The Sony Xperia 1 has been formally announced for the Japanese market. Two carriers have so far picked up the device, including au by KDDI, where it will have model number SOV40, and Softbank, where it is expected to have model number 802SO. One of the curious things about the Japanese Xperia 1, is that Sony has gimped the model versus what we’ll see internationally.

The Japanese version has internal storage of 64GB, whereas it is 128GB everywhere else. This is an unusual move for Sony’s home market, where most times this scenario plays out in the opposite way i.e. the Japanese Xperia models get better features.

The Xperia 1 will be available in all four colours (Purple, Black, White, Grey) from au by KDDI, and three colours from Softbank (Grey is missing). The handset will launch in mid-June, and pre-order options are available right now.
