Sony Xperia Z1 photo samples through different firmware revisions

Xperia Z1 sample_9The Sony Xperia Z1 is an imaging power house. It is the first Sony Xperia phone incorporating a 1/2.3-inch 20.7MP CMOS chip, the first with G Lens (27mm wide angle and bright F2.0 aperture) and the first with the BIONZ for mobile image processing engine. The phone includes a number of new dedicated camera applications and Sony even plans to include an API allowing developers make their camera app part of the Xperia Z1 camera app.

Okay there will be some that wanted more, whether that be the inclusion of a xenon flash, OIS (optical image stabilisation) or 4K recording, but there’s no denying that the Z1 showcases a very important first step in utilising technology across the Sony umbrella – particularly on the imaging front. We pulled together some photo samples of the Xperia Z1 from early firmware, right up to the latest firmware build (14.1.G.1.518) currently certified on the PTCRB. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

    Here we go !

    Go Sony !

  • k3nzaki2004

nice shot and detail, hope with some little tweak could boost performance

  • schattenkonig58

    Amazing Quality !

  • surethom

Very nice, but this does not show us much as Almost every camera phone can take good pictures outdoors in the day time, its Indoor & Night time phones that really show how good or bad a camera phones is.

I will reserve judgment until I see dull indoor & night time photo samples.

  • rey

it would be nicer if there are some low light sample pics :D

  • k3nzaki2004

and some sample of capturing alphabet from distance. (hope a lot better from Xperia Z,… which cannot produce good picture of alphabet in indoor with distance only less than 2 meters – MS office scale : about 28)

  • Mike Gonzalez

    wow! Sony… i must confess… this time i’m impressed!!

  • Asad Ahmed

    simply wow :D

  • Zaka

    Lookin’ good indeed.

  • Rizky Maulana

    dafuQ did i just see…
    wow awesome !!!!!

  • surethom

Agree, but indoor & night time photo samples are the real test, hope we get some samples before the phone is released.

  • John Andrew Santiago

    Impressive! O_O

  • Akshay Kawale

Shutup And Take My Money So Awsome Pics And Clearity

  • jangaleon

    Wow. Like wow 0_0
    that is pretty impressive.

  • Lucian

Impressing results, but I still want to see full 20.7MP photo without any compression, low-light and 3xzoom quality.

  • Faisal Armand

For those of you that wants low light pics :)

  • UrDad

    SG4, wtf???

  • http://about.me/ankitwasnik Ankit Wasnik

    Impressive :)

  • surethom

Cheers, & WoW very very nice low light. Not a lover of Massive 5″ screen phones, but this may well be my next phone unless some other Android phone with a screen size smaller than 5″ & same fantastic low light cmaera comes out before christmas.

    Cheers once again.

  • surethom

Are these from a Sony website or independent website??? the Lumia & HTC seem very dark.

    Can you post a link?

  • marongiu28

    OMFG

  • Cristi13

For a 20mp camera, i’m not impressed (their marketing hype is overblown). They should have remained at 13mp, it would had more advantage. Don’t get me wrong, is still very good, but i expected more.

  • Faisal Armand

These are from sony website, but the camera comparison was done by an independent research corporation. So the results should be pretty much unbiased

    http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/legal/testresults/xperia-z1/#camera-overall

  • surethom

I think the 16:9 photos (the best format imo) are around 9mp if I am correct.

  • Micro

Umm.. for a 20Mp camera? You mean what, compared to what..? The full sized sensors? Or maybe the same size one with comparable resolution..? Any? Please mate, stop kidding… ;)

  • Micro

SG4 R.I.P. dafaq xD which doesn’t surprise me at all..
but Lumia 1020? wtf….? This certainly is interesting O_O

  • torgrim

    Hehe, sure…

  • slblack

    Garbage

  • Soj Varghese

    Fantastic

  • Abdullah Robben

The resolution is set at 8 MP

  • Eagle

Yassss Sony! teach ‘em a lesson. Cheer!

  • miki69

    14.1.G.1.510 – looks amazing!

  • Micro

    Dear Santa,

  • fried_egg

well ive pre-ordered mine (and i get a free smartwatch2 with it). not bothered about the xenon flash (although normal flashes are a bit useless) or the 4k video (as my sony vegas software would need updating to cope with it, so full hd is good enough!). i have bought a 64gb sdxc card for it so happy dayz…

  • Takeshi

I agree, i dunno if its the condition the photos were taken in but in my opinion the 510 firmware looks the best. I guess theyre still tinkering it as the 518 doesnt look as good

  • Habibsaleh

the size of the images is compressed alot !

  • Lucian

These are all set to 8MP. Let’s wait for full resolution. And by the way, it’s bigger sensor, not just MP. You gain lossless zoom with more MP. They claim 3x lossless zoom.

  • Assa7in King

MAN !! THE PICS WITH .510 FIRMWARE are the BEST…..

  • Utsav Shah

Even being 8mp shots there is a lack of sharpness.

Am i the only one who’s not happy with these images?

  • jag

    Wowowee!!

  • Ghareeb Saeed

I simply can’t wait to get drunk with this lady! Simply Wowersz! Go Sony !

  • Marco Antonio Maza Hernández

I have a Question, there is pictures with low light, but there is any with no light, It would be great see how the pictures are

  • Jaywalker

The noise is still there (check the blue zones). Change the algorhytm. What good is 1000MP camera if the photos are noisy? With all the technology the supersensors the super lens…they just can’t beat the noise. I won’t pay 600 euros to have noisy photos. And to be clear, check the SE K610i (old phone 2MP camera) photos how clear they are, we don’t want DSLR photos but normal and decent photos. Check also Samsung photos without so much supertechnology and sensors or thousands of MP and all.

  • knightpt

PLease forgive my ignorance but i just downloaded one of those pics that you said has a lot of blue zones (the beach one) and it’s a JPG with 1,55Mb only. Isn’t it hard to judge the quality and noise of a picture that is heavily compressed like that or am I missing something ?

  • aligamz

Unbiased. On a Sony site. Yeah, sure.
The Xperia Z1 photo is the brightest and sharpest. My my, what a coincidence….

  • kkc

Shut up and take my miney

  • Lucian

These photos are compressed quite a lot.

  • Billy de Fretes

too much compression. i’ve just downloaded some of this picture and all of them have the same file size with my xperia Z in 9MPx resolution even though this pic taken with 8 Mpix.
from official specs, Z1 support 64 GB SDXC so why we have to sacrifice quality of these photos when Z1 able to store lots of images without worrying free space in micro sd?

  • Sadako Yamamura

It was done by an independent research corporation. So it really is unbiased. They’re just posting the result that was conducted by that independent body. :)

  • sfordesign

and that independent research corporation is able to make lumia 1020 photos looked the shittest. how surprising!

  • Sand

Under these light conditions even my old good xperia S can shot amazing photos like these.. but.. anyway.. congrats Sony! it will be a amazing device :)

  • Tausif

    Amazing

  • ghandi

    Not the only one.
Very disapointed for me, I’ve excepted more colour, more awesomness, they’re just like all other smartphone, just a little better though

  • raxxta

Aw dude..just admiring your great courage…tell us how your z1 handles when you get it!

  • raxxta

    Motorbikes are gay anyway…

  • Xvasek

Don´t you know if will be “Honami” mini?
    Thanks

  • roeshak

Finally the hype is over, time to put this camera to the test. I don’t know where Sony got the pictures they posted on their site from but I’ll be very surprised if, considering the specs, the Z1 camera can take on that on the 1020. The specs don’t lend credence to that idea.
No matter the spec sheet, I could never buy a bigger phone with the same display size as the one I’ve got presently. It’s a principle thing.
Sony need to refine this package and put it in something smaller to get my money.

  • Carl

Please read that blog slowly and carefully..
Or, if you missed it then,

    “Scenarios were:
    1. Baby asleep at ultra-low light
    2. Toy train speeding around a track
    3. People at a party (dusk, soft back-lighting)
    4. Building at twilight
    5. Close up of a lined face with bright backdrop

For all devices in all scenarios, flash was set to ‘off’ and all other device settings were configured as ‘out of the box’.

i don’t know where the result of number 2 and 4, but i stiil prefer L1020 in 3rd image..

    Sorry for my bad english….

  • ProWeirdo

  • blabla

Both have xperia z and GS4 and i never use the sony to take a picture and im pretty sure that even the galaxy s4 will take better pictures than the NEW XPERIA Z1

I was a biiiiig Sony fanboy, believe me i own a xperia Go, J, T, Z, S, P,U but since i bought a samsung i realised why people i buying so many samsungs, the screen is amazing the cam is amazing comepared to my xperia devices etc etc

  • orpickaname

    calm down boy.
I don’t see something here to be excited about.
there is a big lack of colours here.. even my xperia T product this shit.

  • XYZ

Need full res shots on final firmware.

  • nidou bossy

OMG, downloaded the first pic to my computer, and viewed the original size, could really cover my room wall as a poster!!!

    SONY FTW!

  • nidou bossy

    Samsung S4 totally blind!

  • nidou bossy

OMG GUYS…. FULL RES PIC of Z1 .. the quality is fucking stunning, check the link in my flicker, this blog doesn’t support more than 2mb of size! lol so pathetic!

    hahahahaha xDD

Come on, seriously? Where such ignorants grow..? :D

  • Shaun

This is a joke. The comparison is no where near correct. You can’t tell me the Lumia 1020, 925, and HTC One are anything close to that in real-world settings. Especially the Lumias.

Sony’s trying hard with this 20mp sensor that might end up being just another “above average” cell phone sensor. They should have added a xenon flash to make it worth it.

  • siber storm

Imaging power house my ass. All these images are soft and blurry, with poor dynamic range. Sony is making all these promises of blur free motion and spectacular night shots, but without OIS it’s just a load of bull. All the live photos from the indoor shots at IFA were terrible. This is no different than any other Exmor RS sensor, and the pixels are just as small if not smaller. The f/2.0 lens is nothing special either. Both the LG G2 and Note 3 are already far ahead with their built in OIS that allow for a slower shutter speed and more light. The HTC One with far bigger pixels and f/2.0 will also crush the Sony in low light shots. I can’t believe Sony is proud of this POS. There’s a reason why the camera is completely flush with the 8.5mm thickness. Because it sucks. All other phones have humps, because they are willing to add OIS to their cameras. Sony is so damn concerned about thinness and simplicity, but they contradict themselves by making the Z1 the widest 5″ phone around with thick bezels and thick bulging frame. The focus was apparently to make as much noise and marketing jargon to give the Z1 a false sense of greatness when it comes to its camera. But the results speak for themselves how much hot air all of it was.

  • Jaywalker

I was talking about these photos, compressed or not, shot with Z1. When they will put photos at 20MP then we will talk about them. All I was saying was about the look, and I don’t know if it’s about compression or sensor. Why a 2MP photo looks better than one of the above? I just gave some examples: old Sony Ericsson or Samsung Ace. Of course the photos look better than other Xperias, and on that small 5″ display will look even better, but don’t zoom in too much on a desktop computer. My expectations were a bit higher I guess after all the ads they had with G lens, super sensor super camera super everything. But hey, it’s just me.

  • jhdevos

Yep, as others have said: great phone, great camera, but too big for my tastes. I’m waiting for a high-end phone with such a camera that has a 4-4.3″ screen.

  • Madhu PV
  • Pond

There are what I have been waiting for, Sony!

  • Aaron Alexander Choy

    IS THIS 8MP OR 20.7MP?

  • Micro

I almost feel sorry for you

  • bandini75

Sorry, but the quality is rather low.
    :( I am really disappointed :( :(

  • bandini75

Why? please be honest and realistic. The quality is bad.

  • Micro

    Ok, fair enough.

Because he don’t prove anything he said. I can play a moron too now, saying, for example, that he would call me “daddy” if I didn’t let him go on some wall years ago. You get it now? Objectively it will be worth the same shit as what he just said. Let’s see:
“I can’t believe Sony is proud of this POS”
“All the live photos from the indoor shots at IFA were terrible”
“All these images are soft and blurry, with poor dynamic range”

Calling technological masterpiece a “piece of shit” is purely dumb. I can agree, this is not the best quality I’ve seen so far on photos. But, honestly, they are best so far I’ve seen that were shot by a phone with this size/res sensor, not some full sized sensors (and yes, I have several DSLR’s on my own, 2 of them are sony’s, and for years ppl pay me for the quality photos).

If he wanted to say something that matters, he should bring a proof, or at least ANYTHING to compare against the camera he calls “POS”.

So this is why I am feel sorry for such ignorants. Trolling around, saying shit to make ppl complain. It’s not about the photos, they are not perfect and you are right – on this one I can agree with you, mate. He is not right, because he just repeat bull*hit he heard on some samsung/lg forums, completely brainlessly.

one more thing – the motorbike photo. Yes, indeed it’s bad. I believe it was shot by hand, that’s why it is so blurry, this happens. But overall yes, it is one of the worst here.

No check out the one just single post below, which @nidoubossy:disqus posted. This is something i can call better than anything I’ve seen so far from a phone.

Yeah they surely looks this good when you enlarge the this much as well.. Give me a break. I have the Xperia V which has the same camera as the T, not even Close to this.

  • S.H.U.R.O.

Lumia`s 1020 photo quality, much better! As always, Sony cannot make good cameraphone)))

  • Mattias

Even if you enlarge the Pictures this much? i have my doubts since I have the Xperia V and it can’t come Close (even if the camera is of a later generation).

    Me think it looks great!
Naturally not as good as a dedicated camera but then again My camera isn’t always around.
    My phone is though.

I will most definitely buy this one!

  • Jordan White

I’m not often that my mouth opens like this :O I really am going to get this phone!

  • P9

    the best yet.

  • Jordan White

    My new phone!

  • Rogue

I wish all the photos would come at this size with the smallest being 5mb and the largest up to 15mb as there is a memory slot that can store the pics I honestly don’t see why Sony continues to over compress pics then all we get is a big colorful smudge.

  • nidou bossy

it’s the camera application that does compress the pics… yesterday i’ve done a shot with my xperia S using a pro app called Procapture with a 12mp 4000×2250 resolution @ 16:9 ratio and the size was 4.2mb, i zoomed out the original pic size was really pretty decent!

  • Rogue

But is that the point of buying a phone that’s supposed to be a camera centric phone? To install a third party app to do the processing that sony should have in place in the first instance I think they continually miss the mark with mobile cameras it’s not like we want the best camera we just one to compete with the competition so we won’t keep getting our arse kicked by sensors that are built by us. I think who ever makes there mobile cam software isn’t capable cause it’s obvious they are good at ps and dslr cams but the last good mobile cam they had was the cybershot.

  • Ghareeb Saeed

They’re saying the camera again “lottery” ?? Seriously ?

  • mode893

After examining the photos the second time around, I’ve discovered slight lens distortion at the corners of the pics which results in slightly blurry areas compared to the centre. No, this isn’t depth of field because they’re distant landscape shots. Hope my Arc S nightmare won’t re-occur when I own this baby :/

  • Anzilleo Kristello Mozihim

crap this crap that hashtag yolo hashtag### swaggity swag swaggots swaggorty swagfags fucked up generation yolo yolo

  • Anzilleo Kristello Mozihim

Actually better than my Xperia ZL.

    Good job Sony for improving.

  • M_F

LOL if that’s enough to open your mouth wide, I can’t imagine once you’ve seen pictures from the Lumia 1020.

  • Jordan White

It doesn’t.. the 808 is still the king of Camera phones. Even if the Lumina 1020 is better than the Xperia Z1 it just doesn’t impress me because Nokia had a better camera phone.

  • sony1

    xperia p camera sample 6.2.a.1.100 :)

  • M_F

That doesn’t help explain why that mouth opened that wide for the Z1 with its lousy camera.

  • j0sh

I took some samples with the new fw 14.1.G.2.213 @8mp manual mode

    this is @iso 1000 pretty impressive…

this is very sharp for a camera phone…

  • kslawko

Me neither. They are fuzzy, noisy and ugly to me. I have my own Z1 and I’m not satisfied with the quality of the pictures it takes. :(

  • Anand

    Super phone with pathetic camera..
I mean just showing some images taken by some experts does not mean that your product is excellent, it should be usable by people who pay and purchase it. I just bought this phone over Note 3 for having a change since I already own Note 1. Now I repent on my decision, can’t believe what a fraud company Sony is.. They advertise this as the best camera phone in market, but their product behaves exactly opposite to their claims.
Noise is the only thing that could be seen in the images taken by their camera.. Just take a picture from its camera and slightly zoom it.. all you will see is. NOISE NOISE NOISE.
Pathetic phone if anyone go’s by their claim of best camera. Not worth 40k INR.
Everything else is fine with it though.
