[IMG]Sony Japan has announced the Xperia 8 Lite (J3273), which is basically a SIM-free version of the Xperia 8 model that launched last year. This move follows a number of other handsets that have gone SIM-free in Japan recently, including the Xperia 1 II, Xperia 1 and Xperia 5.

We imagine that Sony has re-released the model to appeal to the growing SIM-free mid-range market in Japan. Sony has also significantly dropped the price – the Xperia 8 Lite will be released for 29,800 yen (£213, €238, $281), which compares to the Xperia 8 that cost 54,000 yen (£386, €430, $508) at launch in October 2019.

The Xperia 8 Lite is not exactly the same as the Xperia 8, there are a couple of minor differences. The Xperia 8 Lite has a slight bump in battery capacity (2870mAh vs the Xperia 8 which had 2760mAh). However, the Xperia 8 Lite loses DSEE HX audio support, which upscales an existing sound source to near high-resolution sound quality.

The rest of the specs are identical. The Xperia 8 Lite has a 6.0-inch FHD+ (2520 × 1080) 21:9 display, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset, 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. It features dual rear cameras with a 12MP F1.8 and an 8MP F 2.4 lens combination. The front-facing camera is 8MP.

Other features include IP65/68 dust and waterproof protection, NFC, headphone jack and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The Xperia 8 Lite weighs 170 grams with dimensions of 69mm × 158mm × 8.1mm.

The Xperia 8 Lite will launch with Android 9, and Sony has confirmed it will receive Android 10 in the future (the Xperia 8 already has Xperia 10). The Xperia 8 Lite will be released on 1 September 2020 in Black and White colours. It will be available through MVNOs such as Nuro Mobile, Mineo and IIJmio.
