5G will be heading to 2019 mobile devices thanks to Qualcomm. The company has announced the Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 5G NR (‘5G New Radio’) modem family will be available to a wide range of OEMS in 2019, eighteen altogether, including Sony Mobile. The press release confirms that the new modem will be heading to new devices from these OEMs, which Qualcomm says will enable “low latency, extreme capacity and fiber-like connectivity to the cloud”.

Hope 5G comes here before 2023.
Too sad even 4G is bad here. When it is not H+ instead of 4G.

Personally, I don’t think 5G networks will be available in 2019…BUT, I am still glad that Sony is jumping into the bandwagon together with other manufacturer’s and not be left behind.

For all you know, phone makers will boast about 5G capable phones in 2019 — Sony needs to be right there with them — boasting capability to a non-existent 5G network. :-)

and…any leaked pics of XZ2, XZ2 Compact or XZ Pro?

  • RockStar2005

As long as they are on board……………..don’t want ppl whining about in 2019 if they weren’t. Just like how ppl whine about no OIS on the Xperias (except new Xperia XA2 Ultra, which only has it on front camera). lol

I wish comme. lol Especially the XZ Pro/XZ1 Premium. Hopefully it’s 18:9 and still has headphone jack. lol

We are already building 5g net in norway.

    This weekend, I think.

  • Larger cities in US should be in 5G range of Verizon and AT&T starting in late 2018. Mexican América Móvil may start introducing it in 2019.

Chile’s Entel wants to complete (not sure what it means) 5G capable infrastructure in 2018/2019.
    Similar with Argentina’s Movistar.
5G in Brazil could be available in 2019/2020.

    South Koreo already has 5G.

Other countries’ carriers (e.g.Canada, Japan, China, India, Norway, Germany, UK and Australia) are trying to make 5G available in ~2020.

    Cannot find about others.

That’s only 14 countries of more than 200, but not everybody is having new device every year and that way You can buy 5G capable device cheaper (new or used) when Your country will have 5G network available.

I don’t care a lot about 5G because of cost and all. But the greater news is we will have Xperia in 2019 and beyond that too :)

    Nice to know thanks!

  • Makozak

South Korea already got 5G ? With what phones do they use it ?

  • None. Only for testing purposes with custom made devices. For now there is no 5G capable device for commercial use. But they are the most 5G ready country there is.

  • Deads

Its already known what frequencys will be used for 5G etc. So its only logical to already make the modems and add them to upcoming phones. So that when 5G comes there are already phones out to use it.
