Sony Mobile has unveiled the Xperia XA1 Ultra, which is an update on last year’s Xperia XA Ultra. The big features of the Xperia XA1 Ultra include a 6-inch edge-to-edge 1080p display and a powerful 16MP front camera with OIS and front-facing LED flash. Sony has also adopted the endless loop surface design, first seen in the Xperia XZ last year.

The front camera is powered by a 1/2.6-inch Exmor R sensor with 23mm wide-angle F2.0 lens. On the rear, Sony is using a 1/2.3-inch 23MP Exmor RS camera with hybrid autofocus. It uses a 24mm wide-angle F2.0 lens.

The Xperia XA1 Ultra sports a MediaTek Helio P20 MT6757 chipset, 4GB RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of eMMC internal storage. Other features include a 2700mah battery, a microSD memory card slot, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and a USB Type-C port.

The Xperia XA1 Ultra has dimensions of 165 x 79 x 8.1 mm and weighs 188g. The Xperia XA1 Ultra will launch in Gold, White, Black and Pink colours when it is released in Spring 2017.

  • Would have loved this screen size on XZ Premium!

  • penubag

Those speakers slits look much better than the ones on the XZ Premium as well.

  • exFictitiouZ

this phone is replacing my Xperia Z Ultra ! (which I have been tending to so dearly in waiting for a replacement)

  • Zayed Kotayba

Although the XZ Premuim got all the attention but this a very sexy looking device

firstly, after Sony’s dismal attitude to servicing my X Z Ultra when it needed a new battery, I swore off buying Sony: http://www.pocketables.com/2016/09/will-never-buy-sony-definite-time-really-mean.html

secondly, this has a Mediatek SoC, which spells bad news for community support when Sony lose interest.

otherwise, this seems like a really nice device.

  • Paul M

shame abiout the mediatek SoC ;-(

  • Samar Vaishampayan

mediatek is better than snapdragon, less heating issues.

  • sigh, I’m going back to bed wake me up if this ever reaches Verizon in the US.

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

    no update

  • Though the same. But don’t know if it would be possible due the fingerprint reader… :/
Let´s hope Apple to announce a reader integrated with the screen so others brand could follow

  • Bashar Shehab

    Those are not speaker slits

  • Samar Vaishampayan

No update of what? Android or driver’s?

  • Samar Vaishampayan

Jolla sailfish os is heading sonywards. Maybe that will help after Sony ends support to device.

  • Bill_Compton

why? mediatek is cold as ice and very good processor. its 2017 not 2012. they have become big

  • Warren Chang

almost 4 year old phone, not surprising, maybe sony uk don’t have the battery, consider third party battery from a third party retailer

  • nick sweden

    Hahahaha

  • Paul M

yes, technically some of the mediatek SoCs are excellent.

why do so many hate Mediatek. so many reasons!

    very briefly.

    support – they give none.
source code – despite being legally obliged under the GPL, they rarely do. IME, it’s very low quality code for drivers and stuff.

so you buy a high-end phone and once the manufacturer gets bord and support dries up, there’s not much support from the community because they can’t build the kernel and fix driver problems.

This has a more preferred screen to body, speaker slits vs the premium. However I do like the more cylindrical shape of the xz premium. If sony could’ve just increased the screen size to 5.8 on the same footprint, it would be perfect imo.

why not just to buy it over amazon unlocked for $300 after a month or so , there will be probably even free MicroSD 16gb like it was with original XA ultra …

  • I would if I could but Verizon is a CDMA network. Sony’s phones are almost always GSM network. They have to actually make a CDMA version I cant buy an unlocked GSM version meant for Europe.

My wishlist for a Sony Xperia Phone: A “6.5” screen design looks just
like the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, 16 megapixel motion eye camera ( same
sensor size ), Supports up to 256GB of additional memory, louder
speakers. No offense but 5 inch and 6 inch Phones get a little old after a while IMO. Ok I am done :)
