Sony unveils Xperia Tablet Z: 10.1-inch quad-core super-thin water-resistant tablet

Sony Mobile Japan has announced the Xperia Tablet Z this morning and it looks to be a well-rounded package. First off, it is one of the thinnest and lightest 10.1-inch tablets on the market, coming in at just 6.9mm in thickness and weighing 495g. This makes it even thinner than the iPad mini. What’s even more amazing is that the tablet manages to pack in both water and dust resistance at this size.

In terms of hardware, the Xperia Tablet Z runs on a 1.5GHz quad-core processor (expected to be the APQ8064 Snapdragon with Adreno 320 graphics) and comes with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box. The 10.1-inch tablet has a 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA) resolution Reality display with 16:10 aspect ratio. The tablet also features Mobile Bravia Engine 2 as seen in its new Xperia smartphones.

Other features include a back-illuminated 8.1MP Exmor R camera, S-FORCE Front Surround 3D (surround sound), NFC and LTE. Whilst not explicitly listed in the press release, we expect the tablet to have 32GB of storage, 2GB of RAM, a microSD memory card slot, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 6000mAh battery.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is expected to launch in Japan this Spring in both white and black colours. We expect the tablet to be carried by NTT DoCoMo when it announces its Spring showcase tomorrow.

Of course, after months of waiting, I finally got my Xperia Tablet S last week, and now this. I love my new tablet, but the Xperia Tablet Z looks amazing, and exactly what Sony needs to do to cement it’s place in the premium Android device market. Why chase Samsung when Sony can once again become a brand synonymous with premium devices. Sure, we Sony faithful may have to pay a little more than the typical Samsung consumer, but that hasn’t hurt Apple’s bottom line.

What tablet is that running on? Is that the official Tablet Z launcher?

  • Norio24

OMG ! now i have a new dream ,i’m getting it for sure :-D

  • i like it but i hope i could afford it.

  • Perfect! Being waterproof means I can carry it in any bag without worrying about the weather. It’s immensely beautiful and sleek and with NFC it’s going to be superb along with the Xperia Z.

  • AsadMulla

still got IR for remote controls.
Looks amazing. even though they have taken out the magazine wedge.

  • KinG

will this tablet come to malaysia?

  • looks like a monster smartphone, design is nothing special, specs neither. What I don’t get is this: Sony is announcing a 5″ smartphone with ridiculous 1080p resolution, BUT this 10,1″ tablet just gets a 1200p display?! Why not a 2560×1600 one, like the Nexus 10? And what about that battery, just 6000mAh. Heck, the extended battery for the Note has a capacity of 5200mAh. And since we’re talking about Sony this device will have a premium price, which not so many people will be willing to pay considering the better speced competitive tablets.

  • PowerSonic

that video links to this in the description.

  • Yes yes yes

  • paul4id

Remember that those mAh comparisons also depend on the voltage being the same to make a like for like comparison. (no idea if voltage is different or not) You really need to compare in Wh.

  • Lukus

Its running on my old Asus transformer.

  • Lunkz

    I came

Disappointed to see they’ve dropped the folded design, I thought that nicely distinguished them against a field of bland rectangular blocks. Glad I grabbed myself the current model when I did. I’ve been really, really happy with it, and the range of accessories available for it is great.

I do hope it’s still the plan to bring Jelly Bean over to it though.

  • Coollead

    …4.1 is Jelly Bean.

  • Coollead

It’s going to be $50~200 on a contract. They will more than likely not sell a Wifi version of this, not in Japan.

  • OneManLaptop

Sorry, I was talking about the previous model. I hope it’s still the plan to upgrade the Xperia Tablet S with 4.1 Jellybean.

  • Coollead

My bad! I read that wrong!

  • James Earley

I’ve waited so long for a 1080p tablet from Sony! Wonder when it’s coming to the UK.

  • reptile64

Damn! I have to sell my Xperia tablet now!

  • Oh no !!! I juz brought my xperia tablet s~

  • surethom

Looks like there is also a front facing camera, I have brightened the above picture & it shows a circle that looks like a front facing camera in the top middle.??

  • Fabio Krauss Stabel

  • XperiaBlog

    Another punch by Sony. Nice!

  • Yeah, but I think this design benefits from its uniform thickness. One can easily use it in any orientation.

  • I believe google made it mandatory, but maybe everything from version 4.2 though. I can’t see how it won’t have it seens its one of their highlighted features for the Z phone.

  • Tel.

The worst point is android UI/UX, It is not good for tablets at all.

  • TjaldidTjaldid

    I… blew it

  • I don;t get it

  • JaroB
  • Nabil

And applications on Android aren’t optimized for tablets (most of them).

  • Ashua

Windows is lame especially the app store!

  • Jakobdz

    I o_O

  • The only thing this is lacking is an optional keyboard dock.

The NTT Docomo press conference over the past couple hours was everything one expected it to be. No real surprises although they did show the interactions between the Xperia Z and the Xperia Tablet Z.

It’s good that the Xperia line-up is finally getting more marketing attention from the Docomo; It’s been a while since Docomo really gave it enough attention over other product lines.

Also, pre-orders for Xperia Z start tomorrow; Undoubtedbly some people will line up to get their pre-orders and shops will have an extremely limited number of pre-orders to offer. (Same as when I got my Xperia GX). Xperia Z is expected to be launched on February 9th (which is a much longer than typical pre-order period).

  • I owned

  • Sony Mobile NL says it will be selling in Japan only for now and will be sold from Spring in black and white!

  • Avery Navas

this very same thought came to my mind… sad I can’t afford it…

  • Jorge Rodrigues Dias

Will this have a ridiculously small battery like the Xperia Z? And don’t give me any of that “stamina mode” crap. There’s a dozen free apps that do the same thing: switch off stuff you should be able to use at all times. The stupidly small batteries in sony’s devices is one of the reasons me and a lot more people won’t buy them. Pathetic.

The only thing about the design that I’m unsure of is that it now looks as if they’ve gone for a completely flat design on the back and the unique bezel has gone. Unless you’ve held the now old Tablet S or Xperia Tablet S in your hand you cannot know just how comfortable it feels and holding anything else just doesn’t feel as safe.

As for the screen resolution, well sure it would be great if this at least matched the Retina display or the Nexus 10 as their phone has the same resolution and that will make an interesting side by side comparison when they can be tested together.

Anyway, as with anything that Sony does they do take their time and ultimately they will be there or there abouts in regards to the competition.
