Sony says Movie Creator bug fix helps Xperia Z5 performance issues

We recently reported about the performance issues that Xperia Z5 users had when upgrading to Android 7.1.1 Nougat. A number of users have suffered lag, battery woes and crashes, however some have reported that disabling the Movie Creator application helped improve performance.

Now Sony has weighed in on the matter, saying that an update for the Movie Creator app (version 4.7.B.1.3) helps provide a fix. Sony is recommending users to update the app and restart your handset. This particular update landed on 21 July 2017, so if you’ve already updated the app without any fix, you’ll probably need to wait on Sony for a proper fix.

Sony statement on Xperia Z5 performance issues

“Sony Mobile is committed to providing the highest standard of product quality and customer service for all of our products. A software update (version 4.7.B.1.3) has been released for the Movie Creator application, available in Google Play, which fixes a performance issue affecting some Xperia customers.

“Customers are recommended to update the application and restart their device. As always, customers who have any concerns regarding the performance of their Xperia device may contact their local customer service.”

  • I’m impressed that Sony only took a day to answer the question. Really an improvement.
Let’s hope that they can release another update to Z5 line to fix the problems for good!

  • JC

7.1.1 was released a while ago, though.

  • sawan patidar

Hoping for the battery fix this time and of course you tube lag would fix by this then it would be awesome. Thanks Sony.

  • Gregory See

What a good update. Is this what Sony called a ‘solution’? How about the sluggish call history, substandard of RAM management and taking ages for photos to sharpen up?

  • Emil Oskarsson

Maybe that’s why I haven’t had any issues with Android 7.1.1 on my z4 tablet, I always inactivate that app on my handsets since I don’t use the app :p

  • hansip

    Nicely done Sony.

  • deekbee

An even better option is to just disable the app completely, or allow people to remove it.

Never used it. Never have any intention of using it.

  • deekbee

Workaround, not solution. A solution is disabling the app.

Agreed – photo sharpening speed is pathetic, call history isn’t too bad on mine, RAM management is diabolical, camera startup time is poor, camera shot-to-preview time is ridiculous.

And of course overheating is still an issue ….

  • deekbee

Not likely, I think that 7.1.1 is virtually end of the line for the Z5.

And you’re quite easily impressed …. (and no, they won’t ever fix the problems for good)

  • fried_egg

Sony ignored weeks of complaints on their own support forum about the issue… It was only when various websites started doing big stories on it Sony reacted.

  • fried_egg

Not impressed with Sony’s handling of this. They had hundreds of posts on their own support forum about the issue and the movie creator disable “fix” – it was only after very negative reports appeared on various mobile phone news websites that Sony seemed to do anything. Perhaps the headlines were too close to the build up for the IFA announcements and the handset that will be going head to head with Apples iphone 8 & they felt they had to be seen to be doing something… especially as Z5 turns 2 years old in 2 months time and a lot of expiring “2 year contracts” will be looking for their next phone.

  • iia3ezu

Such a shame Sony crapware still takes up storage space after being disabled. You can’t remove them unless you root the phone.

People with TrackID preinstalled on their Xperia phones must feel really annoyed after next month.

  • iia3ezu

8.0 is about to be released, and even for the upcoming new phones that don’t have it, they have 7.1.2 AND a quick upgrade to 8.0 when it arrives.

  • JC

7.1.2 was only released to fix some bugs found on a couple non-Sony models.

  • Eugénio Costa

I am pleased to have the latest 7.1.1 android version! I’ve been using the Google launcher to take advantage of the shortcuts capability. The system is fluid, yet the phone runs hot under normal usage with direct impact on baterry drain. No sudden crashes are noticed. There are a noticeable delay when rendering pictures on the album app, as well as a delay on the contacts app while scrolling through. Stamina mode is unreliable as it makes the animations sluggish and affects the overall experience. I would like to see a revamped camera app, as the current one is well below the competion. A true, advanced manual mode is paramount

Might not be related to this, but I’m seeing a lot of issue with bluetooth after the update, this is on a Xperia XZ.

  • Yeah. Let’s throw around conspiracy theories instead of thanking Sony for fixing app problems!

  • fried_egg

Or we can all be a gullible muppet. For weeks thier forums were full of complaints and self help posts… Sony said nothing on them. Then 2 days after the websites make it front page news… If you want to be the “They break our legs, And we say “Thank you” when they offer us crutches” type then good for you.. as for me… the rescue of 7.1.1 & the movie fix someone found weeks ago on the Sony support forums returned my faith after the dreadful disaster 7.0.x was (& it is obvious why that was so delayed at coming out to begin with)…. that i am likely to replace my launch Z5 which replaced a launch day Z1 that replaced a launch day S that replaced a launch day X10 with the “xperia xz1 g8341” when it is announced in a few weeks… my 2 year contract early window upgrade is already open but the premium is too big and glossy while the S8 isn’t perfect for my wants. But, hey, lets all think it was just co-incidence that the Sony Forums were ignored by reps for weeks but then boom…

  • Lex Luna

i dont have any problem with 7.1.1 perfect firmware!!

  • You are right! But again, i own an Z5 and don´t have any of this issues

  • Alex Schwarz

Anyone could help me?? I’m trying to flash my Z5 Dual E6683 and update to latest firmware but Flashtool doesn’t seem to work, whenever I download firmware from XperiFirm it doesn’t create the bundle, instead it says “ERROR – Null” https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/e8e74876f5eb645fe06d1313316f72f79f59d8074e6f1ccd435f3e8789095a54.png

  • Biancoceleste

They definitely should allow people to remove whatever app they want.

  • Senxiria

    Use xperia companion then ..

  • Max Li

Actually Sony should consider just removing it, I usually disable it.
What this app does is simple, whatever photos you accumulate a period.
It will monitor than after a period it will compile into a video.
Does anyone need such app? Doubt so.

  • Unfortunately it’s app to Google to allow that. Manufacturers probably thinks it’s easier to add app as system’s, not user’s and that makes them to see (and maybe use) them…

  • I believe that it’s not the only reason. Apps doesn’t grow on trees – someone has to find the problem and fix it and it takes some time..

Still it should be fixed with 30 June update or 18 July one, not one which came 21 July, coz what was the point of the one 3 days before?

  • I thought that it was update made for Pixel and Nexus lines only.

  • But still they did something. Not sure if Samsung, HTC or LG would lift a finger… or any Chinese manufacturer different than Xiaomi (coz they have weeklies).

Sony may not be perfect, but when You look at Android community as a whole, they are closer than any other. And even if it’s not something amazing, it is something I look at when choosing new device.

  • Redownload/recreate ftf or change Flashtool version if it’s not newest one.

  • JC

Yeah, those are the ones that got it but only to fix some issues they had with Nougat.

  • Good to know that. Till now I thought it was to make Google’s devices look “better” than other manufacturers’ :P

  • Alex Schwarz

Alright, thanks. But now, should I exclude all .ta files?

    http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/08/16/create-your-own-ftf-firmware-files-using-xperifirm-and-flashtool-guide/

Acording to that, yes, but, such firmware has more .ta files, so I should exclude all or just those that are mentioned (cust-reset.ta & fota-reset.ta)?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Biancoceleste

    No doubt.

I can honestly say I’ve never used the movie creator app.

  • If You ask me I say all. That’s how I was “taught” by guide I read few years back, and that’s how I create ftfs. Till now no complains.

  • Alex Schwarz

Thank you very much ch3, I finally did it!! tyvm, I’m finally on MM :)

  • Cecco1970Effeffe

Received notification of OTA update of this firmware ONLY TODAY, 7 AUGUST 2017
    Z5c, custom region 1298 5498 R3D (ITA)
But is it better to upgrade or better leave it to FW 32.3.A.2.33 ???????

  • JC

    Bye, bot.

  • JC

I’ve used it to share my family pictures with them.

  • Mateus B. Cassiano

At least on M5 and Z3+, a lot of the bloatwares (including even some of the Sony apps) were actually installed as user apps and could be completely removed without root (they would only reappear if you did a factory reset).

Recently I got an Xperia X and not only all of the bloatware apps are system apps, some can’t even be disabled normally without tinkering with root (and honestly, if you have root you should just uninstall them instead of disabling) and even worse, some third party apps like Facebook, Amazon and Spotify now come installed as system apps…

It really worked now there is a better battery backup. Thanks Sony.

  • babylonbwoy

My bluetooth is killing my battery since the last update, sometimes it’s 60/70% of battery drain.
    Is it only me ?
    Z5 Dual.
Sony has a paid (!!!) theme named Secret Agent with animated wallpaper with a compass that use GPS, it kills battery too.
    What happend Sony ?!

  • Cinar

Same issue for bluetooth.. Sometimes phone turn into flight mode itself and Bluetooth is open for no reason. (android 7.0)
