Sony aims to be first manufacturer to release Android 7.1.1 (outside Google)

by XB on 8th December 2016

in Android, Firmware, Xperia X series

android_nougatSony Mobile’s Concept team is ambitiously targeting to be the first manufacturer outside of Google to release Android 7.1.1 Nougat. This latest update adds a number of features including a restart option in the power menu (at long last) and the image keyboard for supported apps.

Sony’s dev team said that “this is our (the Concept teams) number 1 priority” and that “if you spot any other vendor (excluding Google) releasing this faster than us, prepare your rotten tomatoes!

The Xperia Concept developer team currently has the source code and is waiting for the application suite (GMS apps) and the Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) from Google. There is no firm timeline on when Xperia X users running Concept firmware will see the latest Android 7.1.1 release, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as it is out. We hope that this ambition from the Concept team means that we’ll see a quick update on standard Xperia firmware too.

  • Zayed Kotayba

Alot of good news are coming from SONY these days and it seems like they are finally going somewhere with this new strategy

  • Prince Mensah

Glad to hear this but all the same they should take their time and release the firmware….and please Sony add some features of your own…please don’t make it too stock…it becomes stale after a while…thank you

  • RockStar2005

I sure hope so Zayed! lol Now they just need to forget about that “scaling back” garbage with its U.S. customers and start treating us like we ACTUALLY MATTER!! lol Enable fingerprint software in the U.S. Xperia phones, release them on time (within one month of announcing) EVERYTIME, start advertising more here AND reestablish carrier support with T-Mobile, etc etc, INCLUDING making sure the phones sold her have VoLTE. And start being more competitive with sound quality.

This isn’t 2014………… with POWERHOUSE audio smartphones out like the HTC 10 and most especially the LG V20, Sony is no longer the best sounding smartphone anymore it seems. They need to step it up more!! I’ve listened to the 10 and the V20, and they both sound amazing. The V20’s headphone amp alone (not even DAC) wipes the floor with Sony’s weaker amp (which Sony does on purpose to save battery life). Oh and also, very important………put BIGGER batteries in the phones. The 2-Day Battery Life Promise DIED with the Z series it seems. Sony Mobile needs to fix that. I have the int’l Sony Xperia X Performance, and its battery life is awful! I just hope with Nougat that changes at least somewhat, but then all the other phones will improve too. My X Perf seems to have the worst battery life, and the XZ’s isn’t much farther ahead. Maybe about 30-40 min better.

  • Vladimir

its ok.. but where is android 7 for Z5 compact?

  • azzido

What is the point to be the fastest if you are releasing just pure stock Android? You are not spending efforts on deliverig specific user experience (Xperia UI became stock ugly UI without any changes, without any taste).

They are not modifying the launcher at all (icons, animations, wallpapers remains same since device was released- no new) so it is just copy paste action.

  • Román Rodríguez

I want to know that too

  • Don_Alduck

Seems like Sony is getting their £$*! together finally. I hear a lot of news about Sony nowadays and most of them are positive. Let’s hope that they stick with this plan :)

  • Petrohead

“Enable fingerprint software in the U.S. Xperia phones” – They can’t do that because HP own the patent for it. So unless you wish Sony to have to pay HP for every single device sold in the US, and therefore pay more for your Sony handset, suck it up princess. Just reflash to a different country’s firmware and then you get the sensor. Really, that’s all it is. They are simply not allowed to sell the fingerprint sensor in the power button enabled out of the box. Nothing stops people from enabling it themselves.

  • RockStar2005

lol So why is it EVERY OTHER COMPANY has a fingerprint sensor on their U.S. phones then? Pay more? No, Sony already charges too much as it is. THEY need to suck it up and grow some balls and quit being so afraid to take the throne here in the U.S.! lol

Reflashing is BS. We shouldn’t have to do that stuff if other companies don’t make us do it. They’re not some no-name company, they’re Sony. In other countries where they are actually AGGRESSIVE like Sweden (and other European countries), they advertise their phones and have carrier support. And there from what someone I know who lives there told me, Sony is about as big as Samsung is. Tired of Sony Mobile’s moronic executives and their weirdo decision-making. They don’t capitalize on their name and reputation at all here when it comes to smartphones. I’m just tired of seeing them play second fiddle to Apple and Samsung.

  • Izzat Ismail

HP patented fingerprint scanner on POWER BUTTON and look where Sony put fingerprint scanner on Xperia, yeah that’s right, POWER BUTTON.

  • Actman

Cut the crap SONY. You can talk about this sh*t after the promised devices (Z4 to X Compact) being upgraded to Nougat! I mean what’s the point of being a first manufacturer of 7.1.1 whilst the older and affordable devices got abandoned? Making any sense?

  • RockStar2005

Yeah but LG has their fingerprint sensor on the power button, and they sell their phones directly in the U.S. too, even through carriers I might add too! lol

    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/09/hands-on-with-the-lg-v20-a-big-improvement-over-the-lg-g5/

So I still don’t see why Sony Mobile can’t do this too.

  • Petrohead

Dude, the LG sensor is on THE BACK of the phone. Sony’s fingerprint sensor is INSIDE the power button. Remove your head from your rectal passage and actually read what you’re being told. Better yet, research for yourself.
LG’s sensor can WAKE the phone LIKE a power button, but it still has a SEPARATE power button.

  • RockStar2005

Whatever man. No need for the insults.

Even if what you’re saying is true, it’s still ridiculous to make U.S. customers have to go the extra mile for Sony Mobile. They already take forever (at times) to release new phones, the battery life on the XP and XZ is like the worst rated right now, and you can’t even get their phones through carriers, which means I can’t enable VoLTE on my Xperia X Performance, which is BS. HTC wasn’t TOO CHEAP to get the unlocked 10 both VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling certified with T-Mobile, so what’s Sony’s excuse there?

    http://www.tmonews.com/2016/04/unlocked-htc-10-is-fully-compatible-with-t-mobile-including-volte-and-wi-fi-calling/

How the F did HP get the patent on that anyway? They don’t even make phones, just really sh*tty computers and printers. I know first-hand they’re sh*tty too. Every person who I know that has HP including me had issues with their products within 1-2 years of buying them.

  • Squirtle 1

I hope the xz will get better performance as the z3

  • Emil Oskarsson

This fast development of new Android
software is exactly what Sony should aim for their whole Xperia line up. Then they would truly be one the fastest to update their phones aswell :) Although Sony was one of the first manufacturers to update some phones to Android nougat in Sweden. I have yet to recieve that update though xD

  • Emil Oskarsson

This team is not dealing with the ordinary updates from Sony so go whine somewhere else. Have you seen nougat starting to roll for the Galaxy s6 for example?….

  • Marc Heydorn

Go for Android 7 on the Z3C! Google dropped Vulkan as a requirement for Android N!

  • Geese Howard

I don’t think they need to rush it, good things usually come with patience. I rather they give us a stable and good update than a Nougat that is all melted and blows up easily. You guys know what I mean :)

  • Shehab Skull

So .. Sony decided to be the fastest company to realise updates .. it is OK but they forgot to create their own ui , it is not a race ! -__- and we are not google users to get this stock ui ( 90% to stock ) I mean please .. Look at their phonebook app in nougat , just the stock one but with blue colour , I also can’t forget how they removed their awesome Keyboard and replaced it with a fuckin 3rd party app that every one can easily install ! As a sony user ,, I am not special as I were at the past .. the latest ” innovation ” from Sony was the kitkat when they was really having their own ui .. SONY IS DYING

  • Bashar Shehab

In Nought you can install Xperia Keyboard from APKMirror. Sony need teh moneh so they partnered with SwiftKey. And I don’t mind the UI now it’s much better.

  • Bashar Shehab

    Stop whining for fuck sake

  • Bashar Shehab

It’s not pure stock Android. Try Concept software then talk shit. It’s close but Sony has added a good amount of stuff to the software.

  • Yuen Lui

Best joke of the year. Using my Xperia TX running cm14 and waiting for android 7 on my Z5 Compact

  • razorg

    Did they? :O Source?

  • Robert Dunn

I personally don’t mind the near-stock look. If it makes it faster for them to release OS updates then more power to them. Would you rather have a heavily-customized UI and wait 6-8 months for an update to the latest version of Android?

  • Marc Heydorn

I only have a source in German, but if you have a look at the android 7 Compatibility Definition paper here: http://static.googleusercontent.com/media/source.android.com/en/compatibility/android-cdd.pdf you will see, that on page 13 that there requirements for Android devices supporting Vulkan and devices not supporting Vulkan.

  • Marcus

Seeing that it has rolled for the XZ and X preformance without glitches in the last week or so it would seem that they are on course to get this out fairly soon.

  • Ammar

Then Sony needs to NOT PUT FINGERPRINT SCANNERS WHERE THEY CAN’T EVEN USE THE FUCKING SCANNER

  • Arcest

All Sony Xperia devices starting on Sony Xperia Z should receive the latest version of android, even if it’s a paid update. (each time you want to update pay for example $15 or $20 to support developers).

  • Arcest

Also Sony should improve the camera on their smartphones. I would like that my Z5 Compact had the same camera that an iPhone has.

  • Moisés

    Yeaaaaaaaah !!!!!

  • Moisés

People who understand about camera say z5 is the best of 2015…
    Manual mode, of course….

  • Moisés

Keyboard is different on X, the z will keep

  • Arcest

Z5 Compact very poor in low light, just see review on youtube.

  • Moisés

X is the next, then z5 and z4

  • Moisés

    They have smartphones too..
    Elite X3 runs Windows
There were a phablet, 6″ android 4.4.. SLATE 6 its name

  • ducksonetime

Tell it to Qualcomm – they won’t release Vulkan drivers for the SD801 or earlier SoCs which means no Nougat.

  • Thai de Campos

This news reminds me of my brand new z3 compact, that had an android update and the gps stopped working. After being fooled by sony for months, denying the problem, they later replaced the whole core of the cell phone. After this disappointment, I don’t buy sony anymore. I’m happy with a Samsung now.

  • razorg

    http://www.sammobile.com/2016/12/09/official-nougat-release-for-the-galaxy-s7-will-start-with-android-7-1-1/

It didn’t take long for Samsung to reply to Sony’s move. It basically says “The official Nougat release for GS7 will be 7.1.1, not 7.0 as in the beta”…

  • Łukasz Leszczyński

Vulcan is not an issue. Adreno 330 lacks of OpenGL 3.2 support…

    From Android 7.0 Compatibility Definition:
“Device implementations MUST support OpenGL ES 3.2.
Device implementations MUST support Vulkan Hardware Level 0 and SHOULD support
    Vulkan Hardware Level 1.”

Level 0 – as I understand is lack of driver support, but ability to tell it to apps.

  • According to Sony’s calendar maybe. In Italy we still have to receive the update for Xperia Compact that came out more than a month ago..

  • Thats great, but when?

  • Vlado
  • Hideg Jenő Péter

you linked that site but gave me 404 error.

  • Dilipkumar

    Z5 is a good flagship
And z5 is the first finger print sensor phone for Sony
And 0.03 sec autofocus camera awesome

  • Moisés

    Which phone you have?

  • ChicO85T

That’s not an official update by Samsung, seeing as how it says cyanogenmod nightly right on your screenshot….good try though

  • Vlado

I got Xperia X, but screen is from my secondary phone Samsung Galaxy S3 with cyanogenmode 14.1 in base Android 7.1.1

  • Vlado

I know, but I can send rotten tomatoes to SONY devs :-D

  • Arcest

    Flash the UK official rom.

  • RockStar2005

Oh ok. That sux that HP has the patent. I still think considering how much Sony charges for these phones that they should’ve have to raise the price just to cover the patent fee costs for the U.S. phones.

  • NICLAS

    You are so stupid:-S

  • NICLAS

Bam and the race is on, who’s gonna win first outside Google to have just one phone/tablet updated to 7.1.1 Sony or samsung it’s gonna be nice to see:-)

  • Wilhelm-Bernhard Trometer

You can also install the xperia keboard when your xperia x are what ever xperia device you have with marshmellow i did it on my two xperia xz and it works perfect the swifty keyboard is useless

  • Hi, We XperiaOverlay released our fourth version of our system.
This new release v4.0 bring android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with the Xperia X firmware as a base for these devices : Sony Xperia SP, Xperia V, Xperia T, TL, TX.

We are also doing final stability tests on the Xperia L and M ( single SIM and dual SIM)
the firmware will be released this month.

We will also extend the firmware to more devices next month, including :
    Xperia S, SL, ION, Xperia Z, Z1, Z1 Compact , and the Xperia M2.

The firmware brings also the android 6.0.1 internal memory management feature that are not present in the manufactured firmwares of android 6.0.1 by Sony, Samsung etc…

that option allows to use the SD card as internal memory with that feature inside, it makes more sense than ever for all these older devices to be updated since the lack of internal memory is no longer an issue.

We also made our oldest firmwares v2.2 (Kitkat for Xperia 2011 line ) and V3.5 ( Lollipop 5.0.2 for 2012 / 2012 line of xperia devices) Free

here are the threads on XDA :
    V2.2 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2799730
    V3.5 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/xperia-overlay-2012-2013-line-5-0-2-t3513338

PS : Note that the paid version is not releated to the firmware but to the Xperia Overlay Update Center APP for Windows and Linux
and the server unlimited download posibility since its a direct link, and can be downloaded any moment by connecting to the user acount

    Website : http://www.xperiaoverlay.com

Pleas make the Xperia community informed of our hard work and dedication we showed during these years

Have a nice and pleasant day

    Sincerely XperiaOverlay

  • Hi, XperiaBlog Pleas make a post about the new XperiaOverlay firmware the Xperia community need to be informed of our work, we can understand that ther is priority, but posting about a theme and not about XperiaOverlay ?

We provide somethink that no one else is providing, all xperia users that wants a update from sony can have it from us, we are doing reverse engineering, somethink way too dificult and more time consuming than sony is doing, without the critical informations that a developer need we release stable firmwares identical with the Original Xperia Firmware with only one diference, which is the Theme engine that we use from Cyanogenmod Instead.

We are offering our customers unlimited download and unlimited speed for download and all of that without advertisements, and virus free website.

and recently we made the v25 and v3 versions of our firmware free for everyone with the XOUC (Xperia Overlay Update Center) App. which provide automatic installation for pepole that do not know about recovery custom rom/kernel etc…

Pleas at least let us know what is the reason that you were ignoring us for such a long time
AndroidHeadline, Techtime, AndroidCantral and many many more are informing about us , but XperiaBlog you guys made a post for our first version that was released in XDA and than nothing.

we need to make pepole informed, just search around the web, even on your own blog, pepole wants updates from sony and not AOSP or CM, cause even if they are stable they miss the Official Xperia UI with official apps, camera etc..
We are ofering that, our firmwares have everithink original xperia firmware of the latest device,
we started to work on android N, but we need to have somme users and supporters behind us to help us deliver, we have to purchase smartphones to work on, we purchase materials and putting all of our time on this project, its not a custom rom made by a developer on his free time, its a firmware transformed to source code by reverse engineering, device tree and kernel made for the firmware, then merged all of that to AOSP, build the firmware and optimized the firmware for speed and stability. and in that process specially in kernel developement, devices get broken, materials used get broken somme new materials are needed etc…

we provide a professional work, and that is to put smiles on peapoles faces,

we only ask you this : Help us put more smiles on pepoles faces.

    Sincerely
    XperiaOverlay

  • Adam Varney

I would rather have kept MM until 7.1.1 was ready.
    7.0 is a bit ‘beta’.

  • azzido

No, I would rather have more customized (does not means heavily) UI and still have it fast like 2 months, not 8…

  • HAWX

Yeah, once Sony was about it’s own style opposing to the more basic stock ones, now it is almost like stock, sad.

  • HAWX

Sony makes great headphones, but their headphone jack and volume just sucks from Xperia Z to XZ (except Z3). Even in Xperia Z5 Premiummyass lel. S7 series exynoss variants htc 10 v20 iphone and Axon blows the Xperias in that area. Sony phones are much larger but have less battery. Sony still can’t keep up.

  • HAWX

End user does not have to give a shit about why there is no fingerprint functionality on a smartphone not even a research. Sony’s one could be always on like LG and Huawei did or do something new like the one on the upcoming S8. And If it is not legal, soon Sony or end users (unlikely) would have to pay a fine becuse flashing is not illegal since it does not void warranty. And still, If the fingerprint sensor is not working after you have flashed or it is damaged because of water jets, you won’t have the right to give phone back to warranty. So the PROBLEM is STILL there, If somebody wants to use fingerprint sensor.

  • RockStar2005

Yeah. I had the Z3…..so it was louder than the rest? I have the X Performance now, but I use a premium amp/DAC (Oppo HA-2) when I listen to my headphones, so don’t really ever use phone directly for that. It would be nice if they were louder, I agree. Even their Walkmans are limited. They have great battery life, but it’s almost TOO good. lol I’d rather they scale back and let more volume come through. I had the A17 Walkman so I know that firsthand.

I had the $299 Sony MDR-1A headphones. It was great overall, but a bit too bassy for me, so I sold out after several months. Super comfy though. I don’t know how their pricier headphones are with respect to bass though. Hopefully it’s less. When you can’t hear certain details in the mids & highs clearly, that’s an issue. At least for ppl with taste. lol I love bass though, but not over everything else. No way.

Yes. The 2-Day Battery Life promise it seems DIED with the Z series. It’s not like that anymore. My XP can’t even make it through a full day (i.e. 6am-9pm). I JUST got the Nougat update today though, so I’m hoping that helps it some. They need use bigger batteries but yeah don’t let the phone get too bulky. It’s just a matter of redesigning the body.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Why can’t they be normal like other OEMs or be like NexusPixel devices and add the fingerprint scanner in the back of the device?
    It’s that simple.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

I agree with you and sadly you and I both know that Sony won’t listen to any of these.
    – No RAW capturing,
    – Battery is getting bigger at the negative side,
    – No QHD display yet,
    – Stamina is dead,
    – Stereo speakers are not loud anymore.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

My noise cancellation headset goes haywire after MM. Sometimes it doesn’t detect properly. I thought it might a problem with the headset but it’s not. :(

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

2 day battery life died when they decided to reduce the capacity and tried to gain it via software. I mean when they can do it with both they went and reduced the capacity. Maybe they were thinking about charging the phone fast with fast-charge, that also failed cause Sony’s at the last place when it comes to charging it.
I honestly like what Samsung doing with their battery management even though I’d never get one(Never a fan of Touchwiz/Grace UI)

  • RockStar2005

    Sony………..listen?? ROFLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Bigger?? My XP’s battery size is 2700 mAh. LOL My Z3’s was 3100. They need to GET bigger!

Yeah Stamina Mode (at least so far) has been crap on my XP. We’ll see what this new Nougat update I just got this morning does, if anything.

They seem loud enough to me, but I no longer have my Z3 to compare.

I wouldn’t mind QHD but first Sony needs f’ing go back to bigger batteries again and improve Stamina Mode! lol

  • Shehab Skull

Why not Sony just make it available to download from google play ? and yes I know it is working on nougat but not fully working .. for example learning words aren’t there ..

  • Shehab Skull

yup and after every update they make their UI closer to stock .. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/854b5c14f8bcb9a77bb107efcb2d5c177cf802260e48e3753a5f7b04c7243a61.jpg
this is the new version of phonebook in nougat .. even the icons are stock -_-

  • vigneshprince

dude! wtf? My NC headphones works great with my XZ, sound is awesome, great than my previous Xperias(Xperia Z,Z2, Z3 too) I had.

  • HAWX

Dude, it gets the job done. But they use stock DACs except Z3. If you using some more serious headphones like Audio technicas and listening music which has some more dynamic range like Classical, Sony’s amps or sometimes sound limiting software can’t deliver enough sound, without quality. You can watch Damir Franc on youtube to understand more on that topic. And also check GSM arena results of the headphone jack results, they give the general idea.

  • Bashar Shehab

I told you why. They need teh moneh. It sucks but that’s the thing now..

  • Ming William Lee

However at this point only 2 SD820 devices got their 7.0s…

  • Manuel Maldonado Turcios

My last Sony phone was Z3. Samsung 7 edge is superior to XZ or Z5 premium, not counting the note 7 which was the best smartphone on the market if not for the exploding battery fiasco.

  • razorg

Sadly, I agree. Although I am a Z5C user, I’ve had the chance to experience a GS7 Edge for some time, and it felt like you were getting more for the money you are paying. However, I’m satisfied with my Z5C right now. Another year till my contract ends. I hope Sony can seduce me again this time next year…

  • Yep, and it’s worth waiting for. Got it on my Xperia XZ Dual and it’s a *great* update!

  • Some people just like to complain. Sound is loud and great on my Xperia XZ Dual’s built-in speakers, it has the best call sound quality of any phone I’ve ever used, and you’ll not be able to pry my noise-canceling earbuds (which need no dongles, battery packs or anything else) from my cold, dead hands because they’re an incredible convenience for anyone who travels much.

  • Shamoy Rahman

I agree on that part, or they could include the fingerprint sensor on the screen using Qualcomm’s Ultrasonic fingerprint solution.

  • Shamoy Rahman

XZ got Nougat and that is very very fast for Sony to ever release an update within 2-3 months of release. You should stop complaining, the Z3+ will get the update in a few weeks too, that’s better support than Samsung’s S6, the LG G4, or OnePlus 2.

  • Ailan Hidaz

One of which is an Xperia XZ…I’m assuming you are referring to HTC 10 as the other?

  • Ailan Hidaz

And yet here you are posting on XperiaBlog instead of “SamsungBlog” or whatever blog exists for Samsung devices…

    Dear Sony Mobile,

Please allow us to uninstall preinstalled apps (from Sony and MobiSystems) without needing to root the phone.

Please include a Korean language keyboard (and the Japanese language keyboard for cheaper Xperia phones) straight out of the box. Don’t force us to install third-party keyboards (e.g. Swiftkey).

Please consider including dual sim feature as a standard default spec on all Xperia phones. It is a godsend for frequent travellers.

Please further improve the camera app.

Please do not neglect the humble but trusty FM radio feature. You don’t know how enjoyable it is to listen to local radio stations without consuming your data.

And never go full retard by taking away the 3.5mm audio jack.

  • Actman

Apparently I can remark whatever I like to. You may choose to start a new comment or better yet shut the hell up!

  • Biancoceleste

If you feel the Xperia phones are playing second fiddle to Apple and Samsung, you clearly are buying the wrong product. Sony phones offer everything those boring devices don’t. Who cares about a silly finger print scanner? A fast, well designed, properly waterproofed is way more important. Gimmicks are for teenagers.

  • RockStar2005

Second fiddle? The ONLY way Sony plays second fiddle to those overrated phone maker hacks is how they compete for the phone market here in the U.S. It sickens me that people think Samsung and Apple are SO great and amazing but don’t even know Sony’s Xperia line exists. But that is Sony Mobile’s fault. They should be the king here, but instead they barely have a foothold in the market. They were more dominant 2 years ago when they ACTUALLY HAD deals with carriers like T-Mobile. They just keep slipping, and it sux to watch it happening, but it’s the utter stupidity of the people running the show there that has caused this.

I’m not focused on the fingerprint scanner really. I’m focused on Sony doing whatever it takes (yes, even bringing DOWN the prices of their phones and giving us more, not less) to take over. And I’m sure some ppl will say “well who cares if most ppl don’t know about them?” Well you should, if you live here anyway. The more they pull back, the more likely it will be that not only will they reach a point where they stop selling even unlocked phones here, but we may even get to a point where even the int’l Xperia phones (like my current Xperia X Performance) won’t work here either. Sony needs to take its U.S. customers more seriously and show more respect. I’m a huge Sony fan, but I don’t appreciate being disrespected.

Take HTC for example………….they actually show they give a d*mn about us. T-Mobile requires certification for ppl to utilize VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling on its network (lame, I know, but still…..). You think Sony would pay for that? No…….but they still charge a pretty penny for their phones. But HTC on the other hand doesn’t want people to have a limited experience while using their unlocked phones.

    tmonews.com/2016/04/unlocked-htc-10-is-fully-compatible-with-t-mobile-including-volte-and-wi-fi-calling/

Next year, I may switch to another. Or I may not. But I don’t think Sony Mobile is really doing enough to remain competitive. They can be doing more, but they’re being so ignorant it’s hard to believe they will ever even come around.

  • Jamie stewart

Will the Xperia m5 get it??

  • Petrohead

Personally, I think rear fingerprint sensor is stupid, and I like the fact that the sensor is inside the power button, which is what I use to wake my handset. No buttons on the front of my handset at all, only the power button on the side to wake it. That’s how it’s been for the last 4 years with my Sony handsets. So for me, this method works. Being in Australia, I don’t have to worry about reflashing or anything, since it works out of the box. It’s only the US market that has the sensor disabled via firmware.

  • Nicky Wedemeyer

That’s why I love Sony Xperia smartphones!

  • Ailan Hidaz

Ahh I was unaware X Performance has a 820 – I mean that phone was never released in the Middle East or in certain parts of Asia. I would have preferred it to the Z5

  • Emil Oskarsson

Back of the device? Stupid position in my opinion! Sony choice is the best one I have seen so far, putting it in the powerbutton located where I do have my thumb when I unlock the phone :)

  • Rickson Nata Saguna
  • Bashar Shehab

You better mark whatever you understand. Not some bullshit I’m so tired of explaining every singke time when you can understand the full thing with Google.com

  • NinJy

The thing is, I love my Z and Z5P as hardware, but Android become a bigger joke at each revision. UI stagnate, still same Lollicrap issues not fixed or partially since the release of it.
“Optimization? Who cares ?”. I also own an iPhone SE, and in my opinion, today iOS is far better and well optimized than Android.
And I don’t even talk about the lesser quality put in the developement of popular app.
Many don’t really cares about Android version, and it is easy to see that iOS versions are better crafted.
That’s why every bench compare between Android phones and iPhone are jokes. It is not even comparable from the beginning because the quality is not the same. So few apps are equial quality.

I’m nostalgic of Sony Ericsson OS from 2005~ :(

I would fucking love an Xperia device running a Sony home made OS that piss on laziness and dictatorship of Google. (and the royalties to Microsoft lel)

  • Moisés

    I do not think so…
Not even e5 is on the list

  • Thai de Campos

Well, would it be intelligent to warn Sony buyers about this problem, in a Samsung blog? I’m sorry, your logic is too advanced for me to understand. Maybe you’re just too smart, you, and the people who liked your genius com ment.

  • Moisés

I saw it today.. It is just a concempt
Sony will never give up on front speakers..
They do care about music and videos on the phone..

  • mUSICA

Sony Just pushed A Memory App Update, Whats This?

  • Taquidi

Not Sony neither Samsung released 7.1.1 yet, how can you say who failed? At best, Samsung failed in telling they will be first to update, since Sony announced they would do that before Samsung did.

  • imparanoic

actually, my wife’s Sony Xperia X Performance has better battery life than my z2 ( official replacement battery was done during march 2016) even though z2 has bigger battery, seems marshmallow on older chips 801 isn’t very power efficient, it’s noted that i don’t use my z2 for video or music either , i use my high end sony walkman nw-zx100, i can tell you sounds bette than any phone by million miles

  • RockStar2005

Hmm. Yeah it must be cuz of Marshmallow? I dunno……….tomorrow I’ll be going into downtown (Chicago) via train, and will be down there for hours w/o the ability to charge my phone. So I’ll definitely be testing Stamina Mode out more closely during that time and comparing it to other recent trips into the city. Especially now that Nougat has been installed!

I had the Z3 and it was awesome. The XP overall is awesome but I’m hoping this new Nougat update will make a difference. A friend who also has the XP claims he’s noticed an improvement, but we’ll see tomorrow.

Yeah for music in my car I use my phone directly, but on my headphones I connect my XP to the Oppo HA-2 premium amp/DAC, which makes a noticeable improvement in the sound. I also used to own the NWZ-A17 Walkman and HAVE actually tried out the ZX100. It was pretty nice…….. both Walkmans were great.

These days though, you have phones like the HTC 10 and the LG V20. Both phones (prob more the V20 by a half notch) have PREMIUM DACs in them which have gotten a ton of very positive reviews. I don’t know if they’re as good as the ZX100, but even if not, they’re probably a lot closer than most would expect. My only very MINOR issue with the Walkmans is I wish they could slightly louder. 99% of the time my A17 was fine, but on some Hi-Res music I had that was mastered at a lower volume, I was happy with the volume but wouldn’t have minded another say, 5 notches or so.

  • Volca Lucia

Sony really need to get their sh*t together. The X series was a totally a downgrade from the Z5 series, even the XZ is sad with plastic frame and only metal back. If they can push the updates as priority, now that’s a good start! hopefully 2017 phones will be a much better and “worth” to buy. Even Huawei is doing a better job now. So far there are no worthy Z5 Premium successor just yet.

  • imparanoic

all phone, even with dedicated dacs will NOT sound as good as sony a series ( a1x/a2x even a3x) or older f88x series), and definitely no where as good as nw-zx100, nw-zx1, or astell & kern ak100, or Onkyo DP-X1 , Pioneer XDP-100R, even my 2009 nwz-x1000 sounded better than any phone when i and a mate did a blind test with (3 phones, 5 earphones, 1 akg k551 headphones, nwz-f886 and nwz-x1050 for the same song)

the difference on the sony nw-zx range, OS-CON capacitors, low-resistance ofc cable, such as Atsumakudohaku printed circuit board, full aluminium milled chassis

sounds like soundtsgage is really clear and precisse , no sibiance,

  • RockStar2005

Yeah. I’m just saying they’ve gotten MUCH closer than like 2 years ago when I had my Z3 and the LG phones were considered the WORST sounding. A lot can happen it 2 years! lol

For a big chunk of 2015, I HAPPILY used my A17 Walkman. But after several months, I began to realize I really wanted to play off my phone, so that’s why I sold it and went the amp/DAC device route.

Nice on AKG! I used to have the AKG K550 (as well as the K550 MK II and K553). One of the best sounding headphones PERIOD.

  • imparanoic

i also using xba-30 and mdr-nc750 as well as my akg k551 ( sony’s built digital noise cancellaton) earphones, even my wife loves her mdr-nc750 on her x performance

it’s noted that a2x, a3x and nw-zx100 as well , sony 2015 and 2016 xperia phones use LDAC for high bitrate wireless which is great ( tested at sony centre) for high fidelity without the wireless, try it, it may surprise you how good the quality, better than lg expensive aptx hd ( only lg g6 is compatible)

  • RockStar2005

yeah but LDAC only FULLY works if you’re connecting LDAC-capable headphones or speakers. I USED to have the Sony MDR-1A headphones, but don’t anymore. They were wired headphones so it didn’t matter anyway. I had Sony’s NC earphones but didn’t open the package because at that time I decided I’d rather just spend more and get actual headphones, which now I’m glad I did as I have no need for NC really.

  • imparanoic

it’s only a matter of time before sony follows htc ( bolt), apple (iphone 7), motorola (z) and apparently samsung forthcoming s8 with no 3.5mm headphone jack

  • RockStar2005

Yeah, probably. I’d prefer they didn’t, only cuz in the car I still use 3.5mm jack. But whatever. At home I use MicroUSB so for that it doesn’t matter to me.

  • Actman

Learn your English before you remark anything to here. You know there is no cure for retardation!

  • Actman

Who the hell needs your explanation? You can cut your cheap crap! Or better yet explaining it to your mum. If she can’t understand, give her a lesson that starts with A,B,C. Just as I reiterated earlier on, get the fu*k off or start a new comment. Who do you think you are? Some SONY EXPERT? Go home junior!

  • Actman

Trash! A garbage comment! ‘Have you seen nougat starting to roll for the Galaxy s6 for example?’ – Let me ask you back… Did you ever heard SAMSUNG aimed to be the first manufacturer of 7.1.1? I would have uttering a same criticism against them if they were the one who losing a bigger picture! You know what Email? A hard thing about business is minding your own.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Who the f*ck is Email? haha Still they are among the first manfucaturers to release android 7.0 nougat for some of their devices (XZ and X Performance) :)

  • Actman

So? Does it concern those mid rangers and older flagships users out there? Huh?

  • Uzair Syed

I would rather pay higher just to have the finger print scanner enabled. I don’t like rooting.

  • RockStar2005

I’m HALF with you Uzair lol. I don’t like rooting either, but I think Sony charges enough as it is. Instead of doing MORE to market their phones and get more customers, they think charging higher prices is the way to go. They think they’re Apple and can get away with that stuff, but even Apple isn’t exactly “getting away with it” any longer. lol

  • Bashar Shehab

You are either joking or just too dumb. I can’t really tell…

  • Ailan Hidaz

Understanding of grammar and basic vocabulary will do wonders when trying to put someone down, sherlock.

  • iia3ezu

I really don’t mind 100% plastic if it is a high quality plastic with reinforced edges. The point of plastic is to keep the phone light. An example would be the Xperia C3: 5.5 inch but only about 140 grams. A phone of that size should not exceed 160 grams.

The bezels could be made smaller. The edgeless screen in the Xperia XA and the C5 Ultra was a good thing. But it shouldn’t only be for the cheaper phones.

  • iia3ezu

Bad thing about iOS is you’ll have to go through iTunes for everything. You can’t just plug in the phone to the USB port of your PC and transfer stuff.

There are also many exclusive Android apps not found on iOS. And those apps will never be on iOS due to legal reasons.

The only absolute advantage for Apple is those major game publishers tend to release their games on iOS first, before porting to Android (if at all). So you can play those games first on an iPhone.

But Apple has the best quality control, because they do everything in-house. iPhones also tend to retain a higher resale value.

  • Actman

This is the main reason why you were asked to learn before you commenting idiot! Joke? Do you think I jest with you all the while? When I said ‘LEARN IT’ and I mean it. You understand me SONY EXPERT?

  • Thelmarbishop

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Well power button is good place to have the fingerprint scanner since it falls naturally on your hands but I think back of the device also falls naturally on your hand and can easily unlock the device. Since HP has patent and Sony can’t bring that feature to US market is a real bummer. Plus no one complains about it.

  • Alireza Purbakhtiar

Plz Mention, Which phones will receive it? Same list that you publish for android 7 will have 7.1.1.?

  • Alireza Purbakhtiar

You may prepare the new android 7 faster than anyone for one or two of your phone models, but I think it will take a very long time to prepare it for all the list of your phones who are supposed to receive it.

  • Moisés

Plastic frame is to increase signal. No need for external antenna

  • Moisés

It showed up on my z4 too.. From What’s new app..

  • razorg

E5 is inferior to M5, though it is a “newer” device. M5 ticks all the boxes for Nougat requirements but I doubt Sony will provide further support on it. Such a shame… :(

  • Thai de Campos

Could you please rewite my comment then? Tell me where the mistakes are and I’ll happily correct them, since you’re using this because you couldn’t come up with a real answer. Even though, your grammar’s perfect…
    Thanks in advance :)

  • Adam Varney

Even though the cell and WiFi reception is below average on the XZ…

  • InspectorGadget80

How bout updating the older models first, I wouldn’t be surprised if they cancelled the Z3/5 series’

  • vigneshprince

    sure

  • Gurnlei

Just got Nougat on my Xperia X and everything is working great. Good job on Sony for showing some care for their phones.

  • InspectorGadget80

Sony will never up date the older models they will force everyone to buy the newer models typical. I be surprise if the Z3 series won’t get the update. I won’t buy their phones again until hey update the older models first

  • InspectorGadget80

How bout updating the software that’s the most important thing

  • Daniel Johanzon

see the fan to run out the Android 7.0 update to Z5 family just before, tough fucking sony !!!!

  • spacesnow

Could you send files from other phone through bluetooth to your Nougat updated X? I lost the ability for that after update. Really annoying, now have to wait next update.

  • Gurnlei

Haven’t tried yet, will update tomorrow.

  • AG12

Well it launched today and have to say it’s very nice Camera much faster and liking the app shortcuts https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c150f7a3dd735dc9b6d9aa59f17b79ba6b1b25a433dcce3a37ba45e50edbb1f4.png
