Xperia Z Ultra sized up against the Nexus 7 (2013)

in Xperia Z Ultra

XZU v N7_3The latest Nexus 7 has won wide praise after recently being announced by Google and Asus. The 7-inch tablet improves the old version by having better resolution (1200 x 1920 versus 800 x 1280), faster chipset (1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon versus 1.2GHz quad-core Tegra 3), more RAM (2GB versus 1GB) and the addition of a rear-facing camera.

Sony’s new phablet, the 6.4-inch Xperia Z Ultra, sits very closely to tablet territory and if you’re wondering how the two devices compare when sized up together then check out the pictures below. The Xperia Z Ultra has a nicer design in our view, however the Nexus 7 rear casing has a better grip making it easier to hold according to RingHK. The Nexus 7 apparently also has slightly better viewing angles and of course, a much cheaper price. Check out the pictures below.

    Both too big for me.

  • Babylonbwoy

I can die now that I know that a 6.4 inch phablet is smaller than a 7 inch one.

this is best looking phone ever and proudly made by sony .
but size is so big for me

  • Herman

The point of the comparison is not to show you that one is smaller than the other.
It’s that the Z Ultra is really almost as big as the Nexus 7.

Owning a Nexus 7 this is the first time I’m actually getting the feel of how big the Z Ultra would be in my hands.

  • Utsav Shah

    Feeling so proud!

As it is confirmed that Sony has started putting some brilliant displays!
The next thing to improve is the camera!

    Go SONY Go!!!!!!!!!

everybody come here vote for Xperia Z please

there is a gray box at the end of comparison which has three circles. choose the second one and then “??? ???” or “vote” under the circles.
    everybody vote pleaaaaaase

  • DrazenDodig

Almost as big but significantly smaller if you look at the pocket pic… i like it. Also looks a lot more premium

  • Babylonbwoy

    Don’t why I did vote but I did ;)

  • E>D

    thank you
i wish everybody comes and vote as well because Z is behind
please tell whoever you know to come and vote. only one day is remained.

  • Babylonbwoy

I’m not really into all that stuff of unboxing videos, benchmarks and comparisons with windows mobile, planes, fridges and cars. I find that useless. I know it’s a standard in tech site but if you remove all these reviews from most of tech site it would remain almost nothing! (I’m not talking about this blog).
I check the overall design, important specs like soc, gpu, ram and internal storage/SD.
Maybe I’m not really interested because I know that I won’t get it.

Or use automated translations ! ;)
    That’s what I did!

  • E>D

i didnt know there is such a choice as well
anyway, thank you alot. if you can advertise for it thats perfect because the difference between two phones is very low. with less than a hundred votes Z can win easily :D

People should look at the Xperia Z Ultra as a tablet more than a phablet. If you look closely, you can see that the screen size is ALMOST the same, if it weren’t for the Nexus 7’s huge bezels. Including the Trilluminos screen, the Snapdragon 800 and the waterproof rating (and excluding Sony’s premier price), this is a serious contender for a high-end tablet. Its definitely more compact AND you can pick up calls albeit looking like a doofus (But I had a Nokia N-Gage and you can never look dumber picking up a call than that. Do some research on it if you guys are unsure). If you can get this in your head, you can definitely excuse Sony for not including a flash. I wanted the Nexus 7 but after looking at this, it definitely gave me a second thought.

“Slightly” better viewing angles is an understatement. The Nexus 7 actually uses an IPS display. The Z Ultra is still continuing Sony’s trend of craptastic displays. Shamed yet again by a budget device that’s 3-4x cheaper. You could even get the LTE version of the Nexus 7, use Skype, and turn it into a phone. It’s not like you’ll be making many calls with the ZU anyway. The size difference is negligible. They both fall under small tablet territory and cannot be pocketed normally. Might as well save a TON of money by getting the Nexus 7, get a much better and bigger screen, much more ergonomic and grippy device, and know you will always be at the forefront of updates.

Bigger than Z yet smaller than Nexus 2 but hotter than both!

I thought Xperia z ultra is Quad Core 2.2GHz

  • Billy de Fretes

the only advantages of nexus 7 is updates.. the rest is crap

  • Anzilleo Kristello Mozihim

The viewing angles of the ZU has been improved, I know because I’ve held it before and the display id absolutely stunning.

  • It is. The specs mentioned in this article are those of the old and the new nexus 7.

  • Imp

Too big, but damn that does look good. Puts the Bezel 7 to shame

  • O_O and I was about to purchase the current Tablet Z.. is this real?

Is triluminos display a type of display panel, you know like ips or super lcd or just a software??

  • Andrew Tan

If you never seen or touch before, don’t predict it is bad, they is no longer any viewing angle issue, and the screen just produce the color as stunning or even better than HTC One.

In actual, it is much better than what you seen here in below photo taken. The screen panel is extreme awesome this time.

  • Amimanot
  • testor

ordinary viewers are unlikely to understand the difference triluminos brings. if they see those photos, they’d likely think htc one is better because of the higher contrast. what triluminos does is to show more colors so there doesn’t appear to be that much contrast or abrupt shifting between similar colors. still, not many will understand that since they’re used to punchy colors and higher contrasts. you should show comparisons of photos, not color palettes or whatchamacallit

That HTC One is at shop, they don’t have much photo inside, so I just show whatever HTC One provide.

Constract different was due to snapping issue, anyone can go and test out itself then will know.

I find both vividness is identical, contrast wise shall be same, I do push to 100% brightness during snap (as HTC One in shop is 100%) but I forgot untick adapt to lighting conditions, thus you see Xperia Z Ultra here seems much lower brightness than HTC One.

  • Carljn

Already ordered the nexus 7 (2). I’ve been eagerly waiting for the Z Ultra to be released in my country, but now I’m not so sure. They are quite close to each other size wise. Maybe I’ll wait for Honami.

Gonna buy Nexus 7…. Xperia Z Ultra is damn to expensive for me!

  • Anzilleo Kristello Mozihim

And I bet the Nexus 7 that’ll land in countries that does not have Google Play store is more expensive than the Z Ultra.

  • Pingback: Vergleich: Nexus 7 (2013) vs. Sony Xperia Z Ultra()

  • Significantly smaller because of the large bezel differences.

  • shanefalco

Nexus 7 is better than ultra and the price is honest!

  • Tyler

I don’t understand the comparison xperia z ultra is a phablet & nexus 7 is just a tablet, if Nexus 7 Asus is a phablet I will definitely go for it regardless of the size.
please compare Xperia z ultra to Samsung Note 3

He got it from a 90’s bargain!

  • bustedemotions96

not really… nexus 7 is around $300 and Z Ultra is more than double!

  • Billy de Fretes

price my as* .. all nexus products are expensive in my country. for the same price tag, z ultra is the best option

  • Billy de Fretes

    for it size genius

  • Billy de Fretes

that’s because your country subisidized by google. so the price remain $300 . in indonesia it will be around $600-$700 and the price will have small margin with z ultra. so z ultra is the best option

  • carlisimo

At 4x the cost (or thereabouts), it’d better look more premium!

  • nidou bossy

moving from Xperia S to Xperia Z Ultra , is like moving from an F1 vehicle to a Van in a term of size, but It’s still so freaking HOT to hold in hands, and it would never feel so big!

i’ve held the nexus 7 (1st gen) so many times in my hands, and its so comfy to catch very well and put near ur ear as you’re making a call! so now i can back again and say Z Ultra is small compare it to Nexus 7.

  • nidou bossy

it looks like this jeans was manufactured to carry a Phablet/Tablet!
