Sony announces Xperia Hello! “communication robot”

Sony Japan has announced its own digital assistant, or “communication robot”, called the Xperia Hello! This is Sony’s take in the ever growing home assistant market including products such as Amazon Echo, Google Home or Apple HomePod.

The Xperia Hello! (model number G1209) utilises a swivelling camera as the robot’s head, as well as a 4.6-inch 720p display as its body that is used to express emotions and display messages, weather, time etc. Sony is promoting the fact that the Xperia Hello! can recognise different family members and adapting the conversation around that person.

The robot has seven microphones installed at the bottom of the main body and sensors that detect the approach of a person from 3 metres. The body can then swivel by 340 degrees to recognise who is approaching. The robot can also be used as a remote webcam to keep an eye on your family or house while you are away.

We don’t expect Sony to shift a significant volume of Xperia Hello!’s, as it almost looks like a proof of concept in parts. The expensive price tag of 150,000 yen (€1,135, $1,335) will almost certainly put paid to any aspirations of this being a mainstream product. However, it certainly is a charming product that’s typical of Sony.

As things stand, Sony has only announced the Xperia Hello! for a Japan release on 18 November, but we’ll keep you posted if we see this release globally.

  • OMG! That´s so cute!
But since Sony is investing in robotic again (they will release a new pet robot), i just wish them the best. Sony is about this. Audacious moves. I just wish they have this view for the mobile

  • Meh

Wasn’t this originally called the Xperia Agent? So happy that it’s finally being released ^^

  • Yes :) When it was at concept stage

  • kaostheory

Why wouldn’t they just release this teck in a new Abio?

  • Aldi Wan Kenobi

I have an Amazon echo and I do enjoy Alexa very much. But this!!! This is what Sony is all about!!!

  • Emil Oskarsson

Just release an new Xperia tablet with a 4k 10 inch display and 16:10 format and please give us a new update for xz premium instead and stop this bullshit. XD

I would really like to buy this, but sony never give a shit about any accessories. Still so many bugs on the smart bluetooth speakers, and there is absolutely no support on the xperia projector!

Keep an eye for the mobiles next year, the new line up is called, will be called, or at least code named, or the design language is named Mirai, which stands for future i’am correct. I have high hopes. As when Sony took it over from Ericsson, soon they had a design and build quality that took the copy cats years to copy. With a bunch of features that where totally unique and out standing back then. If they can repeat half of it. I’ll be happy.

where the hell is Android 8 for XZ Premium???

  • mixedfish

Who said they weren’t going to release a new Aibo?

I think it’s about time to release Oreo for XZP don’t you think?

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

Android Oreo is still on its early stage. Either enjoy it now with bugs and stability issues or patiently wait for it with fantastic user experience feedback.

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

    ‘Cause why not?

  • Geralt

In Defense of that awesome piece of tech, I would like to say, that it did nothing to be called “As****le”.

But calling an innocent robot as****le, prove that it’s actually u who is an As****le.

  • Prateek Bhanushali

I was just trying to add some humour. Don’t be offended. Yes, I know it’s an awesome piece of technology and other assistant products need to follow this tech.

This tech is much more intuitive and much more feels true to life. I am proud of this product :)

Yea after watching the video I thought to myself too. It’s pretty cool concept or nice way to interact. and I take my comment back. But I still think Xperia team should focus on getting Camera software right and make the best camera phone out there.

  • Warren Chang

seems like a relative to the robot smart speaker BSP-60

  • marcyff2

it won’t. Alexa has a strong hold on the market. And this is not being advertised very well (outside of japan at least), so sales are not going to be amazing.

  • NinJy

Hopping this IA will be included in phones too.

  • Android 8.0 Oreo update ?

  • They’re already on working the Android 8.0 update for XZP . So wait a little bit . Maybe around November i hope .

  • Francis Troy Fabrigas

If they can do both, why not?
This is just part of their Xperia lineup and it’s not that the software developers of their smartphones are also the one who developed the software on this thing. Of course there’s a dedicated team to do that certain thing as well.
In fact, they are actually trying. The only problem isn’t processing (at least it’s not the main problem) but it’s the inefficient hardware. Large megapixes with relatively average aperture rating and lack of any stabilizer, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see such poor low light performance.
Get the sensor to 1/2″ but lower 16mp resolution (that’s like 1.4um pixel size like on Samsung phones, U 11, and Google Pixel 2 phones), brighter f1.8 lens, 5-axis OIS, and pretty much these are just the requirements for a remarkable low light performance.
With more light collected by the sensor, the software can then lower the ISO to further reduce noise and probbly get rid of extreme oversharpening and noise reduction.
Add to that a nice dynamic range boosting software like Google’s HDR+, and it will be a massive winner for me.

So adorable!!! It’s like an robot anime!! If I have plenty of money, I will certainly buy it!!!

  • Geralt

Oh. So I am Sorry. Really very Sorry for my behavior.

    Happy Diwali :D

  • Drelkag

I was all in until that pricetag =/

  • paul_cus

I want a Sony WALL-E pepper shaker! Too cool. Price, not so much.
