Sony will soon start to bake the Dropbox app into new Xperia devices according to Christine Moon, head of integrating Dropbox into new devices. BuzzFeed reports that Sony is a new partner for DropBox, which will soon find its way into new Sony phones starting with the Xperia Z3.
However, rather than appearing as just bloatware, Dropbox wants to provide integration beyond just baking in the application. Dropbox is looking for deeper integration to add value to the partnership.
“What we want to do is do more of that. The added value is having Dropbox integrated in a smart way. This device (a Samsung Galaxy Note 3) comes with an application that tracks my steps. What if over time because I’m prone to diabetes I want to track it over many years? What if it had a cloud component? Those are the things that we think about, what is the added value we can bring? You can see more of those integrations going forward, coming with many different partners,” says Moon.
Dropbox is one of the first apps we install when we get a new device, so it’s great to see this partnership. Whilst Dropbox doesn’t come baked into the Xperia Z3 right now, we imagine it will in future firmware updates.
