[IMG]Sony Mobile’s operations is run out of two main offices, one in Japan and the other in Sweden. The Japanese entity is called ‘Sony Mobile Communications Inc’, while the office in Sweden is called ‘Sony Mobile Communications AB’.

Local Swedish media is reporting that the Lund office is cutting a further 60 jobs, which is on top of the 200 jobs that was announced at the end of last year. Those at risk include both engineers and support staff. This is part of the continuing savings programme where Sony Mobile is looking to halve costs by the end of March next year.

On top of the 260 people that have already been affected by these cuts, another 150 people have also been affected. Around 100 now work in group-wide Research & Development, while another 50 have switched to Network Communications roles.

As a consequence, the ‘Sony Mobile Communications AB’ will eventually close, with all remaining Sony Mobile employees in Lund migrating to new contracts with Sony Nordic, and becoming part of Sony’s operations in Europe.

Sony’s site manager at Lund, Stefan Andersson emphasised mobile development continues despite this news. “In concrete terms, this means that we will become a Sony site, but the mobile segment will remain. This is part of a long-term strategy where we streamline our ability to use our expertise in wireless communication in more segments than mobiles,” said Andersson.

It looks like Sony Mobile will eventually be run with a very lean team. It’s no wonder we’ve seen so many of Sony’s smartphone apps close over time. What do you make of this news? Do you think this puts a nail in the coffin of Sony ever being competitive in the mobile space again? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.
