Sony confirms 2 new Xperia flagship devices for later this year

by XB on 24th May 2017

in Rumours, Xperia XZ series

Sony held an investor conference in Tokyo yesterday, talking through all areas of their business. One of the slides reflecting on its mobile product portfolio appeared to confirm that it will launch at least two new flagship devices later in the year.

Sony has traditionally launched new Xperia products at the IFA tradeshow in Berlin for the last few years, so we would guess the same will apply this year. IFA takes place between 1 to 6 September 2017.

We don’t know much about Sony’s plans for its H2 flagships, but interestingly during the investor meeting a question was asked about the company’s plans to move to a different aspect ratio (18:9) or adopting OLED displays. The response was that while their plans were commercially sensitive, Sony is naturally basing future products on this assumption. As to what timeline, Sony was referring to here, remains unclear.

Don’t worry, my Z5p. You’ll stay with me at least until september… And maybe a little bit more :)

  • XZ1 and XZ1 Compact ;)

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Right decision, The epic fail of SONY Mobile is Xperia X Performance :D

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

did kaz read this blog? people keep asking flagship only in this blog since 2014

  • Arthur Vinicius

I’m hope Sony update Xperia e5 for nougat.

  • fried_egg

The X was rubbish and hardly priced well. Roll on Oct because my Z5 needs a XZ1 replacement IN THE SAME GOLD PLEASE

  • fried_egg

sadly you need to hope for something more likely to happen

  • fried_egg

the entry mid range gets 1 model a year in 3 sizes… the high end “compact” gets 1 release a year and the high end “4K premium” gets 1 release a year while the volume selling high end “normal size” phone get market themed releases… i.e. there doesnt appear to be a global push on the summer release.. this is good because in the UK people will only get the october release… while in asia they get the warm up spring model too . thus both the UK culture of “one phone a year” and the asia culture of “1 phone every 6 months” get what they want… with no confusion in a half released spring update to markets that don’t like them

  • Abrar Zahin Shahriar

Sony should take a break and work on next year’s flagships instead.

  • Emil Oskarsson

It’s a joy to use! Except the batterylife, but with nougat it’s better then it was on my Xperia z so I can easily get 3-5 on screen time :D

  • Emil Oskarsson

Don’t expect any updates for super cheap budget phones :p

  • Sony is doing “like” Samsung

    XZ = S8
    XZ Premium = Note
    XZs = S8+

Soo the number of flagships are the same than the rivals

  • razorg

The timings are wrong though. Also, XZs doesn’t bring a larger screen just like Samsung’s “plus” models do, thus making itself obsolete. I believe a Compact, a regular, and a Premium device (like the Z5 series) would suffice a year. No more. Not every 6 months, but a whole year where the Compact and the regular phone must be released in MWC, just like Samsung, and the larger Premium should take on the Note at IFA.

  • Kim

X is actually a great phone. Good compact size, screen, camera, fingerprint scanner and battery life. Updated to Nougat. No complaints really…

  • Moisés

XZs is kinda X Perf 2017

  • Moisés

Except the weird idea behind XZs. We have …

    XA : 1 year cycle
XA ultra : 1 year cycle
XZ : XZ1 is coming, so 1 year cycle
    Compact : yearly too

About the Premium, it seems that it is now 6 months after the 5.2″.
XZ at IFA16 and XZ Premium at MWC17.
    So XZ1 at IFA17, then XZ1 Premium at MWC18

Cannot say L1 would be the ” E6″

  • razorg

But the point of this particular device’s existence is so vague. I know having more than one model helps overall, but having so much of them just creates confusion and people tend to move away from what they can not comprehend. Sony should release fewer flagship-upper class devices and be better at advertising them.

  • Moisés

    I agree…

If you find XZ for 450 and XZs 650, 200 is too much for new cam and 1gb ram.
It is really like X Perf, not available in many countries.
We do not have X Perf in Brazil.

  • Nono

They should stop spamming the market with flagships and work on making an impact instead.
Make two distinct flagship lines if you need to launch flagships twice a year but don’t release a flagship with incremental updates multiple times a year. Both existing and new customers will shun you for it.

  • adeceku

Why they need to release too many phones? just release 2 or 3 phones, one for each range and focus on software updates.

  • adeceku

I’m still rocking my X Z3+, and doesn’t feel outdated yet.

  • Jaissal S

I was also thinking to upgrade my Z5 later this year. I hope the new processor used doesn’t have over heating issues like the 810 of the Z5.

  • Jaissal S

Considering upgrading from my awesome Z5 later this year. Would be about 2 years I’ve had it this October/November.

  • Moisés

    Should be 3 high ends ( 5.5″, 5.2″ and 4.6″) and 2 mid ( 5″ and 6″ ) .

  • Iki

It’s not an epic fail, it’s just that people thought it was a flagship (which it wasn’t)

  • MoYeung

    Pure rumors…

  • Biancoceleste

    Too many flagships.

  • DIsChaos

So… I’m not sure should I buy the xperia xz premium or wait next flagship?

  • Abrar Zahin Shahriar

Why two more flagships in 2017 then?

  • illstplaya .

I really hope they don’t go to a 18:9 aspect ratio. It’s so stupid. And pictures and videos don’t fill the entire screen so there’s no point.

  • Hein S

    I love my Z5 Pre!

    Great camera

  • Tifosi Fratello

My Z5P is almost a year old and I’m not ready to upgrade yet.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

But in the picture it said it was a flagship =…=

  • Jer

Wait for the premium of the next one, since this is just the premium of the last variant.

I suppose the 18.9 aspect ratio will ultimately become standardised for mobile. Only way to increase display size without the devices seeming to bulky. Good to see Sony at least acknowledging they’ll have to move on. Hopefully they won’t be the last to adopt it as was the case with moving from tft to ips. The wait for ois still goes on though. Hopefully that too ends in September lol

  • roeshak

Very silly comment. My guess is your objection to it has more to do with the fact that the koreans did it first lol

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Every reviewer says it doesn’t over heat. Even with heavy tasked stuff.

  • azzido

No, should be only high ends, 6″ should be also high end. Skip low and mid devices and focus on flagship premium segment only with different screen size like: 4.6, 5.2, 5.5, 6.0. I am missing bigger flagship phone and z ultra is now outdated and too big as well.

If someone wants cheaper one just picks last year device and that’s it. No need to mess with low profit low/mid rangers…

  • Wafi Azmi Hartono

Why? What’s wrong with Xperia X Performance?

  • Iki

Sony never said it was a flagship, they said it was an x line.
Sony uses z in every flagship.
    (TV, computer, headphone, etc)

  • En.Pasta.Tack

I just saw the new trailer for the upcoming Spiderman. This is a SONY and Marvel studios movie.
In one of the scenes Spiderman is holding a Smart phone that is 9:18 aspect ratio phone, but it neither the Samsung Galaxy S8 nor is it the LG G6. Could this be an upcoming flagship device from Sony?
Since Sony only uses their own branded electronics in their movies, I don’t think this a Samsung nor a LG and judging by the single side button the left side, this is not a known phone model. It is something completely new. See for yourselfs in the attached screenshot.

  • En.Pasta.Tack

Here is the link to the Spiderman trailer:

  • Jaissal S

In the beginning the handset would hear up quite a bit when gaming. This have improved greatly now. At the moment when recording 1080p video it can warm up alot. Otherwise it’s a fantastic phone.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Well, When I compare it spec with it price I don’t think it’s worthy to buy.

Both camera and audio quality is just meh.

  • Itsarapong Intoum

Take a look at the left handside… FY2016 Flagship was including X Performance =0=

  • Mauricio Herrera

Sony (Japan) did 4K (2160×3840) first and second
The new format is silly and unnecessary

i believe the Premium line doesn’t get refresh as fast as the Full HD flagship just like the Compact class.

  • HAWX

If the panel is working without backlight like Ammoled, then It’s not stupid IMO.

  • Iki

It was the flagship of the x series, but it wasn’t a flagship phone.
They purposely made it cheaper (hence the x name) so that more people would afford it.
    Like samsungs a line.

  • Anibal Evora

my advise I give to people when it comes to buying Sony phones is, buy whichever device that speaks to you first.. The guys at Sony are the only ones that refresh their phones in very quick manner (well, at least their 5.2″ flagships), so buy whatever phone you like from them, and when you feel like they’ve changed things up to make an upgrade worthwhile, then you upgrade..
Technology these days moves so fast that you cannot keep up spending so much on things that are in constant mutation.. So buy whichever phone you want to buy, treat it well so it keeps on going strong, and when you feel like the device you have has given all it’s got, buy a new one ;)

  • Stephen

I miss the fingerprint scanner and the amazing low light photos but since I went from a X to a Z3 my battery life has improved 200%. Saying “oh but you can charge it up quickly” is a moot point – you don’t spend all day next to a wall socket, do you…?

  • Mukesh Ingle

This is good post sony mobile phones is best camera phones

  • Pascal Anargya Silverius Sulis

Let’s make it clear once again :
    Flagship lineup :
XZ Premium = Successor of Z(5) Series Premium moniker , 1,5 years cycle (based on the interval time of Z5P to XZP )
XZ = Successor of Z Series , from 6 months cycle to 1 year cycle (based on the interval time of Z5 to XZ)
XZs = Successor of X Performance , 1 year cycle (X Performance and XZs is X Series high-end , but not a flagship)*
XZ1 Compact Series = Successor of Z Compact Series , 1 year cycle (based on the interval time of Z5C to XC** )
    Premium Standard :
    X = Successor of Xperia M5 , 6-12 months cycle
    X Compact = Compact version of X
    Mid-range lineup :
    XA1/XA Ultra = Successor of C Series (especially C5 Ultra) , 1 year cycle
    XA1/XA = Successor of M Series (except M5) , 1 year cycle
L1 = Successor of E Series (especially E5) , despite the screen is bigger , 1 year cycle

    * Because XZ and upcoming XZ1 is Xperia real flagship
** X Compact is Premium Standard , just the cycle was the same as Z Compact series .

  • Shamoy Rahman

Hoping Sony continues the Z series with the Z6 and renames their midrange lineup to X and entry lineup to E. Xperia Z6, Xperia X6, Xperia E6. A naming scheme like this makes the most sense. Z series gets latest Snapdragon 8XX, X series gets latest Snapdragon 6XX, E series gets latest Snapdragon 4XX or lower end Snapdragon 6XX. Z series should be $600 at launch, Z Premium series $700 at launch, Z Compact series $500 at launch, X series $400 at launch, E series $300 at launch. Sony eventually figures out how to save costs on manufacturing and make the production process more efficient so they should cut the price by $50 every 2 months. Within 4 months that would make it $100 less than the launch price for each phone and it would make Xperias more worth buying and sales would go up.

  • Shamoy Rahman

Snapdragon 835 doesn’t overheat. Sony added like triple copper heatpipes in the XZ Premium and spaced out most of the heat generating components (ISP, CPU, VRMs) to make it run cooler than the S8.

  • Shamoy Rahman

He most definitely does. That’s how he’s helping Sony Mobile respond to demand and figure out what customers really want. Of course, due to financial constraints, I’m guessing that’s why Sony has been slow to adapt and fix a lot of major issues like overheating and not keeping up with competitors like Samsung in the past in terms of speed. Now Sony has finally completely fixed overheating and they’ve brought performance to the top, its runs faster and cooler than the S8/+. The only things left are to make the speakers louder and clearer, to make the design more curvaceous and interesting, OLED screen that hits 1000 nits, and fix the camera software. That’s all Sony needs to get back on top and I’m sure Hirai will be the lead of this change.

  • Shamoy Rahman

X Performance was ass, absolute disgrace for Sony mobile. Z3+ was the 2nd worst and Z5 was in a similar ballpark. The XZ is what should’ve came out in early 2015.

  • Shamoy Rahman

Wait for XZ1 Premium or XZ2 premium, there will be even bigger and better changes that you will certainly love.

  • DIsChaos

I actually had to pre order this , my Xperia Z2 does’nt really want to keep going on his 4 year ,I guess next time time I buy it will be Xperia XZ 5 (I only change every 3 year so)
