Xperia 1 II and Xperia 10 II leaked – Sony is back in the game

in Rumours, Xperia 1 series, Xperia 10 series

Sony was due to announce its latest Xperia smartphones at its MWC video reveal tomorrow morning, however it looks like everything has been revealed ahead of time. XDA writer Max Weinbach who has a good reputation for previous leaks, has just revealed full details of both Sony phones due to be announced – meet the Xperia 1 II and Xperia 10 II.

Now, we’re not exactly sure on the nomenclature – is it Xperia 1 II, or Xperia 1ii, or Xperia 1 Mark II (or Xperia 1 Mark 2). We won’t know for sure until tomorrow, but it’s an interesting change in direction for Sony. Is Sony adopting the language it uses for its cameras (for example, RX100 II, RX100 III etc), it sure looks like it and suggests that the smartphones are coming from one-Sony, a holistic view, as has been promised for many years.

Sony Xperia 1 II – 2020 flagship Sony smartphone

Sony finally working as one team can only be good news for Xperia fans, as the spec sheet on the newest flagship the Xperia 1 II is everything we hoped for. This is Sony’s first 5G phone (sub 6 only, no mmWave, which should be fine for most locations) and it has a 6.5-inch 21:9 4K HDR OLED display with a 90Hz-equivalent screen that Sony is dubbing “Motion Blur Reduction”. Given that Sony says this is ‘90Hz equivalent’ makes us believe that the panel is not running at 90Hz, but instead using some proprietary technology to give a similar effect.

Camera duties are taken care of by a triple-12MP rear array, which includes a 12MP 16mm 1/2.6-inch sensor, a 12MP 24mm 1/1.7-inch sensor with OIS and a 12MP 70mm 1/3.4-inch sensor. This means we will get 3x optical zoom which should be great for day-to-day use. A 3D ToF (time-of-flight sensor) is also present to help with portrait shots, and this is the first Sony phone with a ZEISS lens (no more Sony G Lens). Selfie duties are taken care of by an 8MP front-facing camera.

Also, big kudos to Sony for listening to its fans. The 3.5mm headphone jack is back. Given how every other manufacturer apart from LG, has scrapped the 3.5mm jack including Samsung this year with the S20 series, it is fantastic to see Sony bring it back for its flagship devices. It never made sense for Sony to exclude it, particularly given the company’s audio heritage, so we’re delighted to see it return.

Other great features include a 4000mAh battery with wireless charging, stereo front-facing speakers and IP65/68 dust and water resistance. The phone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G chipset, 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage.

The Xperia 1 II has dimensions of 166 x 72 x 7.9mm and weighs 181 grams. It will launch in at least two colours (black and purple).

Sony Xperia 10 II – 2020 mid-range Sony smartphone

Sony is also beefing up its mid-range smartphone for 2020, sporting an OLED display and water resistance for the first time. The Xperia 10 II has a 6.0-inch 21:9 FHD OLED display and will also be IP65/IP68 certified for dust and water resistance.

The Xperia 10 II will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chipset, 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. There’s no word on whether microSD memory card support is included, but we’d be surprised if it wasn’t.

The mid-ranger includes a triple rear camera array (12MP 26mm; 8MP 52mm; 8MP 16mm), as well as a 8MP selfie front-facing camera.

Other features include a 3.5mm headphone jack, with LDAC and DSEE HX, high-res audio support. Sony has included a 3600mAh battery. It has dimensions of 157 x 69 x 8.2 mm and weighs 151 grams. The Xperia 10 II will be available in Black and White colours when the phone launches.

Thanks Feanor!
