Xperia Z Ultra versus Xperia Z: Response times compared [Video]

by XB on 2nd July 2013

in Videos, Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, Xperia Z Ultra

Z versus Z UltraWant to know how the Xperia Z Ultra’s Snapdragon 800 chipset compares against the Xperia Z’s Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064? Well the response times of both handsets are compared in the video below across various tasks.

There is no doubt the Xperia Z Ultra has the edge here, but it’s also worth remembering it sports a higher quad-core clock speed of 2.2GHz against the 1.5GHz speed of the Xperia Z. Check out the full video below.

Thanks @musumappa!

Both are equally fast apart from the camera… I don’t mind if my device is 1 ms slower… Not gonna make any difference. How much speed in Android is enough for you is the question. :P

  • MrWest

This comparison show nothing. Yeah it was 1 ms. faster with the camera, but that doesn’t make any difference to me.

  • A faster CPU does things slightly faster than a slower CPU. Stop the presses!

On that note, I am dying for an S800 device. When you pack your device full of 200+ apps and it inevitably slows down, every millisecond counts.

  • kakooli

Apparently the z isnt running 4.2.2, which is much smoother and faster than 4.1. Believe me I never seen my Z lag or crash while running 4.2.2 but I would love to see some gaming and 4K recording on the snapdragon 800. Speaking of which, does the Z Ultra support 4k recording?

  • Asa

The Xperia Z is really holding it’s own against The Beast (sorry, had to).

Too bad I never was able to get an Xperia Z.
Guess I’ll get either the Z Ultra or the Honami in H2 :).

Xperia Z Ultra’s black levels look thousand times better than Z .

  • Amsakanna

That’s what I was about to say.

  • AMG38

Definitely not worth for a cpu upgrade.. You wont feel the difference. That’s like upgrading your graphics card for getting ~2fps more. The only things whic matter are fast charging and energy management.
Beside this, Z Ultra is very awesome, but too big for a Smartphone. It isn’t a Smartphone any more, neither a tablet. It is definitely, unlike Sony, a PHABLET.

I will definitely buy if sony bring CamScanner App to XZ Ultra.

I also noticed the blue on facebook app. It really looks better.

  • InspectorGadget80

Like too see this go up against the NOTE II

  • Muhammad Zohaib Rizwani

    Omg you read xperiablog! :D

  • Herman

And I thought those display technology names were just for marketing.
    I was wrong.

  • Herman

Take the Honami for its camera and portability.
Take the Xperia Z Ultra for productivity and web browsing.

Or take ’em both because you can’t decide :)

  • Sure, why not?

  • Cristi13

Yes it is not a groundbreaking difference in speed but newer processors support newer tech, like 4k video and 1080 at 60fps and other things we problably don’t know of it (yet).

  • Cristi13

One thing I want to know, know that sony has a phone with good viewing angles, people are gonna complain about privacy. I’m not hating or anything, i’m just courious to see.

  • karamelakimo

    yup

  • rgsdg

agree. that’s why people who don’t understand tech and are just plain users should just shut up.

  • siber storm

That’s more of an indictment of the Xperia Z than it is a showcase of the ZU. The difference between the S4 Pro and the 800 shouldn’t be that dramatic. They are part of the same family of processors. The ZU is running prototype software as well. Many reviewers have commented how laggy and slow the Xperia Z is and how it performs more like a dual-core processor and is even slower than last gen phones like the Galaxy S3 and HTC One X. I guess it can be praised that Sony has finally learned to optimize their software.

  • Timothy

because ZU is not with TN anymore
    =]

  • HardyHarHar

It needs to be faster than your mind lol! On which you’re still thinking what to press then the device already triggers the action :p

  • DrazenDodig

everything you wrote is factually wrong… good work!

  • Tons

Where you from dude ? I havent receive my 4.2 pdate yet..
    Im from Indonesia

  • Why is the Z Ultra using the old launcher?

  • fung

    Oh wait
The app launching animation is quite similar to iOS7.
    Did Apple stole Sony’s idea?

  • Tridos

either you don’t know what you are writing or paid by Samsung

  • T.W.G

There’s only one interesting thing in this video:

It shows that the Ultra has a notification Led and that’s great after they left out the Led flash for the camera.

  • Killian Khoo

iOS are based on Sony idea at 1st..
    So it is ntg….

  • RoRoXZ

Agree, colors overall look fantastic. Triluminos? Wow!

  • Umar Khan

you got that right 4.2.2 is freakingly fast. All i can say is DAMN

  • m sacha

david ruddock is a fuckface…just saying

  • kakooli

Look, when u install pc. Companion, choose spain as ur place of location cuz they always get them first. Uninstall pc companion, redownload it then choose spain. Hope this helps

  • Martin Ambre

one of my friends Xperia Z shows black spots on camera
its not even 3months that he purchased it
    sad fone

    i love my acro S

  • Hasnain Maec Abbas

damn being a sony fan cant make up my mind…should i upgrade from my current xperia z to Z ultra or wait for honami?

  • Muhammad Zohaib Rizwani

I just didn’t expect it. I mean cause mostly ap staff isn’t impressed with sony don’t blame them for that actually :P

  • Pradeep Viswanathan R

LOL!!!! It does not work that way

  • Hasnain Maec Abbas

can you point out a review where some1 says Xperia Z preforms as a dual core? i upgraded from a s3 and xperia Z is totally in a diff league from s3.. S4 pro in xperia Z owns in benchmarks vs other s4 pro powered phones .. i have xperia z with 64 gb sd card out of which only 9gb is free.. and my phone is still snappier than the 16gb galaxy s3 i had before this…. also u should know that xperia T (with dual core s4) was faster in daily usage vs htc one X…

  • kakooli

It worked for me that way

  • Guest

Snapdragon S4 Pro also can handle 1080p at 60fps, just look at Asus padfone 2.

  • AMG38

you are just a fool who doesnt know anything about my tech knowledge

  • AMG38

    not 1080p, only 720p @ 60fps

    Stop writing false comment.

Z is smooth, not as whatever you said. S III smoothness and speed is no way near Z.

  • xperiaz

first you ask yourself what’s the thing you need, is it an oversized phone that most probably can’t fit into your pocket, or a great phone which can be your daily driver.

  • Cristi13

    It records 1080p at 30fps and 720p at 60fps http://m.gsmarena.com/asus_padfone_2-5017.php

  • I think they’re turning things around nicely. I really like the Ultra, for example.

Only thing is their U.S. distribution strategy and timing still sucks. I’m not sure we’ll see those any time soon here.

  • AP confirmed.

  • Muhammad Zohaib Rizwani

lol the timing yeah I know what you mean its like a lifetime ago when they announce a phone and when they actually bring it to market.
Regarding the US strategy I think selling them unlocked is the way to go okay sure not everyone can get an unsubsidized phone but with carriers you lose the freedom Sony gives I mean unlocking the bootloader and quick updates etc

Btw since I have your attention for the time being You guys have the best android site ever. Love it, keep it up :D

  • shanefalco

sony non sa ottimizzare il software…troppa poca differenza tra z e ultra. Il display invece finalmente è migliorato. Spero nel 2014 abbandonino l’lcd tn e usino solo triluminos che è una via di mezzo tra lcd e amoled.

  • shanefalco

sony optimize the software does not know … too little difference between z and ultra. The display instead has finally improved. I hope in 2014 to abandon the lcd tn and use only Triluminos which is a cross between lcd and amoled.

  • Consious

Keep your Z and give your money to the poor.

  • Gregorian

Give your Z to the poor.

  • nidou bossy

Seriously guys.. I paused the video at 0:17 and i can see how the Z Ultra is a damn sharper and clearer than the Z

The display itself is almost spoke it out: I’m a damn Ultra Sharp in a damn Ultra slim piece of ART.

  • uidesigner_sony

Try to flash X-Reality on Z(if u have it) that was ported from Sony Xperia i1, then compare

  • Sarmast

A high end and costly phablet but without an LED Flash for rear camera, such a disappointment, now dont forget to carry an external light even after paying such a huge money while you are outdoors with friends at a beach, in jungle or farm house to take quality pictures at night :D

  • Demetrius

The Xperia Z in the video is on Android 4.1 and the ZU is on 4.2.

  • lolzer

Did you know that S4(XZ) CANNOT power down each core independently while S600 and S800(XZU) can? S600 and S800 can run on 1,2,3 or 4 cores just like Tegra 3 & 4, since they’re using the SMP tech.

  • Muda ssir

Does this Xperia z ultra have a flash light

  • shibanian

  • Gregg Lowden

Sony “fans” have had to suffer the bad viewing angles for so long that “justification” of the shortcomings crept into the lexicon. Coming from HTC, Samsung to Sony ZL I’m dismayed how bad it is, privacy is lame excuse. Don’t put stuff you don’t want seen in public. Looking forward to Honami with this tech! Can start sharing content with others again!

  • shanefalco

Ultra not have a flash light.

  • Hasnain Maec Abbas

haha i guess i read your reply too late :P as i already sold xperia Z and got ultra last week :D
