Pre-orders for the upcoming Xperia X and Xperia XA have now opened at Amazon.co.uk, priced at £279.99 and £549.99 respectively. Amazon UK has also given an indication on the release dates of both handsets, the Xperia X is due to land on 20 May 2016, whilst the Xperia XA will follow on 10 June. These dates tie in with Clove pre-orders, which has the Xperia X on 23 May and Xperia XA on 6 June.
However, it is the price of the Xperia X in particular that seems particularly ambitious. Remember this is not the Xperia X Performance that comes equipped with a Snapdragon 820 chipset and IP68 water certification. The Xperia X has a Snapdragon 650 chipset and no dust/water certification. For our previous look at the spec comparison click here.
Right now you can pick up the LG G5 and Samsung Galaxy S7 flagships for less money than what Sony is asking for the Xperia X. The LG G5 costs £499, whilst the Samsung Galaxy S7 £526 – Sony wants £550 for the Xperia X. Even the upcoming HTC 10 is only £20 more than the Xperia X right now, with pre-orders at £569.99.
We’re not sure whether this pricing is a mistake, but we can’t imagine too many will pick the Xperia X over the latest LG/Samsung flagships that cost less money. Let’s hope that once Sony kicks-off its own Xperia X pre-order programme, it will be a little more attractive.
