Rumoured pricing of upcoming Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact leaks

by XB on 23rd August 2017

in Rumours, Xperia XZ series

Sony is expected to announce new smartphones, including the Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact, at the IFA tradeshow in Berlin later this month. These will be Sony’s latest flagship devices and therefore are expected to have a price to match.

If you were wondering what kind of price you will have to pay at retail, then according to Roland Quandt (‏who writes for, the Xperia XZ1 will cost GBP 599 at launch, with the Xperia XZ1 Compact priced at GBP 499.

His tweet below also includes a purported press render of the Xperia XZ1, which is in line with the leaks seen previously. He also has listed a couple of Amazon links (not yet live) of the Black and Pink version of the Xperia XZ1.

The more premium pricing of the Xperia XZ1 Compact highlights that it does look like we will get a proper compact Xperia flagship versus last year’s Xperia X Compact. What do you think of the pricing overall? Too expensive, or what you expected? Obviously, we need the full reveal to truly put the pricing into context.

Sony will announce three new Xperia phones at an IFA press conference at 13.00 (CEST) on 31 August 2017. A live stream of the event will be available on the official Sony Mobile Blog.

Thanks Diogo, mrninko and Subham!

  • Please let the XZ1 compact be good. please!

  • Cecco1970Effeffe

As a price list, it’s good.

  • DBS

Well…it depends on what it offers.
I bought the Z3 Compact on launch at Clove for £352. Back then the difference between the Z3 Compact and the Z3 was that it had 1GB of RAM less and a 720p screen instead of 1080p.

IF the XZ1 Compact does NOT bring such discrepancy, ie. it brings the same 1080p screen and same RAM, it *might* justify the £500. However, it’s not cheap (we do have to consider there’s a “Brexit tax” being imposed by companies on the UK for “daring” to leave the EU too, though)

So it will come down to what the phone actually brings to the table. If it’s just a normal sized version of the XZ Premium without the 4K screen, it’s not worth £500. But if it brings new things like, say, an AMOLED display or wireless charging or even just f*cking OIS on the camera…THEN it justifies its pricing.

  • Vlado

Does will be introduced new phones by SONY with Android 8.0 Oreo in IFA Berlin? ;-)

  • The price is cheaper compared to the competition. Unfortunately, since the design is the same found ages ago, really don’t know if the price will be determinet on sales

  • Alex Norris

Not at all interesting devices, especially when compared with the LG V30 …

And how it will differ from XZs with the same camera)) Only 835 processor … In Sony, only this changes. Their stupid strategy has not works

  • Rohit Patil

Considering the history n the trend it’s really a good pricing …!!

  • kabiluddin

Yeah, After the crazy pricing of Note 8 the price of XZ1 and XZ1c appear very reasonable.

  • Max Danger

Don’t know if you’ve opened the amazon links but there are loads of photos and a few specs:

    19 MP Main Camera
    13 MP Front Facing Camera
    5.2″ FHD-HDR TRILUMINOS Display
    Fingerprint Sensor
    High Resolution Audio

    Looking great!

  • Julius Koroll

I am not sure if you can see how huge the bezel is. Who is this XZ1 phone for? Against iPhone? Against S8? The design is getting worse and worse and they just update the hardware from the Premium into this one. I hope the Compact will be a winner for sony.

  • James Gaston (Raitwo)

yes, but they took it off now… There was also something like “scanner resolution: 4K” and I have no idea of what that means…

  • James Gaston (Raitwo)

I personally dislike the new “bezel-less” trend. You can barely hold the phone without touching something

  • KatieMUT

I agree with you. If Sony is the only manufacturer to keep bezels, I’ll be going back to a Sony phone.

  • Mokhtar Mouhib

its the future u have to deal with it + xz1 has a damn big bezels, i dont mind bezels either, but they are soo big, for what purpose? still the same low speakers just like z2, same 2900mah..its ridiculous

  • razorg

Exactly! Fanboys usually jump onto us when we express our dislike on Sony’s current bezels. But we do not want bezels like S8/Note8, we just state that currently Sony bezels are unnecessarily large, they can be and should be slimmer. Not as slim as Samsung’s, but definitely slimmer than they are now.

  • James Gaston (Raitwo)

That’s right, bezels could be a little smaller, battery larger and better speakers… I don’t even care about having a thicker phone, but please, no bezel-less like s8

  • James Gaston (Raitwo)

  • BGDoesGaming

dated design and going to turn people away from this phone…. iphone 8, note 8 and lg v30 is around the corner…. sony really fucked up this time.

  • Marinko Agic

I love Sony, but Sony destroing himself, with no good marketing, with boring designe and this is very powerfull company, and they sleeping. They dont look what Samsung do,and Samsung look what others do,and implemetaising all rumors in own product.Sony have plan for 2 year in future, for future products, and hold this! But someday they must skip plan,to be better.

  • Marinko Agic

    But nothing new

  • R7

I’m not too worried about the prices. Sony phones are always horribly overpriced at launch. Give it 6 months and you get the same phone for 75% or even 50% of it’s launch price wich is much more reasonable.

  • Max Danger

I saved all the pictures and sent them to the admin. Hopefully he will post them soon ;)

  • Moisés

    It is cheaper than XZP..
Other phones may be 1000 dollars in USA

  • Moisés

    Battery is 3000

  • Moisés

    XZ1 x XZs

    S835 x S820
    UFS 2.1 x emmc 5.1
    HDR x SDR screen
    64GB x 32/64GB
    Bluetooth 5.0 x 4.2
    Metal body x metal/plastic
    3000 mAh x 2900

Plus 1 GIgabit Lte, 3D creator, maybe android 8.0 out of box, faster quick charge , maybe more camera controls.

  • Moisés

    Loop design has 11 months.
To me X and XZ do not look alike..

  • Jacky

From a developer’s perspective, there isn’t a standard screen ratio for bezel less phones yet. S8 has 18:9 and I believe the g6 has 18.5:9. If Google’s pixel isn’t heading to that trend this year, I think it’s safe to have a standard 16:9 for now. But hey, at least we are getting hdr and stereo speakers while other phones don’t. :)

  • James Gaston (Raitwo)

    Post them here anyways

  • Me

But not for the Xperia XZ1 Compact.

  • Batuhan Süersan

I have Z3 and i wish they’ve started Z naming with X series. So we can have XZ2 now and XZ3 with new parts next year. And i can get one, can jump from Z3 to XZ3 :)

Also i have 3 half round yellow line on right edge of my screen.

  • hansip

wow if it does come with HDR screen then game on!

  • Smarty79

Anybody cries for a high-end compact but only a very few will pay the price for it. I would have been totally OK with an “X1 Compact” with SD660 and fast storage for $100 less. IP68 of the Z5c was worth exactly nothing. Hope that at least the camera will perform better than in XZs.

  • raju

Please lanch z1 compact in India. So many people waiting

  • Max Danger

They’ve been posted as a new entry

  • Tau45

I’m going to jump from Z1C to XZ1C :) Of course after a year, so I can get it for 40% price just like Z1C.

  • Batuhan Süersan

Nice idea :D But for me waiting for price cut 1 year means 2 years more :o And that yellow points :( Maybe i can buy XZ bec i also have Xperia Z :D So Xperia Z to Z3 and XZ and after that XZ3 :o Also have Xperia Arc but no X Arc out :( Also there are some rumors about new design on next years flagships. So can wait for price cut on XZ and new designs.

  • Tau45

I’m satisfied with used phones with warranty, however my Z1C was someone’s warranty replacement so it was new :p
I had W910i and then WT19i and it was last Walkman phone ;( I still wait for another.

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

actually they replace internal storage tech from eMMC to UFS

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

i still hope sony started to adopt toshiba UFS with 256GB storage

  • raju

    Xz1 and compact camera aperture 1.4 ?

  • raju

Hi Xperia team please launch Xperia Z1 compact in India. After z3 compact no more compacts launch yet India so please launch xz1 compact in india. So many people waiting for compact. compact phone next generation trend with High end features. hope xz1 compact will be launch in India. Thank you

  • raju

    My z1 compact dead

  • raju

  • roeshak

Forget the big bezel design. Wasn’t expecting that to change this year. It’s not yet an industry standard but Sony still coming with no OIS end of 2017 is just lamentable. How long can they just continue to ignore the industry standard. What benefit is there to that?

  • KarFar

    Post them, XB aren’t bothering.

  • KarFar

    You should’ve screenshot the specs

  • Max Danger
  • Melfes Wired

XZ1 Compact is a little bit higher than the previous compact flagship, such as Z5 Compact, but considering the hardware and all the possible bundles we might have, i would say that it is not unacceptable.

However, when compared with the competitors, the software still needs to be further polished, and I mean seriously the algorithm of the camera. If Sony Mobile is really not capable of adjusting the camera well, at least a google hdr+ support should be implemented.

  • deekbee

Only point there where you’re probably incorrect is the camera controls – Sony don’t appear to be interested in moving away from their currently craptacular camera application and lack of control. Which is a shame, as the sensors would be capable of a lot more with a decent camera application.

  • azzido

    forget it, crappy old 2.0…

  • viharm

The Compact is a relatively small screen device, so it is reasonable to assume that multimedia consumption will not the primary purpose for the prospective user.

However the user will expect best performance for all other tasks, including the occasional multimedia consumption.

Hence the pricing must always be significantly lower than flagships. In my opinion GBP499 for the Compact is very high, especially for the plastic body. I bought the Z3 Compact two months after launch for GBP330, when the corresponding Z3 for about 499. I hate large devices and I am desperate to upgrade to the XZ1 Compact, but cannot justify paying GBP499. Moto G here I come :-)

The customer’s use cases must be taken into consideration.
