[IMG]Sony has formed a partnership with start-up Light to jointly develop and market multi-image camera sensor solutions for smartphones. Light is a leader in advanced computational imaging, and the agreement is to provide solutions with smartphones with four or more cameras.

In particular, Light’s multi-camera technology reference designs will combine with Sony’s image sensors. “We are entering an entirely new era of intelligent imaging applications that will transform smartphones,” said Dave Grannan, CEO and co-founder of Light.

Sony’s Hank Ochi, president of Component Solutions Business Division, also seemed excited about the deal, saying that the new agreement “will allow us to work together to evolve and speed up the design of today’s multi-image sensor enabled connected devices. Starting today, our jointly developed reference designs will help our smartphone OEMs to quickly and easily enhance the imaging capability of multi-camera enabled smartphones.”

All of Sony’s smartphones announced tomorrow at MWC 2019 will feature dual or triple rear cameras, so we’re still a little way off a device with 4 cameras, but it can’t be too far off. However, it points to a bright future for pocket-sized photography.
