Sony Mobile has confirmed that it will support Sinhala font rendering in the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update. Up until now, Sony Xperia devices have not been able to render Sinhala fonts in Android Lollipop, so this will be welcome news for those in Sri Lanka (Sinhalese is one of the national languages of Sri Lanka).
However, it’s worth noting that whilst font rendering support means you will be able to read Sinhala content in an application such as Facebook, Sony will not be adding Sinhala support as a phone language. This means that the Sinhala language in the Xperia menu settings will not be supported.
Sony statement on Sinhala language support
“In the Android 6.0 upgrade, we will support Sinhala font rendering. This means that if there is Sinhala content in an application, for example when you are watching BBC Sinhala in Facebook, it will be rendered and you will be able to read it. However, the Xperia devices will not support Sinhala as a phone language. We will for example not support Sinhala menus.”
Thanks binku and budditha!
