disappointed with not having SD card slots and waterproofing for the Pixel XL (Had to order 128 GB, which was soo expensive), I’m excited about all the other features of the phone. Finally, a pure android experience with regular updates and not having to wait years (if they even come especially if it’s locked with a carrier). On that note, I was definitely considering XZ as well as the Z5/ Z5 Premium. The Xperia X Performance was not doing it for me, too blaahhh on the design even if it has monster hardware specs. Also, no fingerprint reader in the US? Come on now, Sony. Anyways, wish me luck with Pixel XL. I’ll miss you Sony, maybe we’ll see each other again someday. Hopefully, by then, you can keep up with the updates and fix those ever lingering software bugs on the phone that I’ve grown to love anyways.

  • ducksonetime

I’ve had an Xperia Z, Z1, Z2, Z3C and now a XZ. The camera is always the worst thing about the phone. My Z3C has TERRIBLE dynamic range and had a tendency to over-expose. My XZ over-sharpens all the photos to the point of losing more detail through artifacts than gained from the sharpening.

I love pretty much everything else about the phones, but the cameras are always behind the competition. It’s pretty disappointing as I just switched back to Sony from a Nexus 6P which took such great photos. It also used a Sony sensor which just adds insult to injury…

  • Emil Oskarsson

Oversharpening? Nothing I have a problem with on my x performance, always get a pretty clean shot with lots of details and does not over expose that frequently. When I compare my photos with photos from the Galaxy s7 for example, I do see oversharpening and lack of details and a insanely wrong colour temperature in the Galaxy s7 photos :p

  • Brad Williams

Reading thru the comments. Has anyone here ever realised if you can feel the heat from your Xperia, your phone’s thermals are doing their job. That is, the heat from the CPU is being dissipated into the glass and away from the CPU. Ergo, longer life span for you. If you can’t feel some heat, it is possible the heat is locked inside the phone with the potential of frying components.

  • ducksonetime

That is the ugliest phone that has been released in a long time…

  • Xperia User Rant :
Here we go again, People! Wake up, You know that the camera on The Sony Xperia sucks! No fully camera2 api, No Raw Support!, No Manual Control!. I just seem to hate That Sony didn’t optimize their smartphones camera. WHY SONY?.. By the way I didn’t have Xperia XZ nor the x series lineup. Oh and the Xperia XZ lack OIS stabilization. But judging From my usage from Xperia Z, Z1, Z2 and Z3 the camera is worse, or we need to install XDA dev camera mod to our device. FYI : I don’t have xperia X series smartphone. My judging is based on My usage of the Xperia Z series lineup.
I wanna change to other brands, but It seems that I just can’t.Using a Sony Smartphone is a Great Xperience (No Puns intended).
