Android 4.2 being tested on the Xperia arc S?

by XB on 11/10/2012

in Android, Xperia arc

There have been a number of reports over the last few days of an Android 4.2 build being detected in website server logs. Whether this is a completely new build of Android (Key Lime Pie) or a new version of Jelly Bean is an unknown right now. We first saw the report from Android Police, but what piqued our interest is when Android Authority talked about finding reports of a Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S running the software.

AA went on to say that “in our logs it’s the Xperia Arc S that showed up the most. In fact it was more frequent than the Nexus 7 or the Galaxy Nexus.” Engadget this morning has also this morning reported that it has seen several instances of an Xperia arc S running Android 4.2. However, they go on to say that “upon further investigation it seems more likely that this is a beta of Jelly Bean 4.1 currently being tested by Sony”. We’re not really sure why a Android 4.1 Jelly Bean beta would be flagged as Android 4.2, but as this data can be manipulated we need to be careful in assuming any of this as a fact.

If true though it shows there is a very good chance that Sony and Google are working much closer on future Android builds. This doesn’t automatically mean there is an Xperia Nexus in the works, even if it is, we imagine this is a future rather than current project. It hopefully does mean that the 2011 Xperia devices will be updated to Jelly Bean. We still await official word on this regard from Sony Mobile, but hopefully it will confirm one way or the other very soon.

Thanks adsada and Paul!

guess I can wait and buy Sony 2014 Flagship if they intend to put 4.2 in Arc S :)

All the LT18i entries in the logs I saw seemed to be fake and belong to an existing released version.

Excellent.. My plan to expose these idiot blogs that rely on rumour and other nonsense, rather than real news has worked a treat.

I have been using Opera Mobile with a faked User Agent string and using Anonymiser service to visit these blogs for the last 3 weeks, and I wondered how long it would take….

  • brano

pleaaaaaaaaaaaase jellybean for 2011 xperias pleaaaaaaase

  • XperiaBlog

Lo! Being serious for a second though, that’s precisely why we didn’t report on this story a few days back. It’s very easy to fake this data. Still there’s always a chance it could be true…

  • DJMashup

I agree with you and there is NO reason to not bring it to the 2011 line but I notice some inbred simpleton has actually voted your comment down for simply wanting JellyBean on your phone … This just proves that some people shouldn’t be allowed on a computer, it seems there are as many retarded mongs that peruse this blog aswell, I thought that kind of subhuman was limited to Apple blogs but I guess I was wrong !!

Im thinking on buying an Xperia T… ONLY if sony do update my Arc S to JellyBean, Im not going to buy another Sony phone cause I dont want another “left behind” phone…
My galaxy s2 will get Jelly Bean and is older than my arc s…

    Now, that’s a bummer.

  • ElderOfTheInternet

It’s a shame so much of internet news is not really news… It’s rumor, speculation or promotional campaigns.

Even the sites I trust are now falling foul of this (BBC, Reuters). Might just disconnect from the internet and live in a hole…

When the Xperia S will be updated to jelly beans please answer

  • paul4id

Had you ever thought about shutting up? Making comments like this only encourages Sony not to support their existing loyal customers.

  • boosook

    who should answer???

  • surethom

Just release Jelly Bean for the Xperia S & in the UK, Pleeeaaaasssseeee

  • lovebmw

the cool this that i see, is that every day there are many new names, XPERIABLOG is becoming more and more famous… and that’s super awesome.

  • Brapicoco

So many comments, violent reactions. it’s fun reading these reactions.. on the other hand these are just speculations, rumors that should be taken as a pinch of salt so don’t get frustrated over these matters, besides if this were true this would make Arc S users happy and hopefully other users of 2011 line because 2011 line has crappy ICS updates..

    2012 finally got Android 4.0

    Jelly Bean? LOL

  • ThilinaC

I guess you were not a sony user when they upgraded 2010 models :P

  • rgs001

    XB,
How exactly do you make the leap from an Xperia Arc S maybe running 4.2 then in the last paragraph state Sony and Google might be working on a Xperia Nexus. There is nothing in those site logs to support that idea. You just made it up out of the blue. Absolutely never going to happen, it’s like saying there will be a Samsung-Asus tablet. Perhaps a rewrite is in order.

Quite honestly I’d be plenty happy just knowing that Sony and Google are working close together. Lime, Jelly Bean, ICS.. All the same for me, what I really like is timely updates. If a device has no hardware that allows it the most recent version of android, well, so be it. However, keep bug fixes coming quickly.
Of course it’d be great to have 4.2 android (whatever version of android it will be) on my Arc, but for now I’d be happy enough with the .587 update that won’t come for me for my SIM Free Genereic .431 for some reason. >.>

  • Mehdi Solamannejad

If that’s the case for you, why don’t you get a Nexus-branded device ? You won’t get”another left behind” phone, unlikely !

  • Xlash Andraid

Vita… What? Ah, btw, this is a Xperia blog, Xperia devices run ANDROID. Is that clear? No go to post to a VitaOS forum.

  • domiboy7

i own a vita but uve just confused me lol, vita OS is not for phones

are you ThilinaC from XDA? you did a good job on pureness dude and porting walkman to 2011 xperias.. you rock dude

  • http://twitter.com/YourManAdrian Adrian Casillas

There are various articles on various sites stating that there are strong possibilities of Sony, LG (Which we already know is getting a Nexus device) and Motorola getting a Nexus device, so no, he did not make it up.

  • Mr. J

    Android 4.2? LOL
    That’s gonna be awesome

  • Rob

This is fake IMHO. The f/w version is 431 which is an ICS build. I think this is one of the many so-called “custom ROMs” created by a teenager with the Android version number tweaked. There are plenty of these on XDA. Why they choose to mess with the version number is a mystery but I guess they pretend to be on a later release to impress their friends.

  • apple spice cake

Just release JB (4.1 or 4.2) for the “Sony Xperia S” in the world (or Turkey-Turkiye).

i have xperia arc s. and i think my phone deserves jelly bean. because ics doesnt work stable.

  • JB 4 Xperia ARC S

ARC S owners must have their JB, its a very good smartphone.
Follow us on twitter “JB 4 Sony Arc S” so we fight together.
    Thx all

  • JB 4 Xperia ARC S

I think that Sony didn’t upgrade their 2011’s line to JB because of commercial issues not technical ones.
Personnaly this frustrates me a lot, this is a kind of non respect of the consumer.

  • Bob

Isnt their SW version of ICS 4.1.something something? 4.2 would make sense for JB (4.1) then.

  • payal

    i want

  • Lammer

YES if you have any information about 4.2 for Arc S please Report me :D

  • maikol
