Android 8.0 Oreo gets official

Google has confirmed that Android 8.0 will officially be known as Android Oreo. This is Android’s second branded release, after Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Android Oreo includes a number of improvements including picture-in-picture, Autofill, and improvements to the notification system including notification dots, categories and snoozing.

Google has worked hard on optimising battery life, start-up time, graphics rendering, and stability. There are also 60 new emoji added in Android Oreo if that gets you excited. Another key addition is Project Treble, which makes it easier for manufacturers to push quicker Android updates.

Overall, Android Oreo is shaping up to be an exciting release. Sony has yet to confirm which existing devices will run Android Oreo, but it is a given that Sony’s new devices to launch at IFA 2017 will launch with Oreo out of the box. As soon as we have details on which of Sony’s current crop of Xperia smartphones will get Oreo we’ll let you know.

So ready Xperia xa ultra is on the list

  • Jenge Engelbrecht

I am happy about the special mention of Sony in Project Treble. I know among Sony people it is common knowledge of Sony’s ASOP input and investment. But it is has never been recognised as it should have been. https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2017/05/here-comes-treble-modular-base-for.html?m=1 except for Pixel, Flagship devices has certainly been months ahead on security updates against any competitor

  • LazAndKor

I wonder what Sony will feature on top of the Android Oreo update. Perhaps better manual control,DTTW/S, a new camera ui.

  • dragonsneeze

    Oreo tastes bad.

  • adeceku

I just hope Xperia S upgrade to this version

  • Wolf0491

IF they don’t give my X10 Oreo I am done with Sony.

  • Mario Blanco Vílchez

Fingers crossed for the Z5 family getting the update (but let’s be honest: that’s a fat chance…).

  • JC

They completely redesigned the emojis. Bye bye blobs.

  • Mate, I feel like we should be happy we got 7.1. I mean, most other Android manufacturers don’t support their phones for that long…

  • Mario Blanco Vílchez

I’m happy, I just like dreaming for a bit haha

  • I’m riding high that my Z5 Compact has 7.1.1 when so many flagships from last year (and a few from this year) are still on 7.0. Even for a short time we had 7.1 while Google figured out the issues with it on the Nexus 6.

  • NinJy

It’s killing me that XZP will still higher end than XZ1 but will get the update later… but well.

  • Eugénio Costa

Nexus 6P (SD810) is due to get Android O, so it’s really a matter of Sony’s willingness

  • Warren Chang

actually, quite high, don’t forget sony will update phones for 2 years, z5 was released in late 2015, therefore, high chance of last ever update 8.0 oreo (ie, z2, had 4.4. 5.0, 5.1 & 6.0)

  • Warren Chang

just wondering, new feature of oreo, picture in picture, which seems similar to small apps, or is this different?

  • Warren Chang

if the rumour is correct, some phones will get ldac with oreo, some phones won’t ( need to pay sony licence )

  • hansip

depends on Qualcomm willingness to update their S810 driver for Oreo. not Sony.

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Very true, Sony even helped Google with android 7.

  • Kwang Zhee Choo

Can it even run Oreo in the first place? I don’t think the Xperia X10 can do anything more than ICS. Be reasonable…

  • Squirtle 1

I guess the whole x family get android O. But I’m not sure.

  • Abrar Zahin Shahriar

I think phone manufacturers don’t but headphone/sound system manufacturers have to.

  • Khillo81

Correction: Android Kitkat was 4.4.x and not only 4.4.4

  • Khillo81

    Get the sarcasm, dude!

  • Nebojša

For Z2 it was 3 major update (Android 4, 5 and 6). The same thing will happen with Z5 (Android 5, 6 and the last one 7), don’t expect 8.0 for Z5 family, it’s imposible.

  • fried_egg

My Z5 will be 2 years old in less than 60 days… it will not be getting 8.0 However 7.1.1 & google assistant (which loaded this week) were surprises that have kept me loyal…. So in a week or so’s time I expect I will be (as I did for the Z1 & Z5) pre-ordering the XZ1 via EE a couple of hours after it is announced at “IFA” – The Z5 is EOL.

  • fried_egg

Although there have been claims of a 8.0 powered test phone seen in benchmark tests there have also been claims of the same phone running 7.1.1 in similar tests… Sony hasn’t ever launched a brand new flagship with “just launched” Android and I really doubt we will see the XZ1 launch with it… I expect it to be 7.1.1 with a month 2 update to 8.0 – and the reason is simple… to have 1st day stock and if the launch is in September those babies will already be being set up on the production line this month.

  • deekbee

Z5 is ending at 7 …. I’d be happy with the current release and an improved camera application (ie. one that has a decent interface and works as fast as it was originally promised to, which it never has)

  • iia3ezu

I still have KitKat 4.4.2 on an old Xperia phone. Didn’t bother to update to Lollipop.

  • iia3ezu

Hopefully, Sony doesn’t do this. Pouring new wine into old wineskins is a bad idea.

Even for pure stock Android e.g. A Nexus/Pixel, Google isn’t obliged to support device for more than 2 years.

Buy a new phone every 1.5 to 2 years. Trade-in your old one. By that time the battery would have become crappy anyway. Phones these days are disposable items, like condoms or tampons. Planned obsolescence is in the hardware and the software.

  • iia3ezu

Predicting which already released phone will receive the Android Oreo update.

The Nokia 8, because it’s (near?) pure stock Android, so it’s simple to update. Or some Motorola phone, because it’s the OEM of Google.

  • Dante the great

Xperia X10 will be updated to Hydrox.

  • razorg

Although I’d love a newer Android version on my Z5 Compact, I’m more than happy with 7.1.1 right now (considering S7/S8/A 2017 series etc are all still at 7.0 and 7.1.1 is still kept as an “exclusivity” for the upcoming Note 8, where it should come out with Android 8 really). What I want from Sony at this point though, are; 1- regular security patchings (once every 2 months max) for another year (Android phones on avg have a support life of 3 years; 2 years with usual Android version updates, and an extra year with only security patchings) and 2 – newer versions of Xperia Home launcher during this last year, if it wouldn’t be a kind of hardship for Sony.

  • Android 8

  • Chaturanaga Manchanayake

Oh wasn’t it android 7 as well? I remember reading an article about Sony fixed some bugs. Well I guess it’s 8. My bad.

  • WHERE’S OREO FOR MY P990i??????!!?!?!?!!!????

    /obligatory

  • Geralt

Loving Lineage on SP, surely will get an Update to LOS15

  • Talos the Robot

    Hahaha good one!

  • DIVYANSHU SHARMA

    finger crossed for xperia xa

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

if it disposable, better choose Chinese brand. it cheaper and disposable too. no need buy xperia.

people here buy sony because they know xperia can last longer than other brand except apple. there’s many xperia user out there still using 2013 xperia because it still usable and better battery life than Chinese phones.

  • Rohan

doze mode is stripped stamina mode. The rro theming layer which all oem theming options use now. Sony has contributed quite a lot to android.

  • Eranga Weerasinghe

I wonder if this update might fix the camera overheating. Can’t take more than 5 snaps without the phone overheating and force closing the app on my Xperia X. Only frustration with the phone. I’m even using Greenify and hibernation manager to close background apps.

  • Alex

Is the X line (specifically the X Compact) likely to get this update??

  • Antonio Escobedo Tzintzun

    :o

  • Keshav Burtony

It’s a budget phone and i personally don’t think Sony will release Android O for it.Sony usually don’t support budget devices well..

  • Keshav Burtony

I think they planned to skip Android O and to update it directly to Android P :D

  • Keshav Burtony

Do you guys think that Sony will leave behind the Xperia Z3+ & Xperia Z5? Leave your thoughts here. :)

  • razorg

    Yes they will.

  • Zayed Kotayba

I’m hoping that the Z5 Series will get the update although I’m satisfied with SONY support for the Z family but I don’t want to change my Z5P because the XZP is not a big improvement (specially in the design department) and I’m still waiting for their next bezel-less phone!!
** Hope that they will announce it in IFA this year

  • yeah, but Z5 came with Lollipop out of the box, it did not get Lollipop with update.

so i believe there is still chance to get Oreo update, and its up to Sony about that.

  • Keshav Burtony

No they won’t do it anytime soon. They are still not over with the Loop design and with the thick top and bottom bezels.Such a shame..It’s been such a long time since Sony really impressed with a new killer phone.

  • Zayed Kotayba

Yes, it’s a shame but they could use the loop glass design with thinner bezel or maybe even edge to edge screen with minimal top and bottom bezels.
I don’t mind the top and bottom bezels but the side bezels are annoying specially the XZP which looks thicker compared to the Z5P (that’s doesn’t mean that the XZP is an ugly phone because it’s not!)

  • bububu

Please release it for the Z5 Compact and other Z5 series phones :)

  • bububu

Buy a new phone :( Xperia S came out in 2012 so it wont get updates past Jelly bean.. Unless u root ur phone and get it that way.

  • G-UK

Have you got a reliable link to this list please?

  • Farhan Ansari

When nexus 5x (released Sept 2015) can get 8.0 then Z5 series must get this major update n Even nexus has SD808 then Sony must consider last flagship of Z series hope Sony understand it

    Yes

  • Moisés

    It’s 8.0 or 7.1.2..

  • Moisés

All will have. But they have to pay to use

  • Olaf Duits

Here we go again; all user with ancient Sony devices will start moaning that they don’t get Oreo…. Please, just buy an up to date device! ;)

  • why? if you have perfectly capable hardware for some updates, there is no need to buy another one.

my Z5 is still working really well, any new upgrade will not make such difference to justify new phone.

we are talking about near stock experience, this is not something overskined like samsung´s touchwiz or experience android.

  • Olaf Duits

That is not what I mean. I mean the whiners that only want the upgrade because of the upgrade. People that have a device that is 3 years old for example, and start complaining about Sony that their device is not getting Oreo. Or already say why it takes so long , why they do not have Oreo already. This shit happens every time there is a topic on a new version. Even when it is a minor versio !

  • G-UNIT_(Z)

Z5 family will not be upgrade to 8.0. I think, but u can install anytime LineageOS. https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/orig-development/cm-14-1-lineageos-t3536846 lineageos is better then stock android rom. I’m fan SONY stock apps and more, but SONY in last time use only google stock things, and i think lineageos will be better rom. i loved my xperia z with 14.1/7.1.2 lineageos rom. Z5 is good phone, deserves upgrades, but, competition is being monitored. (xperia z; 4.1.2, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4.2, 4.4.4, 5.0.2, 5.1.1)

  • Keshav Burtony

Not everyone have the budget to afford a phone at any time.Maybe they have other projects too and a phone is a priority for them..

  • Sampahio Damaceno

    Same here with my W580

  • Olaf Duits

Totally agree, but than be realistic and don’t expect Oreo on e.g. a X10 and blaming a manufacturer.

  • I dont mind waiting, but if my phone is capable for new update, then i have reason to complain, if you ask me, every flagship phone should have at least 3 years support for updates.

Z5 Series are capable of that, even Z4 has almost identical hardware.

Good support means loyal customers, next year in February i will replace my Z5 with other phone, and Sony is on top of my list, mostly because they are really good with support after X series came out, and the thing that their phones are getting better and better with every new update.

  • sid3091

Sorry but no. If Sony planned to make their phones obsolete quickly, why are they advertising battery tech that makes their phones last longer?
