Honami Sample ThumbThe first picture sample from Sony’s upcoming ‘Honami’ flagship has appeared on Picasa. The raw sample from the HSPA+ version of the handset (C6902) is not available to download from the site, however the EXIF data confirms a number of rumoured specs.

The photo captured has a resolution of 5248 x 3936 pixels, or 20.66MP altogether (rumours pointed to a 20.7MP camera sensor). The photo has a 4:3 aspect ratio and f/2.0 aperture. The firmware running on the device was 14.1.G.1.443_9_b600.

The picture was taken by a gentleman named Taylor Li, who is a Sr. Manager at Sony Ericsson Taiwan, judging by his out of date Linkedin profile. Therefore it looks like this is the real deal, rather than being faked. We look forward to more details as we approach the official launch of Honami on 4 September at IFA in Berlin.

f/2.0 aperture… all i can say is yummy!
Honami is shaping up to be everything XZ kinda fell short of

  • DrKrFfXx

    I want this *drool*

  • Izamanaick

Hope it has a big sensor and Xenon flash. I’ll most likely still get it even if it doesn’t.

I am very, very impressed. Excellent amount of detail. This matches the Nokia 1020 very closely and will be a winner! Judging from the EXIF data it’ll have some excellent low-light performance too.

  • Tangent Lin

Zoom in and you will see the “lap/reset” word clearly.

  • bigshynepo

Color me stoked for this phone! Finally a reason for me to replace the old X10.
I hope the internals match the camera when it comes to setting a new standard.

4.8MB hmmm…… pretty huge, but less compression.

  • Faisal Armand

4.8MB is about the size of the average image captured by samsung galaxy s4 on 13MP resolution.

Maybe compression is not a thing to blame for image quality after all..

  • Trung

Good job Sony, try harder to beat Nokia pureview

  • xperiafan324

Honestly, the “ULTRAPIXEL” ideology is only good for scenic pictures (you know, landscape, people etc.), but not so much for finer detail like text (for which the Megapixels do matter quite abit), it’s a double-edged sword.

I’d rather Sony improve their cameras the traditional way. Ultrapixels aren’t necessary if you can ensure greater per-pixel detail even with smaller pixels. Look at the Lumia 1020, its pixels are even smaller than those of the Z, GS IV, even Honami, yet it can still produce some surprisingly high amount of per-pixel detail.

f / 2.0 ? i thought it will use f /1.6, this will be close match between 1020 and honami. to be honest lumia 1020 is the perfect smartphone camera… but i still want to replace my xperia z to honami :)

If it has a small sensor as in the pictures that got leaked, we’re looking at another disappointment. Seriously Sony how long do you think your fans will endure your crap?

  • mclarenfan1968

Depends on the algorithm that does the compression. There are loss-less and lossy compression. The same logarithm can give various levels of results for different pictures. Its all down to whats in the scene to get the maximal or minimal effect on a particular type of compression.

In lossy you can have varying levels of quality too while reducing the file size. So compression can ruin quality if done abusively.

Its hard to judge these things from the outsidea as a user becuase we need to consider the lens quality, sensor size, pixel density, apeterure, compression software etc. No one component can be the sure shot reason when we dont know all the details.

Apple usually uses the same camera sensor as most sonys but produces better quality, Sony is bad at the software side, hope this is not the same here.

Me too. Sadly I spend most of my day time working. So the only time I get to go out and have fun is at night. Low light photography matters alot to me.

  • Anukul

    u are not funny !

  • Small Memory

20MP is a tad bit too much IMHO. Unless it uses the same technology as pureview which oversamples the images into something great. Else the 12MP of my XS is more than enough…
Plus with that sensor size we’d do good with lesser MP for noise performance =)

  • Market Troll

But Megapixles are GOOD for marketing!!

  • Fool

No I don’t you fool! Too much B0KEH~!!

  • Seafood

    At some point,
I feel bored with news about honami.

  • Rob

Rumors, not news.. News is when they actually announce it, now it’s just gossip

  • Faisal Armand

Also i’m curious about the capabilities of BIONZ image processing and Cyber shot G lens because an optimalized image processing algorithm and simple lens alone can produce brilliant image.

Oh yeah I just did a camera comparison shoot out between Samsung Galaxy S4 (default firmware) and My Xperia Z (jelly bean 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.0.244) as we all know, Xperia Z received numerous camera improvements over firmware updates.. But still, it was an easy victory for samsung galaxy s4, it defeated xperia z in every aspect such as resolved detail, noise levels, colour reproduction, white balance, night shots, exposure, focusing and contrast.

In short, image captured by samsung galaxy s4 makes the images captured by xperia z look cheap and lousy.

As a Xperia Z owner, this camera comparison made me sad :'( hopefully, SONY really improves imaging quality in the next firmware update.

  • lovebmw

    8 mp iphone is like 5 – 6 mb i think

  • Emanuele Ciotti

It says here that will have a focal length of opening (f/2.0) so it will have a large sensor? (sorry I’m no expert), and then what is the focal opening of htc one?

  • imran_khan

Sony always excels in camera technology. I am enjoying great picture results of XPERIA Z. No match of Sony in camera and product design in worldwide market. Go ahead Sony and rock the performance.

  • Faisal Armand

Saying Sony has bad camera software might be a little bit irrelevant if you ask me (no offense there), I think sony’s camera performance went down throughout the years.

Back then when sony produced cybershot phones, their camera performances was excellent, making sony mobile phones famous because of camera performance

Pre Xperia phones such as Vivaz, Hazel, and Satio also had very good camera performance as well

    Xperia X2, X10, Arc/Arc S were more than capable 8MP shooters

Xperia S and Acro S were at least able to beat nokia n8 in some areas (don’t know why some reviewers criticized their camera performance though) but the image quality from 5MP shooters such as Xperia U, and Sola have notably degraded

Don’t know much about the camera performance of Xperia T and V.. But it was reported that they were very good

Now I don’t know what the hell is going on in 2013 with sony’s camera software. The camera of Xperia Z doesn’t have the quality of 13MP cameras and The Xperia SP is one of the worst 8MP shooters ever

excellent details, looks like we have a winner. only one minor nitpick being sony needs to get their software in order, when you zoom 100% you see the typical “sony pixels”. they are almost there, they need to pay a bit more attention!
