Xperia XZ2 Compact announced with 5-inch FHD+ display and flagship specs

Sony Mobile has announced the Xperia XZ2 Compact, the latest addition to its range of compact flagships, just six months after the introduction of the Xperia XZ1 Compact. The Xperia XZ2 Compact adopts the revamped design that Sony is introducing in 2018, with a curved body and frosted finish, which Sony says will give users the ultimate comfort in-hand.

The Xperia XZ2 Compact is the smallest smartphone to feature a 5-inch HDR display, according to Sony, with the use of a 2:1 (18:9) extended display and resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is also used for extra protection.

Again there is no headphone jack in the Xperia XZ2 Compact, although Sony does throw in a USB-C adaptor in the box. The fingerprint sensor is now on the rear, as expected. The Xperia XZ2 Compact also uses stereo speakers with S-Force Front Surround.

Sony has continued its trend of offering flagship specs in a smaller form factor, which means that the Xperia XZ2 Compact leaves out very little compared to the Xperia XZ2. This includes the use of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, 4GB RAM and 64GB UFS internal storage.

We see the exact same camera specs as in the Xperia XZ2. This means a rear snapper with 1/2.3-inch 19MP image sensor, and 25mm G Lens F2.0, capable of 960 frames per second super slow motion video at 1080p (FHD). 4K HDR movie recording is also possible, like the XZ2. The front camera has a 5MP 1/5-inch Exmor RS sensor with 23mm wide angle lens F2.2.

Battery life of 2870 mAh has been upgraded over the Xperia XZ1 Compact, which had a 2700mAh battery. However, the battery will be powering a bigger screen with higher resolution, so it will be interesting to see if real world battery life is any better.

According to Sony’s specification pages, it looks like a dual SIM option will be available for the first time in Sony’s ‘Compact’ range, which many have asked for over the years. Other specifications include Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, Qualcomm Quick Charge™ 3.0, IP65/IP68 dust and water resistance

The Xperia XZ2 Compact has dimensions of 135 x 65x 12.1mm and weighs 168 grams. It will launch in four colours (Black, White Silver, Moss Green and Coral Pink), when it hits stores globally from March 2018. The handset will come with Android 8.0.0 Oreo out of the box.

looks better than i expected but still nothing for me

    uneven bezels
    uneven speaker design
back is different fron the front no more symmetry
the curved back not a fan of
lcd not ole (oled would have redeemed it)
camera seems to be potruding still

i do LOVE the new wallpapers though i knew they would be beautiful based on the leaks.

  • Gambi

Fingerprint scanner on the back is a dealbreaker, bring back the side scanner !

  • awful design, no headphone jack, fingerprint scanner on the back. Waiting for XZ3 Compact )

  • Moisés

Why all this hate on LCD?

    Most of TVs are LCD.
    Computers use LCD.

They even consider Z9D as tv flagship, not A1E.

  • Bulitz

I like the compact; pretty desirable little beast. But I wonder why 5mp front cam? Seriously, a downgrade.
Looking 4ward to IFA; perhaps some cool phone over the horizon.

  • DBS

Because it’s old inferior technology. And only old TVs are LCD. All new modern TVs are OLED, including Sony’s.

  • Hieu Nguyen

I like that it has a better screen to body ratio than my current Xperia X,
    which is 143 x 69 x 7.7. I don’t mind the thickness. It’ll be my next phone for
    sure :]

  • Liquid Soul

    Very UGLY and FAT design…

  • Ivan

Although in the video they show wireless headphones, so if they do high def audio via Bluetooth, thats ok.
But the design. Oh my god… Just what we needed – another soap

  • Alex ”MiG”

XZ2 1,1cm of thickness… My Xperia Sola is so thin compare to this one…

  • rakuen

I would be very ashamed when I doing presentation with this phone,,

No need to explain the reason,, you all know the reason
Maybe you said its ok with this, its ok with that,, but I know in deep you will be crying to witness something like this,,
    Such a downgrade,,

My XZs are wayyyy better than this,, and its released one year ago

  • hansip

and losing US market? i don’t think Sony will do that.

  • Svnjay

    Asymetrical speakers

  • hansip

LCD with FALD on TV is still much reliable than OLED. So is with phones. Yes OLED is definitely more contrasty, but once Image Retention happening on your screen, you’ll wish to revert back to LCD.

On the other side, OLED on TV is much larger in size than on smartphone, plus they have reset method for TV to clear burned in pixel. in Phones? never heard of that.

  • DBS

I’ve been using AMOLED displays on mobile for the last 6 years. I’ve NEVER had burn in or image retention problems. I have had several problems with LCDs though, from light bleed to burn out of the back panel. So it’s not like LCD is more reliable at all.

  • Khalid Abdi

I think they’re waiting for JDI and JOLED to do their OLEDs not LG

  • boring

  • shehabskull

Not only US but also to support gestures and always on FP scanner.

  • Khalid Abdi

    BTW LCDs are better
Look at Sony’s phone and Google’e Pixel display when the reviewer goes for the settings

  • DBS

I don’t need to see online videos, I’ve seen the screens in the flesh. LCD continues to be crap (also, the idiot either had auto-brightness turned off on the iPixel or the brightness set to the max on the Xperia.)

  • Ryuzaki Raiga

  • mugglearchitect

People will say many things, but I think most of what I have read seemed to love it. “It’s perhaps not the prettiest thing, yet Sony’s new Compact looks to be a supremely capable smartphone… I suspect it will be rather popular.” “…there’s plenty to like with the Sony Xperia XZ2. I, for one, can’t wait to try out the 4K HDR recording, which has the potential to blow every other smartphone’s video capture capability out of the water, and the design, look, feel and specification all look top notch.”,review-5176.html “And with a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device, under the camera lens, the XZ2 Compact feels like it’s all screen and no bezels. I expect this phone to be a breakout hit.” “I don’t mind [the bezels], especially since the space is used to house some fantastic-sounding stereo speakers. Sony says these are 20% louder than those that feature on the XZ1; I’d say they’re much better sounding too.” “They’re fast, fascinating and pretty (to me, anyway)”

I say they did their best, and I think they did something right this time.

  • Виталий

Wait for dual camera and sony`s traditional design.

  • Quentin Grs

Meanwhile Xcompact receive Feb security update in France at least (and we got Oreo last Friday)

  • Akand

OLED is better on black/white reproduction and higher contrast ratio. But still I prefer LCD. Because it produces more natural colour. Well, at least in my eyes.

  • kaostheory

Lol true fanboy. Lcd is older and more reliable, but not by much at this point. I will give you that OLED is thinner and lighter.

  • kaostheory

Can’t really knock the compact, as there’s no competition. Waiting to see what the Hydrogen turns out like or if Razer will up their game.

  • Steve

fingerprint on the side won’t turn back, headphone jack won’t turn back..a long wait for you

  • hansip

Sure, but I’ve seen it happens on OLED and it ain’t pretty. Likewise, I’ve never had problem with LCD too after all these years, in fact my eyes hurt back then when looking at AMOLED saturated color.

  • CheapMonk

So full circle, with the legendary Z3C ! (which i own)

  • Frank

There are tons of phones having similar design in US and why Sony?

  • Pardeep Singh

    Keep waiting. Good luck.

  • jonathan

the pixel has a bad oled, compare to samsung and you will see the difference

  • Khalid Abdi

Yeah but let us see how Sony’s OLED becomes. I’m excited!!!!

  • Khalid Abdi

    Then you saw faulty ones

  • DBS

Nop. I did not. And since I had the XZ1C with me, even less. The XZ2C isn’t much different. And they’re both much worse than an OLED panel.

  • Khalid Abdi

They’re hypocrites. They wanted that a fingerprint on the back and a redesigned look. Don’t they know that ruined as a fans for it

  • Khalid Abdi

No they’re not .Besides this OLED that is here is full of burn ins and incapable of higher nits
    Wait Sony’s JOLED and JDI

  • Moisés

    LED TVs are LCD.

Do you know that according to Sony, the Z9D is the main TV they have?
    Here a Z9D costs R$ 40000, A1E is R$21000

    Samsung TVs are all LCD.

  • Moisés

Not white, they are bit yellow or red.

  • Richard Brutski

The US market is a bunch of apes who think Android=Samsung.

  • raju

Plz lunch in India compact phone

  • Moisés

But on Reddit some Note 8 users had it within 1 week.

Z3+ is the brightest Xperia ( way more than 700 nits). I can use 100% all the time. It is not going to damage, just drain battery faster.

All oled phones have brightness limited. 100% only outdoors, under strong sunlight.
Inside your home, none of them reach 550. All this to prevent burn in.

    Computers dont have oled.

  • Moisés

Pixel 2016 uses Samsung oled, still not good.

  • Moisés

They can use, but have to pay royalties to Apple.
    Owner of power FPS.

  • Gambi

Please list the tons of phones

  • Khalid Abdi

Apple is a lier and doesn’t own a patent but its a greed and Sony was right not pay them.

  • Koi
  • Khalid Abdi

There are some laptops who used OLED and monitors

  • recently i get XZ1 Compact after 4 years with Z1 Compact, so my wait will be long if necessary, lol )

  • Barricade

iPixel. Haters gonna hate. I wonder what phone you’re using. Probably An S8 and dying to get an S9.

  • Román Rodríguez

So XZ1 is better than this one, right? I mean it does have a headphone jack and side fingerprint scanner and 4 gb of ram

  • The One

Why couldn’t they just keep the same footprint and shrink the bezels?!

  • DBS

1 – The iPixel is a shit phone. Deal with it. The only thing it has good is the camera (and even there it’s only good for those who can only point-and-shoot).

2 – You’re dead wrong. I’ve skipped the S8 and I’ve already used the S9. It’s the same crap. Beautiful to look at on display, terrible to use. I’m keeping my S7 until someone puts out a phone worthy of replacing that one. Sony sure as hell won’t do it. Samsung neither and LG and Nokia are out of the picture as well. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • Frank

    S8 S9 V30 5T U11 Google before asking

  • The One

I have a Google Pixel 2 and when people ask if it’s an iPhone (and I say no), before I can even speak, they immediate say, “oh, a Samsung, right?”

    UGH! NO!

  • yes, if you need headphone joc and side fingerprint scanner

  • The One

I don’t think this is related to Apple at all. I’ve heard it was caused by the deal with Verizon that Sony made for the Z4 in the US that was supposed to be the first phone with a FPR built into the Power Button and was supposed to be an exclusive feature on Verizon phones. Sony wasn’t allowed to sell any other phones in the US with that feature until the contract expires. Not sure when that is, but it looks like Sony finally gave up on waiting for it and just re-designed the phone to have a separate FPR and Power Button to get around this terrible contract with Verizon.

  • DBS

Yes they are. It’s just a fact, mate.
And stop bullshitting. There’s no burn in on the OLED on the video. And whilst there ARE burn-in problems on the iPixel 2 XL panel, that’s Google’s fault for shitty software.
The V30 uses the same panel and doesn’t suffer from that problem. And the normal iPixel 2 as well as a ton of other phones with Samsung’s AMOLED panels don’t either.

Sony is waiting for a miracle, probably. JOLED will not be any better than pOLED or amOLED. And it won’t be available anytime soon. Sony will be out of the phone business before JDI has mobile OLED displays for shipment lol

  • DBS

If you don’t like the saturated colour of AMOLED displays, that’s a valid opinion.
You would have enjoyed the screen on the iPixel 2 then ’cause Google released it with colour calibration that was similar to that of an LCD panel. Of course, they then had to add a saturated option ’cause most people didn’t like the dull LCD colours on it. But there’s an option.

  • DBS

As The One said, it’s not Apple, it’s Verizon and only in the US.
Sony pretty much f*cked EVERYONE’s experience just for the sake of the US market.
I sure hope Americans buy at least 5 million Xperias. ’cause the people outside the US that Sony screwed with this idiotic decision sure won’t.

  • DBS

    Yes, it is.
This one’s bigger and less pleasant to use thanks to the fingerprint scanner placement.

  • Khalid Abdi

NO I’m bullshitting and its true. Its just media talking the same they got rid of 16:9 and the headphone jack and i didn’t say the burn in was on the video I said both LG and Samsungs OLEDs have due to their build and expensive.
No Sony is capable of delivering 4K HDR RGB OLED with less expensive way because they found a way

  • Khalid Abdi

You don’t know that they won’t buy it. At the end of the day people will buy it but we don’t know it will be less or more

  • Barricade

    1. It’s Pixel.

    2. It’s not a shit phone, it has great specs, front facing stereo speakers, a decent screen (a good one even if you get lucky), runs stock software and has a guaranteed support for 3 (or was it 4?) years (lol at your Samsung Galaxy S7). Oh, and a good camera is an understatement. Especially now the Pixel VisualCore is activated.

Is it the best phone on the market? Nope. Is it a shit phone? Most definitely not.

    3. I don’t really know what you’re doing on this site called Xperiablog when you literally have nothing constructive to say and are not interested in Sony’s offerings.

  • ChiTownT3x

Honestly think the current XZ1 Compact is better than this thing. Smaller form factor, willing to bet better battery due to screen size and 720p, both have 4gig ram, the 845 isn’t a giant leap from the 835 and rumor has it this will launch for $740 U.S. Meanwhile the XZ1 Compact is under 500 and will continue to drop in price once this is released. Not to mention the XZ1 still has a headphone jack.

  • Khalid Abdi

You said $740!!! The Samsung galaxy S9 is $719. They need to decrease the amount of money for both phones by $50-100 so they can have an advantage over the galaxy S9/S9+ if they want the American people to buy it. Otherwise, they will fail because the s9 and s9 plus are better than them

  • CheapMonk

Now i need 2 fingers instead of one to login , brilliant !!!

  • RockStar2005

Well at least you people who are buying the XZ1 Compact AND have Verizon will get VoLTE. No clue on T-Mobile and AT&T people. XZ1 which DESERVES it even more cuz it’s a flagship isn’t getting it on T-Mo as far as I know. So consider yourselves lucky.

“Oddly, Sony says the XZ2 Compact will be certified for use on Verizon when it launches, but the same doesn’t seem to be true of the flagship. (Both phones will support AT&T and T-Mobile.)”

  • CheapMonk

or keep the 4.6″ screen with a higher rez, reduce the bezels, the footprint and the weight ? In a nutshell, a compact ? something unique in the Android space

  • azzido

    Who cares paid reviews?

Sales will show my deer, sales…

  • Carl Key

They are expensive but now the appareance is cheaper. They removed the audio jack, lowered the selfie camera to 5 Mp while was 8 Mp before, they don’t have OIS being a flagship phones. And the compact comes with less features. What were the designer thinking while developed these phones? That we are idiots to pay more for less? No! No money to buy these crap. Do it better next time if you want us to be customers again, we deserve it in future models. Now searching out there to buy new phones from other brand. Bad move Sony, sad.

  • Shane Falco

New Sony Xperia Mac Donald edition

  • CheapMonk

“another soap” just that, it will slide faster when not on a horizontal plane

  • George Masterson

1st) Dear Sony, I honestly expected more, way more tbh.
    127 height, 80% of screen-to-body ratio, XZ1C design.
The compact line is supposed to directly be in the category of COMPACT phones like iPhone SE, 56
Now you have made a not so compact phone which rivals fully iPhone 7, 8.

Anyway, maybe next year, at least XZ1 compact will get a nice price drop and it will be a sweet deal.

  • Conan

look i’m not usually one for whinging about new flagship spec announcements, but……..overall this is preeettty disappointing.

    – i actually like the bubble shape. looks like it would feel nice in the hand.
    – FHD screen is probably a worthwhile upgrade.
    – better use of front panel real estate
    – colours look nice i guess?

    – TWELVE MILLIMETRES thick? that’s completely absurd.
    – no jack
    – 18:9 is, as we’re all pretty much agreed on, pointless
    – scanner placement. the xperia side scanners are absolutely superb
    – bump in screen size and res but negligible bump in battery capacity. this means it won’t reach the spectacular battery life of the xz1c.
    – no rear camera improvement over the xz1c, and the front camera appears to be worse? (5MP down from 8MP)

so…. finding it very hard to get excited about this. keen to have a play with one tho, if it comes to australia.

  • ChiTownT3x

Just an FYI the XZ1 Compact does have VoLTE on T-Mobile.

  • RockStar2005

Hey ChiTown (I’m from Chicago too, suburbs),

Yeah I know. But that makes ZERO sense to me b/c why would you give that to the sub-flagship but not the flagship?? You’re tellin’ me more ppl are gonna buy the XZ2 Compact than the XZ2??

  • RockStar2005

    ROFL!!! F Samsung!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • RockStar2005

I really wish we could get a STRAIGHT answer on this. Is it Verizon or Apple that has owns the patent????????????????????

  • DBS

And I told you I never EVER saw any AMOLED screen with burn in (apart from the iPixe 2 XL).

By the way, Sony isn’t capable of offering anything as JDI doesn’t yet have the capacity to mass produce those displays. They *might* be able to do it one day, but they currently can’t handle the production.

  • Khalid Abdi

And I told you in a previous conversation that my brother has a s6 edge and it has a burn in

Yes it is because both JOLED and JDI said we will enter mass production by 219 which means this year they will start making it plus both of them asked some companies to fund up to $ 1 billion

  • DBS

1 – It’s an iPhone rip-off, it’s an iPixel. I call it whatever the hell I want. If I want to call it a Google Turd, I’ll call it a Google Turd.

2 – A phone that costs over 800€, comes with a barely useful version of Android, lacks microSD expansion, lacks wireless charging and is filled with Google bloatware, in 2018, is a shit phone.
Oh and newsflash: Samsung phones get 2 years of software updates. And because their version of Android isn’t so incomplete as Google’s, they don’t need to rush the updates out. LOL at that pathetic thing you got and think is “split-screen”.

The iPixel camera is only great – with the VisualCore – if you point and shoot. But here’s the deal: some of us who actually know a bit about photography and like to control the shots ourselves prefer to shoot manually. And guess what? You can’t with the Pixel camera.
If Google added a fully featured manual mode (like LG’s or Samsung’s), THEN they’d definitely have the best camera on Android. But as long as they only cater to self-centred tweens that only care for HDR filled photos to post on Instagram, that crown belongs to someone else (and no, it’s not Samsung).

3 – It’s none of your business what I’m doing here. This isn’t your site. I’ve been here for years, I’ve actually used Sony phones and, would you look at that…I even have one (which is a glorified music player since it’s pretty useless for anything else)! Do you? Who knows? You might even be using an iPixel. And yet, I couldn’t care less why you’re in this site.

  • DBS

And how on Earth did he manage to do that? Not with normal use of the phone, that’s for sure.

If they’re only entering mass production in 2019, then they AREN’T capable of mass producing it. We’re in 2018 still.
For all their promises, they might even say they’ll be able to produce flying phones in 2019. Until they deliver, all that JDI does is vaporware.

  • Khalid Abdi

By the way don’t underestimate them, they can pull it off because I was surprised when it was reported they will start mass production by 2019.
JOLED is for the TVs and monitors and JDI for the smartphones
JOLED is formed by Sony and Panasonic so its their OLEDs with the government and Japanese businessmen
JDI is formed by Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba and their partners are the government with businessmen
In the end of Last Year JDI bought %15 of JOLED
Even Toyota also funding the OLED
So the whole country is doing it so they can Pull it OFF
BTW, JOLED made 4K OLED panel for ASUS monitor

  • DBS

I wasn’t. They had already announced the production for 2018, now 2019…they keep making announcements and never deliver. Now they asked for more funding from the owners to deliver. We’ll see if they do it. So, as you can see, they had to beg for funding. And still they haven’t delivered. And no, the Japanese government has no part in their success or not. The Japanese government doesn’t normally meddle with business companies.

JDI is the sigla for JapanedeDIsplay (the name of the company). JOLED is just the name they came up with for their OLED panels.

The Asus OLED monitor is very promising HOWEVER…it was just announced…AND no launch date was given. It could come out this year…it could come out in 2019…or it could even never come out.

  • Khalid Abdi

By they way, it wasn’t now when they announced for funding. It was at the end of last year. And I heard from some one that they will start now
Don’t worry they will deliver and JDI stands for Japan Display Inc
JDI have many subsidiaries and they pull it off because for one thing the iPhone, Apple was their biggest customer so they want to make so apple comes back to them.

INCJ corporation is the one with the businessmen and the government. Check it.

Asus said that they will release it later this year

  • Akand

That’s what I am also thinking. Sony just ignored us to win American people where they’ll never be able to sell more than 20k phones. Wishing Sony best of luck.

  • Akand

They could have implemented FPS on the side without using a power button. Power button could have been placed somewhere else, a bit upper or lower or even on the other side or on top. That would have been a real Sony move.
    Now they just failed horribly.

  • Akand

You got a point. But They could have implemented FPS on the side without using a power button. Power button could have been placed somewhere else, a bit upper or lower or even on the other side or on top. That would have been a real Sony move.
    Now they just failed horribly.

  • Khalid Abdi

    Your right bro
Honestly no one thought of this idea. It’s Brilliant!!!!!!

  • Khalid Abdi

    Your right

  • Akand

That’s the point, man. I have been long waiting for you to say this. It’s a matter of taste. Yes I agree OLED/AMOLEDs have better black level and contrast ratio, on the other hand LCDs are more natural and eye friendly.
    Choice is yours.
For me LCD is more preferable. If Sony move to OLED, I’ll try to find a LCD phone first. I love natural colour, not the vivid over saturated bright colour which doesn’t match with the real world experience.

  • DBS

But that’s the thing: while an OLED display does NOT have to be saturated, an LCD will always fail to deliver deep blacks and better contrast.
That’s why I maintain OLED is the better technology and why it’s replacing LCD.

I’m perfectly fine with people that prefer LCDs or that don’t like OLED panels that are over-saturated and lack an option for a “natural” colour grading.
I personally just don’t accept to use a phone as a daily driver that lacks an OLED display ;)

  • DBS

INCJ isn’t actually a business. It’s a private entity that the Japanese government helped create to fund and foster Japanese technological innovation. The government’s involvement in it is the same as when a Western government creates an agency to promote renewable energies for example.

I heard no official statement from Asus regarding that. Care to share a link?
I personally hope so. My PC monitors are the ONLY monitors I use daily that are still LCDs and I can’t stand them anymore since all my other displays are OLED. So the sooner OLED monitors start shipping the better. I don’t really care if from JDI, LG Display or Samsung.

  • Akand

IPS-Neo has also very good black level and contrast ratio, almost near OLED. Problem is Sony isn’t using it. You prefer OLED that doesn’t mean LCD is shit. But you always talk like it’s a shit. So far I know, OLED has more issues than LCD.
Actually OLED vs LCD is like fashion conscious smartness vs simply wisdom. Casual vs Formal. HipHop vs Melody.

  • Uzair Syed

As usual, would love to upgrade from my Z3v but still no new Verizon compatible phone. Finally off contract too. I think one of the things I do stick around for is remote play.

  • Uzair Syed

I’m sure we would buy that many Xperias if they actually advertised, sold through carriers, and were compatible with our nations largest network.
SONY does none of this. :(
    Still on Z3v

  • And who’s fault is that ?

Sony COULD have been a top choice in the US. One thing that made them stand out is their build quality. Z2 was a beautiful phone during those times. Sony could have really pushed their marketing to make their phones a well known name.

Samsung worked hard to get where they were. And good on them. I love Xperia phones, but Sony has sat on their asses for so long. Samsung deserves their position.

  • Richard Brutski

Walk into any Walmart, ATT, Tmobile. What do they have on display? 6 s8’s, 4 S7’s, 3 S7’s and 5 of each iPhone. Then one budget LG in the corner. That is like saying EVERYONE sat on their asses, which they did not.

  • arcu de triumf

Now that is official, I’ll pass this one. NEXT ! 18:9? Please! What’s next? 27:9?

  • Ziggy

Not Apple, HP is the owner of the power button fingerprint sensor that they don’t even use. American patent laws are ridiculous.

Only in the USA the fps power button Sony couldn’t use. Everywhere else it was used and is perfection.

  • Tann

Nah, it will clear out in a year of waiting to see if they return them. Then, goodbye Sony for good.

  • Ziggy

XZs is incredibly good, got mine last year in April. The only kind of shame about it is that while it could perfectly run the 3D Creator app, Sony decided to cut XZs out of it and only support the Autumn phones XZ1 and XZ1C with it.

  • Emil Oskarsson

Well the lcd screen on xz premium is still better than the one on iPhone x and pixel 2 despite being LCD so.. :) Just compare them irl and check videos on YouTube :)

  • CheapMonk

Looking at the pictures side by side you would think the XZ1 is the latest model with many improvements ; the look is much more sexy (the XZ2 looks ugly), it is smaller, lighter, has a headphone jack and a FPS on the power button !!! and now it will be cheaper , what’s not to love ?

  • Farsiris
  • Gambi

None of these have side power button / fingerprint scanner combo.

  • Vipin Rahul

disappointed. The compact model is not available in Indian website yet again.

  • singh

yes sure right my mates s8 is very poor in daylight , you have to have it at full brightness all the time, were my xz is fine with half brightness, LCD screens much better more natural and realistic colours.

Also release it on time in the US market. Sony lost footing by releasing 4 to 5 months later than other markets which were already receiving sony phones,1 to 2 months later than every other market.

Samsung established itself well with their smartphones….as you said. now do they have bloatware? yes loads. Does the phone ever feel slow not in slightest (note 8 is the one i am using) the transitions are so smooth i want to use the meme of the guy feeling its face every time i use it. I loved sony i did, but One plus outdid them and Samsung outdid oneplus(in my opinion obviously)

And still awful quality. Dead )

  • Khalid Abdi

Yes but its a private and public in the same time, yet, they work as private. Check Google’s description.

I heard from one the reviewers who had it in CES but wait I’ll check and send you the link. But what the reviewer said that they said for later release but didn’t specify at when. Right now I read an article which came in 10 Jan, that and I qoute “ASUS has not released any details regarding pricing and availability timeframes of the ProArt PQ22UC. Meanwhile, JOLED says that its 21.6” 4K OLED panels are in production”.
So I think they will release it in the second half of the year

  • Khalid Abdi

Yeah even Frumi said stay tuned too

US Xperia fans, pls tweet @sonyxperia: “Two words: CARRIER SUPPORT”
This is arguably the best mini-phone out there. There is still a market for smaller phones, but most small phones compromise on features and specs. Sony would basically have this market to itself if it got off its ass and secured carrier support and distribution.

    Guys check this out
The OnePlus 6 will have a notch

And all of you as well as I were blaming Sony’s design and fingerprint with removal of the 3.5 mm port

  • The One

Like I said, it’s likely not a patent issue – especially since the Razer Phone has it and sells in the US, and no iPhones use a combination power button and FPR. Blame Sony for whatever terrible business decision they made.

  • RockStar2005

Yeah but if I ever see Apple using it, I will swear vengeance on them. lol

  • CG

Well. I guess I won’t get the XZ2 “compact” and keep my old Sharp SHV33:

    For comparison:
    – Weight: 120g
    – Length: 126mm
    – Thickness: 8.9mm
    – camera with OIS
    – 3.5mm jack
    – Battery: 2810 mAh
    – 73.2 % screen to body ratio
    – 120Hz panel

And this was possible in 2015 !

So I was hoping Sony would have been able to do a similarly portable compact phone with a good camera and today’s performance levels. I guess not (and Sharp can’t do it any more either) probably because all these brands are now only interested in quick profit and getting the more new models they can in the shortest time span = cost-cutting design, components and manufacturing.

  • SonyMob

As expected Sony is not launching XZ2C in India, this trend started from Z5C and then they skipped XC , XZ1C. Really stupid move by Sony.
if they are launching bigger bro , why not launch compact with smart pricing?
Also never understood strategy of Sony to have so many older flagships on sale in market at same time. Like currently you have XZ, XZs , XZ1 and now incoming XZ2 also.

  • SonyMob

they wont launch it, just check sonymobile india webpage , only XZ2 is listed.

  • raju

    Why any reason

  • mrand

It won’t be $740 in the US. That includes Swedish VAT – just pulling that off makes it $600 – same as XZ1c

  • Mac

    What about external sd-card?

  • Biancoceleste

I personally wouldn’t use language so harsh but essentially, what you’ve said is pretty accurate.

  • Biancoceleste

Sad to see Sony lose their uniqueness but that’s the trend now it seems. Pretty sad.

  • Simon Strandman

It’s pretty thick and 5″ isn’t compact any more so what’s the point? I’ll pass thanks.

  • Chris Lo

the first Compact that is not compact, good job Sony :/

  • Томица

I’m honestly curious, why would placing fingerprint on the side make Sony lose USA market? And more importantly, why do you think placing it on the back will save Sony in the USA?

  • hansip

Because that would make Sony legally forbidden to give user the FPS as feature clearly. For the second question, i didn’t say that FPS alone will save them, that’s clearly your saying. a double negative doesn’t always make it a positive.

  • Томица

But that does not answer my question. How does placing FPS to the back of the phone make it legally acceptable?

  • hansip

huh? legally acceptable wasn’t the question. Plus it’s out of my knowledge on which US patent/legal issue that forbids them. The thing is back FPS is legal in US, based on devices that is legally marketed there, a.k.a it’s a common feature, unlike how Sony implemented it.

You could argue that both FPS serves the same function(scan and power on), but that’s why it, i think, is more of a patent infringement rather than just exclusive contractual agreement, where back FPS will give you additional power button, whereas Sony’s side FPS is all in one.
