Sony’s EC270 cable allows Xperia XZ2 users to listen and charge simultaneously

For those looking to pick up either the Sony Xperia XZ2 or XZ2 Compact, you’ll be well aware that neither handset has a 3.5mm headphone jack. For those that don’t want to get rid of their current wired setup, then Sony is including a USB Type-C to 3.5mm Audio Jack Adapter in the box.

Of course, we all know that a big limitation of this is that you cannot charge your device whilst also listening to music at the same time. This is likely to be a limitation for all mobiles that leave out the jack, unless you go wireless, or who knows, we might see phones with dual USB Type-C ports at some point.

Anyway, Sony is trying to do its bit to help to ease the pain by launching a USB Type-C 2-in-1 Cable EC270, that will allow users to both listen to their wired headphones, and charge their device via USB Type-C at the same time. The cable will also work with a headsets in-line mic and remote control.

There are some restrictions though, quick charging is not supported. Also, if you happen to own some of the older noise-cancelling headsets such as the MDR-NC31EM and MDR-NC750, then you’re out of luck as they’re not supported. If you have a non-Xperia mobile, then we understand this cable will not work with your phone due to the specific pin configuration that is compatible with the Xperia models only.

An easier solution to all of this, would have been if Sony kept the 3.5mm jack. That would have been the consumer friendly option, rather than dealing with dongles. We’re not sure why Sony put us in this mess, but this is the future (we guess).
