sw2-gallery-02Those of you waiting to get hands-on with Sony’s recently announced SmartWatch 2 (SW2), won’t have too long to wait. UK retailers Clove and Handtec are both pegging the SmartWatch 2 for release during the week commencing 15 July with a price point around the £120 mark.

The Sony SmartWatch 2 has a 1.6 inch (220 x 176 pixel) display, NFC for easy pairing, IP57 water resistance and a customised Android UI. Sony also allows the SmartWatch to be personalised with any standard 24mm wristband.

The third generation of Sony´s smartwatchs. I bet Apple with his iWatch will say “we are the first and the best” hahaha

  • dark_skeleton

    Ugh… pricey

  • Uchiha Dare Nial

Smartwatch 3 – Three inch display, specs almost same with Xperia mini pro, surely will explode the market

  • lovebmw

    poinltess without GPS

  • Guest

    Not paying that price,rip off

  • Marco

big fan of sony, but this watch is better.

  • Swatch

I don’t think the SmartWatch 2 to be IP57. It is sad in the official page : “Although SmartWatch 2 is splash resistant, it shouldnot be exposed to very wet conditions or be immersed in water.”

  • Swatch

    *I don’t think the sw2 IS IP57.

  • Gaston

    Waiting for the iWatch.

  • BEN10

Wake up man! We want the real cool wearable computer and the Sony SmartWatch 2 is not good enough to change the game.

  • BluDragon

Hey guys I heard that the OS is in Smartwatch 2 isn’t Android… really?

  • DrazenDodig

    why would you want that?

  • InspectorGadget80

U will be donating your lung for that expensive crappy watch.

  • ur dude

Exactly! iWatch is 10 times better than Smartwatch 2.

  • Izamanaick

Except for the fact that it doesn’t exist.

  • Herman

Not quite, if you compare it to other watches that sometimes really only tell the time.
You get what you pay for with this, and that’s great. My next watch would definitely be some kind of smartwatch, perhaps even this one. Just because it can be used as so much more than just a watch.

  • Herman

It’s weird though, because it’s listed as such.
Someone else replied to me on a different tech site (where I had the same question) that it might be that the watch itself won’t break, except that you might need to replace the battery.

It’s definitely interesting. I’m really hoping it’s water resistant as the specs say. Every watch should be water resistant, what if you accidentally grab something out of the water without thinking about your watch?
It happens to the best of us, really.

  • Nick

was expecting more ,wanted to buy but iam Not gonna ,they did the half of the job as usual

  • Carlo

Then do it yourself if you’re so good. wow, a wearable computer? pffft.

  • JEp ?

Can trade in with my old SmartWatch?

  • NeverEnding

I’m preety open minded. So being 10x better it’d better have 10x more features than what sony’s smart watch 2 currently has. Name them and i’ll believe you ;)

  • Angel Morales

im going to buy 2 one for me and my lil bro! can’t wait!

  • Uchiha Dare Nial

    It is android ui theme

  • bigshynepo

By the time this product actually reaches backers, and retail stores (if ever), the big players like Sony, Samsung, Apple and Google will have wearable tech that trumps this indy project in everyway. Remember…despite their claims of a Nov 2013 ship date, Kickstarter to Reality takes ~ 1 Year. They even admit in their updates that actual retail shipments definitely won’t begin until 2014.

  • Frode P. Bergsager

It has passed the test for IP57 as new, but Sony probably doesn’t trust the unit to be waterproof during the whole life. It is difficult to make a waterproof Micro USB-connector without adding too much bulk.

i read up on it and i was interested untill i found out it’s lcd and not waterproof :(

lcd will look terrible with a normal clock layout oled would be so much better for the black levels and it being a few meters waterproof would be amazing

    1-2 weeks moderateuse battery life

  • Herman

    But but but…
It doesn’t look as great as Sony’s!

If I’m going to get the Honami, I will get this one over anything else.

  • Herman

Is this a hypothesis, or is this actually stated somewhere?
Because this could easily be true, though I’d like to be certain.

  • Frode P. Bergsager

This is only my hypothesis based on real world experience.
If it was true I doubt Sony would confirm it.

I have been using my old splash proof Smartwatch a couple of times unprotected in light rain, but I try to dry it afterward.

  • Herman

    Thanks for the reply :)

I’ve wanted the original Smartwatch as well, until I heard it wasn’t completely waterproof.

It sounds like this one is, though. As long as it’s not constantly under water. That’s what you were implying as well, right?

  • Frode P. Bergsager

Even if the old smartwatch is splash proof it is impossible to operate it with raindrops on the display, you have to wipe it dry first.

After I read the documentation for Casio watches I now know that 50m waterproof watches are showerproof, but not for swimming. 100m watches can be used for swimming if no nuttons are presssed. 200m and 300m watches can be used while diving and you are allowed to press the buttons under water.

    I also forund this explanation:

The new Smartwatch looks to be twice the price of the old one, I have to make up my mind if I shuld wait for a price drop or buy it as soon as it arrives.

  • Herman

If you still have the old one, I’d wait.

Try to use your old one as much as you can, and when you find out you’re missing something the new one does, that could be the time to upgrade.

  • Swatch

OK I asked Sony France on twitter, they told me that the test has been made late, so they didn’t have all specification when writing the SW2 page on the website.

    It IS waterproof (IP57).
