[IMG]As Xperia fans, we can be thankful that Sony has not ridden the bandwagon to introduce notches and punch-hole cameras into their devices. All of Sony’s smartphones gives users a full view of their smartphone display barring the budget Xperia L4, which sports a notch. Sony has continued to largely ignore the trend of notches which we are thankful for, but will that continue to be the case going forward?

Well LetsGoDigital uncovered a new patent filed by Sony that was approved on 14 May 2020 and published in the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) database. The patent highlights a smartphone device which incorporates both a pop-up selfie camera, as well as a ‘pop-down’ speaker.

It looks like the phone has a special sliding mechanism that can both slide up to reveal the camera, and slide down to reveal the speaker. There is also some language in the patent filing that the slide-down speaker may be somewhat automatic, opening to reveal the speaker depending on what media is being consumed. However, we’re not sure how this would work in practice, as we can only see it as being distracting.

Big companies file many patents that never see the light of day, so we may not see this tech ever appear in an Xperia smartphone? However, would you like to see a pop-up camera? Or are you happy with the size of bezels on current devices? Let us know in the comments below.
