Pre-orders open in United States for Sony Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra and L2

by XB on 12th January 2018

in Xperia L series, Xperia XA series

Sony Mobile has opened pre-orders for its latest ‘super mid-rangers’ in the United States. Pre-orders are currently live at Best Buy, with all colour options available to order. While the US market remains a niche one for Sony Mobile, it is great that all of these smartphones will finally have working fingerprint readers straight out of the box. So, US Xperia fans won’t have to mess around importing phones, or changing the firmware’s region.

The Sony Xperia XA2 (H3123) will set you back $349.99 and is available in 4 colours (Silver, Black, Blue and Pink). The Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra (H3223) costs $449.99 and is also available in 4 colours (Silver, Black, Blue and Gold). Best Buy also has Sony’s newest budget model, the Xperia L2 (H3321) up for pre-order at $249.99 in 3 colours (Black, Gold, Pink). All handsets sold are the single SIM models. The expected release date for all phones is February 16 2018.

Thanks Khaled!

I dont think someone would pay that for L2.

  • RockStar2005

Incredibly fair pricing……….switch to Snapdragon from MediaTek, bigger screen, 1080p not 720p, fingerprint scanner, bigger battery!!, better body materials, etc. Incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If THIS is an indication of what’s to come for the flagships, I can’t wait to see new info on those!! I guess Sony Mobile FINALLY figured out how to pull its head out of its ass!! lol Instead of charging too much for less, they’re charging a FAIR amount ($350 for XA2 in the U.S.) for MORE. This is the 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY of the first Xperia phone……………and Sony seems to be honoring that IMHO.

But they DO need to add T-Mobile VoLTE certification to ALL these U.S. unlocked phones. ALL OF THEM!!!!!!! Not just the flagships. Considering that only T-Mobile and AT&T are the only two MAJOR U.S. carriers, those that buy these phones are being shortchanged. It’s possible these budget ones will have it, but I have YET to see confirmation of it.

  • razorg

Xperia L1 is going for ~£150 (~$200). I guess it won’t be long before L2 drops another $50, where it will be a better competitor. XA1 is going for ~£200 (~$280), and Ultra for ~£300 (~$410). I guess the chances of the prices falling for L2 and XA2 are more than the Ultra’s. But they will normalise around XA1 family’s pricess if Sony doesn’t wish to be pricey. Either way, XA2 will be quite competitive against A8 2018, even with the release pricing. Better if prices get close to XA1’s. Hope they will sell well.

  • LTEstyles

But does it support T-Mobile’s VoLTE and WiFi calling?

  • Actman

Okie. Those prices are quite reasonable except L2.

  • Nodar Sixarulidze
  • sxs

Oh you shameless! What an unwanted prick you’re, Nodar. Stop this bs with your so called insider info, you thief!

  • Moisés

Here, if you buy from Sony, Apple or Samsung is always more expensive than those department stores. After a few months difference can be almost 50%.

But L2 has just new battery and fps. The inside is same.

  • razorg

I’m sorry to hear that, man :/ I live in the UK, but my parents live in Turkey, and the taxes etc on mobile phones are OUTRAGEOUS there. Is the same happening in your country? UK pricings are not that bad, at least for me.

  • Night Guy

Xperia xa2 price is exceptional! Love it.

  • joseph carmine nero

She is a delusional fool.just report her as spam.

  • rakuen

    so pricey I think
last year xperia xzs now to be priced less than idr 5.1 M in my country, which is about US$380

  • RockStar2005

I dunno man. Honestly with all the changes & upgrades Sony has given to the XA line for 2018, I would say you’re getting much more for your money’s worth than before. $350 sounds very fair for a new budget phone with these kinds of specs and looks.

  • RockStar2005

I’d like to know that too. IMO, ALL their phones should since in the U.S. the Xperia phones only work on GSM networks like T-Mobile and AT&T. I hope AT LEAST the flagships will get T-Mo VoLTE-certified, but we have yet to confirm that. The XZ1-C had it I guess, and the XZ Premium……….on XDA someone created a mod or whatever that if u root you can get the XZP (and I think XZ1 too?) to offer VoLTE with T-Mo. Sony needs to stop making this difficult. But the fact that they are giving these budget phones a FS IN THE U.S. too (and just in general really) gives us hope. We will see.

  • rakuen

well, with the price drop I expected XA2 get $250 next year
but who will buy a one year old Sony midranger? they dont get updates.

like, who will buy an XA or XA1 right now? XZ or XZs with $380 are more reasonable, they expected to get a “P” version android
Sony just messed up in midrange

  • Moisés

Yes… Xperia are no longer built here, all come from Asia.

Flagships from all brands come higher than $1000. Since Samsung S3.
Z5 Premium was almost $1500. Zenfone 3 Deluxe even more.
Some stores have iphone X 256GB for $2200.

  • Rohit Patil

Pricing seems just about alright. Considering it does drops by 15-20% after a month or so! :-)

  • tristi lumina

    IDR = Indonesia?
Rupiah terlalu lemah ama dolar aja bro makanya berasa mahal meskipun harga rilis perdana kelas mid-range :v

    wkwkw chill~

  • Alvin

Good pricing for XA2 series, but I hope L2 is priced at 199, though. Since it only has bigger battery and fps as the key changes.

  • iia3ezu

Wait a few months for the price discount.

Although personally, I refuse to touch any Mediatek phones, regardless of price.

For the L2’s current price, you can get the Xiaomi Mi A1. It runs stock Android, has Snapdragon 625, a smaller battery and an okay camera.

  • Barricade

Since these devices launched with Android 8.0 Oreo, they have Project Treble on board. This means guaranteed updates.

  • johala02

Maybe time for Sony to push for a carrier deal? Since AT&T backed out from Huawei just before the CES event it would be a opportunity for Sony. Especially now when the fingerprint sensor working in the US market.

  • razorg

Are we sure about Project Treble? XZ1 also released with 8.0 Oreo, but it does not support Treble :/ It’d be a HUGE plus for Sony midrangers if they really supported that.

  • PoweredBySony
  • Moisés

Both are listed already on Sony Mobile page of my country.
If you check the topic design there is info both have GG on screen ( no metion if it is 3, 4 or 5) and metalic body.

Some sites say they are plastic like previous version. But Sony says they are not.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Xz1 and xz1 compact sure do ship with project treble :s xz premium however does not have it since it was updated to oreo :p

  • LTEstyles

Totally agree with you, old sport. I doubt reaching out to T-Mobile Support on Twitter will help. I wish there was a way to know before purchasing it. Maybe Bestbuy will have a demo unit where I can download and install the T-Mobile BYOD app and see if it is fully compatible. If so, I’ll report back soon!

  • razorg

Wasn’t one of the positive sides of this Project Treble that any device equipped with it would receive monthly patches directly from Google itself? Has anyone using XZ1 actually experienced this?

  • RockStar2005

Yeah that’s another thing. You have to actually RESEARCH it beforehand. And that proved to not guarantee anything either last year. I checked on the XZ1 and found 2 articles stating it would have VoLTE on T-Mo. But then I found like 4 saying it didn’t. Turned out it was ONLY the XZ1C that had it out of the box! The XZ1 and XZP only would with that mod.

Yeah that would be awesome! Let us know then if you can. I only really care about the flagships, but I would rather Sony just did it across the board. I’m sorry, but if HTC and OnePlus can make their UNLOCKED phones fully T-Mo VoLTE-compatible (at the very least I mean their flagships, though I think OnePlus only makes ONE phone?), then Sony should too.

  • LTEstyles

Trust me, I know. It was that same article that made me buy the XZ1 only to find out it wasn’t compatible. As much as I love the phone, it was really disappointing to find out this way. It’s sad how we always have to have this conversation whenever a new Sony phone is launched in the US. Hopefully with the first fingerprint sensor working in the US and the XZ1C being 100% TMO compatible, the next flagship device will have it all for us TMO US customers who refuse to own any Samsung, Apple, or Chinese OEM copycat devices.

  • RockStar2005

F that sux man! lol So did u keep it or return it??

Yes……… fuck those other phones, ESP Samsung. Though I will say, I convinced my dad to get the OnePlus 5 and it’s a DAMN nice phone for only $499!

I guess Sony Mobile doesn’t think people will notice, but they are losing money by not doing the certification. Even if they don’t know what VoLTE is, many ppl WILL eventually notice they’re not getting the best reception vs. other T-Mo-compatible phones, and then they will go elsewhere not knowing why. This is where Sony will fail at if they don’t remedy the situation SWIFTLY.

  • LTEstyles

Despite the circumstances, I did end up keeping it. I really love this phone, it just sucks how the fingerprint sensor and the lack of TMO certifications have been disabled.

I think Sony Mobile knows what’s going on, and I really like to think there is something much more than what we think we know. Infringing on patents in the US is a big deal, so I am sure Sony is refusing to pay to use those patents since their phones don’t sell much in the US. They must feel that it is in the best interest of the company to not pay for something if it doesn’t sell. At least that’s what I’m suspecting…

  • RockStar2005

I can understand that. Esp if you don’t make a lot of calls anyway.

Yeah the FS thing sux, but at least that seems to be a thing of the past. I mean, if Sony is giving them to the MIDRANGE line, and U.S. TOO, then it seems like this issue is finally over. I believe the issue was having it on the side………in the U.S. that meant having to pay HP who someone on here told me held the patent for that. But now that they placing the FS on the backside, they no longer have to worry about and I believe that is the main reason why the U.S. isn’t getting them disabled anymore.

I am VERY happy with my LG V30, but there is a chance I may switch back to Sony later this year. It just depends on a lot of things, like of course the VoLTE thing, but also battery life, how good the audio is (it was great on the Z3, but then meh on the X Performance, but then I heard that if you enable AHO ((Automatic Headphone Optimization)) it sounds amazing!), etc. I would prefer they keep offering the 4K HDR screens b/c I think that will help the flagship Xperias stand out amongst the crowd. I would also like them to finally switch over to 18:9 b/c my V30 is that and you essentially get more screen for less body. They seem to be getting rid of bezels which is FANTASTIC too! We will see how things go. The only 2 I’m kinda not confident about but STILL hopeful on are the 18:9 thing and T-Mo VoLTE issue. Oh and 4K HDR too, but more confident at least one flagship this year will get it. They seem to be offering much bigger batteries now which I love, no bezels, etc.

A switch to OLED is in the works too. JPI which Sony I think co-owns is working on an OLED screen that’s supposed to outdo Samsung’s even. I would like to see that happen soon. Then we can start seeing Xperia phones with the ON-SCREEN FS built into them. (Note: On-screen FSs only work on OLED, not LCD. Just read that somewhere this past week.)

I saw the XZ Premium at my local Best Buy a few times now over the last 6 mos. It is STUNNING in person I must say! Even my buddy who was with me the one time thought so. I thought I’d prefer the silver one but the black one looks better in person I believe. I watched a few 4K HDR vids on it on YouTube and they were even more stunning! I feel like Sony’s Xperia flagships are like these well-hidden secrets. But I’m TIRED of them being a secret!! lol Esp when Samsung gets so much attention for their phones.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Haven’t heard about that myself so idk if it’s even true :p About the monthly security patches directly from Google :p

  • rakuen

    bukan gitu bro

$350 kan 4,7 juta kalau dibandingin sama xperia XZ yang harga barunya sekarang 5 juta atau xperia XZs yang 5,5 juta ya berasa mahal

  • tristi lumina

yoits bro tentu, segi teknis milih midrange baru vs flagship beberapa generasi sebelumnya, tergantung selera.

  • Stephen

Just so you know have these up for pre-order at £300 for the XA2. That is good news because since Clove routinely charge about £50 more than anyone else for their phones you should see them for around £250 most places.

No official word if it’s supported or not. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

  • RockStar2005

    Wow ok. Thanks for sharing!

If you get wind of any updates to this, please let me know.

  • SandStorm Power

Even if someone buys the XA1 now, still gets a good phone. and better of all, will receive oreo update
like… I’ve lasted 4 years with my M2 running lollipop… if it wasn’t for the only 8gb rom, 1gb ram and sluggishness of that snapdragon 400 cpu (also, messenger stopped working correctly on the camera matter) i’d still be using it.
temporarily i’m using a samsung j5 2017 in blue. which will be replaced by the XA2
