Xperia X is new flag-bearer for Sony’s Concept for Android software

in Android, Firmware, Xperia X series

xperia-x-concept-installer_1Sony Mobile has today announced that the company’s Concept for Android software, which we love by the way, will now be heading to Xperia X owners in Europe. Sony’s Concept software enables the Xperia developer teams to push the latest and, sometimes, experimental features to users and to get feedback from the passionate community.

Don’t assume that you will just get buggy software though. What we loved about the Concept for the Xperia Z3 is how stable the software was and with good battery life too. The developer team has been very open with the community, engaging regularly. Other positives included regular firmware releases with the latest security releases and detailed changelogs – this is something we hope will extend to Sony’s normal software rollout at some point.

Xperia X users will get to play with Concept for Android 7.0 Nougat, which is a great incentive to sign up. Sony says that the Concept will also include a sneak-peek at some of the latest features that will be part of future Xperia products. Users on the Concept software have the choice between receiving software on a stable track (around once a month) and on an experimental track (as often as once a week). This preference can be chosen through the inTouch application settings.

Unfortunately, this also means that Concept releases for the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact will likely come to an end, mainly due to the fact that the handset will not be updating to Android Nougat.

Who is the new Concept for Android for?

The Xperia X Android Concept will only be available to owners of the single SIM Xperia X variant (F5121). Right now, it is also only available to those in Europe, although this may change in the future.

How can I sign up?

Head over to the Google Play Store, download the “Concept Installer” application and follow the steps. Once you have registered in the app, you will receive a software update notification (usually within 24 hours), enabling you to install the new Concept software on your device. You can find more details here.

NOTE: You will lose all data, so make sure you backup anything you want to keep.

You can get a discount on an Xperia X if you were part of the Xperia Z3 Concept

Good news, if you were part of the Xperia Z3/Z3 Compact Concept programme and had signed up to the inTouch feedback app before the 22 September 2016, then Sony is offering you a 20% discount on the price of a new Xperia X through the Sony Mobile Store in Europe.

To order, had over to the Sony Mobile Store and purchase your phone as normal. Then enter your Xperia Z3 or Z3 Compact IMEI number into the voucher code. This should automatically apply the discount.

Terms and conditions: The discount will only be available until the end of 2016. The discount is available in the following countries: UK/FR/DE/ES/PT/IT/NL/PL/CZ/SE/DK/NO/FI

  • SamTroll

I wish Sony would made concept or the beta programme available for z5 (which I own incidentally)

  • CerberusSco

I’ve got to say this, but I love it. Few things missing such as a restart option and stamina mode (may be these are hidden somewhere), but the phone feels speedier, smoother and it looks so crisp and clean. I’ll reserve judgement on battery life until I’ve hammered the hell out of my handset later on. However, I’m really impressed, massive thumbs up Sony, for once.

  • Srijan Chawla

Screenshots of the new stuff please :)

  • CerberusSco

    I’m working on it :)

  • skrug

Owned a Z5, didn’t get concept. Now own a XZ, probably not going to get concept either, sigh

  • Srijan Chawla

Has the phone app & contacts app changed ??

  • CerberusSco

I’ve just added a few more. The phone app and contacts app have changed.

  • Srijan Chawla

I saw, also can you post a picture of the InCall UI? Thank You :)

  • CerberusSco

    Done :D

  • Srijan Chawla

Damn, they used the Stock one, I wish it was the one like in the new Pixel Phones :(

  • Raj Singh

Sony has lost its way. They need to be taken over.

  • CerberusSco

It would seem you can also now block numbers from calling and messaging you from within the call log menu and messaging app, which is a bonus. I have used 3% battery taking screenshots, making a few calls (on loudspeaker) and uploading screenshots. If I had of done that on the old firmware, I would of used way above the 3%, so battery life is amazing.

I’m a bit puzzled they have left out the Restart option, may be that will be added in a future update. Also, themes seem to be missing, hence my crappy wallpaper.

I apologise for the slightly poor edits of my private information on my uploaded screenshots. I just wanted to do a very quick edit and get them uploaded for people as quickly as I could.

  • has anyone tried with other Xperia devices than Xperia X?

I was courious and installed Concept installer app on my Z5 and I am on the last step where i need just press it yes, to install it.

I know, dumb move by me, but hey, i am very unpatient for the nougat update :D

  • azzido

It still looks and feels too stock :(
Sony is doing notking to chaange their boring UI. Boring because since years it is the same, and only getting more and more stock… I bought XZ and still the same. If they will not chabge it for XZ I will be moving to other brand finally.

Too many years of the same :(

  • lolop

    It won’t work…

  • Zohaib

    Ha ha ha
Then go and buy other company phone
Iphone & samsung company UI also same from years, just a little change
You should be bore from other brands also after start using them

  • HAWX

You don’t know about Grace UX do you?

  • Zohaib

    Its also look same

  • Khillo81

The Play Store won’t allow me to install it on my Z5C. Says it’s incompatible. Proceed with caution…

  • ducksonetime

I can’t tell you how annoyed I am that the concept firmware is on the Xperia X and not the XZ.

  • Spencer

That looks so good. I miss the Concept software on my Z3 :( I was hoping that the Concept would come to the X Performance. Oh well. I’m looking forward to Nougat on my X Performance!

  • Utsav Shah

would have thought of if it was for XZ.

  • Mustafa Sezer

Please give feedback about to be same color with status bar as tinted on dialer, settings etc..

    And recording video as well.

  • Enzo Z

I’ve lost the possibility to have different wallpapers for lockscreen and home screen, i can’t set different ringtones importing them from memory, i can’t set different clock on the lockscreen, i’ve lost several contacts.. i’m lost

  • Khillo81

Yes, I know about APKMirror. However, I’m wondering whether it’s a good idea to install it on a non-compatible phone. Have you? Is it working? I’m also impatient when it comes to new software and want to try Nougat ASAP but don’t want to risk anything since this is my only phone

  • lolop

Props for going to such lengths for another Sony fan. I’m from Scotland too btw.

  • CerberusSco

    You’re welcome

  • CerberusSco

    Will do :)

  • Mustafa Sezer

Thanks a lot, and i almost forget to say that small apps to back again :)
I said 3 things to reporting to you.

  • the same thing bro, also Z5 is my first Sony phone, and I don´t know anything about recovering the device. My previously android phone was Samsung Galaxy S+ back in 2011 I think, and believe me, that phone was impossible to destroy, during the flash process, I sometimes used to unplug usb cable, and be able to do start again flashing without any problems. But many things have changed since then.

I am courious because when you install this app, everything is going fine, seems app doesn´t recognize what phone is actually.

´Well, only thing we can do is to wait for official release, I am prepared already, russian firmware is already on my phone :D

  • azzido

Yes, it looks like I will need to change the brand to have different UI, no matter other brands stick to similar ui or not, for me it will be new (for some time). It is the only way to have different loom and feel. Sony does not want to change, then I will need to change Sony for something less stock.

  • ZoubIWah

The more i use my new phone the more i regret my sony lol.
I’d love an X performance that would be to Z levels. The size/form is great, barely bigger than the compact, still handles well.
The XZ is a bit much of a beast.

  • ZoubIWah

i dont understand the problem with “looking stock”
    its super stable, super smooth.
i use the touchwiz ui on the sgs7 (MY MAIN PHONE) and its shit compared to stock. stutters every now and then AND its a mess.

    I just dont get it.

  • Michael Wiedemann

What a pity that the performance is not included…

  • Bashar Shehab

    Your fault.

  • Bashar Shehab

Guess what, that’s the point of Concept Software. Stop nagging about something you know nothing about.

  • Enzo Z

Yeah i know, although i don’t know if it’s really my fault for everything. In the meantime, i’ve already restored the old firmware.

  • So0o

    New update for Sony xperia xz… 39.0.A.3. 30 … still 6.0.1….Nothing new only 1 november 2016 security…. And maybe a Little fast…. I dont know yet….

  • Enzo Z

Is It possible to unsubscribe, avoiding to receive the notification of software’s update?

  • kj marway

All seems well, aside from the horrendous Equaliser, which has essentially halved my loudspeaker output, whilst the sound through headphones has become almost unbearable.

  • Simon Giesen

I am on the Concept train with my Xperia X. Really speedy and neat. But: Everybody who would like to try out or even switch should know:

    – NO Support for PS4 Remote Play
    – NO Support for High Res Audio
    – NO Support for aptX or LDAC codec, B&W P5, P7 or Sony’s own MDR-1000x sound like trash
    – NO XReality Engine
    – NO Whitebalance Settings, no way to get rid off that bluish tint
    – NO Stamina Mode
    – USB Audio Out limited to 16bit, 44.1KHz – no chance to use serious USB DAC components, Sony’s own MDR-1A DAC headphones with DSD support sound like trash now

  • Tim Bakx

Can anyone share the intouch apk? Ive seem to have lost mine…

  • Roh_Mish

Battery life is a bit better for me.

  • Roh_Mish

It’s similar. Just instead of Odin packages we use ftf.

  • Didn’t You see that newest flagships (named like this official or not) never got the Concept?
Z3+ was out, so Z3 got Concept, Xp and XZ are out, so X got Concept….
I think it’s a way to sell more older devices even if there is better one already.

  • Is there a way to get or how it is downloaded by the app? I know that there is no .ftf file, so don’t even ask for it.

  • skrug

Then the z3+ should have gotten the marshmallow concept and not the z3.
