Japan Display Inc (JDI) has announced that it has started to mass produce a new 5-inch low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) LCD display that will pack an impressive 1440 × 2560 pixel resolution, giving it a pixel density of >500 PPI.
JDI has said that it has reduced the LCD power consumption in this WQHD resolution by using new materials that allows the panel power consumption to reduce depending on the display image signal. The LCD also uses JDI’s second generation Pixel Eyes in-cell technology, resulting in thinner borders, deeper black levels and better use with wet fingers.
The LCD module also has a driver IC (integrated circuit chip) which incorporates an embedded upscaling function from 1080p to 1440p. This would enable it to display WQHD images from a FHD designed chipset, by automatically converting the images.
JDI was formed through the consolidation of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba’s display businesses back in 2012 and its displays have been used in various Xperia models, so there is a chance that we could see this display end up in a future model.
Sony has never released an Xperia model sporting this wide quad-HD (WQHD) resolution format before. It did come close with the Verizon Xperia Z4v, before the phone was cancelled just prior to launch.
