KazSony CEO Kazuo Hirai has been talking at the D11 Conference in the United States and spoke candidly about the company’s position in that market. Talk of an Xperia Z heading to a US carrier has been mooted for a while now, with all signs pointing to T-Mobile. Kaz confirmed the US availability at the conference, although he gave no hints as to who it will head to.

“We will make an announcement about the Xperia Z with a carrier very shortly,” said Kazuo Hirai. COO Phil Molyneux followed this up saying that it could launch in the coming weeks. Kaz pointed to increased marketing in the region to help sell the device and noted how the Xperia Z managed to stay atop the Japanese best-selling charts for six weeks in a row.

“We were able to do that — it’s above and beyond Sony technology. It’s the Sony brand. Think about the marketing prowess we bring, ” Hirai said. It won’t be easy to crack the US market though and Kaz admitted that “we still have a lot of stuff to do here in the market, there is no question about it.” However, Hirai believes that Sony has the necessary building blocks to succeed. “I firmly believe the DNA is there to be back in that position,” Hirai said.
